This thread is used to apply for a Special Ability for your character. If you want to apply for a Special Race or Talent (Seer, Metamorphmagus, Parselmouth, Werewolf, Dhampir, Part-Goblin, Part-Veela, Part-Giant), please do so in the index registration thread.

Detailed descriptions of special abilities can be found on the second page of the list of magical races/talents and special abilities. There are over 50 abilities that you can apply for. Please make sure that you fulfill the prerequisites of the abilities before you apply for them. Special abilities are gained every year for humans, and every other year for magical races/talents (who gain race/talent specific abilities in the years that they don't choose).
This means, if you are a first year and have already applied for a special race, you cannot apply for an ability before your second year.

The application process is simple. Reply to this thread with the following simple application. If any edits are needed, feedback from a moderator will be edited into your post (please check your application regularly for this feedback), and you'll be expected to edit your application accordingly until it fits our site lore and guidelines. Don't delete the notes moderators left on your post, even if you made the changes. If your application is approved, a moderator will edit your character page's trunk post to include a link to your ability application.

Older applications can be found (here).

Elias was three. He was in his mother's office, playing with a set of blocks. He stacked them up and up before he sent them crashing right back down in one swoop of his pudgy hand. Almost immediately, he looked up at his mother, sensing a change in the atmosphere. She had swiveled towards him in her office chair, signing, No knocking down your toys. Go into the playroom to do that. Elias' eyes flicked over her hands as she signed slowly, taking in every movement of her fingers. He signed back Yes, Mom and picked up his blocks before toddling into the playroom.

Elias was six. He sat outside, gazing around the neighborhood playground on a white winter morning. His eyes, the only part of his face that showed, stared up at the cloudless and bright blue sky. He felt a warmth at his back and turned, signing Hello? It was Cara, his neighbor and friend, with her gloved hand outstretched as if to tap him on the shoulder.
Hi! she signed. I wanted to surprise you, but it's almost like you sensed me there! Cara's lips moved as her fingers did, sort of stiff in the gloves.
Elias smiled and shrugged. Maybe I did. Cara's mouth opened in what Elias had learned to recognize was a laugh. Would you like to build a snowman while there's good snow? Cara signed back and enthusiastic yes and the two kids began rolling up huge snowballs to make a snow friend.

Elias was nine. He walked alone in the school hallway, waving at anyone that waved to him and offering up a broad smile for all the world to see. He saw kids with their mouths moving faster than he could sign, and saw feet stomping, and a phone out with Spotify pulled up. Not for the first time in his short life, the boy wondered what it would be like to hear.
At that moment, Elias began to feel uncomfortable. He glanced over his shoulder a few times. He wondered where Lane was, the young man no where in sight. Elias decided to walk all the way to the end of the hall before doubling back to his next class, but he still felt off. Elias glanced behind him one last time to see none other than Lane Hutchins jump out from an open doorway with his hands outstretched, seemingly to grab Elias on the shoulders. Elias' eyes widened. Lane quickly straightened up with a disappointed look on his face. No fun to scare, Eli, he signed with a tiny smile, using Elias' name sign reserved for friends and family.
Elias grinned and signed back, You're just no good at scaring. Lane waved him off before leading the younger boy into his next class.

To make up for the lack of one of his most crucial senses, Elias' spacial awareness, visual perception, and multiple facets of his sense of touch seem to have developed more than the average person in order to compensate. After Elias' FIOM, he gained perfect hearing, causing him to be even more aware of everything now.

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: The muggle condition
Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):
Leaving behind all he knew and loved was hard, It felt as if anything he loved back in 'muggle' London. Was impossible for him to do at his new school. There were no electronics, as he was told they would explode. (How true this was he did not know) There was no way he was going to take that chance. He left his switch, 3ds, the tv, video games, movies... All of it. Suck at home getting all covered in dust. It took him a while to realize, as he was caught up in the excitement and nerves. When he did, he really started to feel homesick, he would be missing new movies, and new games, as well as new comics. All those things he would be in the dark about because of all the wizard stuff.

He did still love being a wizard, casting spells like something right out of a book. He was in his mind 'superpowered' and there was this whole school dedicated to it. He just could not let go of what he grew up with, no powers, no magic, were a wand was only a sick he found in the yard. Alex could not let it go. He still was confused as to what a muggle was, and if it were a bad or good thing. He was pretty sure it was just those that were not wizards, but he could not be 100% sure. In that case, he may have missed being a Muggle.

