The last thing Kalani had been expecting when she came to Scotland was warm days. However, the summer seemed to be dragging on. Very soon, the grounds would be packed full of students taking advantage of the hot weekend, lying out on picnic blankets with food from the Great Hall and playing games in the free space. She'd skipped sitting down for breakfast, instead grabbing something that had looked like Hawaiian french toast, but had actually turned out to be a boring roll. Her sneaking out of breakfast had lead to the grounds around her being mostly empty, which was exactly what she's planned. She wanted to get an area that would work as a pitch, grab a ball from somewhere and arrange a good game of soccer.

She was about to start looking around for a ball, when something dipped dangerously close to her, then pulled up and soared over her. It was so close that she ducked and covered her head, thinking it was some overly enthusiastic owl. When no letter landed in front of her, she looked up.

Above her, an older student hovered malevolently on her broomstick. Kalani could just barely see her laughing. A cool breeze ruffled her bright pink romper, and a purple scrunchie pulled her dark hair back into a ponytail. Her skin held a warm tan that suggested to Kalani that she wasn't totally British. There was a long baby pink ribbon tied to the end of her broom. She looked awfully mean, for a girl so pretty. Her face was full of evil delight. Looking at that pretty face, something tugged at Kalani's stomach that told her she knew the girl. Before she could place her, the girl soared away from the first year, who suddenly felt so small it was like she was barely there at all.

Even though she knew she shouldn't have, Kalani was totally mystified by the girl. She moved effortlessly through the sky. Kalani thought that flying for the girl was probably the same as soccer for her. All thoughts of sports had suddenly fallen out of her head. She wandered over to a nearby bench and dropped herself onto it.

The girl was easy to pick out in the sky, thanks to her general brightness. Kalani couldn't help but watch as she circled the air, so fast that Kalani couldn't believe she was real. As time passed, and more people finished breakfast, more figures joined the girl in the sky just the same as more people came out to the grounds. A small group formed and then separated. One group was all pink, and the other was all teal. Suddenly, two of the figures from the groups lunged at one another. The two sparred briefly in the air, before one of the figures - a pink one - tumbled from their broom. Kalani held her breath. They held on with one hand, and managed to remount their broom, but it looked like the figure that had stayed on was being congratulated. There was a couple seconds of peace, then another pair went at one another. Whenever someone fell entirely from their broom, it was clear that there was a group of students nearby to catch them before they got anywhere near the ground.

Kalani watched for as long as the tournament lasted. After a long battle, the pink team won over the teal one. Kalani couldn't help but notice that the girl that had won was the girl that had scared her in the first place. As she watched the girl lap around the air, she was suddenly filled with a great inspiration. She jumped to her feet.

It felt like seconds later that she was in the wide open area of the flying grounds. Around her, people were soaring through the air, some of them even doing loop-de-loops. Kalani smiled, felt a giggle escape her lips. She'd grabbed a broom from the storage room, and was ready to start flying.

How were you supposed to start, though?

She suddenly felt really stupid. Still, she had to try now, right? She swung one leg over the broom, and tried to go around getting herself into the air, to no avail.

Angela got up all energized and immediately decided to go straight to the Hogwarts grounds. Weather was so lovely, birds were singing, there was no time to waste!

She decided to go for a run alongside the lake, just to warm up. But soon her workout was interrupted by this peculiar tournament. She stood and looked up, just like all the other people around, hypnotized by the unexpected event.

It truly was a sight to behold. That was the first time Angela saw something like this. She obviously knew about quidditch, but it was something completely different. It was not a brutal team sport, it had a duel aspect to it, and looked almost like a passionate dance in pairs. In air. All of them seemed to move so effortlessly and with such grace.

After it has ended, Angela felt the urge to congratulate the winner girl from the pink team, but she was already encircled by a group of much older students who were clearly her friends from Hufflepuff. There was no point in interrupting them, Angela decided, she would only be out of place there.

Obviously, there was no other choice, she headed to the flying grounds. She just had to get on a broom, feel the wind on her cheeks. When she got to the practice area, she realized that a lot of other people had the same idea. Luckily, there was no risk of collision, as they all flied way higher than she planned to.

All... besides one girl. She looked like a first-year too. And actually, she wasn't flying at all. She just looked around, very confused, attempting to get her broom in the right position to start off. Angela observed her for a short while. It seemed the girl had no idea what to do, and there was noone older around to help her out.

Surely a small intervention can help get her on the right track. Hey! Heyyyyy! Angela yelled, but to no avail. The girl didn't even turn to her. Maybe she was too preocuppied. It would be best just to walk up to her.

