Please Don't Cry
Clarisse was still reeling from what she had said to that girl, nervously glancing behind her to make sure she wasn't being instantly followed. The Ravenclaw couldn't take an actual confrontation - after all, it was one thing to say something, it was another to have a conversation after that. Besides, she didn't want to deal with that. Oliver seemed to be upset and it was easier to distract herself with that.
Although she wasn't the most caring of people, Clarisse could recognise when someone needed support. And she'd feel bad leaving him, because who else was there, who knew why he was upset?
Hurrying her pace, she chased after the boy. The sobs had given away which direction he had started in, and with a quick run she caught up to Oliver eventually. From behind, she wasn't certain whether he was still visibly upset, but she knew that it would be surprising to get over it so quickly.
"Hey," she called out, speaking softly so she didn't shock him when she came closer, "Are you alright?" The girl settled in to be beside him, trying not to stare at him whatever his case was. "That girl - do you know her? She's awful. I can't believe her. Don't listen to what she said. She's not worth it."
Comforting people was hard. Hopefully, she was doing something right.

Please Don't Cry
Oliver had slowed down by now, heading towards the quietest area he could find. He quietly whimpered and then returned to sobbing in a cycle of miserableness. Why was everyone so mean to him? Why had he made no friends in a year? Why didn't he look like the other kids? These were some of the few questions pouring through the twelve year olds mind.
Then he heard her footsteps and voice. Clarisse. They shared the same class and she was pretty cool. She seemed smart, which to Oliver was awesome.
He turned around to her, her knuckles quickly wiping tears away as he did. With red, wattery eyes, he looked at her. "Hey," he quietly said back to her, looking at her in the eyes, then at her feet. He sniffled while she asked him about the Slytherin. She was probably close by, so he was still a bit scared.
With a huge sigh, he collapsed and sat against the wall, relaxing with his legs spread out and his hands landing on the floor. He shook his head," I've never met her before. She's just another Slytherin bully... but she wasn't wrong... it made me cry cause it's true," he said, then moaned until a sob revved up and he begun crying into his hands.

Please Don't Cry
He was still crying. It made her feel more awkward, standing there and trying her best to help. Her hands twisted into her robes and the girl glanced down nervously after they had made eye contact. Was she meant to do more? The boy was on the ground now, and she felt awkward standing. Could she sit next to him? Opposite him? Or was that too invasive? Standing wasn't an option though, either, so the girl moved to squat, then sit beside him. Unlike him, who had spread out, she pulled her knees up and rested her chin on them.
"I thought all the stuff they said about Slytherin was just stupid stereotypes," she mumbled, mainly to herself, "But they must come from people like her, don't they?"
She glanced over to Oliver. He was back into tears and she didn't know what to say. Tentatively, she reached a hand out and tapped lightly on his shoulder, unsure whether it was comforting or just annoying. It was true what he had said, that what the Slytherin had said was true. He was chubby. Clarisse couldn't deny that. But still, she couldn't leave it at that, could she?
"Don't listen to her! Does it matter, anyway? You'll grow out of it." That's what parents said, right? First wide, then tall. "Don't cry. Please don't cry. There's nothing wrong with you." Awkwardly, she shifted closer, resting her head on his shoulder. That was better than the awkward patting, at least.

Please Don't Cry
"I haven't met a nice Slytherin... ever!" Oliver told, his ever being a joined in with a sob. His chest buckled but then Clarisse sat with him. Why was she staying so long? Oliver was a bit confused. He couldn't understand such actions after a whole year of people answering him and walking away. He went quiet as she spoke, listening to her. She was really smart, Oliver didn't know much about Clarisse but he knew she was smart. She read books often, so she oughtta be. Being so, he believed what she was saying, and nodded with a murmer as it made him feel better. As soon as Clarisse's head rested on his cushioned shoulder, he went very slow with everything, even his breathing, and his eyes widened. He looked at her head.
Wow, it's... it's there. Oliver couldn't believe it. Kids didn't even shake his hand when he first met them. Now a girl was trying to cheer him up and showing sympathy for him. He wiped his cheek, it was soaking. His entire cheek was wet. Then, he ever so slowly lowered it onto her head. He pulled away at first, her hair was a bit ticklish. Trying again, he managed to tuck her head in with his round cheek. At the quietest volume possible, he sniffed in, absorbing the aroma of her hair. He closed his eyes. Wow...
"Clarisse?" Oliver asked, waiting for her to respond. When she would, he'd ask," do you want to be pals?" before giving a small sniffle.

Oliver admitted that his experiences with the house of snakes was overwhelmingly negative. Clarisse herself didn't know many, but at least she could make claims like he did. She let him finish his sobbing, feeling how he slowed as she tried to comfort him. Had she done it right then? Her chest rose with pride with learning that she wasn't useless at comforting someone, but she tried to keep herself still.
A wet cheek was slowly lowered around her head. Clarisse bit her lip, waiting as he made himself comfortable, wondering what she was doing. But as he settled, she relaxed, almost in a dream like state.
"Yes, Oliver?" she replied softly, wondering what he had to say. What he had to say without just coming right out and saying it out loud straight away. With a sniffle, he continued. "Do I..." Clarisse smiled softly, aware that he wouldn't see it. Even she knew that he didn't need to ask. Surely her sitting here, trying to comfort him with her lack of ability to comfort him, showed exactly what he wanted her to say. "Of course I want to be pals. We are pals, aren't we?" She nudged him slightly, playfully. "Of course, it'll require a four galleon deposit," she added, hoping a joke would cheer him up, "Do you want to pay now or later?"

