THUMP

”Ow.” So. Dmitri hadn't caught him after all.

”Ow.” Dustin had tried to land on his feet and crumple and roll.

”Ow.” It didn't work.

It was only 20 feet. He thought he was going to be fine. He was definitely wrong. Letting out a groan Dustin took stock of himself. He was lying flat on his back on the grass of the courtyard. He hadn't hit any rocks or bushes. He first raised his arms in front of his face. His left wrist twinged a bit when he rotated his hands, but nothing serious. He put his arms down and pushed himself up into a sit up position.

His back was sore, but again moving fine. Dustin let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. He'd heard about back injuries. They were apparently the worst. Dustin moved first his right foot under him then his left-

”OW!” Dustin fell back. A sharp pain shot through his leg, originating in his shin. He felt like he'd been stabbed. He instinctively reached down and grabbed his thigh to hold his leg up. The movement caused another white hot poker to be thrust inside the hurt leg.

"Ah!" Dustin grit his teeth. "Welp. There it is." Dustin winced from the pain as yet another pang was sent from his leg as he gently laid it back down. His breath hissed through his teeth. "Right then. I'm staying here."

Dustin looked up at the clouds overhead, and tried to take stock of the situation. So, for all intents and purposes he was stuck right here for the foreseeable future. Thinking back to the jump, he had heard Dmitri cast a spell (with some interspersed cursing), but had to assume it hadn't worked. Dustin grimaced. Well, it was good to know the older student tried. In Dustin's book that's all that mat-

”OW!” Dustin twinged at the sudden, intense pain. "I didn't even move that time!" He yelled at his leg, giving it an intense glare. He let out a sigh, closing his eyes. It seemed like he was stuck here until his leg felt better or someone noticed him.

This thread is a continuation of Head First

Dmitri ran as fast as his legs can take him down the flight of stairs. He was just minding his own business, studying in one of the Study Rooms up on the second floor (it was the first day of class; any respectable student would do the same), when his leisurely afternoon study session was disrupted by an underclassman who decided it was fun to kill themselves by jumping out of the window

He wished he was joking.

The Slytherin boy might have actually witnessed an actual death.

Oh shitshitshit, his mind echoed frantically as he tripped and stumbled down towards the first-floor courtyard. No one in their right mind can blame him, though. Dmitri did try to save the boy! Unfortunately, the funny thing about gravity was that it didn't wait for no wizard--the Gryffindor dropped like a sack of rice onto the courtyard below before Dmitri could even finish an incantation. It didn't help that he was cussing for most of it, too.

Besides, he was only responsible for warning and trying to save the lad--what he was not responsible for, however, was the boy's apparent stupidity.

As Dmitri's hurried steps echoed on the cold stone steps, he dreaded the red, splattered mess waiting for him down at the courtyard. Turns out he needn't have worried.

Because right there in the middle of the courtyard, flat on his back, was the kid. Dustin, he said his name was. Striding determinedly to the prone, wincing boy, Dmitri crossed his arms and scoffed. "Do you want me to finish the deed? Finish you off?" He enunciated through clenched teeth. "Because it seems that's what you wanted, right? Anyone throwing themselves off a twenty-foot high window is just asking to die." The Slytherin threw his hands up in exasperation. "You're immensely lucky, lad!"

He didn't know why he was so angry. It might partly be because a bit of it was his fault. He wasn't quick and good enough with his spellwork--and herein lay most of the problem. A Slytherin who dedicated the entirety of his first two years at Hogwarts unable to save a falling kid with his spells--that's probably what irked him the most, rather than a genuine concern for the kid. It was a question on his competence--the only thing he could be proud of; Dmitri's well-crafted facade of excellence shattered by a blustering, bumbling baboon of a boy. He can't even cast a healing spell, yet (though, he knew they were going to learn it in one of their first classes this term from his DADA syllabus).

Dmitri had to carry the damn lad to the Hospital Wing himself.

He looked across the green expanse of the courtyard, hoping to find somebody that can help him (you can't expect him to carry an injured kid himself, can you?)--to no avail.

