Returning from the winter holidays Adlai had once again boarded the magical train of platform 9 3/4 and eventually also boarded the miniature boats that sailed across the Great Lake to Hogwarts. However, she did this all while wearing Peysuföt, which is the national Icelandic costume that her grandmother (on her fathers side) had gifted her on the morning of New Year’s Eve.

Adlai had promised her grandmother she’d wear it and of course she stuck to her word as her father had pushed the idea of her wearing it back to school. Her mother of course tried to object to what her husband proposed but knew her efforts would go to waste.

Down the hallway she trudged onward. Her trunk heavier than what it was when she first arrived at Hogwarts. While at home Adlai had made it her mission to bring her favorite games back to Hogwarts with her since she didn’t understand much about wizard sports or board games. In her trunk were two tennis racquets, a small tube of tennis balls, more of her favorite books and a tape recorder that was jam packed with all of her favorite songs.

However, due to the extra luggage her trunk seemed to have a wide enough gap for one of her head scarfs to have found its freedom. Holding onto her trunk by a thread it dragged across the hall floor.

[font=Segoe Print]Rafa didn’t help people often. It wasn’t like he was against it, or anything – his simple, broken-record-player mentality he had going was more to blame than anything. His mom would always joke around, comparing him to the basset hound she used to own as a child. The dogs are great sniffers, she would say. But the act of following a scent, all of their attention to surroundings is lost. What’s funny is, whenever they finally find what they’re looking for, they stick their heads up – only to find that they have no idea where they are. It was a great comparison, he was ashamed to admit. He would get so focused on all his deadlines, that he would completely disregard his surroundings. The little things just flew right past him.

Right now, his attention was focused on hanging up banners for the boys’ club. The next meeting was scary soon, actually – in a week, that is. And, as much as it pained him to admit, he was realizing more than ever how much of an effort he was going to have to put into winning their upcoming prank war. Perhaps his newfound caution had to have something do with his recent time spent with Jo – she had really proven her quick-thinking and competitive drive, again and again. Assuming all the girls were like that, he would definitely need all hands on deck. Brains to balance out the brawn. And a damper on the testosterone. Jesus, it was annoying.

Shaking the thought from his head with a wry smile, he stapled to the bulletin board the last poster of the day. He stood back, admiring his work with a bright look and wiping his sweaty hand on his pants – he was dressed quite simply today, his trademark red Hollisters’ sweatshirt ever present, matched with some dirty sneakers, white with grass stains. His Quidditch shoes, the only ‘clean’ ones he had at the moment. He tucked the mini-stapler back in his sweatshirt pocket carefully, a nostalgic grin coming to his face. A humorous gift from his uncle. No way you’ll find a use for it, Diego had said in his owl. Boy, did Rafa prove him wrong. It was about then, though, that he proverbially ‘stuck his head up’ – he looked around, finally taking in the steady wave of students streaming in from the Entrance Hall. It’s the people who took the break off, he absently noted. Though, he didn’t have much time to ponder this anymore, as he saw something that made his senses tingle in a Peter-Parker sort of way. One of the students, a girl he hadn’t met before, was dragging her luggage along – a scarf was hanging out the bottom, dragging against the floor.

Well, now, he couldn’t just let her go, dragging it through the dirty floors. That would be unchivalrous of him. Without tact or much thinking, the words came out of his mouth. “Hey, wait up!” he called – it wasn’t like he knew her name or anything, so getting the point across would probably harder than he expected. “Your scarf is dragging on the floor!” This statement came off a bit pleading, the dragging having gotten on his nerves a bit. Must be an OCD thing, he inwardly shrugged. Hopefully that statement alone would compel her to look down or something – just in case, though, he left his position beside the bulletin board tp try to catch up with her.
OOC: He hasn’t noticed her clothing yet, but he will 😉

Over the loud chatter of the crowd of students Adlai heard someone yelling. She wasn’t sure who they were yelling to and thus her curiosity got the best of her. Turning around she saw a boy approaching her. She had never seen him before. “Your scarf is dragging on the floor!” she heard him yell.

