Medical Magic  Lore
What is Medical Magic?
The ability to improve one’s physical condition or mental state of any living being by using various potions, ingredients, charms or spells is medical magic. Medical magic does not necessarily focus only on the physical and mental health of the patient, but also their appearance.
Occupations in Medical Magic
There are many different roles that contribute and/or use medical magic.

Healers
Stationed at hospitals such as London’s St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries are healers. They are the equivalent to muggle doctors and nurses who help the health of many patients, whether it be physical or mental. Healers specifically use healing magic when tending to their patients. To identify a Healer, they often wear bright, lime green robes with the St. Mungo’s hospital logo (wand and bone).

To qualify to become a Healer, one must have pass their Potions, Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms and Herbology N.E.W.T.s exams with a high mark such as “Outstanding” or “Exceeding Expectations.”
  • The Fat Friar:
  • This talented Healer was able to cure the sick with just a touch of his wand. His kind and joyful personality was what cost him his life as he was executed by churchmen who believed that he was just poking people with a stick when trying to cure them of the pox.
  • Gunhilda de Gorsemoor:
  • Both a Potioneer and Healer, Gunhilda de Gorsemoor, discovered the cure for Dragon Pox, a disease that killed many wizards. She, a one-eyed and hump-backed witch, would Heal those who were infected by the deadly disease.
  • Hannah Abbott:
  • Abbott trained as a Healer later in life after marrying Neville Longbottom and becoming landlady of the Leaky Cauldron. Unlike most Healers, Abbott does not work for the hospital, but rather applied to work as Matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
  • Miriam Strout:
  • Working in the Janus Thickey Ward, the ward that deals with treating permanent spell damage at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, Strout handles long-term patients who either have memory loss or mental health issues that result from spell damage.
  • Poppy Pomfrey:
  • Pomfrey was a Matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her expertise was that she was able to handle and cure different types of ailments with ease. Her role during the Battle of Hogwarts was to care for the wounded and attend those who died. In 2014, Pomfrey either retired or thought about retiring.
  • Urquhart Rackharrow:
  • A well-known Healer in St. Mungo’s Hospital, created not necessarily a spell or charm, but rather a curse called Entrail-Expelling Curse in the 1600s. However, this curse works well with medic magic in which it pulls out inner organs. This can seem daunting, however, it was made with the perspective of a Healer in which organs can be taken out of the body without too much surgical operations. Overall this curse can be used in a surgical fashion or for research in the medical field. For the creation of this curse, he was honored with a portrait on the walls of St. Mungo’s Hospital.

Mediwizards
While Healers are found primarily within hospital grounds, Mediwizards often take on the role of field doctors at various events. Events can include Quidditch games, tournaments and other Wizarding or magical-based events taking place in the Wizarding World. Mediwizards are the equivalent to muggle medics of EMTs. Mediwizards often use medical magic to help injured patients.

Potioneers
Potioneers take on a large contributing role in the medical field. While there are a collective many who brew new concoctions for fame, there are some who take the time to combine magical ingredients together solely with the intent to help human-kind mitigate the effects of various illnesses and more.

Spell Inventors
Another contributor to the medical field are those who create spells and charms. While there are a collective few who design spells and charms for fame, there are some who take the time to go through its dangerous (and unknown) process with the intent to help human-kind mitigate the effects of various illnesses and more.

History of Medical Magic
Both muggle and magical societies have struggled through many pandemic and epidemics throughout the ages. The wizarding world, often in secret from muggles, strives to find solutions to all illnesses in the world through an exploration of spells, charms, potions and various ingredients made possible by Healers, Potioneers and Spell Inventors. Periodically, the magical society will help muggles with their pandemics or epidemics if they are discreet enough to share them.

