With a heavy sigh, Virgil sits down next to the Great Lake, tossing his things to his side, shoulders relaxing, finally not having to worry about getting lost in those big and confusing hallways and arriving late for a lesson.
There are many students outside — they all seemed to have the same idea. Some are sitting down with friends, playing card games, while others are working on homework but with simple smiles on their faces. Virgil sighs at the sight and looks towards the sky with an easy smile make its way on his face.
It's the perfect morning to relax, the boy notices, just like last week when he accidentally fell asleep and forgot to write back to his cousins. Virgil did, eventually, and got a letter back early this morning, during breakfast. But he didn't have the time to read it, as he found himself busy with lessons.
No more classes for the day, though, he thinks lazily, closing his eyes, enjoying the weak sun and the cold wind. He doesn't mind the lessons or the professors — almost all of them are very nice, though strict, and always find ways to make the lessons interesting and engaging, especially the Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts professors.
But his last lesson of the day was Transfiguration — with Gryffindors, he has to add! And his dislike for the subject has become more apparent as he finds himself daydreaming in class and dreading the next lesson. Not to mention the homework. Merlin, those are hard... He shivers remembering his last grade and how much time he spent on that.
So, of course, Virgil's glad that he can finally have some time for himself. He opens his bag and takes out Trent's letter he received while eating his omelet this morning. His cousin's fat and brown owl, Hooty, landed right on top of his food in the middle of his bite. Yeah. Great name, by the way, right? I guess being terrible at naming pets runs in the family...
The letter's long, which makes him surprised, as Trent's known for making up dumb excuses for not having to write so much, hence his terrible report card.
Virgil smiles to himself, as he quietly misses his older cousin and wonders how everything would have been much easier if only Trent had decided to attend Hogwarts instead of Durmstrang. They'd probably be sitting together right now, making jokes and talking about his favorite muggle bands. He'd be a Gryffindor for sure, Virgil plays with the idea, imagining the other walking with other lions, comparing Trent's behavior to his classmates'. Or a Hufflepuff!"Virge,
See, I told you if you just opened up a little you'd find other lonely people to talk to! Honestly, I feel like a proud dad. Now I know how Mum feels when she gets my report cards... I'm so funny. Who am I trying to fool? Even I am not proud of that monstrosity!
How about your report card, uh? Looking as terrible as mine or are you a Ravenclaw in disguise? Quite honestly, I was expecting you to be a Ravenclaw, being a bookworm and all that. My bets were 1) Ravenclaw; 2) Hufflepuff; 3) Gryffindor; 4) Slytherin. Guess father was right and you two are more alike than I thought.
But anyway, you've gotta tell me more than "they seem nice", though. I want details! Come on. Hogwarts house? How tall are they? Do they like The Runaways? Also, names, please. I have to know everything! How else am I going to make fun of you for having a girlfriend or boyfriend if I don't know anything about them? I have a role to play as your best cousin, you know!
So, update on the whole Sabrina thing: she finally let me copy her homework after I used my incredibly powerful persuasive skills... And by that, I mean I whined and annoyed her until she said yes. Works every single time! You've gotta start doing that.
And, Mum has finally decided to let Batsy stay in our place. Now that Sarah and I are gone, the poor thing has been very sad, and "he emotionally manipulated me into letting him in", her words, not mine. I think she's a soft spot for him now. Finally, I'll be able to say I have a dog!
Well, that's all for now. You better write to me a whole essay, because I want to know everything, alright?
Take care,
Trent Armitage."
He feels the growing loneliness inside his heart as his eyes are back to his cousin's handwriting. It hurts a little, as he knows the other's having a lot of fun with his wizard friends at Durmstrang, and here he is, all by himself, with no one else to talk to.
Sure, Virgil's been interacting with other people, but not enough to get a strong bond like that, which makes him bite his lower lip. The others, the one he's met here, would probably think he's weird if he tried to approach them all of the sudden and started some random conversation.
They probably had friends by now, too, like Adlai, she mentioned her friend a couple of times. People way more interesting than him — those aren't that hard to find, after all. And even if they didn't, why would they want to talk with him anyway, right? Virgil's just... Virgil. There's nothing that engaging about him.
Great. Now, I'm sad. Sighing, thanking his negative thinking for, once again, ruining the bit of happiness he was feeling just a few seconds ago, as he puts the letter down, staring at his fingers. I need to draw... Virgil tells himself, trying to ignore the overwhelming emptiness suddenly growing in him. He shakes his head and looks for a piece of parchment inside his bag.
He takes his quill and starts to make simple doodles, quick movements from his wrists with no actual idea in his head, simply trying to keep his mind at ease.