Looking down she noticed her scarf. With an irritated groan to herself she bent down and picked it up. Looking at the gap the scarf had slipped through she knew she may have to take some things out and carry them back to her dorm room. She didn’t mind it actually, after all she knew something like this might happen since she had to practically slam her trunk closed before leaving for the train station.

Setting her trunk down by her side she looked back up to find the boy getting closer to her.
Why would he care about something as simple as a scarf?- She wondered.

It’s not like people hadn’t been kind to her since she arrived to Hogwarts however, there was a feeling of hesitation in some people’s interactions with her once they found out she was a muggle born. Because of this meeting new people at Hogwarts made her a bit more anxious than usual.

[font=Segoe Print]To his relief, the girl stopped, and for that, he was thankful. Trailing after her like a fanboy felt a bit humiliating, he would admit – the only reason he was doing this, he justified, was to be chivalrous. It was his code, the oath he had made several years ago with his best mates. To stand by idly, knowing a girl needed his help, was betraying his code. It wasn’t a knight-in-shining-armor thing. It was simply an integrity thing, something he refused to let tarnish his record. He simply didn’t have a choice.

That being said, it did feel good to help. He definitely wouldn’t make a habit of this ‘following girls’ thing, but for just this once, he would allow himself to do just that. It was what a real man would do, he assured himself, so it didn’t really matter what others thought. He knew what he was doing, and surely she knew, so wasn’t that enough? “Hey, erm, need some help, there?” he offered to further prove his thoughts to himself, a rather warm look on his face. He didn’t want people to get the wrong idea about him, as they often did. He had quite the reputation for using his fists instead of his head, but that wasn’t always the case. He could get quite volatile, yes, but only when given the reason. It wasn’t like he went around picking fights, or anything.

He felt rather useless, standing there and watching her take care of her things. Trying to be productive, he knelt down, offering a hand. “Don’t know if it’s worth asking, but how was your break?” he joked good naturedly, his Hispanic slipping out. “See any snow?” Snow was amazing, that was for sure. Here at Hogwarts was the first time he had actually ever been out in it, and it had been quite an amazing experience. And snowball fights. That warfare alone was enough to brighten his Christmas. He was honestly quite interested in what she had to say about the matter. Snow’s probably not that special to her, he inwardly sighed, but I guess everyone’s experiences are different. It may be nice to hear her take on the subject.

It was around then that he noticed her clothing – she was wearing this dress, one of which he had never seen the likes of before. [He was rather uneducated. On top of that, knew absolutely nothing about Iceland. Nothing…] The dress was a bold choice, a look that he was sure not many people could pull off. She was definitely one of the few exceptions. “Like your dress,” he muttered, a wry smile on his face. It gave him a bit of pride, seeing people doing different things. Being independent. It was admirable. A great first impression, that was for sure.

Hey, erm, need some help, there?” the boy asked once he reached her. With a faint smile Adlai shook her head. “No, but thank you though. And thank you for letting me know my scarf had fallen out.”

Now that he was closer to her, she could get a better look at him. He wasn’t terribly handsome, but he was good looking for a boy in their grade. He seemed kind just based off the fact that he seemingly ran after her about her scarf dragging.

The boy knelt down and offered his hand to her. Adlai took it and arose back to her feet. Her hand was still stiff and cold from the fridge weather of Wales.
Don’t know if it’s worth asking, but how was your break?” the boy asked.
“It was very good thank you! How was yours?”

Adlai thought back on all the fun she had back at home. Her sisters jumping around, the sound of her grandparents nagging at her parents, the echo from the occasional static from the television...she missed it already.

See any snow?
“Of Course!” Adlai exclaimed. When her sisters and her were shoveling the drive way and the sidewalk on their block they decided it would be a good idea to barricade the adults inside with all the snow. However, that idea didn’t go so well. Adlai giggled thinking about it.

