History/Background Story:

Aric Sherwood had a pretty normal suburban, upper middle-class childhood. He grew up an only child, though he did have two half siblings. Both of Aric’s parents had been previously married and both had a single child prior to conceiving Aric. Both of his parents, Wade and Jill, were of pureblood descent, though their previous marriages were both to muggles. Due to this, his parents rarely, if ever, used magic around Aric, and if they did, it was so obscure that Aric was none the wiser. He had always wondered how his father cleaned the leaves off the yard so fast, how his mother always had warm food on the table, and how he never got as sick as his grade school classmates during the seasonal flu.

Aric's father, Wade, was a Regional Director of Operations for a cluster of newsprint mills. He oversaw the production and distribution of muggle newsprint that would be sold to publishing companies around the world. He didn't care much for the intricacies of magical newspapers like that of The Daily Prophet. He preferred the plain, stationary words of the muggle periodicals. Aric's mother, Jill, was a stay-at-home mom who enjoyed muggle arts and crafts. Her magical abilities aiding her in creating beautifully unique items, she was able to maintain a small coffer of personal spending money by selling her unique crafts to unsuspecting muggles.

The family moved to Carlisle when Aric was only two years old. There, he met his best friend, Brooke. Aric and Brooke did everything together. They enjoyed riding bikes, watching sports (Brooke was the epitome of a tomboy), and getting into trouble. The only thing that separated the two of them was Aric's desire to read on a daily basis. Aric loved to read, and he would read anything. Besides Brooke, Aric had very few friends. He would rather sit in the family garden and read than socialize with other children his age. He knew that broadening his knowledge was crucial for future success...

First Instance of Magic:

One day, Aric was out riding bicycles with his close friend, Brooke, along the nearby river. They were competing in their weekly race from the bridge on the outskirts of town to the small waterfall, about 100 meters downstream. Aric had started the race strong, but Brooke quickly closed the gap and overtook him with 50 meters left. As Brooke turned her head to mock Aric, her front tire hit a small divot in the path and she flipped end over end and slid down towards the water’s edge, just out of Aric’s sight. Aric immediately stopped and hopped off his bike, running towards the crying girl. Her arm was visibly broken, and she had blood spilling from her nose.

Aric, upon reaching the girl and seeing the injuries, did the first thing he could think of - hug her. As soon as they embraced, a sudden warmth overcame him. The warmth was stronger than anything he had experienced. This was not something as simple as a hug from his mother or father. This was different. It was engulfing him, radiating out towards Brooke. She was no longer crying, and her nose had actually stopped bleeding. Aric didn't have time to ponder the events; he held on tighter and whispered, “You’re going to be fine; we will make it back to my house." As the two of them walked gingerly back up the bank, Aric’s father appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. He quickly approached them, and upon seeing Brooke’s injuries flourished a thin piece of wood and took hold of Brooke. What happened next changed Aric’s life.

On Aric’s eleventh birthday, he was watching his mother cook while his father watched football on the television. He was thinking about that day, several months ago when his father somehow fixed Brooke’s arm and bloodied nose. He was in a trance when a sudden knock at the door startled him awake. His father quickly stood up, as if he already knew who or what was at the door. After a moment his father walked into the kitchen with a small letter in his hand. His mother stopped her cooking and walked over to join his father. They gave each other a slight smile and handed Aric his Hogwarts acceptance letter.
