The most beautiful woman in the area (though there was no one else near her) waited impatiently for the newest batch of Hogwarts students to arrive by train. Olphie was very eager for the new year to start. Last year, she had been new, and though she had had quite a momentous couple months being the best Flying Professor that Hogwarts had ever seen, that sense of newness always brought people to think that they could take advantage of her. Now, this year, she would settle into routine and continue to be the beautiful Olphie Bercegeay, who was so kind to retire from being a star Quidditch player to teach small, unknowledgeable children.

Olphie practiced her most genial smile as she tapped her foot anxiously. How many of them would bombard her as soon as they got off the train, asking for an autograph? It had been a quiet summer, with only a select amount of students remaining at Hogwarts for summer camp, and she had enjoyed the peace and quiet of the castle, spending many nights listening to the lap of these very lake's waves, a sound which could only be truly appreciated in silence. While many professors had gone and visited family and friends, Olphie had chosen to embrace a peace that she hadn't had in years. Being famous was hard.

The new students were probably just as anxious as she, though Olphie knew it was likely her presence that would make them feel such intense nerves. It was probably the first time these students would be in the presence of such a celebrity; if she was a small child and meeting such a star, she'd be peeing her pants with such excitement! They might have a bit of nerves about school, as well, but they would be alright. School wasn't that important.

Why was she here, though? Well, the answer was obvious. Olphie had obviously made such a wonderful impression last year that the Headmaster had asked her to guide the students across the lake for their first viewing of Hogwarts Castle. Okay...that might have been a bit of a lie; she volunteered, but he and the other Heads of Houses probably wouldn't have said yes if she wasn't fabulous, right? They had trusted her to lead the way, and keep those two hotties who had volunteered with her in line. She knew she was hot, but they would have to wait for a smooch; there were first years to guide!

Looking behind her, Olphie wondered where those two men were. Artsandcrafts and Alrockhardabs were cuties, but they did have a flaw of not being punctual to the important events, like she was. Oh well, this was what she was here for, right? To teach them how to be better. To show them what a good role model could be to these first years.

The lamp she held did not penetrate the darkness very well, but Olphie wondered if she had seen a flicker of movement. She certainly hoped so; it was nearly time for the train to arrive.

Alaric was not exactly sure why it was a good idea for a Dhampir to welcome the first-year students into Hogwarts. Would they not already be intimidated by being here in the first place? Now let’s add the uncomfortable aspect that being in the presence of a Dhampir brings even when he wasn’t trying. He would pull out his copper pocket-watch that was nestled inside of his dark, navy blue vest. He was not more than a minute late and he had a feeling the flying professor had been quite early. “Ms. Bercegeay.” His warm, velvety voice greeted her as he approached. He had not officially met her, but he did know she was the only female professor that was joining them tonight. Mr. Vernatis was not someone he had specifically met, yet, the last name seemed to ring a bell from his school years. The rest of his outfit consisted of matching slacks, black shoes, and an off-white, button-up shirt under his vest. In his other hand, he carried his wand with a small light at the tip.

He knew Ms. Bercegeay was a retired quidditch player but he couldn’t say that he had seen any of the games or even knew which team she had played for. He had heard a few rumors in passing, but he didn’t judge people on other’s impressions. He couldn’t say that he knew anything about Mr. Vernatis except that he was the charms professor here. After he had graduated from Hogwarts, he had gone back to America to take care of the woman who had taken care of him his whole life. He had only arrived back in Scotland just two days ago and he was still trying to wrap his head around being a professor here. If Olphie decided to make eye contact with him she would be met in return by his dark, vermillion eyes and a warm, but hesitant smile.

It is not that he didn’t want to be here helping he was just concerned by the reaction of the children. The chugging of the train would start to reach their ears it was not yet here, but it was quite close. “My deepest apologies for not being on time. I find that relearning the castle has taken me longer than originally anticipated.” It was true, being here was so surreal that he was still trying to get used to both the good and the bad nostalgia that it had brought back for him. On top of that, he did find himself turned around on the occasion that he had left the tower to take a break from unpacking, decorating, and the exhausting spell casting. He just was not as adept at casting as most others were so it took him more energy to cast complicated spells like the ones that made some of his walls invisible.