Isaac wasn’t exactly sure what to do with himself. He had spent the past hour and a half aimlessly walking around the school, memorizing hallways and classrooms in the events he was so hopelessly lost he could at least have something recognizable to latch onto and figure his way back.
But he’s bored. It becomes absolutely mind-numbing the longer he goes on, and he can feel his fingers itching for the lighter in his pocket. Some sort of distraction. So when he sees the Great Lake and all the students hanging out around it, he veers sharply off course and steps onto the grass.
Isaac feels only the slightest inclination to dive into the water with all his clothes still on, and just swim to the other side without stopping. He wonders how far he can push himself. However, he just shakes his head and continues on his way.
He spots a Slytherin near the Great Lake, and to his surprise, it’s Virgil from his previous study session a while ago.
Oh. That’s exciting. He smiles.
Isaac proceeds to slip off his shoes, setting them to the side before stripping off his socks and bundling them tight. He picks up the shoes (socks stuffed in them) by two fingers, and makes his way to the fellow Slytherin.
“Hey.” Isaac sits down heavily beside Virgil, setting down his shoes to the left. “Fancy seeing you here, huh?”
Isaac reaches deep into his pocket, grabbing onto his lighter with an almost crushing weight and taking it out before pulling his knees to his chest, resting his arms over them.
“There’s not really much to do here, y’know?” Isaac has the lighter dangerously close to his face, but he flicks it on anyways, the scrape of it jarring yet familiar. He watches the flame spin before letting the lighter snap shut, and repeating the process. Tiny bursts of heat.
“I just spent some time walking around the school. But I've been thinking that it’s not much fun when you’re stuck in one place weeks at a time. Months.” Isaac blows out the little flame he’s produced. If he’s being honest, not all of the time he spent wandering was on memorization. He’d thought long and hard about how he’d fare stuck in this castle. Being stuck in one place for so long wasn’t his definition of fun.
“I’m not sure if it’s just me who’s feeling like that.”

Virgil's soul almost jumps out of his body when Isaac Dou sits down heavily right next to him. He feels his heart beating quickly, and his entire body freezes, eyes wide glued to the other's face, trying to process what he's saying as Isaac plays with a lighter so close to his face.
"H-Hi Isaac. You... You almost gave me a heart attack." Virgil says jokingly, voice shaking, running his fingers through his dark hair. A tiny voice in his head hopes that he looks decent this time around, unlike the first time he met Isaac. Quickly, he tries to hide his drawing, avoiding staring at the other Slytherin's face, cheeks starting to burn, "A-And, answering you, I-I guess I like having a routine, so I don't mind doing the same things that much..."
He shakes his shoulder, in a dismissive manner, realizing how boring that made him sound. Virgil bites his lower lip, shoving his parchments inside his bag. His eyes run to Isaac's posture once more, watching him as he blows out the fire from the lighter in his hand. Part of Virgil wants to tell him that's dangerous, but the other part yells at him that he's super lame, so he just plays with his fingers, awkwardly, hoping Isaac doesn't think he's as stupid as he feels.
"But there's always something new at Hogwarts," He adds shrugging, still looking down. "From what I've heard, there are secret passages to explore, so, uh, you can always try to find them if you want to have some fun."

