All Out of Patience
It was early in the evening as Riku walked through the grounds and towards the great lake; searching for a quiet place to focus on his studies.
He wasn't one for the outdoors, but this had been one of the techniques his mother would use whenever he hinted at being frustrated at his pace of learning or inability to meet one of her exacting demands; changing the location.
He couldn't remember the term which she called it, but she made sure he wouldn't associate his frustration with his working area; Riku decided to do the same here. Hogwarts did not deserve to be associated with his lack of progress, nor did he wished to do so.
Yet he still counted the days until classes were in session.
Finding a good spot, Riku sat down; ignoring the pleasant breeze, the warm waning sun and the sounds of the forest. He took out his textbook, 'Magical Theory', his father's old transfiguration book, 'The beginner's guide', and the course outline for transfiguration. Glancing at the topics for this year, Riku decided to test his progress and memory.

Riku started to write.
He could remember the magical alphabet easily. While his mother had been the main driving force behind his educational experiences, he could still remember his father inferencing the differences between how magical children learnt the basics compared to muggles. Finding out A was for Alchemy and Z was for snoring, still tickled him.
Glancing at the outline, Riku then wrote about the definition of transfiguration, being careful to aid his own thoughts and words to the matter; regurgitation was not an education as his mother said.
Transfiguration is the branch of magic that changes an object from one form to another; living or nonliving, through the influence of magic on a molecular level.
That in and of itself would answer the question, but Riku continued.
Transfiguring has been mathematical formulated to be
't=(w*c) /(v"a) *Z'
Wherein 't' is the intended result, 'w' is the wand power being utilized by the individual, 'c' is the concentration of the individual; 'v' is how resistant the object is to being transformed, and 'a' is the weight/mass of the object.
Finally, 'Z' which is the unknown variable of the equation within transfiguration. While I am of no credibility or knowledgeable background, it is my belief that this variable is the user's 'intent'. This should not be confused with the variable 'c', consentration; for that is the individual’s ability to focus on the form and structural makeup of the desired transformation.
No, 'intent' would be the willingness or how much the individual will impose their will on the object to make it change. Intent, 'Z', works as a force multipler behind the spell work of transfiguration. Should the individual lack intent, while all other things remain equal, then the transfiguration maybe incomplete or not occur at all; likewise, with a strong desire for the change to occur, the object may be of the individual’s desired make up or have additional equalities which had not be presented at the time of 'c'.
Riku paused in what had quickly turned into an essay, instead of simple revision. He paused as he glanced up at the sky and frowned at the setting sun. He would lack a proper light to continue. He guessed it was all the more important for him to get started on Charms early tomorrow. It was more forgiving of mistakes than transfiguration was after all; a lighting spell would come in handy in these situations.
However, Riku stopped.
TIME. The was always so little time! Did he really need to wait any longer!?
He knew the theories. He knew the dangers. He knew the incantation; hell he knew the reversal for said incantation. All that was left was for him to just take the bloody leap!
Riku reached into the bag, and pulled out the matchstick he had brought. It had not been his intention...not consciously, but what was done was done.
Placing it on the ground, Riku pulled out his wand; the wood slightly unfamiliar within his hands, but held an eager impatience to it.
Riku calmed himself as he went over all the necessary steps. Imagining the how the thin wood would shift and form into a needle; its pointedness, rigged feel, and soft shiny when the sun would hit it.
Riku casted.