Artemis yawned as he walked down the path toward the train station in Hogsmeade. He didn’t know why he volunteered to escort the first years onto their boats and to the castle. He hadn’t had a ride in the first-year boats since he was a child himself and he had to take the boat with his younger sister. He only volunteered to do this because the Hufflepuff Head of House practically begged him to do it. To get the man off his case, he agreed to escort the students, but he didn’t expect to have company. Alaric Equinox, Artemis didn’t mind so much. The man was new and Artemis didn’t know him really. The name was vaguely familiar though...he wasn’t in his graduating year though. Maybe he was in his sister’s classes? He’d have to ask her later. But no, his ire for this assignment wasn’t toward the new teacher.

Artemis sighed as he walked up toward the pair standing before him and gave Olphie Bercegeay an unamused expression. “Bercegeay. Didn’t expect to see you out here tonight,” he commented. Of course he knew that she would be there, but he wasn’t exactly fond of the woman who refused to get anyone’s name right and was so self absorbed. It was also quite annoying how much she clung onto Caradoc when the man clearly didn’t share her one sided devotion.

Looking to the new teacher, Artemis inclined his head in greeting. “Artemis Vernatis. I’m going to assume that you are Alaric Equinox, the new Astronomy teacher? Let’s hope that you’re a bit more social than Barclay was. Nice fellow, but incredibly shy.”

Turning toward the direction that the train would be arriving from, Artemis could see a few puffs of smoke in the distance, signaling the incoming train. A conversation would ensue between the three teachers, but Artemis wouldn’t participate as eagerly as the other two. His thoughts were on the train and how nervous most of the students would be. He could remember his time on the train...the lonely rides until some of the more annoying forced friends decided to pop in and sit with him, disturbing his quiet time. He was usually a loner, but the few friends he did make he attempted to keep in contact with...except for Caradoc. But that was a story for another time. Artemis looked up at the darkening sky, searching for the first signs of distant planets that would twinkle in the atmosphere. He wondered if this was the time of year to see Sagittarius. Artemis and his sister would always star gaze to see where in the sky the constellations they were named after would appear. Maybe that would be something this new teacher would show the new students this year.

The train’s whistle sounded and Artemis lowered his head in that direction. It would be time soon. The Hogwarts Express was always punctual...unless there was an issue along the way. Thankfully there hadn’t been an incident that would stop the train since nineteen ninety-seven. Artemis closed his eyes at the memory of that particular train ride, thankful that neither he nor his sister were hurt during that trip. As the train pulled up in front of the three teachers, Artemis would greet the older students with a nod of his head or a pat on the shoulder before telling them to head over to the carriages. As the smallest group of students started to clamber off the train, Artemis would be the first teacher to break away and move toward the group.

“First years this way!”

The three teachers waited for the -very large- group to form in front of them before turning and leading them down toward the lake. The darkness loomed and swallowed all of them. The only light shining would come from the lantern that Olphie floated in front of her and the two lit wands of the men, Alaric in front of the woman and Artemis bringing up the rear of the group. The short walk to the lake took the group through a copse of trees, each seemingly leaning over the students almost as if they were trying to see or gain an idea of who the new students are. Artemis would notice a few students leaning away and huddling close to their friends as they walked but it only caused Artemis to usher them along and keep up with the others.

Once they all reached the lake, Artemis heard a few gasps before he heard one of the teachers up front call out, “Four to a boat! Three boats will have three students only as a teacher needs to be in there as well!” The lake was quite dark and looked intimidating. A large expanse of water on all sides and the castle wasn’t even in sight from where they stood. He could only imagine the wild images that would pop up into the heads of these eleven-year-olds.

“Four to a boat. Come now, don’t dally,” the Charms professor would say to the stalling students in front of him.

