Willow felt like for the most part, she was fitting in and adjusting just fine. Classes were going well, she was making friends, it felt easy to be part of her house. She was getting involved and really making the most of it. In reality she was just trying to stay busy to not think about how much she missed home. She was ultimately exhausted, every time her head hit the pillow she was knocked out. She felt overwhelmed, out of her depth, and ultimately disconnected.

Her family was a tight knit group. Her dad worked, but he was always home for dinner, holidays, and the weekend. Her mom was a stay-at-home mom, and often her Grandma would be over for dinner every night. She had never spent more than one night away from them. They spent most of their time outside when the weather was nice, laughing and playing and being a family. If there were struggles, her family didn't let her see them.

Most of all she missed being outside. Most days she was confined to the walls of the castle, with the occasional class outside but that wasn't enough for her. She found herself one Saturday, talking an early morning walk right after curfew lifted down to the Great Lake. She hadn't seen it since she first arrived to Hogwarts, and felt it might be a good area to reconnect and meditate. She threw on an oversized brown fuzzy sweater with bunny ears on top of the hood, some light blue jeans, and a pair of light pink boots since it had been quite chilly in the mornings as the sun rose.

Making her through the castle she noticed everyone was heading towards the Great Hall and at some point she had stopped seeing other students on her way down to the lake. As soon as she stepped outside she took a big deep breath of the crisp morning air, before bundling her arms close to her body and continuing down. This felt like exactly what she needed. As soon as she reached the first edge of the lake, she continued down its shore trying to get as far away from Hogwarts as she felt she was allowed to go. Once the castle was a decent ways away and she felt like she had found the right spot she plopped herself down on the grass. She wasn't quite on it's sandy shores since she wanted to make sure she wouldn't get caught in the tide.

There was a morning dew mist over the lake that brought a sense of calm to Willow, a sense of peace. Slowly tears started to fall down her face silently, as she let all the emotions she was keeping suppressed away slowly wash over her. She tried to keep it contained still, for fear that if she let it out too much it couldn't be locked away again. But it all got released with one sob. She couldn't help it. She was full on ugly crying, snot, tears, a blubbering gross mess as she let herself feel for the first time in a month. She quickly looked around to see if there was anyone around her that could see her and took a glance back at the castle which seemed so far away now.

She slowly stood up, faced the lake with determination, and just let out a scream.

Not one that sounded like she was being hurt or attacked, one that just let out every raw emotion that she had been feeling. Angry, homesick, lost, confused, sad, annoyed, you name it she was probably feeling it. After she finished screaming, she wiped her eyes though the tears were still coming and let out a small sigh of relief. It felt good.

Janet trudged along the grounds in her mud caked boots and relished in the fierce wind that whipped her hair across her face. She sighed, this was really lovely, she thought, just walking here alone and feeling the wind against my face and the mud squelching under my feet. Janet stopped by the great lake and sat by the waters edge looking into her reflection, she would have taken off her shoes and dipped them in the water like she did in the summer, she wasn't really that bothered by the cold but it was too much bother to undo her shoes. She felt so relaxed, she just wanted to lean her head back and have a little snooze....
suddenly she was woken up by something that made her heart stop for a second,
a scream
Janet gasped and sat bolt upright and due to her naturally brave instinct she started sprinting in the direction of the scream, being very athletic and extremely fast she covered the ground in mere seconds before she stopped suddenly.
There was a girl standing there.
She was just standing there screaming and for a split second Janet thought she was cursed. But then she realised that it wasn't a scream of fear or pain, it was a scream of sadness.
She should have realised it all along but her panic had been clouding her thoughts.
"Hello?" Janet asked (for once in her life) nervously -she didn't want to be interrupting someone like this but she wasn't the kind to just turn back, she was too curious. "What's going on?"

After she had finished screaming, her body collapsed in the grass. Her energy felt like it had been completely sapped out of her. She took a couple deep breaths feeling like she was breathing with the earth beneath her. Tears still silently falling down her face, like the silent waves on the lake. She felt like she could just take a nap on the ground, laying completely splayed out. She thought she might've heard someone coming towards her, but she didn't have the energy to even look over to see. If they wanted to approach her, that is when she would come up with the energy to move.

When the other person spoke, she lazily looked over then sat up. Her hair was a disgruntled mess, her clothes wrinkled and covered in dirt, sand, and grass. Her face was flushed, with the tear tracks evident on her skin. She didn't even reach up and wiped her eyes. "Hi there, I'm sorry if I worried you." She sighed looking into her lap, wondering if she should get up and introduce herself. She felt like it didn't matter at this point if she approached the other person. "I'm Willow. Do you want to sit and watch the water with me? There's probably a reason you're out here too right?" She mustered a small smile at the girl, gently tapping the dirt next to her.

Janet looked fearfully at the girl who had just collapsed onto the ground and was now crying silently. She was about to approach the obviously distressed girl when she sat up,
"Hi there, I'm sorry if I worried you." She said, "I'm Willow. Do you want to sit and watch the water with me? There's probably a reason you're out here too right?" She mustered a small smile at the Janet, gently tapping the dirt next to her.
Janet smiled back and sat down next to her feeling welcomed by her friendly smile,
"Hello! My name is Janet and whatever my feeble problems are they are obviously nothing compared to yours, are you okay?"
Normally Janet would talk much more than this and let out a constant flow of words that sometimes annoyed people, but right now she could see that Willow needed to let out her feelings more that Janet did, that is, if she even wanted to let out her feelings. Janet looked into the beautiful depths of the silently rippling water as she thought about what she could do to help Willow. Maybe she was homesick, she knew a few people who had never been away from their parents for more than a night before they came here and struggled with loneliness because of it, then again maybe it was just stress? There was quite a lot of homework being piled on top of them at this point and Janet knew she couldn't be the only one to feel its pressure and want to escape from the stress of it all for a minute.

