07 July.
Magical Menagerie.
Midday.
In the second week of summer vacation, Mari woke up with a large smile on her face. Today was the day that would change her life for the better: she was to buy a bet. Never mind all the horrible things that had happened the year prior. Today, the day she got a pet, would be the start of something new. With a new friend, likely the owl she had always wanted, she would be cool, just like Lucy had always wanted her to be. Everyone would want to use her snowy owl to deliver their letters, because the owl would give off a strength that Mari still struggled to have.
As he did just before the Blossom Ball, Ewan, her father, had once again reminded Mari that he was proud of her and wanted to get her a pet to celebrate all of her accomplishments over the coming year. Of course, once she became the fifth prefect of Hufflepuff, the list of accomplishments grew longer - it now had two reasons:
Mari had not, however, anticipated that Lucy apparently also deserved a pet. The previous evening, Lucy had bounded into Mari's room with a smug look on her face, saying, "I'm getting a pet tomorrow too, you know."
Mari looked inquisitively at her. She loved Lucy, wouldn't dare say that Lucy didn't deserve a pet, but she hadn't been through nearly anything during her peaceful year at Holt. Besides, it was only fair, since Mari had spent an entire year without an animal, that Lucy spend her own first year sans pet. Maybe Lucy was just trolling her. With a small smile on her face, Mari asked, "What do you mean?"
"Mum. Dad. They told me that I could get a pet with you, celebrate my accomplishments."
"But...I didn't have a pet my first year," Mari murmured, tossing her gaze downwards. The stuffed owl in the corner looked like it was mocking her now. Her father hadn't even bothered to change up the lines when he told his other daughter she could get a pet too. What now, was Grace going to get an owl as well?
"So what?" Lucy retorted as she bounded out of the bedroom.
About twelve hours later, however, Mari's excitement put her disappointment on the back burner. She was getting an owl. All day she bubbled with excitement, ready to bring her new companion home. She could hardly eat because she was thinking so much about the owl, to the point where Lucy looked up from texting her boyfriend to ask, "What the hell is wrong with you?"
The shame of her younger sister yelling at her convinced Mari to at least eat a few bites of the ham sandwich her mother had prepared. Every since she'd been home, Mari craved the turkey sandwich meals in the Porcelain Palace; ham just didn't taste the same. But it was okay, because she was getting an owl today.
Finally, the moment arrived. The family traveled by floo powder to Diagon Alley, even though Ewan protested a bit because that part of magic still made him queasy. While the eldest two Haynes children and Ewan made their way to the Magical Menagerie, Isa and Grace traveled to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor. They would reconvene once the animals were purchased.
The clang of the bell electrified Mari's heart as she realized that this was truly happening. Rats grossly scurried around their containers, frogs croaked tunes, and cats purred, but it was only when Mari set eyes on the feathered fellows that she felt the butterflies a normal twelve-year-old would feel when they saw their crush. The Hufflepuff scurried over to the cages, curls bouncing happily behind her, as she eyed the possibilities. The snowy was the classic animal, yes, and she had loved the stuffed snowy from her childhood, but perhaps she'd like something different? That Morepork looked pretty cute...
"Hey!" Lucy shrieked behind her, causing Mari to lurch forward, crashing into the cage before her. Though the cage did not more, the Morepork owl before her screeched in displeasure; Mari smiled feebly at it. Glancing at the same Morepork, Lucy continued, "Dad, what about this one?"
Ewan shuffled over, clearly a bit uncomfortable by the pygmy puffs. Mari couldn't understand why; just because they were magic did not mean that Ewan had to be so hateful! Pygmies were cute. If she was so committed to the Morepork Lucy was just pointing at, she would maybe chosen a pygmy instead. "But..." Mari began slowly as her father approached, "I was gonna pick that one..."
"I saw it first," Lucy responded, sticking her tongue out playfully as if it was a joke.
"If she did, Mar," Ewan added, "It's only fair, I'm sorry. How about another one?"
"Daaaad," Lucy moaned. "Did you not just see what happened? Mari made this owl angry, I don't think she should be trusted with another."
The Hufflepuff's lip quivered; this wasn't how the day was supposed to go. Only she was supposed to get an owl, and the owl she wanted was right there, but somehow Lucy was getting a hold of it. Though the Mari of Hogwarts would fight back on something as unfair, she couldn't bring herself to argue against her family. They were a weakness, the people that Mari put above all else, even herself.
In that moment, one of the shopkeepers came over. He was a tall man, a little portly, with wire-rimmed glasses and a kind smile. Mari wondered if he had the whiskers to match some of the animals he sold. Nonetheless, he looked quite friendly and proved this with his words as he interjected the family's conversation to comment, "Ah, an owl I see! And what about you, hun?"
"I dunno..." Mari mumbled as she set her gaze upon the man's shoes. It was better than looking at his face; he'd be able to see the disappointment etched across her own.
"Aye, haven't figured it out yet? Let me show you something."
He motioned with his fingers to another corner of the shop, and the trio - Lucy stayed behind with her pet owl - walked over. As soon as she realized just what corner, though, Mari had to stifle a shriek. Rats?! This guy had to be bonkers! Who would want that as a pet? Not Mari. But Mari would listen, of course - she had to or else the man might throw her out for such disrespect.
"This rat," Mr. Witticker pointed to one, "he really needs a home. We just can't sell him...been here for his entire life, that one. We might have to, er" - he looked at Ewan - "get rid of it soon, if you know what I mean."
Ewan, like Mari, loved animals. Ewan, unlike Mari, liked rats. Mari knew she was in a world of trouble when she looked over at him and saw his face fall in disbelief as he took in the shopkeeper's words. Meanwhile, Mari stole glance at Lucy, who was now happily chattering away to her new owl as she wandered over to the rat crew. "Mari," Ewan began, interrupting her from the look of what could have been, "what do you think?"
Lucy had made it to her destination and squealed, "Oooh, a rat! How perfect for you, Mari!" Mari knew that this was revenge, knew that Lucy was only saying it because she had protested about her sister getting a pet the night before, but here she was, with everyone telling her this rat would be perfect, despite the fact that she found it the most repulsive thing to ever grace this earth.
"Um," Mari sputtered as she looked back towards the rat that she realized, with a sinking feeling, would soon become hers. The rat was one of the fattest things she had ever seen, as though he could get stuck in a manhole so that he needed to be saved by German animal rescue. Its whiskers were white, much like the shopkeepers. The brown-gray hue of its fur was perhaps the only thing appealing about it, because without it, its skin would embody the flaming pink hue of nakedness. No wonder nobody wanted it.
"So that's a yes?" Lucy interjected with a shrill voice to disrupt the uncomfortable silence. Mari blinked, uncertain what to say, and after a few moments' pause, Ewan nodded at the shopkeeper. Mari knew that she couldn't say no to a rat that wasn't going to get sold otherwise, but she sure did not want to let that "yes" come out into the universe.
The purchases were rung up and the family headed out to meet Isa and Grace at Florean Fortescue's. When Lucy babbled about naming her owl Oliver, after her boyfriend, Mari wondered what name would be appropriate for a rat. Gone were her ideas of names majestic, such as Aeolus or Njord. Now, her friend was...heck, she didn't care. Friend. That could be its name. It was ironic because she had none, but perhaps it could make its way to be her first friend, indeed.
Mari realized that she certainly was lucky that the common rat only lived one to two years.