Santario had been at summer camp but had gotten an owl from her father asking her to come back home for the last week before school started. He had finished the deadline for his publisher, and he wanted to spend some extra time with her before she was gone for the majority of the year. So now she was back, and she had an interesting ride in with a second-year Slytherin. She had put the gift that her father had sent with her in her trunk having not even opened yet. She would step off the train her sharp sapphire eyes taking everything in as she heard a voice calling out for first years.

She would make her way over towards the voice and see a man she did not meet over the summer talking. Then there was a female voice one Santario recognized almost immediately and it made her cringe slightly. She remembered the bombardment of pink that was the woman’s event over the summer. Something San had come to realize was actually just a front to make it all about herself. ‘Hm… No, let’s not get in a boat with her.’ She thought as her eyes landed on the… ‘Holy crap! What is he?!’ From his milky white skin that put her porcelain fine skin to shame to those deep, red eyes. She had read about muggle vampires but she had no idea about wizarding Vampires or Dhampirs. She looked over at the first professor who had spoken, a blonde girl asking him if she could be in his boat. She decided to make her way over to both of them. “I’ll volunteer for your boat as well, sir.” She spoke with a formal tone her silvery voice holding an intensity that seemed to carry over the din to its intended listener.

When the train whistle blew, Janus immediately got up to join the stream of students getting off the train. He knew nothing about Hogwarts and he didn't want to get lost. Being somewhere so unfamiliar had chipped away at his usual calm, and having bought his textbooks just that morning he'd thought it was too late to fill his huge knowledge gap during the train ride.

He left his trunk on the train as he'd been told to and stepped carefully onto the platform, squinting at the other children in the evening shadow. Just then, a clear voice ringed over their heads.
"First years this way!"
When they all turned their heads, Janus made out three adults waiting for them a few steps ahead. Professors, probably. As he walked towards them he started to notice their glaring non-muggleness, a natural reflex that his short trip to Diagon Alley hadn't completely tampered.
The man who had spoken wore long wizard robes and was pointing a lit wand at them, his green eyes scanning the crowd. He also had a patient smile and smooth hair, and Janus decided that he looked the most reassuring of the three.
Not that it had been a difficult decision; the witch who was holding the lantern was dressed in bright coloured clothes that looked decidedly out of place, and her face was stretching in a smile that was way too wide.

As for the other professor, Janus didn't understand why some of his schoolmates seemed to stay away from him until he got closer. He was dressed like someone from an old film, he thought, and he looked quite elegant. The thing was, even in the light of the wands and lantern, his skin didn't seem to pick up some colour. He was the palest person he'd ever seen, and it briefly reminded him of how his own skin had looked underwater at the seaside. All his thoughts however dwindled in shock when he raised his head and met the professor's deep red eyes. A sliver of primal fear gripped the back of his head as he quickly lowered his eyes and tried to control his breathing. A vampire, that's what the wizard reminded him of with his elegant vest, dark hair and bloody eyes. He was sure they wouldn't have hired a vampire to teach children though. Right?
He tried to calm himself; the man was a professor for a reason, and the wizarding world was much more diverse and strange than what he was used to. There was no real danger, he'd just have to trust his new caretakers and his luck.

He'd just managed to regain his cool when the last first year was rounded up and the profs started leading them towards the trees. The vampire lookalike stayed ahead of the group the whole time, maybe because he knew he made the students nervous. Janus, for his part, tried to walk in the centre, away from the grasping dark branches.

When the woods cleared out to reveal the lake, he couldn't help but cast a worried glance at the darkly sloshing waters. His father had told him next to nothing about the magical world, but he did tell him that Hogwarts was a castle. Janus couldn't see any castle from where they were standing though. To get there they'd probably have to cross the black expanse of the lake, and right on cue Janus noticed the little boats waiting by the shore. The professors then began to give instructions to board the boats. If they'd have to row all through the lake, Janus wanted to be with an adult. Well, they would probably move the boat by magic, but still he didn't feel safe crossing those dark waters alone with other 11 year olds.