Very faintly Adlai could hear the boy say something else. “Like your dress,” her cheeks burned red.
“Really?” She asked. Although it was heavy, itchy and the shoes she wore pinched her feet, Adlai didn’t mind it when she saw that by wearing something like this could bring other people joy. Thus, she returned a compliment. “I like your shirt.”

[font=Segoe Print]“No," Adlai said, “But thank you, though. And, thank you for letting me know my scarf had fallen out.”

It felt good to be thanked. Not in an arrogant way, of course – it was just the fact that his assistance had been of some use that gave him the sprouting feeling of satisfaction in his chest. A bright look made its way onto his face, his hands tucking themselves in his pockets in a simple way. “It’s no problem,” he told her honestly. Because, it wasn’t, really. Sure, he may have had his own ‘selfish’ reasons, but it wasn’t like he was about to tell her. “OCD, I suppose.” He gave her a shrug, a knowing look crossing his face. “Hate to see you ruin a perfectly good scarf. That would be ruddy awful.”

After that, she had asked him how his break was. His grin kind of wavered at the sound of the question. It was back in a moment, though, shielding his true feelings regarding the subject. “Yeah, it was fine,” he told her. “Got a lot done.” He offered her an easy look to further his response, though his mind was spiraling into his thoughts. He hadn’t been out of the school, actually. Him and Jo had stumbled on some important information regarding the Potter Trial and Lear’s disappearance, so as a result, he had opted to stay. It would have been selfish to leave – something important could have happened while he was gone, and him not being around to help wasn’t an option. Though, he would admit, he was pretty disappointed that he never got to see his family over the break. It sounded like they had had loads of fun, as they did every Christmas. What had brightened his Christmas, though, was his uncle Diego’s messages. The man always sent the funniest letters, and though their explanations were simple, he found himself reading them over and over again. His Christmas at Hogwarts wasn’t the best, but it was far from terrible. He’d had plenty of interesting run-ins, that was for sure.

It occurred to him that he had zoned out – he shook his head, back to the present with the mysterious girl. She had been talking, but to Rafa’s horror, he had lost a lot of her dialogue in his blanked out state. Lovely. He felt it there, somewhere far in his chest. Guilt, that is. He didn’t dwell on it, though, wasting no time in pushing the thoughts from his head. There was no need to stop everything over a simple mistake – he would get over it.

“I like your shirt.”

“Oh, yeah?” That was definitely interesting to hear – he didn’t get that a lot. He raised an eyebrow in disbelief, a playful smirk playing on his lips. “I dunno. Seems too safe, if you ask me,” he said. “But I like Hollister – makes me feel myself, I guess.” It was a weird feeling to describe, how different clothes could make you feel. Over the years he had tried out a lot of different things, but there was only ever one hoodie that he enjoyed wearing. It gave him an original feeling, like he was wearing his red personality out for everyone to see. “Thanks, mate,” he added at the end, a genuine tone to his voice.

A thought then suddenly came to him. He had always been impulsive, all action and no thought to his words. And, really, he probably should have though out his words a bit more, or taken care to make sure his words couldn’t be taken the wrong way. It was definitely a strange question to ask, he’d admit it. But before he could think of a way to reword it in a tactful fashion, the words escaped his lips before he could stop them. “Hey, what house are you?” he asked in a rushed fashion, seemingly deep in thought. Though, at the sound of the question, he grew a bit embarrassed, his face stayed neutral, but his cheeks heated up in the slightest, and rubbed his neck out of impulse. “Not that it matters all that much. It’s just, I don’t see you in Gryffindor at all. But, then again, I don’t see you really anywhere.” It was a bit hard to guess what house she was in at the moment, but he’d amuse himself in trying to figure it out. She was kind, a seemingly good soul, so Hufflepuff was definitely in question. On the other side, her boldness in clothing gave her a sort of Gryffindor hue. He hadn’t yet seen anything to lead him to believe that she might be Ravenclaw or Slytherin, but that wasn’t to say that she couldn’t be either of the two. At the moment, he had it narrowed down to Hufflepuff or Gryffindor – he was leaning more towards Hufflepuff, given that he hadn’t seen her in the common room before.