Examples of Historical Pandemics and Epidemics in the Wizarding Society
  • Dragon Pox:
  • This lethal disease began in the early 12th-century affected only the wizarding society of witches and wizards. Dragon Pox, similar to muggle’s chicken pox, warped the victim’s skin into a green-tinge with pockmarks. In some cases, victims would have green and purple rashes between their toes and sparks flying from their noses when sneezing. Originating from South America, this deadly pandemic came from Peruvian Vipertooth dragons. Many witches and wizards perished in this pandemic, Abraxas Malfoy, Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, and Eldritch Diggory, to name a few. Nearly 500 years later, Gunhilda of Gorsemoor, a Healer, worked exceptionally hard to find a cure for the Dragon Pox. Her potion, Dragon Pox Cure, was a success and earned her fame for saving the wizarding world. Although Dragon Pox has a cure, it still reappears throughout the centuries, attacking primarily elderly folks who are much more susceptible to the disease.
  • Rat Plague:
  • Beginning in 1992, the Rat Plague began in the dark alleyways of Knockturn Alley in London. Rats of dark or sickly green-tinted fur, are a species of rat, originating from Scotland, that roamed the area and began the viral spread of disease. Using spells to cast away the rats, it was learned that they were resistant to the Fire-Making Spell, the Freezing Spell and the Severing Charm. Only the Red Sparks charm was what weakened them.
Examples of Historical Pandemics and Epidemics in the Muggle Society
  • The Black Death:
  • Originating from fleas that lived on black infested rats from Asia, this mass breakout began in the early 14th-century throughout European countries. Its spread peaked by the time it was in the mid-14th century in which many muggles perished. It is recorded that approximately 30 to 60 percent of the European population of muggles died by The Black Death. Muggles struggle to find a cure for this beastly plague, however, it took nearly a couple centuries to regain their original population. The wizarding society kept to themselves during this pandemic.
  • COVID-19 (Coronavirus):
  • This infectious disease lifted off in December of 2019, beginning in Wuhan, China. COVID-19, a virus that originates from mammals or birds, came from local Chinese bats in China’s Hubei province. Due to advanced technology and transportation, COVID-19 is spreading throughout the whole world, affecting the entire muggle population. Muggles are working hard in stopping this viral attack by quarantining themselves into their homes, frequently washing their hands and social distancing from one another. Unlike The Black Plague, the wizarding society have taken it upon themselves to become involved in solving the issue of this pandemic as it has an effect on their communities. Potioneers, working diligently, have found a cure for the Coronavirus Pandemic in which they strengthened the strain of Pepperup Potion, the common cold cure. This newly brewed potion is called the Grand Pepperup Potion. It is said to relieve the common symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, dry cough, shortness of breath and fatigue. Only time will tell if their involvement in the muggle society will work.
Ministry of Magic: Medical Branch
As years progress, the Ministry of Magic expands their departments to be more inclusive of all professionals under one roof. One expansion was their Department of Medicine where many Healers come together, or a Board of Healers, to regulate medicinal use that are to be used in hospitals and what students are to learn through curriculum in their later years of schooling.

Board of Healers
The Board of Healers are made up donors and Healers. The board regulates student curriculum, what is appropriate medicinal use in hospitals, as well as oversees all magical hospital branches in its area. In order for potions and spells to be approved by the Board of Healers, it must go through a series of tests. While highly unpopular, there are many researchers who test new potions and spells on creatures. However, there are also willing witches and wizards who would go through tests for compensation.

There are multiple Board of Healers throughout the world, and they come together once a year to weigh in on matters relating to medical magic. As of 2020, Board of Healers from the UK, North and South America, Africa, and Asia have come together to discuss the medicinal use of the "Grand Pepperup Potion" due to COVID-19. While it is law that the muggle and magical societies are to remain separate, even in catastrophes, this was one that also affected the Wizarding World. In turn, the International Board of Healers gave the approval to secretly share their advanced common cold potion with the muggle society to lessen the plague.
Can Medical Magic be used in Muggle Society?
While it is highly recommended to keep the magical community unknown to the muggle communities, there are some forms of communication and outreach when illnesses can affect both worlds. Whenever there is an epidemic, pandemic or other types of outbreaks within the world, there may be some teamwork between societies. However, if it does not affect the wizarding society, then it is more than likely that the cure to such pandemics would be left for the muggles to figure out. There are times, however, that occuptions such as Mediwizards, Healers and Potioneers work together to come up with a cure using magical ingredients and, depending on the strain of illness, will not only ensure that the wizarding world has access to it, but a very limited access for the muggle world as well.