He saw a blond girl and then another one approach the reassuring professor, and he didn't feel like facing the competition for the last spot left. The colourful witch could probably fill him up on a lot of the things he didn't know about Hogwarts, but juding by her expression she looked too eager to do so and reminded him of intrusive shop assistants.
The maybe-vampire wizard was the one he'd been walking towards, and the one he actually wanted to get to know. He'd have been lying if he'd said that he wasn't a little scared, but he'd already concluded on his own that he couldn't (probably?) be an actual vampire and apart from the eyes he didn't look threatening. Plus, if anything nasty emerged from the lake that professor could surely hold his own.

He gathered some courage and got closer to the vest-wearing wizard, then pointed at the boat behind him.
"Can I... ?" he stammered.
He hoped the man had understood him anyway.

The train ride had been short for Ruthie as she had gotten on in Scotland, and it had been uneventful too, just meeting a handful of people. But the people you meet first are hardly ever the people you become true friends, and so the young blonde was eager to see what else this legendary magical school might have to offer.

Swiftly, Ruthie stepped off the train and onto the platform. She looked around once or twice to try and get her bearings while students rushed by her on either side. Soon, she heard a male voice call out for the first years and Ruthie followed to join the crowd that had accumulated in front of not one, but three professors. The Scottish girl stood up on her toes to catch a glimmer of these adults—her future professors, perhaps?—but couldn’t garner a good enough view. Instead, she followed the group as they traversed the grounds by lantern out to the lake.

There, the students were informed that it would be four people to a boat, except where a teacher was present. As the crowd began to part, Ruthie could finally see the boats, small and wooden. Four seemed more than enough for a single boat. Soon the students started to find themselves each a boat. As this process moved along, Ruthie spied two young girls go up to a male professor, the one who didn’t have a decidedly pale skin coloring, and ask to be in their boat. This planted the idea in the girl’s head that riding with a staff member might not be such a bad idea. They had to be vaguely friendly.

As such, Ruthie squinted trying to find them. The men looked just like any other adult male, but the woman seemed familiar. Wait, it couldn’t be. Ruthie recalled the matches her parents took her too, and the cards she used to collect. It was dark and she could easily be making a mistake, contorting faces to fit her memory. Still, the first year was presumptuous and held out some hope that her supposition might be true so she stepped forward towards the woman.

“Are you taking students in your boat?” she asked as she flicked a stray hair back behind her ear. Getting in the boat seemed like a solid first goal, then she could confirm her suspicions. Keeping her lips taught, she tried to smile, but she imagined it came out slightly awkward, which was only natural in the face of someone who spent time on the Holyhead Harpies. It wasn’t Ruthie’s favorite team, but it was solid, something worth bragging about for sure. What a way, if it were true, to start her Hogwarts journey.

Piérre quickly disembarked the train, leaping from the stairs, trunk in hand, to the ground, without caring to step down. His momentum caused him to almost fall face first on the grass, but he caught himself just in time and balanced himself with circling arms.

He grinned, looking back toward the train. The older alumni were heading off towards some brush, and their forms were easily lost in the foggy mist created by the cooling Hogwarts Express. Seconds later, carriages pulled by nothing continued down the path towards the great black castle looming overhead. The moon was thin and sickly, a scythe cutting through the wispy mists of clouds just barely beginning to form. The castle looked like something Piérre would have seen in an old fashioned Muggle horror movie, something like he and his parents would watch on Halloween.

Piérre’s face fell slightly at the thought before a light tap on his shoulder distracted him. Romeo was behind him, equipped with his own bulging trunk, pointing towards the lake. ”Piérre, look!”

Piérre looked to where his twin pointed, observing the glassy black lake which rippled quietly against the shoreline. Upon its gently bobbing tides were countless long boats, which resembled gondolas. Piérre’s eyes widened as he beheld the awesome sight. It was just like Venice!

”Cool.” Piérre whispered excitedly. ”Cool! Hey Romeo, you wanna ride in one with me? Teachers said four to a boat!”