“How about it, then?” he further asked, a kind nature flooding through his words. “What’s the lucky house?”

“Hey, what house are you?” this was a common question heard by many students. Of course it was, since one’s house could determine almost everything at Hogwarts.

When Adlai’s train buddy and now best friend, Leah, explained to her what the houses were and the qualities house members had Adlai had thought herself to be a Ravenclaw. However, she knew being a Hufflepuff would be a bit more likely for her and sulked a little bit knowing for sure the Slytherin house was out of her league.

What’s the lucky house?” the boy edged on seemingly eager to know where the sorting hat had so wisely placed her. “Hufflepuff.” She said proudly as she stuck her head up, her nose pointing into the air.
“Based on what you’ve said I can only assume that your...Gryffindor, right?” after all he had mentioned the Gryffindor common room.

She then began to wonder where on earth that could be. She didn’t even know if she has ever really even met a Ravenclaw either but she’s swung by the Slytherin common room a few times to catch up with her friend’s Virgil and Isaac.

Jo would be the one to ask all these house questions to since she is the brave leader of the Acid Pop club. With that thought Adlai’s mind wondered once again,
When is the nesting club meeting?-She asked herself.

[font=Segoe Print]Hufflepuff – he did not find himself surprised in the least. She had seemed more like a Hufflepuff anyways, with her easygoing nature and smiles. Compliments. At first impression, she gave off a pleasurable atmosphere, the kind people just seemed to gravitate towards. It was quite an amusing thought, actually. This spark of imagination led him down an entirely new trail of ideas, and soon enough, he found himself wondering what exactly it was like to be a Hufflepuff. It had to a harrowing work, truly, the patience it had to take. Very unlike him. People got on his nerves quite quickly – it was quite evident by rumor that he had quite a hothead and a dangerous tongue on him. But that was okay – it was an important part of his being, one he would never trade for anything. “You are correct in presuming I am a Gryffindor,” he commented easily, a very Slytherin-like grin appearing on his face. “I proudly represent my house, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.” Of course, he was referring to his attitude. “I quite love being a lion,” he also added, his mischievous look fading into one of a nostalgic air, tucking his lip between his teeth. “I don’t know. It’s probably because I’m danger-prone.”

He quite certainly was, it was a known fact. He longed for the rush of adrenaline he gained every time he did something edgy. It gave him an immortal feeling, one of immense power and strength – under the influence of his ‘danger-mode’, he felt as if he could take over the world. And, though he had no desire to do such a thing, it still was a good feeling to have. Just the thought of it gave him a bright look, his fists clenching and unclenching by reflex. Yes, he loved danger, and he wouldn’t deny it. While it was quite a risky trait to have, it had proven quite useful in the more dangerous times, when there was less thinking and more action.

Having dozed off again, he shook his head, clearing the nostalgic thoughts from his brain. Looking over at the girl, he decided to ask his next question. “What’s Hufflepuff like, then?” he wondered aloud. “I mean, what’s your take? I suppose everyone’s perspective is different.” Yes, he was back to his previous thoughts. Could you blame him? Many people underestimated Hufflepuff, but Rafa knew better. They held just as much power as every other house of Hogwarts, as they had proven many a time. While some saw their kindness and compassion as a weakness, Rafa saw it as a strong trait. One that he longed to have sometimes. Alas, his mind hadn’t been wired in such a way. He would leave the compassionate lifestyle to his imagination – he always had striven to make friends, but oftentimes this had ended in making enemies. He wasn’t doing too bad as of the moment, though. At least that was a good sign.

“Hufflepuff is...very welcoming and peaceful. I can say quite proudly that any and everyone from different walks of life would be humbly excepted there. Hufflepuff, as a whole, is empathic...if that’s the right word to use.” Adlai said as she pondered on her times in the common room and her dorm.