Alex thought that being a wizard would be all of his dreams come true, and it was for the most part. He still thought it was amazing, things were all so far from what he known, and he was having a hard time adjusting. There were people that had know this there whole lives, and Alex was here. Learning it all at once. It was kinda like when Petter Parker got his powers for the first time, Did he know what to do? not really. That was how Alex felt, stepping into a new world.

So yes, he did a lot of things the 'muggle' way. He walked across the room to get a book, not magic it over to him, he would not charm his quill to write for him, nor would he magic his trunk to lock. He would use one that his parents got him, and carry the key were ever he went. He could not let his Muggle side go away. He always looked forward to the holidays, and breaks. So that he could go home, and feel like a normal kid again. How he was before he turned eleven. And he was fine with that. Keeping his wizard stuff away from home, and taking his home stuff to the wizard things.

Name: Charlie Jacobsen
Link to your encyclopedia thread: <3
Name of Ability that you are applying for: Keeper’s Catch
Why it Fits: 523/400
Reducio

Charlie had joined the quidditch team. She hadn’t necessarily wanted to be the first string keeper, and still didn’t want to, but she didn’t want to give up her spot. She would be much happier being the second string keeper, but that wasn’t going to happen. She knew she needed to get better. Be better at catching the stupid quaffle. During the summer she knew that she needed to put in the work. For her team. For Ravenclaw.

She had been planning to set up a makeshift quidditch set up in her basement, but that wouldn’t work out. When she found out she was going to be spending a large chunk of her summer with the father she barely knew, she was ready. She made sure bring her nimbus 1500, and a good quaffle. When her dad asked her what she wanted to do with her, she said “Quidditch. Hockey.”

And somehow, he listened. Everyday, the two could be found deep in the woods of the Jacobsen Manor, in a small clearing with three gleaming but rusted quidditch hoops. Charlie would climb up on her broom in front of the hoops and wait to try and save. She made some saves but she especially missed some. Her father threw the quaffle over and over and over. And over and over. Charlie spent hours. Just catching and throwing it back, and diving down to grab a bad throw and passing it to her father. She knew that if she wanted to get better she absolutely had to put in the work. And work hard.

Charlie was also training one other thing. One other Quidditch thing, that was. She was working on her catching skills. Like many girls, she had an instinct of trying to dodge the object, or maybe hitting it to the ground. So Charlie pretty much had to undo a habit to become better. If that even made any sense. She threw a ball at the wall and caught it, changing the sizes each time, ranging from a small baseball to a ball slightly larger than the quaffle. She even started participating in goalie training for hockey, using a glove to catch the puck.

She had pretty much dedicated her entire summer to practicing quidditch. She didn’t know if she had made a good choice by doing this, but she instantly knew the answer when she began to see improvement. She could catch the quaffle. About ten percent of the time, she could perfectly block the hoop and get rid of the quaffle. She let her face erupt in to an oversized smile when she heard this news. She was better. Much better than before. She now knew that Keeper was the role for her.

Since she had improved over the summer, she knew that she couldn’t just stop training and practicing, so of course the practice continued into school. On the weekends Charlie would grab her broom and march out to the quidditch pitch and just rin drill after drill after drill. She knew that the work she put in would make her even more better. So Charlie kept on working.

Subject: Sophia Seprico || First Year || Slytherin

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: Comprehend Languages - Gobbledegook

