Four Walls

Sereia liked to think she was very healthy; she ate well, enjoyed running, had a supportive circle of friends and family, and a zest for life.

She believed in Hauora, the Māori concept of wellbeing from New Zealand. Hauora is described as a house with four walls and each of the four walls stood for an aspect of wellbeing: physical (Taha Tinana), mental (Taha Hinengaro), social (Taha Whānau), and spiritual (Taha Wairua). Each wall had to be cared for equally; if one wall fell, the rest of the house would fall with it.

With the end of the year and stress of exams fast approaching, Sereia decided to play her part in World Health Day and promote a well-balanced life. Some students desperately needed it from what she'd seen in the last few months she's been hired.

In the courtyard, Sereia set up a few tables and chairs for students to participate. Each table had a stack of colouring pages (lovingly printed in bulk by her boyfriend and sent by owl, bless) and a cup of pencils and crayons. Each page had a lined drawing of a whare (pronounced fah-reh; a Māori house) and the names of the four walls in the corner for the students' reference. When she walked around to see their drawings, she hoped to see a colourful whare and a goal written or drawn for each aspect of Hauora.
