───────────────── BACKGROUND ───────────────── Reducio The Volkov's are an extremely powerful, highly respected family in the Russian magical society and generations upon generations of Nikolai's family have attended Durmstrang since the beginning of its founding. His family have always been synonymous with dark magic and believe that wizarding blood should remain pure and undirtied by muggles but he couldn't disagree more. His parents names are Megija and Vladimir Volkov and he has 2 older brothers Pietro, 22, and Andrei, 19. Being the black sheep of the family he was thrilled at the chance to go to Durmstang and be away from them given that both of his brothers left schooling at 15 to pursue ministry careers so he is safe there. Nikolai grew up with magic tutors that trained him for attending Durmstrang along with his parents and siblings and he was raised to follow his families tradition of entering a ministry for magic and becoming a politician type role. Nikolai like all the Volkov children was taught to be seen but never heard and so didn't grow up with the ability to make his own decisions and have his own opinions so is taking full advantage now that he does and is finally able to express his disagreement with his families views. They are held to a standard that they will marry correctly and continue the bloodline but Nikolai resents the idea of it and isn't sure that the bloodline even deserves to be continued. This is also a matter of conflict for the boy as he is discovering, especially now that he has the freedom he has sought for years, that he is attracted to men. Nikolai grew up fairly estranged to his brothers, they were both significantly older than him one by 7 years and the other by 10 and so they were never particularly close. He always felt rather badly for them, growing up he saw the immense level of pressure that was put upon them and so he never blamed them for treating him the way they did. He saw that they were simply trying to prepare him for the unfortunate reality of being a Volkov, it was a life sentence of duty and control. Unfortunately, their attempts only made him resent his families ideals more and he is sure that even though it will most definitely lead him to be disowned he won't turn out like the rest of them. He won't let his life be written for him. ───────────────── FIRST INSTANCE OF MAGIC ───────────────── Reducio Like many in his family, Nikolai showed an aptitude for magic very early, in fact he was one of the youngest in his family to ever do so. It happened just before his first birthday, lying in his crib he was being fed by one of his brothers, a chore they were very used to. Beginning to choke his brother panicked not sure what to do but just as he was about to scream for his parents baby Nikolai raised his hand to his throat and levitated the lodged food back out of his mouth leaving it floating above him for multiple minutes before it finally dropped down. This was revered by his parents as they prided themself on being a family of resilience and aversion to death. | ⠀⠀⠀ | "It's your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself that determines how your life's story will develop." ⠀"A picture is worth a thousand words, but a memory is priceless" |

Growing up with the vigorous training the Volkov forced upon their own was at times a struggle but it was undeniably effective. Fear was something that was driven out of the Volkov children as soon as they were old enough to experience it. Fear was seen as weakness and an obstacle that must be overcome in order to succeed in life, if you could be controlled by fear then you might as well give up on any hope of becoming worthy.
His training began when he was just 4 years old, asleep at night he began to cry as a spider descended upon to him in the dark of the night. Rushing in his parents found themselves disappointed at the sight of his fear and it was clear it was not going to be accepted. Thus began the relentless exposure therapy to teach him that it was not a Volkov trait. He was made to own a tarantula as a pet to remove the instinct and teach him that despite something seeming scary he was far more powerful than it. Power was capable of anyone that was strong enough to demand it and fear could only control you if you let it. Although he resented his parents at the time for the torment it was a lesson he would come to understand well.
He began to watch how people around him would be controlled by fear, and realised that when it came to a life or death situation fear was not something that could do anything but harm you. People froze at the idea of it and freezing would get you killed. He realised that it was a necessary step in order to gain control over his emotions and saw overcoming it as strength.
This began his push to control his fear, he would face it head first and see how well he could handle the emotion. It took time but he eventually was able to find a way to suppress the emotion learning mental relaxation techniques to focus his mind. He learned to look at situations that instilled fear with logic rather than emotion, emotion couldn't save you from an attack you had to think quickly to save yourself and work out how to get away if you couldn't remove the cause of the fear. When he eventually displayed his new found skill of conquering fear to his parents it was one of the few times he sensed they were really truly proud of him. Their pride was important to him but more than anything he was just proud to have been able to tackle his own fear. He was an emotional kid so being able to switch it off and steel his nerves was a tactic he knew would serve him well in the future.