Reducio

The Muscă, Sophia's adoptive family, have always been friends and allies of the Goblins, no matter what they stood by the Goblins. The Goblins are an Ancient Race of Craftsmen. The Muscăs saw the Goblins as equals and because of this, the Goblins that they interact with are loyal and kind towards the family who's stood by them through every Rebellion, generation after generation. Due to this, all the Muscăs must know the Ancient Tongue of the Goblins, Gobbledegook. So when Sophia was adopted as the sole heir of the Muscă family, they had to learn how to read, write, and speak Gobbledegook along with all their Pureblood education from their family, so they could attend the prestigious school of witchcraft and wizarding, Hogwarts. Sophia had to study the wizarding world's History, Traditions, etiquette, and politics. One of the most crucial aspects is alliances and how to maintain them. The first alliance Sophia had to make was the Goblins, yes it wasn't really important to have alliances nowadays but you never know and the alliance is part of family history and it would be like throwing away generations of work and culture and tradition. Thus Sophia had to learn Gobbledegook but Gobbledegook isn't just a language but an important tool in communication and an almost infinite source of power and wisdom. Sophia was fascinated by how the Goblins communicated, worked, and lived. Most of Sophia's time went into studying the Goblin language and culture under the guidance of the Goblin Elder, Kelturd, who took her under his wing as he had been close to one of her ancestors so Sophia was allowed to study this because Kelturd practically adopted them. Sophia was dedicated to learning Gobbledegook and had spent hours upon hours working with Kelturd ever since they were seven. Sophia learned the words and rules, phrases, and subtleties of Gobbledegook and it took three years of constant work to be able to be partially fluent in the language, ordinary people would consider it fluent but Kelturd wasn’t just anyone so he kept pushing and drilling Sophia. If Sophia did well they were also taught about Goblin culture, history, and customs, which, in Kelturd’s words, walked hand in hand with the tongue of the people. Sophia quickly realized that Gobbledegook was more than a language and that it was a way of seeing and interacting with the world, every word had either a hidden meaning or a possible impact, depending on how you said or used it. Sophia's capable of communicating and convincing others using Gobbledegook. How to express themselves through it and see something from a different perspective. Sophia’s last year before Hogwarts was a year of excruciatingly hard work and constant interaction with the language, and it paid off as by the time they received their Hogwarts letter, Kelturd had deemed them worthy of the title of being fluent in Gobbledegook and this gained them some respect and admiration from the Goblins who knew her, as she had spent a lot of time with Kelturd and got to meet various Goblins. Sophia's skill in Gobbledegook opened many doors for them and due to the time spent with Kelturd, Sophia really understood the anti-theft rule as if you know a Goblin it will be the rule you live by if you want to live. Sophia can effectively negotiate deals and contracts with the Goblins who offer them some special deals due to their skill to converse in Gobbledegook. If asked Sophia's favourite part of everything was to be able to learn the secrets and mysteries that were hidden in Goblin Culture and, of course, Gobbledegook. One of Sophia's best friends is a Goblin called Grimclaw, who was Kelturd’s apprentice, and whose parents had known Sophia's birth parents, the Serpico's, incredibly well as they were their account managers.

The Metamorphmagic, that is, the ability to change one's physical appearance at will, has never before appeared in the Moonfaith family. Never. At least as far as Astra knew, and she knew quite a bit, as she loved to delve into the family past. That's why, a couple of days ago, after leaving the Transfigurations class, where this magical ability and its hereditary nature had been explained to them, Astra had been worried. Her father had always assumed that the changes she sometimes experienced were due to this quality, and he had always been proud of it (and so was Astra). But if there was no family history, she couldn't be a metamorphomagus, could she? And it was clear that it did not come from his mother's side, since the Torrestela's were all Muggles.
Worried, she had gone to talk to Proffesor Aarden, the Transfiguration professor that same afternoon and had told him her doubts. She told him how since she was very small, her freckles disappeared when she was very nervous; how her eyes darkened if she was angry or turned an almost impossible sky blue when she was very happy; how her hair turned a fiery red when she was frightened... She also told him that they had always taken it for granted that she was a metamorph, but being the first of the family, no one had taught her to control it, so these changes came and went at the most inopportune moments without her being able to avoid them.
But that same morning, when she discovered that it was a hereditary trait, she had been confused... If there was no metamorphmagi in her family, then what was wrong with her? Was it just involuntary magic, like when she blew up the vases in the living room? Was that why she was unable to control it?
The professor took an interest in everything and reassured her. He assured her that her changes were due to her possessing that quality, and encouraged her to write to her father asking about her family. He was sure that there must be a relative with the gift. He also promised her that she would learn to control it but that she would have to work hard, and he made her see the great responsibility that this ability entailed, for it should never be used to harm someone, for example.
After their talk, Astra had gone, much calmer, to the owlery to send an owl to her father, as the professor had suggested. She supposed that the answer would take a couple more days, but she couldn't help but look up when the owls bringing the mail came in at breakfast. Great was her surprise when a beautiful brown owl landed in front of her with a small parchment rolled up in its leg. Astra nervously untied it and began to read the brief note from her father:
Astra, honey, don't worry about it anymore. Yes, there have been shifters in the family before you, although I think the last one was my great-grandfather Alfred's sister, with whom we never had much dealings. She was a rather lonely and eccentric witch who would scare visitors away by leaning out of the window with a pair of ram's horns on her head, so imagine... I'll tell you more details in the next letter. Now I am sending you these letters so that you can rest assured.
Best regards from your mother and Arwen.
I love you.
Dad.
Astra smiled as she finished reading, much more serene. And she thought she would go and tell her teacher... Maybe she could start practicing now... She was looking forward to it...

