Quick Reminder:

A quick reminder to players, this site has a 200 word count minimum on all in character posts. In character posts that are of your own work (so not quote from another source, such as quoting a song or quoting a portion of text written by another user). Out of character comments do not count towards this word count minimum.

It is part of a Prefect's role to review threads to make sure that they meet the word count minimum. If they note a thread that is under the word count minimum they will reach out to you with an owl and ask for you to edit your post. It is the expectation that the post be edited otherwise it will be deleted by the staff.

As for how to edit your post:
- Describe your character, their expressions, their clothes, what they are thinking about.
- Describe for your perception what is happening or has happened in the other posts in your words.
- Be descriptive.

This is not possible to do without changing the flow of a thread entirely!

That is completely untrue. For example I am going to change the following two sentences from a handful of words to 200 + words.

"Erin opened the gift that Howard gave her."
Erin received a rather large, cumbersome box. The box was wrapped simply in newspaper, it looked like last week's Daily Prophet. She recognized the ball that was pictured on the front page, it was a pureblood fete that she was unfortunately absent from because 'academics' were more important than social considerations according to her parents. Erin looked down at the gift, uncertain of Howard's intentions. She never trusted the boy, it was likely a poisonous snake waiting to strike once the lid was lifted. She shifted the box, she could hear something scrape across the bottom but her auditory assessment gleaned nothing of the contents of the mysterious box.

With a deep breath through her nares she pulled the loose bit of string that made a rough bow, the sort that one would have on the end of their shoelaces. The string pulled away easily, as unsettled as she was she was not going to admit the sentiment to boy, it would merely be another tool to bring her to her ruin. The string fell away and her nails dug under a lose edge of the wrapping paper. The haphazard wrapping job made such rather easy as she peeled away the newspaper. The wrapping ripped away, strands of lose newspaper fell about her feet.

Beneath the newspaper wrapping was a plain white cardboard box, it looked well-used and tired. She stared for the briefest of moments at the lid, as if she was trying to make certain that there was nothing moving inside. Satisfied, she lifted the lid...

There is a lot more that could have been written about, describing her nimble hands, manicured fingers, the thoughts going through her head could have been more detailed, could have talked about why they did not get along, etc.

"Shiori opened the book."
Shiori sat down in an oversized recliner in the back of the library. This was her favorite nook because it was at just the right angle. Shiori was a shy girl but she loved to be around people, more than anything she longed to be a part of the groups of girls huddled about the grounds giggling over probably some boy. She just was not that kind of girl sadly, painfully shy and uncertain, she was always that girl that stood several feet away from the circle always wishing that she was instead the girl at the heart of it. She would probably never be that girl, but she would always try. Perhaps there was some sort of charm that could make her popular, help her overcome her debilitating social anxiety.

This would have to do for now. She looked over at a group of girls, they looked like they were the same year as her, they were studying something probably and she wondered what. She chewed on her bottom lip, pinching the bit of flesh between her teeth. No, it was best she didn't. She probably did not know what they were studying anyways. She did not want to look like a know-it-all if she did. Totally safer to stay right here. She strained her ears to hear what they had to say, she did not get anything out of it. What a waste.

She opened her book, An Idiots Guide to Making Friends. Unlike the books about the wizarding world, jinxes, hexes, and neat stories, she was more interested in how to find a friend. The book did not appear to be well-used, perhaps there was not many readers outside of House Ravenclaw and those that did had no want or need for friends. The binding looked almost new as she gripped it in her hand and laid it on her lap. Heavy, bound in blue-dyed leather with gold edged pages. She cracked the book open,  she could feel the binding stretch. Yes, she was the first. It was a strange sense of elation knowing that she was the first to have this book, that the knowledge contained within would be hers first before all others!

The crisp write pages held no secrets sadly, but the words were beautifully phrased. There was an elegance to this writing, a confidence that she wished to emulate. She dog-eared a few pages that held her interest longer than others but quickly the pages she marked would multiply and exceed those that were left unmarked. In fact, she probably could have saved something on those pages to relegate to memory also.

In this example I could have went further still, I could have talked more about exactly what was in the book. I could have had her formulate a plan regarding how she would use this information. There might have been pictures in there.

Saying Goodbye to Professor Barclay

Professor Thurston Barclay, Professor of Astronomy has announced to the staff team the other day that they will be stepping down from their role as a Professor on this site. The user will remain a member of the community, as a player, and is leaving the team because their real-life has become too busy to stay on in a staff capacity. Please thank Thurston for all of their hard work.

Applications for the role of Professor of Astronomy will be posted shortly.

The Dhampir post was taken down for some minor edits, it should be back up soon. Some of the terminology needed fixing. Thanks for understanding.

Quidditch Captains Have Been Chosen!

Image

It took awhile to get all of the applications taken care of but we now have a Quidditch Captain Team. These students hold both an in-character as well as an out of character role in the Quidditch System. They will maintain an ic present on the Quidditch Team, will assist in the moderation of matches and assist in future development efforts. In addition to having a Team Captain, as it is a lengthy assessment and teaching process, we are also maintaining back-up Captains (basically deputy captains) which is a role that they would be recognized for both IC and OC. While they will not be moderating any threads, they will be trained in the system, act in character as a quidditch player and be prepared to take over the role of Captain if the Captain steps down or is removed from their role.

The following students have become Captains of their respective House's Quidditch Team:

Slytherin
Primary - Dan Palmer
Secondary - Elena Jones

Ravenclaw
Primary: Emma Hill.
Secondary: None. [will have applications open for the role]

Gryffindor
Primary - Kyle DeRook
Secondary - Marla Quinlan

Hufflepuff
Primary - Saskia Nicholson
Secondary - Quinn Healy

Applications to play Quidditch will be opening shortly.

As such, Ravenclaw is accepting applications for secondary (deputy) Captain. Please submit all applications to myself or to the Ravenclaw Head of House.

New Professor of Astronomy

Please give a warm welcome to the newest professor to join Hogwarts, Professor Alaric Equinox, he will be replacing the former Professor of Astronomy Thurston Barclay. A true man of the night, his impressive resume and and experience will hopefully prove to be a great asset to the Hogwarts community. Due to his late hours, it is unlikely that you will see much of Professor Equinox during the daytime. Please respect his privacy during daylight hours and allow him to get his rest.

Event Prelude: Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Yes, we are setting up for another event. For now we simply have a few activities for everyone to enjoy, such as making up some NPC characters from a far away place that players will be able to interface with via owl. There is more to this of course, but we are starting simple.

Have fun, happy RPing.

To clarify: you can only have 1 dNPC.

Please remember this. To quote from the thread linked above:
Make sure that you create a character that you are happy with, you only get 1 dNPC attached to your player account and in the future there will be other events with NPCs from other places with different restrictions from different locations. You will not be able to switch to a new one because you changed your mind, got bored with them or did not think them through. The only way that it is possible to get a new dNPC is by getting a new character through the DEACTIVATION process where your character is deactivated and you then decide to attached a new dNPC to your new account. An addendum would be made to the deactivation application asking about NPCs you own for the sake of papertrails.

We are planning to do other events, as stated. This will include various schools, for example. So if you're set on a certain school (i.e. Beauxbaton, Durmstrang etc), please wait. You will only get one so if you apply now, you cannot have one from another school - unless you fully deactivate your own player character and restart it.

So please make sure you're happy with your NPCs before you submit it.
