One Less Prefect
Her heart was heavy as she left, filling slowly with regret. Lucette dragged the heel of her hand along her tear-stained face, never imagining she'd bring herself to this. Just moments ago, she had turned in her resignation as a Slytherin Prefect. Why had she done it? She herself wasn't even too sure. There was something about the job that just... held too much pressure. Too many eyes. Too many people to disappoint. She could never live up to her sister. She could never live up to her mother's expectations. To Whom it May Concern:
The time I have spent as a prefect for the venerated house of Slytherin was an absolute honor. All the time I have spent dedicated to my peers will always remain a fond memory. However, I cannot continue my duties as I am now. I am incapable of performing my duties due to personal reasons, and shall step down from my position in order to free it up for someone who can. If I am ever needed, I shall not hesitate to assist those in need. Although I am not a prefect anymore, that does not mean I'll ever stop being a companion to those who need one.
Lucette Brielle, First Year Slytherin
Lucette was trying to keep herself composed as she could; She couldn't afford to have an attack, not now. That was until her chest rang out with pain. Wheezing, her hand pressed against the wall, leaning on it as her only support as her other hand gripped onto the cloth of her T-Shirt. Her lungs strangled her, keeping carbon dioxide from leaving and keeping oxygen from entering. She hadn't felt this pain in so long. It didn't take long for her knees to buckle, falling over onto them. The pain radiated, both mentally and physically. What had she just done?! She so badly wanted to run back, tell them she had made a mistake, but her departure was already set in stone. Lucette's ears rang with a screeching pain as her hands reached for the device in her robe, shaking it and hearing it's comforting rattle. Bringing the mouthpiece to her lips, she pressed down on her inhaler, breathing in sharply. Moments passed. She held her breath. Although it was a short ten seconds, it gave her time to breathe.
On the plus side of it all, she was free. She was free of her mother's grasp, free of her sister's. They'd shun her for leaving such a position of power, but it wasn't for them to have a say. They would never have a say ever again. She had wanted so badly to surpass her sister, to have her mother acknowledge her, but not anymore. She was freeing herself of the constrictions of constantly wanting her mother's validation, a mother who never really loved her. No more rules for her. No more. Lucette was finally allowing herself to breathe for the first time. This was a new chapter in her story, and no one was going to take that away from her.
The first breath she took as truly the first breath of her living days. No more pretending. No more chasing after a love that would never reciprocate. No more trying to impress those who didn't matter. This day, no... This life was hers for the taking. Tears streams down her face, her body curling into itself as she sat, sobbing into her hands. It was messy, it was unattractive, but she couldn't care less. That was not important. For the first time in her life, she was free to be herself.
Cleansing sobs rang through the hall, signaling a lost soul being born anew.