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: Calming presence

Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):

Reducio
Michelle possessed a remarkable gift—well not really a gift but just a part of her personlity - a calming presence that could soothe even the most troubled souls. It was as if an aura of tranquility surrounded her wherever she went, and people were inexplicably drawn to her side.

Ever since Michelle was little, she has hated conflict. Anytime her parents argue, or her friends got into a heated debate, she would feel the urge to stop it. Whenever the voices got too loud, she'd go and tell them to stop, and they would. Somehow, her aura made people feel at ease.

She had always been the silent one, always listening. Michelle would often find herself taking on the burdens of others, bearing the weight of their troubles as if they were her own. Friends confided to her during moments of crisis, finding comfort in her listening ear and reassuring words. She had a remarkable knack for making people feel heard and valued, even in their moments of vulnerability. Family gatherings became less tense, and arguments dwindled when she was around.

Friends sought out Michelle during times of joy and sorrow alike. She celebrated victories with genuine enthusiasm and offered a comforting presence during moments of struggle. There was an innate sense of trust that surrounded her, a trust that she had earned through countless hours of listening without judgment.

Her gift extended to the elderly, who often found themselves lonely and in need of companionship. Michelle spent countless hours visiting nursing homes and retirement communities, sitting with seniors and listening to their tales of bygone days. Her presence brought comfort and joy to those who had longed for someone to talk to.

You see, the thing with her was that she was too nice. She would always listen to her brother rant to her during his holidays, her old friends always telling her about stuff, people letting out the burdens of their lives on a little girl who listens when no one else does. She would absorb all their unhappiness and burdens, just like a sponge. She was just easy to talk to.

Her observing nature let her notice the nuances in body language, the subtle shifts in tone, and the unspoken emotions that lingered beneath the surface. Her ability to listen went beyond hearing words; it delved into understanding the essence of what others were trying to convey.

She sometimes hated herself for being like this.

For the record, Bex did not enjoy homework or studying. She wants to be very clear on that, for anyone who cares to listen. Bex likes to play football and eat lunch by the Great Lake. In contrast, schoolwork and studying are things she has to do. But she was sorted into Ravenclaw for a reason, and the reason is that Bex is genetically predisposed to folly, and as such she finds that if she must do something, you can bet your wand that she is going to do everything in her power to ensure that she is doing it the best.

At 11, that mostly means she spends far more time practicing charms and studying for History of Magic than she'd like. She'll do her work outside in the sun whenever she can, but at the end of the day she's willing to resign herself to the fate of beautiful weekend spent in the library (with a lot of minimal whining) if that's what it takes to get an O in Transfiguration. If she has to cast the same spell a hundred times to get it perfect, then she's going to cast it one hundred and one.

She was like this, too, in muggle primary school, striving to be the first to finish her maths exam and to have the winning project in the school science fair. But there's a sort of manic energy when it comes to magic that wasn't there before. Bex has a complicated relationship with magic, in general, but most days her fears of failure outweigh her fears of success. She isn't sure where's she's going, but she sure as hell can't stop, her brake-line's been cut. She's getting there one way or another.

Maybe it's her own parents' work ethic that made her this way. In her eleven years of life, she'd never seen her father take even one sick day, and her mother had often taken clients at the salon well into the night, if that was worked best for their schedule. Bex had very likely internalized the implicit message that health, convenience, and personal happiness were things to be sacrificed on the alter of success, whether that be in school, business, or (in the case of her parents' disastrous try at marriage) family.