Sadly she didn’t remember much since she only really spoke to Leah in the common room. She wasn’t even that close yet with her club members. Though they brought her in with open arms.
How desperately she wished her friends from her previous schools could be here with her, to experience this with her. Maybe then she wouldn’t have to lie about her classes and exams in her letters. Maybe then her family wouldn’t have to be so closed off from the world around them as they are now.
Her mind wonders to the memory of her fathers face when he read her Hogwarts admissions letter. He looked petrified, paler than her mother.

Bringing herself back to reality she quickly returned the boys question. “And you? What’s Gryffindor like? In your perspective of course.” Adlai had heard much about Gryffindor. How it was the house of the valiant Harry Potter, who’s story she did not know the whole of yet. She’d have to ask Jo or Leah the next time she saw them.

[font=Segoe Print]“And you? What’s Gryffindor like? In your perspective, of course.”

What was Gryffindor like? That certainly was quite the interesting inquiry. In all honesty, the boy hadn't taken a moment to truly think about how he felt about his house, having been busy with homework and drama and countless other harrowing tasks that filled the life of a first year. He allowed himself a moment to ponder her question, his brows furrowing and his lip tucking between his teeth as he searched for the right answer. "Gryffindor is…. crazy, to say the least," he started with a laugh, a smile spreading across his face. "Most of us are rather brave – but, strangely enough, I don’t think that’s what defines us. Not all of us have thick skin, and not all of us can run willingly into fires. No, I think what defines us is…” he could barely recognize the words coming out of his own mouth, “our courage. Y’know, the resilience through hardships, and the ability to stand strong in the face of danger and adversity.”

There certainly was a great deal of adversity in the Lion House, after all, Rafael noted with a grimace. “The good majority of us don’t have filters,” he added quietly, a thoughtful tone to his voice. “We say things they don't mean way too often, and it gets in the way of relationships more times than one could count. Privacy is a bit scarce, too. A brash house, certainly…." he paused for a moment, chewing his lip, trying to search for a way to bring it all together. "But it's home."

He allowed his words to sink into his brain for a moment, trying to make sense of what exactly he had just said. "….Yeah," he exhaled, rubbing his neck wryly. "That's about right, I suppose.” For some reason, his very words reminded him of a particular girl, one in which he particularly despised in a lovely sort of way. Jo Morgan. One of the only girls he enjoyed sharing company with, a Gryffindor if he’d ever seen one. It was a personality like hers that made Raf fall in love with his house – there was no treading on glass, no filter, no etiquette necessary for people such as Jo. He didn’t feel as if he were one wrong word away from getting told off, or losing a relationship, or anything of the sort when he was in her company. It certainly was a good feeling, one of the very things that made her such a valuable mate… even if he were never able to admit it.

In the midst of his thoughts, his eyes had wandered down to his watch – a realization came to him just then. Oh, Jesus, I’ve been keeping her behind. His cheeks gaining a tint of red, he offered her an apologetic look, taking a step back and slipping his hands into his pockets. "Hey, I'm sorry for holding you up. Seems as if the hall has cleared a bit.” A smile slipped on his features once more, and he offered the mysterious girl a wave. “Well, I'll leave you to your trek. Stay safe, watch the stairs.”

He turned around to leave without another thought, his mind already formulating plans for a Quidditch Practice – but soon stopped himself. There was one thing the two had left unaddressed, a mystery that was surely going to keep him up at night if he didn’t say anything. Before he could even stop to formulate a proper thought, the words slipped out of his mouth. "Hey, you got a name?" he asked, a questioning look on his face. “I mean, seems like a right shame, to just keep calling you ‘that girl.’” A prodding grin slipped itself onto his face, and he embraced it, crossing his arms and nodding to her in a slightly arrogant way. Though, the purpose of the grin was quite obvious, as a humorous gaze danced in his eyes, a subtle indication to his joking nature.