"I really should just leave you here. That'd be a valuable lesson for you to avoid throwing yourself off windows again." The Slytherin would huff.

The third year had expected a relaxed afternoon as he was sitting outside in the Courtyard on a bench, crouched over to the side to work on his homework that he had placed next to himself. The faint scratching noise of the quill on paper was drowned out by the sound of rustling leaves as the wind gently shook the trees and pulled at the branches. It was what seemed like a harmonious scene, but it was not meant to stay like this.

Alan heard a noise, like something heavy falling onto a soft patch up grass, barely able to lessen the impact of whatever had landed on the grounds of the Courtyard. In confusion Alan glanced up from his homework, but quickly jumped up once he heard the yelp of pain from a student. His homework scattering across the premises as he scanned the area for the student. Once he caught sight of the boy he quickly ran into his direction. Did he just fall out from one of the windows? Alan wondered, paling slightly at the thought as he directed his gaze upwards to see that he must have climbed out of one of the openings from which seemed like the second story of the building.

A student clad in a Slytherin uniform soon appeared in the scene as Alan made his way towards the pair, hearing the tirade of scolds for the boy that sat on the ground, who... jumped out of the second floor. At least that was what Alan was able to catch in the situation. "What happened? A-Are you a-alright?!", he asked in shock, worry being the main characteristic in how to describe his voice at the moment. The usually calm and light voice raised in panic and worry for a fellow student. "C-Can you move?", he wondered, hoping that nothing was broken and that the student would be alright; well, as alright as one could be after jumping out of a window, he assumed.

"Do you want me to finish the deed? Finish you off?"
Through the haze of throbbing pain Dustin recognized Dmitri's voice. Dustin started to sit up and turn but fell back again with a groan as his leg twinged. The Slytherin's voice grew closer. From Dmitri's tone it sounded like he assumed Dustin was trying to off himself, though even with that assumption Dustin was confused as to why Dmitri seemed so angry.
"Because it seems that's what you wanted, right? Anyone throwing themselves off a twenty-foot high window is just asking to die. You're immensely lucky, lad!"
Dustin let out a strained chortle. He definitely didn't feel lucky right now, the pain was pretty intense, all the moreso because the adrenaline from the jump was wearing off. He was now acutely aware of his leg. The first year tried a third time to sit up, never one to take a hint, but for a third time he failed to move up from where he lay on his back.

Dustin let out a hiss through clenched teeth, and gripped the grass under him tight in his fingers, his nails digging into the soft ground. He really was stuck until his leg felt well enough for him to hop one-footed or someone came along and helped.
"I really should just leave you here. That'd be a valuable lesson for you to avoid throwing yourself off windows again."
"Hey, Dmitri," Dustin cut in to the tirade, "Thank's for trying." The boy looked up at the older student. "Really. It means a lot that you tried." Dustin didn't care what his reasons were. If Dmitri's assumption was that Dustin was trying to hurt himself then Dmitri had tried to help him. Dustin was realizing the older Slytherin's strength of character. "Definitely someone I want to keep around. Dustin thought, closing his eyes for a moment when the pain again seared through his leg.

A call and footsteps heralded the arrival of another student. An older Gryffindor if Dustin was any judge of appearance.
"What happened? A-Are you a-alright?! C-Can you move?"
Dustin tried to put the older boy's mind at ease immediately. "Yeah yeah, no worries!" Dustin began, though the pain made his breath hitch at the 'no' making it entirely unbelievable. "I just em, thought I could make the jump!" Dustin again tried to brush it off like it was no big deal, but his tone gave him away. "I think it's just my leg, so I'm just going to lay here, on my nice, comfy spot of grass," Dustin patted the grass around him, though the movement made him wince. "And wait until my leg feels good enough to go to the hospital wing!

Dustin tried to sit up for the fourth time, and this time managed to get halfway to a seated position before falling back down yet again as his leg throbbed. "I might just be a minute!"