Piérre watched as Romeo shifted his weight form foot to foot, his eyes flicking across all of the gathered first years as he hefted the trunk into a more desirable position. ”A-Actually... I kind of want to go and meet people on my own.” Romeo smiled carefully, stammering a touch. ”Why don’t you do the same? Maybe you could talk to one of the professors. He looks pretty nice.” Romeo nodded towards a teacher with fair blonde hair and a gentle smile. He was talking to a small, also blonde, girl.

Piérre frowned. Romeo hardly ever wanted to do his own thing, and sometimes Piérre found it difficult to let him go off on his own. ”But- But what if you get beaten up?” Piérre asked, looking for any reason to convince Romeo to stay. ”I should stick with you to watch your back!”

Romeo laughed quickly. ”I’ll be okay, gemello mio. You have fun. Go meet new people! Enjoy yourself, and don’t get in trouble.” Romeo raised his eyebrows at Piérre before spinning away and joining in with a crowd of other confused, excited and slightly scared first years.

Piérre looked after Romeo longingly, almost extending a hand to stop his twin, but decided against it, setting his jaw and raising his chin as he turned back to the boats and the professors. It looked as if most of the children were flocking to the professor with the blonde hair and green eyes, for now he saw a girl with prim black hair gesturing to the boat that the blonde girl now sat in. Even the professor that had her arms crossed with a confident, smug smile had a blonde girl chatting with her. The only one who seemed to not have a single individual with him yet was a tall, pale, professor with faintly glowing vermillion eyes. He stood rather stiffly in a formal posture, and was not casual, unlike the other professors.

Piérre’s blood ran cold as he remembered the bully boy he had first interacted with on the train. A boy with corpselike skin tone, glowing, malicious scarlet eyes, and a mouth, which when open, exposed a gap between incisor and molar to allow fangs to peek out through.

This professor was a Dhampire, he simply had to be, what with his nearly translucent skin and abnormal red eyes. Piérre, even though he could not see in the professor’s mouth, was half willing to bet that there was a gap there meant to hide the sharpened vampire fangs. Piérre remembered hearing stories about Dhampires from Maddie whenever he got on her nerves. She said that they were half human, half vampire, and that if Piérre didn’t follow Maddie’s instructions to get in bed, shut up, and get some shut eye, she would lure one into his room to bite him. Between the memory and Piérre’s realization, it took all of Piérre’s willpower not to immediately shiver.

But then he looked at the empty gondola behind the professor and Piérre felt a pang of guilt at his cowardice. Surely the professor was nothing like the Slytherin Dhampire boy Piérre had had the run in with, or even the scary boogie man tales that had been told him to make him get to bed at a reasonable time. Besides, it was always best not to judge a book by its cover, and Piérre wanted to make good impressions before he started to cause trouble. Now was as good as ever to try.

Forcing his hands not to shake, Piérre picked up his molskine trunk and made his way towards the darkly dressed professor, admiring how much he really looked like his vampire heritage in his Victorianesque attire. Another boy with near black hair was standing nearby, but judging by his posture, Piérre was willing to bet that he wasn’t entirely thrilled that he was there with the Dhampire. Despite himself Piérre smiled. Man, Piérre wished he could cut a look half as well as this professor did in his midnight blue vest and formal black slacks.

”Um, hi!” Piérre said, smiling carefully up at the pale professor and trying to force his voice not to immediately start shaking. ”I know not many people came to you yet, so...” Piérre ignored the sinking feeling in his stomach, replacing it instead with the possibility of getting to know such a cool individual as the professor made himself to be. As of now, the professor neither made a move to invite or push away, so Piérre soldiered on, never letting his stride falter. ”My name is Piérre. Maddie always tells me to be formal when talking to adults, so it’s really nice to meet you. I really like your outfit. Are you gonna navigate a gondola across? If so, could I join?”

Piérre held out a hand to shake, just like Mathilda had taught him whenever he was to interact with other adults or her coworkers. Remembering the boy next to him, Piérre turned and nodded to him as well, smiling in a way that made his bright green eyes sparkle brighter than before. ”It’s nice to make your acquaintance too! Can’t wait for the Sorting, can you?”