Hi there, she said upon getting closer, I'm Angela. Are you all right?. Only after she finished the sentence, the girl suddenly noticed her and jumped up, taken aback. Hey, I didn't want to startle you..., Angela started, but suddenly she realized that the bracelets the girl was wearing, which she assumed to be just a weird fashion choice, actually said things, things like "I AM DEAF". Oh my, sorry... she started again and realized she's being ridiculous. She looked at the girl desperately. I'm sorry. I just wanted to help you out with the broom.

Kalani thought that she was maybe started to get a handle of it when a shadow crossed in front of her. For some reason, her mind thought it was the Pink Girl. She jumped off the broom, suddenly standing straight as a pole as her eyes travelled up to meet the gaze of a taller girl. However, the shadow belonged to a girl just about the same size as her. Kalani tilted her head back down again.

The girl standing in front of her was about her age and height. She had long, wavy blonde hair, and eyes that were bluer than Kalani's. She had a friendly face that Kalani naturally smiled back at. She squinted against the sun to see the girl's lips, and caught the girl's eyes flick down to her arm. Since it was a weekend, Kalani was wearing a t-shirt, which showed off all her bracelets. It was nice to not have to show them to someone, for once.

She smiled at the girl encouragingly, trying to tell her that it was alright to just speak. With the hand that was still holding the broom, she pointed a finger towards another bracelet that said 'LIP READER'. When she caught the words 'help you out with the broom' leaving the girl's lips, the biggest grin spread across Kalani's. She nodded almost violently. "Please!" She signed, touching her fingertips to her chin and then moving them away.

Angela was still a bit embarassed, but seeing girl's nice smile gathered herself. So she was a lip reader, and "KALANI ANDERSON" was probably her name. Angela wasn't sure how lip reading worked. Is she really able to pick up everything that people say just from lips movements? That's pretty crazy.

Kalani looked very enthustatic about Angela proposition. Okay... let's try to explain.

All right... Look... Grip your broom with your dominant hand, like this. This part should be closer to you. She looked at Kalani's attempt. No, a bit higher than this. Okay, that's better. Now position it above the ground, like this, not horizontally, but a bit upwards, she explained slowly, looking at Kalani, and presenting all steps herself. Is this gesticulation too much? Hopefully it's helpful? I noticed you positioned your broom wrong. It makes it very hard to start. You would likely fall to the ground anyway. But in this position you can only give a little decisive push with your legs and you'll be able to fly up and stabilize your position in air. Like this.

She pushed and flew six feet up, did a small lap around Kalani and carefully landed next to her.

Landing is easier. Most brooms will kinda guide you through it. Just don't be scared. Try it. You'll manage, she encouraged the brunette.

Kalani had never been so excited about something in her whole life. One-on-one lessons, from someone that seemed like they knew what they were doing. She'd never read someone's lips so carefully. She didn't want to miss a single word; and something told her she couldn't afford to either. Flying was...pretty dangerous.

She copied and followed the blonde girl's every movement. She was pretty disappointed in herself, since this girl seemed to find it so easy and she hadn't even gotten the start right. She watched the girl kick into the air. She soared through the sky like a Hawaiian Hawk, all effortless and weightless. Kalani would have called her perfect if she hadn't just seen the Pink Girl.

When the girl came back to the ground, Kalani gave a teeny tiny applause, beaming from ear to ear. She held her broom still between her legs, reluctant to let go of it and lose how she was holding it.

When she was prompted to try herself, it was a whole nother ball game.

She put her hands back where she remembered putting them before. She glanced at the girl - she must have said her name, she needed to ask for it again - to make sure she was doing it right, and once she knew she was she kicked into the air.

Her body was maybe a little too far back, as her kick pushed her broom to tilt forward. She squealed, expecting to collide with the ground, but pulling up sharply lead to her evening herself out. Her back went ram-rod straight as she attempted to keep where she was.

She was doing it. She was flying!

She was only a couple feet into the air, nothing massive, but she felt alive. She looked down at the girl on the ground, her teeth practically reflecting the sunbeams glowing from her face.

Time to try and land now. She tilted the nose of the broom down, just like the girl had done, and felt the broom start to take over a little. It guided her down to the ground, until her feet hit the hard packed dirt. She turned to the blonde girl, beaming, searching for a verdict on how she'd done.

Kalani's applause was so ridiculous and yet so nice that Angela smiled happily, blushing a bit. She wasn't planning to show off, it wasn't anything special at all. Still it was nice to be looked at like that. Quidditch players probably get this kind of treatment all the time...

When it came to Kalani's attempt on flying, Angela felt a wave of stress. What if she peaks into the sky, plummets down and breaks all her bones? Surely that'll be on me. Oh god I hope she doesn't mess something up. She wasn't all that sure that she gave Kalani all proper instructions. What if she missed something that's obvious to her, but hard for beginners? She taught her sisters before, but of course with children's brooms, all covered with protective charms, it was completely different. They couldn't possibly harm themselves even if they tried (and they surely did).

