New Ravenclaw Duelling Co-Captain Named

We welcome out newest duelling co-captain, @Jessamine Hemlock. This is a rather new user to our community so they might be an unknown to some of you but they joined us 7 Mar 2024, 02:04 and successfully completed the Duelling Captain exam after applying. This is a rather impressive feat for certain so I am looking forward to seeing what they will bring to this community.

Seeking Caretaker

With great sadness we must announce that @Finley Greer is stepping down from their role as Caretaker for Hogwarts. Finley, played by @June Selwyn has been a beloved member of the staff team since July of 2022. Finley has been a great asset to our validation team and they have been a powerful sport captain on their student account. We appreciate them for their efforts, their ethic and their personable nature. She will be missed and she is leaving some big shoes to fill.

Applications will be up shortly and can be found in this thread and will remain open until Saturday, April 13.

Solar Eclipse

Today there is a total eclipse that will be experienced in states across the US. This is a rare phenomenon so I hope those in range of the eclipse will witness this astronomical phenomenon.

Humanity's first record of an eclipse is believed to have been made on Nov. 30, 3340 B.C.E, at Loughcrew Megalithic Monument in County Meath, Ireland where a series of overlapping circular rock carvings called petroglyphs appear to depict the moon partially obstructing the sun. In Anyang, China, carvings in tortoiseshell fragments called "oracle bones" from around 1200 BC declared "the sun has been eaten."

Historically eclipses have been interpreted as a disruption of the natural order or a "bad omen." In ancient China, celestial dragons attacking and devouring the sun. The ancient Inca saw solar eclipses to be a sign of wrath and displeasure from Inti, the all-powerful sun God. According to native Choctaw (a native American tribe) legend, a mischievous black squirrel gnawed on the sun, causing the eclipse. The Tammari people of West Africa believed that the eclipse represented human feuds on Earth -- human anger and fighting spread to the sun and moon, who then began to fight one another.

It's generally believed that the influential Indian mathematician and astronomer Aryabhatta is the first person who recorded observations regarding the true cause of eclipses.

Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, published in 1915, declared in part that space and time together behave like a fabric, and that the mass of a celestial body can warp that fabric and, in turn, alter the path of light itself along that curvature. However, it wasn't until three years later that Einstein's theory was validated by a solar eclipse.

Sir Arthur Eddington led an expedition to the island of Principe, off the West Africa coast, to observe the May 29, 1919 solar eclipse. With the moon obscuring the sun's glare, scientists were able to see that certain stars adjacent to the sun appeared to be in the wrong position, a result of their light being warped by the sun's gravity before it reached Earth – just as Einstein had predicted.

During today's April 8 total solar eclipse NASA plans to study how the sudden decrease in sunlight affects our upper atmosphere. The Atmospheric Perturbations around Eclipse Path (APEP) mission will launch three suborbital "sounding" rockets in succession – one approximately 35 minutes before the peak of the eclipse, one during the eclipse peak, and one 35 minutes after the peak

"Each rocket will deploy four small scientific instruments that will measure changes in electric and magnetic fields, density, and temperature," according to NASA.

Additionally, in Missouri, a team of students from Virginia Tech will launch "high altitude scientific weather balloons" along the total solar eclipse path as part of the National Eclipse Ballooning Project for NASA.

The balloons will fly at an altitude of approximately 75,000 feet and will capture imagery of the eclipse at totality "from a completely different perspective from those viewing on the ground."

Roleplaying with canon characters

It has been requested that I post an announcement reminding everyone that we do not roleplay with canon characters here. In addition to it being a rule it is also impossible since they are not here. It's 25 years since the end of the Deathly Hallows and there are no students or staff at the school from that time, the ghosts and the giant squid are still here but you also may not roleplay with them (says the person who had to edit a post after he godmodded the giant squid).

Now you know... and knowing is half the battle.

Reminder: We Check for AI Use

A quick reminder, we do not allow plagiarism. We expect players to write their own posts. This means that we do not accept AI posts. We use copyleaks for reference to verify if a post or an assignment is done by AI. Grammar-checkers and translators will not show as AI because you are still writing the base post. We understand that these checkers are not 100% accurate and they are more likely to interpret something as being human-made in error rather than AI-made. But this program is close, so if you get a fluke it should be remote and limited. If we see several of your posts as AI, we know you are lying to us.

If you submit an HW assignment as AI, you may get a T without second warning. It is an expectation that you know better than to cheat even if you know no other rule.

If you make a post that is AI, you will either be asked to edit the post or (more likely) it will be deleted without warning.

If we have repeated issues with you using AI rather than actual human effort, it is likely we will withdraw your access to this community.