Logan nervously stepped along with the rest of the students. She made sure to keep herself at the back of the group, away for the large clump in front of her. She wasn't quite sure about being here, but she was sure that this was going to be an interesting year. She was most excited for astronomy, the science her mother had wanted to study before she passed. Logan stumbled a little over her robes before straightening herself and following along after the other students.

"Just think of home," she muttered to herself, brushing her chocolate hair behind her ear. She quickly moved herself forwards to catch up with the students in front of her. She made sure to keep all of her stuff close while still keeping her hands tucked into her robe.

"Just keep going forwards, always forwards," she told herself quietly. She didn't bother looking to see who the professors were that were helping the students get to the castle. Her aunt had told her about the boats and the ride to Hogwarts but she hadn't thought it would be like this.

Logan's nervousness only increased as she neared the boats. Only a few more steps and she would be at her new home until Christmas. Her aunt would have to take care of the twins by herself and Logan would no longer be able to play sports with the two young boys.

Willow had been a bundle of energy the whole day starting with running through a train platform? Who could say they did that among her friends? She did chat with those in her cabin, most of the time though her eyes were wide, glued to the window watching the scenery go by. As the evening came she found herself being tired, but couldn't allow herself to close her eyes for more than a second.

As the train began to slow, she stood up from her seat and pressed herself against the window trying to take it all in. A tad disappointed when they pulled up on a bunch of trees, soon all the students began to disembark. As she watched the crowd outside, she felt herself unable to move out of the cabin questioning if this was the right place for her to be. She knew nothing about magic, and so far she didn't see how this place was such a big deal.

Soon she snapped out of it, as one of her cabin mates tugged on her black robe to come outside with them. She took a deep breath as she stepped out of the train and started to follow the crowd of what she believed to be first years. She joined the crowd that surrounded the Professors and quickly lost her cabin mates, and anyone she met on the way here as she melded into the middle of the group. She pushed her way to the front of the group as they got to the lake and saw the large expanse of boats. "Is this... is this it?" She inquired, to no one around her in particular. "I thought it was this huge castle, this is just a lake. When do we get to go to the school?" She was impatient, which was abnormal for her, there was so much pent up energy from when she first got her letter but so far it seemed all for nothing.

Alaric had led the way through the copse of trees to the boats, once there Ms. Bercegeay called out four to a boat. He noted some of the kids immediately formed into groups probably with the people that they had shared their cabin with on the train, it was always easier that way. Others seemed to walk the path without speaking to anyone else on their way up to the front. “Come, come now we have quite a large amount of you to get over the lake. So in an orderly fashion if you would.” His voice a warm velvet more comforting that when he had spoken for the first time that night he was, after all, speaking to children. A few would still shy away from him but most it seemed would get over that as he gently helped them cling inside of the boats.

He offered the students a closemouthed reassuring smile. “Do not worry you won’t have to row the bows yourselves they are enchanted as are many things here at Hogwarts. Just try to relax and enjoy the view once we get started.” He said to a group of 4 students that he had just finished securing in a boat. It was then that he realized he was being directly approached by a young brunette boy with glasses. He stammered an unfinished short question but pointed at the empty boat that would be Alaric’s once they started off across the lake. He would offer the boy a warm smile and nod. “Of course you may young man. Allow me to help you in.” He would offer his hand to the young boy and help him into the boat if the boy allowed him too.

The next boy who approached him was able to finish his sentences but Alaric could still tell the apprehension was there. “Good evening Piérre and thank you. A certain formality is always good when you first meet someone but after a while even with adults as long as you show respect a more casual conversation is not a bad thing.” The young boy known as Piérre asked about the boat behind him and Alaric nodded. “Of course you may ride along with me allow me to help you in.” If allowed he would also help Pierre into the boat. After making sure the two boys were settled he would continue to help other students into the boats as they approached the shoreline.