She gathered all her positivity to smile and nod encouragingly when Kalani looked at her with a hint of fear in her eyes. Seeing rapid jump of the broom, she almost screamed, but a blink of an eye later Kalani was all good and stable, flying straight and grinning at Angela like crazy. Her technique was good, her moves were good, and her face was just... so extremely elated. Flying truly was a special feeling, she was getting it. The only thing Angela could do was to smile back, wave joyfully and yell Yeah, you are doing great! You go girl!!!. Obviously Kalani couldn't hear that. But who cares! The enthusiasm she had even for this simple practice was certainly infectious.

Angela was absurdly proud when overjoyed brunette landed safely nearby, and hugged her excitedly. You did amazing! Flying is awesome, isn't it?! I'm so happy for you! And that you didn't fall and die too, said a quiet voice at the back of her head.

She just met this new deaf Gryffindor girl, and yet her eager student seemed so gleeful that this short time with her felt like a real pleasure. Angela put on a serious expression, but her eyes were still smiling. Kalani Anderson, you are a first level broom master now. Let me teach you the ways of the broom in the future. I am only a... hmm... fifth level master myself, but I'll tell you all I know. You will get to know ancient secrets of tight loops, ascending, descending, and, uh... some other stuff. What do you say?

Kalani let out something between a squeal and a giggle once she knew that she'd done alright, so blissfully unaware that she sounded a bit like a pig. She came off the broom just in time for the girl to attack her with a hug. She didn't even hesitate to return it, not even dropping the broom as she wrapped her arms around the girl's ribs and hugged her as tight as if they were lifelong friends, and not just five-minute-acquaintances.

She let go of her tutor and stepped back, shielding her eyes from the sun with her hand so that she could read her lips still. She beamed at the girl, glad that their enthusiasm matched. She nodded to show that she agreed. She attempted to stick the nose of her broom into the ground, but the ground was too tough so she held it in place. She gave a thumbs up to the girl, attempting to show all in one gesture that she was glad she was being taught, thankful for the compliment, and also so damn happy with herself for getting it.

As the girl kept on talking, Kalani took on a pose where she was half-clutching, half-leaning on her broom, while keeping her eyes trained so heavily on the girl's lips that she thought she'd never read anyone else's lips ever again. She could barely hold back her excitement, and by the time the girl was finished speaking Kalani had already leant off of her broom and was bouncing on the balls of her feet.

She reached across and took the girl by the hand. Her excitement practically pulsed through her fingers, as she squeezed the girl's hand a little tighter than she had meant to. She attempted to look serious and genuine as she nodded, but it was all a little much for her to handle as the sun streamed out her face and her blood fizzed like popping candy, her head bobbing up and down like a toy boat in a bathtub.

She let go of her tutors hand, and stepped back to stand by her broom. She looked at the girl, and once again remembered that she didn't know her name. With a sort of semi-gasp, she quickly lifted up her arm to show off her bracelets. Again, she pointed to the bracelet that read 'KALANI ANDERSON'. She pointed to the bracelet, then to herself, and then pointed to the girl, an eyebrow quirked and lips pursed as if she had just asked a very puzzling question. Kalani had learned how to speak with her face, and it was a lot more effective than you might think!

Once she had the name, she looked up at the sky where a group of students chased one another on their brooms. They were fast, but Kalani reckoned that one day - with Angela's help - she'd go faster. She nudged her newly found teachr and pointed up at the students, looking at Angela with a quirked brow. The question could have either been 'can you teach me to do that?' or 'can we do that?' but they naturally came together as activities, so either was a good guess.

Angela had never met a person like this. Kalani was so focused, so fully focused on her, on her words, on her face, on the practice. While Angela's thoughts usually wandered here and there, Kalani seemed to dwell precisely in the moment here and now, happy and carefree. She was making quiet weird sounds, her body, balancing over the broom, was in constant movement, even her hands seemed to do some tiny gestures, like she mumbled to herself in excitement.

When they shook sweaty hands in the light of the sun, it felt like Kalani meant something more, created a joyful agreement, quiet and sparkling with unspoken meaning. Blinded by the sun, mute, deaf, she was like pure energy in a shape of a girl, whose only purpose was to glow.

Or maybe Angela was just imagining all of that.

Surely enough, Kalani was used to communicating with people only by her exaggerated gestures and expressions. I'm Angela Silverberry, said Angela quickly and clearly, trying to make sure that mute girl feels understood, and observing her every movement. Was that all she wanted to "say"? How much she doesn't say when she knows people won't understand her anyway?