"A-And, answering you, I-I guess I like having a routine, so I don't mind doing the same things that much..."
Isaac understands that. Really, he does, but he wasn’t like Virgil. No offense to the kid, but he seemed complacent. Like his anxiety and second-guessing himself made him slow to act. Isaac liked him, but he would never be like him, and Virgil would never be like Isaac.
“I mean,” Isaac thinks out loud and turns to Virgil. “Routine is good. It’s healthy. But I wish I could just get out the gates here.” He frowns. “I don’t like being stuck.”
"But there's always something new at Hogwarts. From what I've heard, there are secret passages to explore, so, uh, you can always try to find them if you want to have some fun."
Isaac had heard about the secret passages, but he assumed a lot of them must be closed by now. What with the war that went on years ago and how damaged Hogwarts was after. But if any were open, he’d like to find them.
“The secret passages seem like they’d be fun,” Isaac agrees.
Something near Virgil catches his attention, and he points dangerously with his lighter still on. “Is that your art?” A piece of parchment pokes from Virgils bag, looking like it had been hurriedly stuffed in before he had come.

[quote]"A-Ah, yeah. I draw— sorta," Virgil answer, taking out the parchment coming out of his bag. He looks at it, realizing how bad the drawing looked. Isaac's question had taken him off guard, as he thought he'd been extra careful with hiding his drawings. There's nothing impressive about them, after all, so he kept them close to his heart, never feeling the need to show anyone; not even his family. "It's not that good."
He shrugs, handing it to the Slytherin next to him, staring at the other. Isaac's so much cooler than him, he thinks lamely. Not only is he half-vampire, but he seems determined and rather adventurous, two things he'll never be. Raised by a Healer, safety's always the first thing that comes to Virgil's mind in every situation — Blair made sure her son was too paranoid about getting hurt!
She was always there to protect him, and when she wasn't, Blair knew her paranoid child would never do anything that could end up injuring him. So, when Virgil mentioned the secret passages, it's not because he's interested — though, he is a little bit curious —, but rather because he's scared to death. The idea of being stuck in one of them, unable to escape and making Slytherin lose some house points if a Perfect finds him constantly played on his mind when he even considered exploring Hogwarts by himself.
He wants to, though! Not by himself, obviously, but with someone else. Exploring sounded fun, and he grew up with a rather mischief cousin which lead to him being a little into some good adrenaline pumping in his veins. And, sure, he could get seriously hurt and end up in the Hospital Wing, but, as Trent says, isn't that part of the fun as well? So, feeling a bit adventurous, Virgil asks, "W-Would you like to explore with me some other time? We could find some secret passages that are still open."

Isaac’s eyebrows raise. “You want to explore the passages with me?” Who wants to be willingly left alone with a Dhampir in secret passages?
“Are you actually sure about that? And I don’t mean that as a jab at you,” he quickly adds, imagining how that would sound to Virgil. “I mean you want to be left alone with me?
Isaac had liked the drawing but all his attention snapped to those few words, and he wasn’t sure what to think of them. It wasn’t as if he didn’t trust himself not to bite Virgil, he was completely confident in his ability to control himself. It’s just that Virgil didn’t know that. And still, he wants to explore possibly the most remote parts of Hogwarts with him. He admits, it does make him a little happy.
He snaps the lighter off and sticks it back into his pocket, a small smile playing on his lips. “If you’re up to it, I’m all in.” And Isaac means it. He’d never met someone so quick to trust him to be alone with them in his whole life. He wasn’t going to give that up.
Maybe he had been a wrong about Virgil. Just a little. He thinks that if this walking, talking, anxiety ridden boy could be brave enough to be alone with him, then he was one of the bravest people he had ever met.

[quote]At the sound of Isaac's words, Virgil frowns a little, then he remembers how the wizarding world treats people like the Slytherin sitting next to him. With that, he realizes how surprised Isaac must be with his suggestion, as most wizards would hesitate to be left alone with a Dhampir, especially in quiet, hidden places such as Hogwarts' secret passages. But that's partially due to the fact they already have instilled in their heads that Dhampirs are going to harm them, which isn't true at all.
Being raised by a Dragonologist, Virgil learned that the ones that are called dangerous are often the most misunderstood. Just like dragons, creatures that are lead to cause harm due to hardships they have to endure — dragons are tortured, imprisoned, and when they fight back, they're seen as the bad guys. Perhaps, Isaac is just like that, someone that is painted to be evil, no matter what he does. Quite honestly, just that thought is enough to make Virgil frustrated and sad.
Knowing his mother, if she was to see him right now, offering to adventure the castle with a Dhampir, she'd probably tell him that he's being impulsive and silly, that he wasn't thinking this through, that he could get seriously hurt, but, honestly, Virgil doesn't think Isaac could be dangerous.
Yes, the other's obviously stronger and faster than him, but he doubts Isaac would lose control and actually attack him, so he shakes his head, dismissing his housemates worried, and a little bit shocked, question, by saying, with a high-pitched tone, "Yeah!"