Dmitri visibly sighed in relief as another Gryffindor approached them--and not only because of the calming aura the newcomer exuded about them albeit their stuttering words. "Thank goodness you're here." Just a while ago, the Slytherin has resigned himself to either help the boy walk all the way to the Hospital Wing, levitate him the whole time, or call a person of higher authority to do any of the two--which were all bad decisions if you wanted to get it done as quickly as possible.

One, staying indoors and studying for most of his Hogwarts years has done absolutely nothing for his physique. He knows for a fact he couldn't handle assisting an actual child without breaking his own back in the process. Two, though he was pretty decent at magic, levitating someone through the halls of Hogwarts would definitely not go unnoticed. And three, asking the school authorities for help would involve a lot of explaining and Dmitri didn't really know how to explain any of this without incriminating himself, as well.

The Slytherin nodded in recognition at the newcomer. "I'm Dmitri and this one on the ground is Dustin--" Dmitri said after pointedly ignoring the said boy, "...though I'm sure you might have met him in your common room at least once. Long story short, he thought jumping out of the second-floor window was a good idea." He paused to take a look at the said window high up above their heads. "I did my best to warn him, even cast a spell to save him, but here we are." Gesturing towards the boy on the ground, Dmitri would roll his eyes a little.  Not to lie, he should have already expected that Gryffindors were... lacking in the logical-thinking area, but this was the first time he was proven wrong.

It was much worse.

"Can you help me get him to the Hospital Wing?" He would inquire after a moment's hesitation. It really was out-of-character for him to ever ask anything of anyone--especially a Gryffindor, but at this very moment, he couldn't find any other way.

Alan's eyes widened when the kid on the ground began to explain what happened. But before he could react to the explanation, his attention was captured by the kid next to him, who was also standing. He introduced the two of them and Alan stared at both of their faces for a few seconds inconspicuously to remember their faces and names correctly. He was bad at names, especially if he met many new people at once. "H-Hi, my name is Alan Vanes, it's a pleasure to meet you", he introduced himself smoothly but hastily, before he faced the kid on the ground again, Dustin, as he now knew.

"Y-You shouldn't be j-jumping out windows a-at all, even if you c-could make it. Th-The risk of g-getting hurt i-is bad a-and you could be s-setting a bad example f-for other students", he murmured. Other than the taller kid who was on a rant, Alan's voice was not accusingly or angry. He was worried for the other kid and hoped that he did not break anything. "S-See, now you a-are in pain, so w-was it really w-worth it?", he pointed out as he glanced over to the taller kid. "W-We could t-try, but it m-might just be better t-to l-look for a professor b-before we hurt him w-worse", he pointed out with minor concerns about just carrying him to the Hospital Wings all by themselves. "I c-could go look f-for one, if you w-would like that?", he offered, facing Dustin and his homework that had been scatter by the wind was long forgotten.

"I did my best to warn him, even cast a spell to save him, but here we are. Can you help me get him to the Hospital Wing?"
Dustin was about to teasingly cut Dmitri off, correcting his claim about successfully casting a spell, but a twinge of pain stole his breath for a moment. Instead the newcomer jumped in, introducing himself. The newcomer put him much more at ease than he should be, but the stuttering continued, though Dustin wasn't sure if it was Alan's excitement or normal for his fellow Gryffindor.
"I c-could go look f-for one, if you w-would like that?"
Dustin let out a groan. The pain was becoming less of a sharp stab and more of a dull throb. It was incredibly intense, but his whole body wasn't seizing up each time he blinked. "I think I just need to get to the hospital wing."

Dustin wasn't too concerned. He'd broken bones before, his father usually fixed them pretty quickly. It wasn't pleasant, but if all that was wrong was a broken bone then he considered himself in not too bad a shape. He'd been hurt much worse than this before, and he would absolutely be hurt worse again-

"Ah!" Dustin hissed through his teeth. His leg was getting really annoying really quickly. "Right, I'm done with this."

Dustin, in a feat of surprising deftness and strength, quickly sat up, his broken leg being held off the ground. He grit his teeth and let out a growl. Bending his right knee and pulling that foot close he used his momentum to get up onto one foot, and stood up from there. Dustin's leg was screaming at him, and he felt dizzy, but he stayed standing on one foot while the other one, bent at the knee, was prevented from coming into contact with the ground or anything else around.