She looked up on people chasing each other. The idea maybe was a bit risky, but at this point Angela couldn't care less. Okay, listen, it's not hard at all, you just need to lean over the broom and it will speed up, just make sure you hold very tight, she hastily gave instructions, gesticulating "lean over", "speed up", "hold tight". Kalani was almost jumping up and down, definitely more than ready. Angela couldn't wait any longer too. Start again and catch me if you can!, she said lightly, mounting her broom and flying a couple feet up. She looked straight ahead and sped up, the sharp air instantly intoxicated her. Her mind was torn in half between thirst for more of this blissful freedom and feeling of responsibility for her peer. After a short while her body loosened up and the broom naturally slowed down. Only then Angela looked back to check how Kalani is doing.

Angela seemed to pick up on each of Kalani's cues, understand her in this awesome little way that she didn't feel like she had to repeat herself every second sentence. Maybe it was because they hadn't tried to have any deep conversations yet. They'd only skimmed the surface of one another: Kalani, deaf, and Angela, flier. Would Angela still want to stick around once conversations flowed just about as well as spoiled milk?

Shaking her head to rid herself of the toxic thought, Kalani turned her attention back to her tutor. She wasn't going to lie, this was them getting into the stuff that she was really interested in. Brooms could go so much faster than she could run, and she could run pretty fast. She wanted to feel the wind flow through her hair, wanted to feel the thrill of going far faster than she should.

She let Angela take the lead. It sounded simple enough; just lean forward. She swung her legs back around her broom, trying to replicate exactly what Angela had shown her before (and succeeding, somewhat) as she kicked up into the air. This time her ascent was a little slower, more controlled. She watched Angela speed off in front of her, and wondered for a second if she was one of those people that had been flying since they were tiny. Kalani had already met a couple of them, and had firmly decided that she wanted to stay away. They were too posh for her. If Angela was one of them, then she was a lot nicer than the usual ones.

Hovering in the air, she leant forward, just slightly. She was only testing the waters, and the broom seemed to know that as it moved forward very slightly. Once she started, she didn't want to stop, speeding up until she was moving fast as a bolt towards Angela. Angela suddenly stopped, looking back at where Kalani should have been a fair distance behind her, but her sudden speed change kept her only a foot away. Kalani squealed and acted on instinct, pulling the nose of her broom up to try and go over her newly found friend. She felt the broom takeover, controlling itself so that it cleared Angela and then suddenly stopped.

Kalani jerked forward as if struck in the gut, but recovered quickly correcting herself so that she sat bolt upright on the broom. She looked back at Angela, eyes wide in a mixture of mostly terror, but also excitement. She did her best to swing the broom around and slowly pushed herself towards Angela. She gave the usual 'question' signs - quirked eyebrows, pursed lips, tilted head - as she gave Angela a thumbs up, trying to ask if she was alright. Her eyes flicked over Angela's face and body, trying to check quickly if she'd managed to hit her in any way. She hadn't felt anything as she went over her, but she was going so fast that she might not have realised if she had.

With a little prick of conscience she turned back... and a second later an air blast struck her as Kalani bolted up mere feet away from her. Oh *****, she's going to kill herself this time, Angela thought, feeling a cold wave of terror flowing through her body. Supposedly it was common for beginners to fly high upwards and plummet down, and there was nothing Angela could do to ease the fall, she knew no spell to prevent the crash. She's going to be responsible for a dead student, for a dead KALANI. She's gonna be expelled. She'll be imprisoned. She won't be a witch. What about her parents and sisters? - all these thoughts managed to fit in her head in an instant.

But then Kalani suddenly stopped and hovered only a few yards above Angela. She even managed to stay on her broom and not fall, and now carefully headed downwards. She was safe! The relief almost made Angela fall down herself. As Kalani was descending, she decided to land and wait for her on the ground. Her head was spinning.

Kalani seemingly wasn't even worried, but rather... proud of herself? Well, surely it was a feat to do a maneuver like this for a beginner like her. Listen, she said as Kalani was approaching her (silly you, she cannot *listen*), that was too dangerous. I almost sh*t my pants. She realized her hands were trembling. She took a deep breath and tried to regain her composure. Say something comforting! It's not her fault! You did great. I mean it. You're amazing. It was great instinct on your part. She fixed her eyes on the ground in shame. I was just worried something could happen to you. I endangered you. It's my fault, I made a mistake. She looked back up at Kalani. I'm sorry. She prayed in her head for Kalani to accept the apology. Losing her friendship now would be heartbreaking. She was way too fun.

Having said that, Angela had no idea what to do now. I've had enough for today... Do you think... maybe we could... go somewhere else?, she asked with a growing feeling of discomfort and desperation. She didn't want to leave Kalani on such a sad note. But she certainly didn't want to stay here on the training grounds either.

Angela leaves the thread.