Virgil sounds so sure in his reply that Isaac can’t help but smile wider. “Yeah,” he says. “Let’s do it sometime.”
Isaac hasn’t felt this happy in a long time. It’s been so hard to find acceptance in a world that seemed against him. He guessed that Hogwarts was the one place he could be himself. It wasn’t like he could be the only half-breed at the school. Ever since that one werewolf teacher from his mom’s time, people must have become more accepting. And roaming around the school with a friend sounded a lot better than just walking around by himself. That is, if Virgil even considered him a friend. Isaac would be happy if he did.
“But I forgot to say, I really like your drawing.” Isaac used to draw a lot as a kid, but he stopped drawing so much a few years ago. He turned his focus towards reading and writing and just lost his passion for art. But it wasn't like he was sad about it. If he’s being honest, he felt more passionate about writing then he ever did about art. Besides, Virgil’s drawing was way better than anything he’d ever drawn.
“How long have you been drawing for?”

[quote]"Oh, t-thank you!" Virgil lets out, surprised that his drawing skills are now the topic of conversation. His eyes are drawn back to his bag, in which he stares deeply, thinking of Isaac's question. To be honest, art's been in his since always. Since he could walk and talk, he'd draw in the walls and babble along to songs. "Hm, ever since I can remember, I think. Mum says I've always had a thing for art... Drawing, music, writing. Anything."
Although most Dragonologists aren't the first type of people that someone thinks of with mention of music, Virgil can only remember the way his father would play the piano, delicate and passionate, fingers navigating easily against the keys, softly humming as his mother and he danced along. Mihyung promised he'd teach him how to play when he was old enough, but the divorce happened, and his father had to break his promise.
"Especially music, though," He adds, softly, images of the grand black piano in his living room, standing now alone and untouched, probably covered in dust, waiting for the day Mihyung would come back and play their favorite songs in his mind. Maybe, during winter break, if his father doesn't have to leave to take care of his dragons, perhaps he could ask him to teach him.
As a child, he used to run around the house, holding his brush, singing at the top of his lungs, after putting his hair in weird hairstyles, stealing his mother's jackets and eyeshadow, dressed up like a true rockstar. The idea never left his mind, even after almost eight years; finding friends, creating a band. He even had names for it, and silly songs that he wrote (they were terrible, but it's a lot of fun to read them after a long time).
"Come to think of it, I'd like to be a musician," He laughs it off, jokingly shrugging, though Virgil means it. Something in his heart just comes back to music, no matter what. Whenever he's feeling sad, or nervous, music is always there for him. "If I were any good. What about you? Do you like drawing or something like that?"

“Actually, I’m more into writing.” When Isaac had lived in his house, he rarely went out. So he kept himself busy by throwing himself into books and, in turn, started writing them. He knew he wasn’t the best, he was only eleven, but it’s not like he let that stop him.
“I used to really like art, but my attention sort of diverted away from it once it got too expensive,” Isaac explained. “But I love music! I actually play guitar and I sing a little. That doesn’t actually mean I’m great though.” Isaac laughed. He completely understood Virgil’s love for music. It was the one thing that had been a constant in his life.
Before any of his newer interests, music was always the one thing that kept him together. He’d shove earbuds into his ears when his extended family used to come over, just to drown out their loud voices and judging eyes. He loved music more than anything (though writing was a close rival) but had no idea how to listen to it in Hogwarts. Phones and iPods freaked when ever they got to close to magic. Really, he’d love seeing a band live some time soon.
