As much as Calanthe preferred not to admit it, the dorms were rather boring. While the castle called for her to explore, she forced herself to stay in, hiding away from any person who would entice her to be friendly. Calanthe was not here to make friends. In fact, if she brought home the news of friends, her mother would probably think that she was happy to be at Hogwarts. That was certainly not the case. Calanthe was unquestionably, indisputably unhappy to be at this… this stupid wizard school. And she needed her mother to know that - to feel guilty for sending Calanthe all this way to be dispirited.
Hiding herself in the Gryffindor dorms worked for a while. She was able to put up with the constant chattering of her roommates and their incessant need to slam the door on their way out, but the boredom was beginning to catch up with her. There was only so much she could do while concealed under the sheets of her bed. Even taking in the stunning view from the windows did little to stifle her restlessness. And once the boredom started annoying Calanthe, so did her roommates. Their harmless gossip and continuous door-slamming had started getting on the young witch’s nerves.
To avoid saying something she could regret, Calanthe found herself doing the thing she tried to stay away from. She started wandering the halls of her new, hopefully temporary home in search of a hideaway. She liked the prospects of the Quidditch Stands. Not many people went up there on the weekends and it would get much colder closer to December which meant even less students would be present to irk the life out of her. But Calanthe wanted to scope out all the possible spaces so she could make an informed decision. It was a technique she learned while playing D&D. She never charged into battle without knowing every piece of information.
This is most definitely not an excuse to explore the castle. I’m just trying to find a place to hide.
She could keep telling herself that, but deep down, Calanthe knew the truth.
On scouring the second floor, she came across a lavatory that seemed to be abandoned. Calanthe had heard talk about the abandoned toilets from listening in to her roommates’ conversations and at the Great Hall, where she sat alone during meals. There was a ghost haunting the area, presumably. But the girl was sure that her scornful glare could scare off even the most frightening ghost that Hogwarts had to offer.
Barging into the lavatory, Calanthe was unsurprised to find the place empty. She only had to spend a few seconds there to determine that it was not going to do. The place was unkempt, with broken mirrors and pieces of stall doors littering the floor. She would either have to put in the work to clean it or find someplace else. Putting off that decision. Calanthe chose to poke around the room more. The sound of footsteps entering the room caused her to sigh. She could never be alone for long in this place.
“This room is occupied. You should leave.”

Calvin was a curious spirit by nature. As a boy who had only just discovered about the wonders of the wizarding world a little less than a year ago, Hogwarts fascinated him. He'd spent the vast majority of his free time thus far exploring every nook and cranny of the place. Granted, it should have been dedicated to doing his classwork, but... Who needed good grades when there was excitement around every corner?! His academic marks left something to be desired, certainly, but that was the least of his concerns. Besides, so early in the year? There would be plenty of time to make up for his P's and D's later.
One particular spot of interest that intrigued him was the Abandoned Toilets. Cal wanted to know why they were abandoned, and he wanted to check the spot out. He was slightly disappointed to find himself in a rank looking washroom, but maybe there was more to be discovered if he explored further. He made no attempt to disguise or quiet his footsteps, expecting to be alone for the most part.
Not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, Calvin's overactive imagination immediately started conjuring up what (or who) could have said the warning. Thoughts raced in his head, all of which were focused on considering the potential reasons for the noise (none of which even began to touch on the obvious potential that, simply, someone else was there). Perhaps it was a ghost!? He'd learned that those existed not too long ago, and an abandoned corner of Hogwarts seemed like the perfect place for a spirit to linger, unbothered. At least, unbothered for now.“This room is occupied. You should leave.”
However, despite his sinister thoughts, Calvin simply pressed on. Was he courageous, or just stupid? It didn't matter of course, because the effect was the same. "Who're you?!" he retorted in accusatory fashion, voice tinged with an edge that was largely due to his nerves. Through force of will he calmed himself down as he elaborated. Calvin's tone was significantly more even as he stated, "I'm just exploring... Didn't meant to take you by surprise." Ah yes, it was definitely the other person who was startled. Of course, the boy was simply projecting, but the unknown voice didn't have to know that!

The accusatory tone of the disembodied voice, undoubtedly male, would not have bothered Calanthe a few months ago. In fact, she would have probably approached the voice in an empathetic manner and tried to befriend them. Today, the receptors in her brain were set off, flaring in some sort of anger that used to be foreign to the girl, but was recently becoming natural to her. The pounding in her head was enough to block out the voice’s calmer, second response.
Stepping out from behind a row of stalls, she got a good view of her antagonizer. The boy was taller than her, like most others in this damned school, and she could not quite make out any emotions on his face.
“I should be asking you that, Bowlcut. Why are you even here in the girls’ lavatory? Do you have any decency?” her eyes shone like they were dipped in the fire that fueled her anger. Of course, Calanthe had no way of knowing if she was standing in the girls’ or boys’ toilets – there were no urinals that could be spotted upon first glance; however, she had not toured the entire room just yet – but the boy did not need to know that. Perhaps he had been aimlessly wandering and was not astute enough to notice the signage of the washrooms, if there were any at all.
