Judas Crane  Beauxbatons
Name: Judas Crane
School: Beauxbatons
Year: First
Status: Wizardborn
Appearance:
Reducio
At 5'3", Judas stands slightly above many of his peers, though not by much. He has a slender, almost delicate build, with long limbs and a narrow torso, as if you'd stuck the boy into a taffy machine. He prefers to allow his dirty blond hair to grow just long enough to begin to curl, and spends an inordinate amount of time styling his hair to look unintentional and effortless. While most of his features can easily be traced back to the strong genetics of his maternal lineage, the Cranes, his wide, dark gray eyes don't appear on the faces of any of his maternal relatives. His crooked grin is all his mother's though, cocky and toothsome.

Judas takes a lot of pride in his appearance, favoring button-up shirts and slacks, with a particular fondness for bright colors and florals. Clothing should always make a statement, so he takes particular care when choosing what to wear to each event, no matter its importance.
He's spent a lot of time practicing his posture in the mirror, both the straight-backed, poised confidence expected of his family events, and the more approachable, insouciant slouch he tends to adopt around friends and peers.

Personality:

Judas is both more and less than he appears. He works hard to maintain a carefully crafted persona of cocky confidence, carelessness, and effortless social aptitude. In actuality, it's something that he constantly practices and perfects. For those chosen few who manage to peek behind his synthetic layers, he's still a quite extroverted and charming boy, but far more thoughtful and deliberate in his actions than he'd have you believe. He's also a particularly vain and arrogant boy, a source of hubris that may bode well or ill for him as he ages, depending on your perspective.

He enjoys artistic pursuits, and is an avid painter and musician, with particular fondness for brass instruments. He also has a love for duelling, a love that he inherited from his once professional duellist mother, and wholeheartedly considers duelling to be an art form first and a sport second.

Judas will publicly follow the rules if he thinks that's where the wind is blowing, but he doesn't have much inherent respect for them in general. He was encouraged to make "good trouble" whenever necessary by his mother (as opposed to his great grandmother, who would be eternally grateful should he make no trouble at all) but Judas typically chooses to interpret these two differing directives as "just don't get caught."

History:
Reducio
Born and raised in his great grand aunt's home in Brussels, Belgium, Judas had the benefit of being raised immersed in three languages: French, from his Belgian born great grandmother and great grand aunt, English from his American expatriate mother, and to a lesser extent, Dutch from the surrounding Flemish community. From an early age, he was cognizant of language and the ways in which one has to shift their mindset in order to accurately convey their true meaning from one language to another. As such, he chooses his words carefully, with skillful calculation and a practiced poise.

His mother, an Ilvermorny graduate and former professional duellist, left the U.S. with her grandmother shortly before Judas' birth, opting instead to raise him in her grandmother's country of birth. If Judas has a father alive somewhere on this Earth, none of his maternal relatives have ever been open to speaking of him, and even at eleven Judas as enough tact not to push.

As both the Cranes and the Crécerelles, his great grandmother's and great grand aunt's family, are notable pureblood lines, Judas has been raised under the assumption that he is pureblood as well, though not necessarily born under a socially approved union, what with his father being entirely out of the picture. He is, however, wizardborn, with notable muggle lineage not on his unknown father's side, but rather from his mother herself that he is unaware of.

Spoilers: His grandmother, a squib, was estranged from her pureblood family and married a muggle man, with whom she had multiple children, including Judas' mother Patience. Judas has a wixen cousin through this branch of his family tree, Elias Travers, who he is unaware of. OOC: Permission has been granted by Astra Norrick, who will re-index upon request.

Judas has been heavily raised by his great grandmother and great grand aunt for the past few years, as after his mother left the U.S. and professional duelling behind, she went on to study healing and now works as a doula for the young, wealthy elite of magical Belgium. Though she loves her son, she often prioritizes the care of other people's children over her own, an irony that is lost on both her and Judas, who idolizes her.

His first instance of magic was at age 6, when his mother first started going away for work. Sad and angry that she wasn't there for his bed time routine, he resisted every attempt by the house elves to catch him for bath time, culminating in his shrieks shattering the bathroom mirror and cracking the tub, letting all the water out once they finally managed to catch him.

At his core, Judas is just flashy. Maybe it's born of a childish craving for attention, or just an extension of his natural extroverted tendencies, but Judas is at his most confident and secure when he commands the undivided attention of the room. He favors a two-pronged approach: in terms of personality, he is a contemplative and deliberate boy who puts a lot of effort into exuding an image of effortless confidence and impulsivity. He'd prefer to consider it a calculated decision in the safety of his own thoughts, but truthfully there's some element of just a desire to be liked and noticed as well, and the more quiet, bookish tendencies that come naturally to him just aren't as interesting to people as his more public persona tends to be.

Fake something long enough and you can trick yourself, too. The shoes may have been too large when you first bought them, but over time you may find yourself growing into them.

The rumors about his blood status have always been present, if, to his mind, unfounded. Regardless, his lack of a married pureblood parentage has put him at a disadvantage, one that needed to be rectified in order to survive day-to-day Belgian pureblood society. In the court of public opinion, however, it matters very little who you actually are. Rather, who people think you are, and the idea they've built up of you in there minds, carries a substantial amount of weight. People are willing to do rather a lot for people they like, and who have earned their trust. Judas chooses his words carefully to fit his intended audience, and will study them in order to be better able to say whatever it is they want to hear. He makes fast friends this way, as who doesn't love to hear that they're right? There's a subtle art to parroting someone's own opinions back at them without sounding like a sycophant. Judas intends to master this art form.

In terms of appearance, he takes a great measure of pride in how both he dresses and carries himself. 93% of communication is nonverbal, after all. We derive a lot of meaning from the subtle, physical cues of others, and Judas takes that to heart. A vain boy, he is very aware of the Crane looks that he will one day grow into, and isn't afraid to use his friendly face and big gray eyes to his advantage. He dresses to attract attention, whatever that means for the function at hand. In general, there is something in the way he holds himself, in the way he moves, graceful and elegant, and somehow looking both purposeful and effortless. It's something that he's cultivated and practiced, an edge to get ahead.
