A Stone May Skip A Long Way PV Delilah Closed

A certain young, blonde Ravenclaw girl spent the vast majority of her time away from her house tower, despite the fact that it was largely considered to hold the very best views of highlands in the entire castle. But that was the thing: Ruthie was not contented to just stop and look. She had to go an explore--to touch and feel her surroundings. Recently, she had been craving the outdoors. At home in Arisiag, nature was her playground, the ocean specifically. So, it was no surprise that her favorite place had become the Black Lake. Large, long and imposing, the lake seemed to stretch on and on, well beyond what her natural eye could see. She considered how deep it might be and what secrets it might hold--she'd heard the Slytherins whisper about a giant squid, but had yet to prove this to be true.

It was mid-morning when she'd had a break in her classes and decided to venture down to shoreline. Upon arrival, she immediately dropped her satchel to the ground and unclipped her robes, leaving a not-exactly-neat pile on top of some nearby rocks. As she stepped closer, she felt an urge to swim, but knew that the water would be too cold. Instead, she removed her shoes and socks, leaving them too by the cloak and bag.

From there, she walked along the rocks, a combination of smooth and the occasional rough stone, along the waters edge. With the wind on the water, the waves lapped at her toes, but the eleven year old didn't flinch. She was accustomed to these temperatures. In fact, the waves, though short and small, reminded her of the quaint fishing village she had left behind. As she slowed her pace, she kept a sharp eye on the stones below, searching for one that was flat on both sides. She'd pick one up and examine it, but it wasn't quite right. Pick up another and return it to the ground. And so on and so on, until she captured a good stone in her palm. Feeling the smooth edge, she smiled recalling how she used to do this with her sister Kirsty, who had a knack for picking superior stones. Bending her knees, she got low, as low as she could without toppling over, and held the stone flat parallel to the ground. Extending her arm backwards, she gave it a throw and it bounce on the water twice before depending. Not her best, but she'd grab another and indulge this simple muggle pleasure. To her it was playful, joyful, a race against herself. After all, a stone may skip a long way, but no matter the distance, it always sinks eventually.
