Christmas Bells are Ringing PV: Rafael D'Spacito

Katrina paced the hallway in the time between 6th and 7th period. It was the last class of the day before school let out and she still had three letters to deliver. She had hand-made nearly a dozen letters to people who meant something to her (most just people that made her smile in a tough time). She winced as she heard the bells chime and began to rush to class. She had yet to see Rafael D'Spacito yet and held his note at the top of her pile.

The note read:

Dear Bird,

I know we only met once. And don't overthink this letter. I just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

-Kat

She waited for the professor to walk in. All Gryffindors should be present for potions and it was horrible having it at the end of the day. The room was cold and desolate and Katrina did not have the aptitude for mixing things. She received good enough grades for the class though.

She searched the room and looked for him. She looked for a group of happy people or a loud mob of boys talking.

At the last minute, she saw Rafe sit down two seats over. She gave a small wave at him to try to get his attention.

[font=Segoe Print]Rafael had always dreaded Potions Class. Sure, it was no Transfigurations, but it still had its own reasons for being incredibly boring and tedious. For one, the art involved an aptitude for science. While many people found solace in the puzzles and equations that math held, Rafa couldn’t have been more far from peace. If there was one thing he hated more than anything else, it was puzzles – using his head had never been a strong suit of his. The act had always tired him out, leaving him weary and unenergized. Many of his peers liked to make fun of him for this, calling him a brute, but the truth was, he was no Goyle. His mind simply ran differently. Instead of finding the answers to math problems and measurements, he found himself looking for much different answers.

Which brought him to his next issue – he was weary. It was ever-evident in his demeanor, gentle bags under his eyes and a slight sag to his posture. His eyes slid in-and-out of focus, as if he were about to fall asleep. He was sure to do just that, the first opportunity that he was offered. It mainly had to do with his burning curiosity, and his search for answers – for the last few weeks, more and more information on the Potter case had been uncovered. Which was great – the man was getting closer and closer to Liberation. However, his sleep had been suffering. The thoughts of his hero being framed had been reverberating around his head for the past few days, along with the countless clues and theories Jo and him had discovered and made. His curiosity had always had a way of driving him to do things he typically wouldn’t do – there were some nights he laid awake at night, gazing at the ceilings and wondering how such a powerful, good-natured wizard could ever be framed for something so terrible.

Lastly, he had been a bit stressed lately. His grades sinking to dangerous lows – another terrible grade, and his mother was sure to send him a Howler, or something. Valentina D’Spacito was a kind woman, all smiles and hugs, but she tended to be quite destructive when it came to academics. It was one of the many things she prided herself on, having gone a long way in her life due to her brains. Somehow, Rafa didn’t receive those genetics. He was suffering for it, too. He had long since accepted his lack of passing grades, but it still gave him dread, awaiting the letters from his parents. His grades were definitely a sore spot, that was for sure. One he’d be sure to avoid in civil conversation.

Complaints aside, he knew better than anyone that dwelling on the negative would do him no good. Theory had never done anything, while action did. It was this mentality that had gotten him to the dungeons, a weary look in his eye and a pile of books in his hand, sagging as if they were to fall out of his grasp. He had no intention of waiting around in the doorway, having quickly picked a nice, cushy seat in the classroom. Dropping his belongings on the table in front of him, he slid into his seat, his elbow immediately coming to rest on the hard wood and his head resting on his hand. He yawned loudly, one of the many indications that he was purely exhausted.

His bored state didn’t long, however, as something had seemed to catch his eye. Rafa, being the easily-distracted boy he was, immediately went for the second glance – his eyes caught a familiar face. Red hair, green eyes, porcelain skin. Pretty features. It was the second year from the common room, the same one that he had spilled his guts to. The memory sent a red hue to his cheeks, and he bit his lip, immediately dismissing it.

Finally having something to do with himself, he quickly closed his books. Immediately, he rose to his feet, relocating to the spot beside her – he had to politely order a Hufflepuff to move, in the process, an act he was utterly not sorry for. It wasn’t that he was heartless. He just didn’t pay attention other people all that much. His mind clear of any possible disrespect, he made himself comfortable in the chair, setting his things down and facing Katrina. “What’s up, Katrina?” he asked the girl cordially, an eyebrow raised in a curious manner. “Got into any trouble lately?” It was a joke, of course – at first impression, the Gryffindor girl had come off as quiet and guarded. It seemed silly to think she would be getting into any fights. Though, perhaps she wasn’t everything Rafa thought she was – it wasn’t long before he took notice of the blue streak in her hair. A definitely bold move, he noted, but not a misguided one. “Dyed your hair, did you?” he asked, scooting up a bit closer to get a better look. From an outsider’s view, it looked as if he were a sibling, playful eager to learn more. “It’s a good look on you, Kat,” he added, a genuine tone coming to his voice. “I rather like it.” With those words, he opened his book, turning to their subsequent page in class.

Katrina smiled as Rafael made eye-contact. He made his way over and scooted a Hufflepuff over. At first glance he seemed tired. Katrina worried that things might be bothering him, or he was tired from lack of sleep. The façade melted away as he took a seat beside her. She brushed aside the worry and saved it for later.

"Haha, no trouble." Katrina smiled thinking of all of the things she had been up to. She had met a few people. She had just been catching up on work and reading a lot. Katrina had been offering to dye people's hair, and even doing it. She had spent more time with her kitten Boomerang than anything else. Boomerang had been keeping her up a while at night. She had been pretty stressed and she honestly needed to de-stress.

"Yep, I dyed it. I really enjoy dying," Katrina thought of the pink streak in Teiki's hair. It was so much fun to do that and did hers the same day as Katrina. The lion used to dye streaks in her hair every few weeks, just a streak, but it was fun. Katrina was enjoying fantasizing everyone with colored hair streaks. It was random, but Katrina was kind of spun up about everything.

"Not like actual dying. Wow that came out wrong," Katrina laughed at her mistakes. She blushed at Rafa's praise. He was one of the first people to notice. She remembered the real reason she had offered him over and drew out the card and prize.

"These are for you. I didn't know what you would want," Katrina thrusted out the letter and candy cane. She wished that she got something bigger. "Christmas gift,"

Katrina opened her book to the page and looked at the teacher.

CLASS FINISHED AFTER CONVERSATION

Katrina gathered her books and waited for Rafa. She had a silly grin on her face. She had taken notes enough during class. She had doodled on the sides of her Potions notebook. Katrina had an idea and she was excited to explain it all to Rafa.

"Come on! Lets go out to the Courtyard. I want to show you something," Katrina grinned and pulled Rafa along.
