Looking Back
Swan knew that her mother was definitely busy. She always was. Looking out for the family, earning money, providing for her three daughters, and coping with being a single parent. That sounded easy at first thought. The reality, however, was very, very different. Being single wasn't all that hard. Parents whose spouses have died or left have a much different story. Swan knew that taking care of kids with another person is hard enough, but taking care of kids on your own is a very real challenge. The Ravenclaw sighed, since as of now, her mother was alone in the house. They never bothered to hire someone to help, not even a maid.
Swan found the urge to stare into the lake. It, no doubt, was very beautiful. The calmness of the water reminded her of those bedtime stories her father used to tell her. They were about the courageous yet calm type of stories. A single tear dropped from her eye about the thought of her dad. The first year often tried to forget it, but sometimes, it was no use.
Often, this could be a method of relaxation. It really felt like one to Swan. She looked in the sky, and the sun was still up. Maybe I could still stay here for a little while, she thought.

Carson had a letter from his sister tucked into the back pocket of his jeans, a smile stretching wide across his face. He’d decided to go down to the lake to read it— he needed the fresh air, after all. Winter was rounding the corner and Carson had been trying to get as much time outside as he could before jumping into giant leaf piles turned into hurling snowballs with his friends.
Luckily for him, it was a rather sunny day, and the sun was setting, causing its warm light to filter through the red and orange leaves and onto Carson’s skin. The leaves under his feet crunched loudly, and Carson was positive anyone anywhere near him could hear him.
As Carson walked along the shore of the Great Lake, he spotted someone huddled up a few paces away. It was a girl, with white-blonde hair and a small frame. Carson couldn’t make out any of her actual features, but he could tell that she looked a bit sad, to say the least.
Carson had to talk to her, right? It seemed almost obligatory that he at least checked on her to see if she was okay. And a genuine concern for the girl had begun to grow in his stomach, and he was sure that he’d regret it if he didn’t talk to her.
“Hey,” Carson greeted softly as he neared the girl. “You alright?”

Swan was almost hypnotised by the calm lake. It felt like that was the only thing she could sense. It was just too quiet, and Swan appreciated it. From her experience, quiet places were some of the best places to, of course, relax. There were lots of thoughts trying to distract her from the lake. Oh well, I sure miss my dad. No, really, I do.
Winter was approaching, and Swan was excited, because, oddly enough, that was her favourite time of the year. The orange leaves would become snowflakes that would gracefully fall from the sky. It was all white and pristine, yet.... it reminded her of her dad.
That fateful day in May 2016. The memories were still so fresh. The police were running through the scene, looking at the corpse. Swan was called to the morgue. They took her inside, which she saw......her dad.
"Is this your father?" the assistant that was with her asked. Swan tearfully nodded. "Y-yes, he i-is my dad..."
The funeral was held less than a week later.
Since then, her mother had been struggling with all the hardships. It was probably a relief that she didn't need to take care of the kids anymore, but Swan was still worried. She looked up, and the sun was already setting. How long have I actually been here?
Footsteps. Who was coming? A teacher coming to tell her off? Students who decided to take a look? It practically seemed like the latter idea was it, as a Hufflepuff boy soon appeared. Well, even if he just wants to walk, I could still stay here. But I should go before dinner starts.
"Hey," It was the boy she'd seen earlier. "You alright?"
"Uh, yeah. Just a little..."
Maybe I can talk to him. Hufflepuffs are nice, after all.
"No, maybe a little okay..."
Swan couldn't hold it back.
She spilled her story.

Carson was more than shocked when this girl— who he’d never spoken to before, told him her story.
The only account of death he’d ever witnessed was when his fish, Nemo, died, and he’d cried for days after that. The fact that this girl’s father died, and so recently as well, made pity for her fester and build in his stomach. He knew that lots of people hated pity, but he couldn’t help it— he felt bad for the girl.
Carson hadn’t ever met his father, but he couldn’t imagine what it’d be like if his mother or sister had died. It was no wonder that this girl seemed so crestfallen, Carson would be the same if he was in her posistion. She seemed to want someone to talk to, and Carson was the man for the job. After all, he was the only one there.
“What was his name?” Carson asked softly, hoping to coax some happy memories from the girl. After all, dwelling on the sad ones won’t help her feel better, would it? It seemed like, since Carson had met her, that it was his personal goal to make her feel better, and he was always one to follow through on those types of things.

To be honest, Swan didn't really know why she spilled it to a complete stranger. But she had her point. Hufflepuffs were nice. Gryffindors were brave. Ravenclaws were smart. Slytherins were cunning. Classic 4 Houses stereotypes. Anyway, she hadn't really expected him to come along. He just showed up out of the blue. It was kind of great to have someone to talk to, though. Lets not be too sad and focus on happy things. Think of the happy memories you've had with him Do it. Now.
The boy was quiet. Of course nobody would expect to hear a story from someone you've never talked to. That would be very weird. The happy moments with her family were many in the past, but now, they were oh so little. Her sisters mysteriously disappeared after their graduation from Hogwarts. Her father was dead. Her mother was too busy with work to do anything else.Maybe she's working 24/7?
"What was his name?" The Hufflepuff boy asked her. He was trying to make her less sad. That was nice, to be honest, though she knew some kids who would despise pity. There were many memories with her dad. Lots of them she couldn't count at all.
"Marcus....Marcus Mapleleaf. Also, my name is Swan Mapleleaf. What about you?"