Please Don't Cry
Oliver sat there and just stared at the wall facing them, his eyes red and his heart beating from the anger it brought him when pushed over the edge to crying. He stayed partially rigid, not even placing the weight of his head on Clarisse.
When she pondered with "Do I
..." Oliver immediately started stuttering with a reason why, but he couldn't even get it out before she nudged him. "We are pals!" he confirmed, a little more serious than Clarisse. He gave a little sniffle casually as he listened to her, then thought. "Can I pay in 2 sickle monthly installments on that deposit?" he asked quietly.
Oliver looked down the hallway, then thought for a moment. He hadn't really thought about it till now. "We didn't bring our books, hopefully they're still there..." he said, wondering if anyone would come and steal his forgotten Hogwarts, A History. Oliver wasn't really doing very well in school this year. He was getting grades that were barely holding him up from failure. Over summer he had promised himself he'd get better, and catch up on the school work. His father would force him to anyway. "How have your results been this year?" Oliver asked, wanting to know. He knew she was smart but never got to discuss it with her. It was the reason why he even sat beside her in the hall, being smart attracted Oliver.

The boy was a little more serious than Clarisse, but she took his statement as a joke to match her own and nudged him again. "Only if you keep up with payments!" she teased, shifting a little to separate from him. Not too much to indicate any sort of repulsion or eagerness to get away - she was careful of that. Just enough to sit up a little more comfortably, so she speak to him a little easier.
"I'm sure they will be. I mean, everyone in the school has to have a copy." For a moment, she pondered, about who would take them. A student who had lost theirs, misplaced it, ruined it, couldn't be bothered to go back up to the dorm to get their own. But Oliver had spoken again and she was pulled back to their conversations. "My results?" she parroted, saying it just so she could realise what he had asked. "They've been alright. I haven't had many of them back yet." What she had gotten back had just been Os, but she didn't want to say it outright, in case it made the boy feel bad about his own grades. He was in such a fragile state.
Still, her curiosity urged her to ask. "How about yours?"

Oliver gave a small smile, sitting up straight. He knew she was joking but he couldn't help but to play along, it was the easiest reaction he could give. He was unaware he actually had a tendency to look for affection, and playing dumb to a tease was one way to get it. A negative trait perhaps, one that might degrade over time.
Oliver begun to laugh as she asked about his grades. He knew Clarisse had good grades. He saw her in class, and she's much more focused when studying than he is. His laugh wasn't a happy one, one more in humour of his own hopelessness. "They're bad.. heh. Like, really bad," he told," I'm barely scraping As. I can cast spells good but I can't remember anything about what's important about this wizard or how to act in herbology class. I'd say they're silly but you probably still know the answers," Oliver smiled as he looked at her, brows raised. He seemed detached from himself, brought to the point where he can look at himself and just know he was not good at school. He was humble though, cause he was an ace at learning spells and casting them.
"Can we walk? My bum is getting sore from being flattened," he asked, sitting on the hard, stone floor. Probably not the best way to talk to a girl...

Please Don't Cry
Oliver laughed, in a self-deprecating sort of way, as he announced his grades. Barely scraping As. For a moment, she lingered confused, then remembered that an A at Hogwarts was the lowest pass, rather than a highest.
Which seemed ridiculous because she knew Oliver was amazing at spell work. She had seen him in Charms - he seemed capable of casting every spell in his first go, perfectly. As he continued, the reason behind his poor grades came to light and as she expected it wasn't because of his skill as an actual wizard.
"They are silly!" she called out, trying to reassure him, but she probably did know the answers, like he had guessed. Clarisse was lucky that she was a sponge. Her memory wasn't perfect - of course it wasn't - but things soaked into her even if she wasn't fully focused. Oliver was clearly the opposite.
"Besides," she added, "You are the best wizard I've seen. You're ridiculously good at spells. Like really really good. I don't understand how anyone can be that good. So who cares if you know what date the Gargoyle Strike was? You can cast a better Lumos than the rest of us!"
Smiling softly, she wondered if he would need any more reassurance. Perhaps she should have offered to help or something, give him her notes or explained a topic?
He had moved on to his flattened bum. Clarisse gave a giggle, pulling herself up before extending a hand to Oliver to drag him up with her too. "I agree - stone floors aren't exactly made to be sat on!"

Oliver smiled, enjoying hearing about good of a spell caster he was. He grew a small blush and slapped the compliments away with a swipe of the air, looking quite goofy as he tried to hide his smile. As he heard about the Gargoyle Strike, he shook his head and muttered," I don't even know what the Gargoyle Strike is..." he raised his brows, not surprised with himself though. History of Magic was probably his weakest subject, as there was nothing but words in that one.
He grabbed Clarisse's hand but he could tell he was just going to pull her down. Oliver used both his arms and legs to heave his little, wide body off the floor, using a bit of Clarisse's pull. He dusted off his backside without shame and then stretched out with a very open mouthed yawn. "Lets go get our books, shall we? It's getting a bit late and I don't remember eating in the cast hour," Oliver told, finishing that last bit quietly. He looked at Clarisse, what a nice pal. Oliver hadn't made a friend all year and here was a girl minding him while he cried. She wasn't a loser like him either, she wasn't the that popular, but she was smart and able to look after herself. At least that's how Oliver saw her.
He looked away quickly, realising he had just been staring at her for awhile as he moved slowly towards the Main Hall.