Trying to get the pain off his mind and knowing he could rile the Slytherin up, Dustin looked at Dmitri, a pained grimace spreading across his face. "I'd ask for a hand, but seeing as how it worked out last time..."

Looking back at Alan he said, "Unless you know a spell to heal a broken leg? Otherwise I'll just have to hop." Dustin swayed on his foot. He knew he was lying. The first-year was strong, but he knew he wasn't really in any shape to really move.

Dmitri rolled his eyes as the older Gryffindor spoke. "There's no use trying to lecture the boy." He retorted, watching with a sour expression at the younger boy writhing on the ground. "I tried. None of my words pierced that brain of his. I guess this is all the better for him, huh." At this, the Slytherin would bend down and mockingly inspect Dustin all over. "He'll learn to listen to his elders in the future. And probably learn how not to kill himself."

If he were to be honest, Dmitri was just relieved the boy wasn't seriously hurt--not out of sympathy for him, no. Don't get him wrong. It just meant the Slytherin wouldn't suffer any major consequences from this ordeal compared to if the stupid Gryffindor died. His clean record on the school would remain so--clean.

The Slytherin was abruptly taken from his meandering thoughts as the boy on the ground, in one smooth motion, stood up and straightened, his injured leg curled limply at the knees. It was evident that the boy was quite in a lot of pain--and Dmitri knew this. In fact, he found himself about to put an arm around Dustin to assist.

And he would have.

If it weren't for the boy's smart-ass remark.

The Slytherin sputtered, nose flaring at the teasing tone. "I--You--! How dare you? You make it sound like I'm responsible for you, idiot!" Dmitri growled. The nerve! "Ungrateful little flobberworm."  This last one was muttered under his breath.

He'd glance at the worried face of the older Gryffindor. "See, I think it would be better to take him to the Hospital Wing. I wouldn't want to risk further injuring his leg--as I think he might actually be suffering a sprain, or worse, a fracture." Rubbing his nape, Dmitri would glance around at the relatively empty courtyard. "If you can handle carrying him alone I could just..." He would slowly back off, intending to leave. "...leave you to it."

His words seem to fall on deaf ears and soon the other kid, the Slytherin that had been with the boy, let him know so as well. Alan was not quite sure whether he would consider this rude, but it seemed like a reaction that was normal in a situation like this. Alan could not believe that his house mate would could have done something so stupid and foolish like jumping out of a second floor window for fun. There was no fun in getting hurt on purpose and it was not like he took any precautions to not get hurt. "I d-do hope that y-you won't repeat th-this, Dustin", he muttered in agreement with the taller Slytheirn, however his voice was soft and worried rather than said with the brash undertone the other was using to lecture the boy on the ground.

Alan glanced at the Slytherin when he began to fight the boy on the ground and sighed. There was not time for that now, was there? "I d-don't think I w-would be able to c-carry him alone...", he muttered before adding a mental 'no offense'. "I d-don't really k-know a healing sp-spell that w-would mend it... but I c-can conjure a sp-splint to support a-and take some o-of the pain", he explained softly as he knelt down next to the blond kid and tugged out his cherry wood wand from his robe's pocket.

"O-Okay, hold still...", he muttered a bit nervous. It was the first time he was actually using this spell on an injured student and hoped it would go good. He narrowed his eyes in concentration, remembering the countless times he had practice the pronunciation of the spell in secret. "Ferula", he muttered the incantation and would tap the tip of the band lightly against the other student's leg [rolled 21; success]. With a satisfied smile he watched as bandages materialized around the other student's leg and and ankle, giving it some support and limiting some of the crucial pain the other kid must have been feeling.

Pocketing his wand again, he glanced at Dmitri and tilted his head slightly. "S-So how a-are we gonna d-do this?", he wondered, motioning at the now bandaged boy still unsure of how they could even get him to the hospital wing like this.
