It took all Landon's effort not to fall asleep during the lecture. As fun as actual potion-making was, the boring lessons about it were absolute torture to sit through.

But, when all that effort and energy was gone, Landon just put his head down on his desk, telling himself he would only rest his eyes for a few seconds.

Next thing he knew the whole class was yelling his name, lots of kids laughing at him as well. He raised his head up slowly, and realization that he had actually fallen asleep ambushed him. He wasn't too surprised though. Smiling at his class, he asked cockily, "So, are we actually going to do something with our lives now?"

After an irritated lecture from the professor, the first years were put into pairs for an assignment of making a common poison antidote. Landon was excited to start, waiting for his name to be called anxiously.

He crossed his fingers, hoping to be assigned to work with one of his friends.

It was an anticlimactic finger-crossing, though. a few moments later the name "Landon Riley" came out of Professor Valtome's mouth, followed by "Elena Jones".

Landon tried to keep an open mind about this, but he really wasn't in the mood to be with a random person at the moment. The one good thing about this situation was another person to prank.

He walked over to the seat next to the girl quietly, his vials, scales, and other supplies all inside his cleaned cauldron that he was carrying. As he approached her from behind silently, he whispered, "surprise!" into her ear in a forceful tone and touched her shoulder quickly.

Elena was happily listening to the lecture, she had, of course, read all the material prior to actually entering the lesson, but the sense of normality was nice. Not that she’d ever felt it before.

She was reading the book about the assignment, the poison antidote was an important but simple recipe. Elena had done harder cooking, she remembered the time her and Maria had proudly shown off their Duck A L’Orange. It was a personal achievement and closing her eyes she remembered the happy faces of her friends.

That was probably why she had freaked out so much when the kid had yelled in her ear. She had almost pulled her knives and screeched. She caught herself. She wasn’t in London, she was in Hogwarts, she wouldn’t have to fight anyone. She slowly moved her hip knife back to its hiding place. She had jumped quite a bit so she shuffled a bit on the stool to get comfy again and she turned to the other kid.

“Hi, I’m Puck. Sorry for jumping, I just tend to have to fight if someone yells anything in my direction.” Elena tapped her pen against the paper, “So how do you want to do this?”

Landon honestly felt a little bad for the scare he had given the girl. But he couldn't let her know that, could he now/

"A little jumpy, huh?" He teased.

"Pleasure, Puck. I'm Landon, as you probably heard the teacher say." Landon smirked as he introduced himself. Somehow he could make even the most simple sentence seem teasing and mischevious.

"Well, I mean, why not just follow the recipe for the most part and make the batches of aintidote and then be done with this? I think that's a pretty simple approach to it..." he suggested as he unpacked his materials from his cauldron, putting the ingredients for the potion that he had gathered previously on the table between the two students.

As they set to work, Landon following the instructions as much as his hyperactive and defiant personality would allow him to.

A few minutes into the brewing, he tried to start a conversation with the girl.

"So, what's your story then? I mean, you seemed like you were gonna pull a knife on me when I snuck up on you. There has to be some paranoia or something in your history," he said with a sly grin, adding under his breath, "or you're a loony... which might be true as well, never know..."

How had the kid known about the knife? He was insightful, she’d give him that. Loony? Really? Elena had heard that, the trick is to keep inner monologue as inner monologue. She would’ve called him out on it but she wanted to finish the assignment and get at least an E, if not an O for it.

“Paranoia for good reason. I’ve had to save myself and my friends from gangsters before. I grew up on the street. I know how to swindle and that got me in some trouble in the past.” Elena watched the cauldron bubble, “People used to sneak up on us while we were sleeping, I was one of the watchers.”

Elena checked the potion recipe again, she didn’t really view anything she said as baring her soul, it was a fact. It explained why she was jumpy and also why she had knives concealed throughout her person. If he actually knew about them, maybe he was just usimg a turn of phrase. She had never been as good at those sort of things.

“So what about you? Where did you come from, what made you so cocky?” Elena looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

The story from his partner was oddly serious and sobering for Landon. Hearing those sorts of stories always made him grateful for the life he had, as little as he showed that he cared.

"Oh, me? My parents are hit wizards for the ministry, we lived in a big manor in Scotland up until two years ago when we moved to Westminster. Regular life, my family is definitely a bit hectic though."

His family was indeed a bit hectic, but not in the way of family drama one might assume. His brother, who spontaneously dropped dead one warm day, had thrown the Rileys into chaos. Landon and his sister underwent pretty much every medical test in the books to make sure they had no shared genes with the late Wilson Riley and wouldn't also suddenly die, but nothing was found in either of the living Riley children or the once living one.

But that sort of story wasn't one that you could tell just anybody, was it? He didn't reveal that to anyone, it was too personal and too much of a weak spot.

"So, the streets, eh? I bet you'd be good friends with that Thompson girl, she practically grew up in a trashcan," he said, as if giving friendly advice.

Trashcan. This guy had just said that her best friend grew up in a trashcan. He had also implied that Elena had grown up in a trashcan. He didn't understand anything about the place she had grown up, there was fear and hunger but he didn't understand how old Granny Mari would let them sleep in her house whenever her kids weren't visiting, or just show up wherever they were and drop off some food. He didn't know that while the streets bred paranoia, they also bred loyalty and understanding. To say something like that to Elena's face, especially since he thought it was okay, made her very angry.

"Trashcan? Really? I am friends with Rorie, and if you ever insinuate anything about either of our upbringings ever again you will find yourself in a situation that you can't get out of." Elena spoke in a monotone, it was scarier that way.

"I suggest you keep your mouth shut for the rest of this assignment, or else you might find yourself without any way of speaking. If you need to tell me anything, don't. I'll finish this assignment, you just sit there and look pretty." Elena stomped over to the cauldron and set to work finishing up.

Landon was very smug with himself. His speculation of the two girls he knew getting along quite well had been proven to be true, so he was right.

But, he laid off, realizing that he had been a little cruel and rude.

Oh, well, he would apologize some other time.

The thing about Landon's behavior wasn't that he actually wanted to hurt people's feelings, he just didn't think about how his actions would affect them until it was too late. Ever since his brother had gone forever, he just lost control of thinking before he did something, often regretting it later.

He needed somebody to keep him in check.

Sitting there and acting like he was reading from the potionbook intently, he really just watched as his partner finished up the work. He knew how to do all the stuff, of course, so he didn't care that he wasn't there putting the antidote together firsthand. It meant that he could just relax a bit, that smug expression never wiped off of his face.

After the potion was finished and poured into the vials and everything, the two were free to leave.

Might as well start making amends right now, but I don't have enough energy to fully apologize at this very moment, he thought.

"Hey, Puck. Good job today," he said slyly as he started to jog back to his common room.

So i feel like this is a natural place to end the thread, but there can be another where he apologizes for his behavior sometime soon!