Regardless of whatever the psychology at play here was, the end result was the same. Another Sunday afternoon spent in the courtyard turning a snail into a teapot, ensuring that she had all of the intricate details of the change from shell-to-pot down before class tomorrow. As the afternoon light slowly faded out into the cool grays of evening, Bex sighed and called out "Choclea Bibe!" one last time, to make sure she had it perfect.

Describe why this fits your character:
Reducio
A young metamorphmagus growing up in upper-class society, attending fancy parties and galas for as long as they could remember, chatting with socialites, and playing the role of a wealthy heir to a large fortune. Needless to say, Qrowley Beithir had learned very quickly how to charm people. From diffusing arguments between their many cousins to sweet-talking the pure-bloodist adults at their fathers' many parties with a sweet smile on their face, Qrow found it easy to hide behind their apparent charm.
That is to say, the child had always been charming; however, after the death of their mother, Niamh Beithir, something inherently changed. Something that had used to be a mask to hide behind was now suddenly very real, and Qrow found themselves living by the ideology of "keep your friends close but your enemies closer."
If a stranger told you that your yellow dress was hideous, you’d tell them to get lost; however, if a beloved friend told you that yellow was certainly not your colour, you would be more likely to listen and get rid of the dress.
This was the reason Qrow was so friendly.
A true ambitious Slytherin—that's what their grandmother would call them—lying and creating connections in order to climb their way to the top of wherever they wish to be. It allowed people to underestimate them; idiots would mistake the child's kindness for weakness, but Qrow saw it for what it was: a strength, something that allowed them to fly under the radar; after all, it’s much more difficult to strike a friendly face than an enemy.
Furthermore, the child was fairly pretty; they knew it too.
A metamorphmagus; somebody who could change their appearance at will, and despite that wonderful ability, Qrow was not somebody to try and fit in with whatever the beauty standards of society were—they hated the idea of being put in some stupid little box—still, there was something that was, overall, rather appealing about them.
They often wore their natural appearance: a soft, defined jawline, porcelain skin mottled with dozens and dozens of freckles, acidic green eyes, and ginger hair that often hung in messy ringlets down their back. A dazzling smile graced their face more often than not nowadays, and, to many, it looked real.
Even after the summer between their first and second years, when they had grown two inches and opted for a more alternative appearance in contrast to their usual academic look, they were still oddly charming.
For years, the child thought nothing of this apparent ability—in fact, they barely noticed it—but after the events of the summer, Qrow was ready to put their silver tongue to the test.

The past deeds of his parents during the Wizarding Wars. And that knowledge made me feel unsafe. That somewhere in my history I am tied to the atrocities committed back in the day. That someday he or other members may come back into my life to drag me down their destructive path.
Mostly it was a fear safed for bad days or bad nights, with nightmares where my father or (to me) faceless grandparents would come to get me. It was never a real fear, something that I expected to happen. That was until I got a letter. Two weeks before I left for Hogwarts, a letter arrived from my paternal grandparents. Never in my life had I met them, my mother certainly never told them about my excistence. Yet, somehow I received a letter personally adressed to me: Gydwyna Brynnhilde Delaney. They wanted to meet me, finally, and teach me 'the Delaney ways'. That was the first time I truly felt physically unsafe. My mother assured me that I would be safe at Hogwarts, that there was no way for my father or grandparents to reach me there. However, that reassurance was not enough for me. It also wasn't enough for my grandmother, Hilde.
"I never trusted that boy to begin with," she told me, while referring to my father. "I told Laila time and time again, something is not right about him. Some kind of darkness swirled around his presence." So, she took matters in her own hand and started a crash course Defense against the Dark Arts in those last two weeks at home. I was nowhere near ready, of course. However, the basics started coming to me and I noticed it gave me some sense of safety. Soon Hags, Doxies and what not would not longer scare me. My real foe, dark wizards or pure-blood elitists or just wizards with a distorded sense of humanity, were still a real threat and I needed, or rather craved, to learn how to protect myself. So, I would not stop there. As soon as I arrived at Hogwarts, I continued to read, and read. Practice, for as far as possible, and ask continious questions to my teachers. Slowly, but surely, I noticed improvement in my skills in DADA. I even ended up learning ahead of my fellow classmates. Some other students would laugh at my studious behaviour, but no matter: I felt safer, that was what mattered the most.