She returned her gaze to the lake. It was calm, steady, the mist was slowly starting to dissipate as the the morning slowly faded. She felt bad that Janet was probably just taking a nice walk around the lake like she was doing initially and came across someone she might've thought was dying. "I think we're all having problems right now, with nothing to do with them." She pulled her knees up to her chest, and rested her head on top. "Hogwarts really doesn't do anything to check in with the first years. I mean, we have our prefects but they're always all over the place it's hard to pin them down. I just miss home. The breaks are never long enough, and Hogwarts is just so far from my home environment that it's not hard to miss it."

Almost everything was different from Hogwarts to her home, which made her feel extremely disconnected from a huge part of her. Her family and home life was everything to her, and extremely tied to her core. Hogwarts took a pair of scissors and cut that tie, or at least that's what it felt like. "I can only owl home so much, you know? And they only have so much time to owl back. They still get worried when owls barrel into our home." She let out a small laugh as she remembered reading the owl from her family about the weird way wizards deliver mail. They were just as perplexed as she was about all of this, and wished more than anything they could be here with her.

Yeah, Janet certainly agreed with all of that, Hogwarts was awesome and Janet really did love it, but it didn't really do anything about any of the homesick first years that were bound to come up in any boarding school. Normally Janet would have interrupted at this point but she kept to herself and carried in listening.
"I can only owl home so much, you know? And they only have so much time to owl back. They still get worried when owls barrel into our home.
Willow laughed and so did Janet, imagining for the first time just how strange it must be for non-magical families to receive post from owls.
"Yeah I can imagine how strange that must be! Don't worry Willow, I miss family too, but I just look forward to when I see them in the holidays even more! For me it just makes the time I spend with them even more special. I get homesick too but I always get something to distract myself with, sometimes it's normal things like books but mostly it's things like playing pranks (my greatest passion haha), and quidditch, what are your favourite things to do?"
Janet had left the castle expecting a just a plain, ordinary, boring walk, (and Janet was the type of person that preferred things that were more out of the ordinary) but she now found herself sitting on the edge of the lake comforting a potential friend who seemed nice and friendly, much more interesting.

Janet was definitely helping to clear the fog in her mind, it was nice to have someone to talk to about this. She didn't really know who to talk to about it because everyone seemed to be doing really well. They must all be really good at hiding it. "You make a good point, it does make seeing them a lot more exciting when we do get to go home. I'm actually on the quidditch team, so flying has become a really nice thing. I also really like looking at plants, spending time with them, which probably seems weird and boring, oh I also make friendship bracelets."

She dug around in her sweater pocket for some, she usually always kept some on her in case she made any friends. She pulled out the one she had, it was an ombre from pink to black, with purples and blues. It seemed more complicated than the average bracelet. "Um, usually I have some to choose from but if you want this one, you can have it. Or I can find you again with more options. I'm sorry that this is the only one I have." She offered it out to her with a small smile, "As a thank you, I suppose for helping me out. It's nice to have someone to talk to." I'm sure walking up to someone who was actively speaking wasn't that fun, but she did it anyway and Willow was truly grateful.

"Woah are you really on the quidditch team? That's so cool what position do you play?! I signed up a little late but hopefully I can be on the wait list for next time. Oh and you make friendship bracelets! That's awesome I used to do them all the time in my old school with my muggle friends!"
Willow started digging around in her pocket for something and then pulled out a beautiful friendship bracelet with pinks, blues and black. She offered it to Janet as a thank you and told her that if she didn't want this one she could find her later and get a different one.
"Oh thank you! Ooo I'll have this one please it's amazing! Woah that's sooo pretty you need to show me how to make ones like that!" She said with a grin on her face, "And no problem, it's nice to talk to new people every once and a while!"
She accepted the bracelet with a grateful smile and put it around her wrist.
"I can make bracelets too, just not quite as good as this one! I can make you one of you want, just give me some colours to work with!"

She beamed with pride at being on the quidditch team, even though she was kind of the back-up. "I'm the second-string keeper! It's very exciting, flying is really exhilirating. It helps make everything feel a little less overwhelming. Hopefully someday we can play against each other." She got a little bit shy when it came to Janet complimenting her bracelets, the complicated ones came out of boredom of the designs that she usually did so they just got more and more intense. Especially because she wanted every single one to be unique, unless someone requested matching ones with a friend of theirs. That was an exception.

She was startled that Janet wanted to make one for her, she hadn't gotten that offer before and it delighted her. "I would love to make some with you! I have so much yarn to choose from. I would be happy with any colors. Your favorite colors would be cool, so then I could always have a little piece of who you are in the bracelet." She slowly pushed up off the ground, figuring that they should head back to the castle before breakfast time. "Do you want to head back together?" She reached her hand out to Janet, offering to help her up.
