Happy Birthday To Me

@Emile Yorke
May 19th... Finn was officially 12 years old today.
He found himself sitting on the freshly cut grass next to the Great Lake, knees tucked into his chest. He stared out at the water, thinking about the past year. The lake held many memories for him - seeing the giant squid, Markus...
His heart twinged as he thought of Markus. He remembered how they had danced in each other's arms right where he was sitting, the sound of his violin... He couldn't help but feel complete dismay that his best friend wasn't here to share his birthday with him.
Finn rested his chin on his knees and pushed the thoughts out of his mind.
Finn's birthdays were normally rather... unassuming. Due to his parent's financial situation, his present was always a candy bar. And while his siblings were rather cute when they sung him happy birthday, they still annoyed him relentlessly.
He had thought that, perhaps, going to Hogwarts would give him a better birthday. Or at least, he'd hoped. But he found himself alone without even a single annoying sibling to sing him happy birthday.
"Happy birthday to me... Happy birthday to me..." He sung softly under his breath, eyes trailing over the water's surface without much thoughts. How depressing.

Happy Birthday To Me
Reducio
Let me just say, the hello kitty picture is so cute
Emile had gone down to the lake for a little bit of time to himself. During his time at Hogwarts the Lake had become a place he could go to collect his thoughts and himself, and it had proved to be very useful to have a place like this. He also seemed to be getting caught up in his own emotions and thoughts, and sometimes he just needed a break. This place, with it's beautiful views and clear water, and that fact that he had a squid to maybe see, always seemed more magical than ever, and today he felt like he needed a little bit of magic. He had just gotten word from his grandmother that his grandfather had become bed-ridden, which was heartbreaking to Emile, since he had been able to walk fine for the past couple of weeks.
Emile trudged to his usual spot by the shore of the lake, pulling out his notebook from the pocket of his robes. He opened the notebook gingerly, taking out a piece of paper. It was the letter from his grandmother. He read it again and sighed a bit loudly, then put it back into his notebook. He looked out on the lake. How were his parents doing? Was his grandma okay? How was she dealing with this? Most of all, would his grandpa get better? He shook his head, trying to think about the water rippling instead of thoughts like those. He didn't feel like thinking about that right now, it was too beautiful a day for sad thoughts like those. Plus, if his grandpa didn't get better, how would be be able to read to him when he saw him next? "I have to be optimistic." Emile muttered to himself.
He took out his little leather notebook and scribbled something down, probably along the lines of: "Thinking optimistically, a character type." He closed it and put the pen in his pocket. Just then, he heard..singing? It was very soft, and Emile could almost make out the melody. "Happy birthday to me... Happy birthday to me..." The voice sang. It seemed relatively close to where Emile was, but until now Emile hadn't much met anyone while he was at the Great Lake. The song sounded kind of sad, even though it was happy birthday.
Emile stood up and peaked over the rocks, seeing another student a couple of yards away. He tilted his head. Should he disturb him? He debated with himself for a moment before deciding maybe he might want some company? It did seem as though it was his birthday today. Emile walked over to where the boy was sitting, seeing that he did seem to be kind of sad. "Uhm..hello. Happy birthday?" Emile said, a bit of question in his voice. "I heard you from over there." Emile said, pointing to the place he had been at before.

Happy Birthday To Me
The sound of an unexpected voice caused Finn to jump in his seat, head flying upwards and looking around wildly for the source of the sound. Finn had a tendency to meet people this way - by being discovered doing something wildly humiliating. His eyes landed on the source of the sound - a boy. Finn cleared his throat awkwardly and stretched out from his tucked position, attempting to look a bit more casual and less crestfallen and pathetic.
The boy in question seemed to be about the same age as Finn. Immediately, the similarities between them stuck out. Similar messy dark hair, same light eyes, similar frames... Their color palettes were slightly different however, and Finn was a bit taller, though that wasn't a surprise considering his outlandish stature. Finn also noted the boy's Gryffindor robes - he hadn't yet interacted with many Gryffindors, he realized - and the delicate way the boy spoke and moved.
Finn's eyes trailed over to the spot that was pointed out and he face-palmed internally. Of course he'd been heard. What was he thinking, singing out in the open? Was he a bloody bird, or something? "Um, yeah.. It's... it's my birthday. I'm 12 now." He said a bit awkwardly, still extremely embarrassed of being discovered. He must have looked demented before.
Finn then scrambled to his feet, hastily brushing the dirt off his robes before swiftly extending a hand toward the boy. "My name's Finn Valois. First-year Hufflepuff." Introducing himself properly seemed like a good first step in reconciling the situation. "Please don't think I'm weird," He added without thinking.

Happy Birthday To Me
Emile felt a bit bad for startling the Hufflepuff. He had a worried look on his face. "Sorry for scaring you, I didn't mean to." Emile apologized, scratching the back of his neck nervously. Had it been a mistake to disturb him? Maybe he wanted to alone. To Emile, he couldn't stand to see someone alone on their birthday. "Can I sit?" He asked. He sat down next to the boy and crossed his legs. He stuck his notebook back into the pocket of his robes, since he noticed he was still carrying it from before. This was a time he didn't feel like writing for once, he wanted to not seem rude and actually talk to the student.
It took Emile a moment to realize he was a Hufflepuff, as he had only been staring at his face and not as his robes. He felt his face turn a bit red, but decided to not let that get the best of him. They had just met, he didn't want to show his awkwardness if he could help it. Emile also noted that he hadn't yet talked to many Hufflepuffs. Only in the explorers club, and another girl he had met whilst studying. He hadn't made any friends with them yet, maybe this would be his chance?
"Um, yeah.. It's... it's my birthday. I'm 12 now." The boy answered, seeming to be a bit embarrassed. Maybe that was because of the fact he had been singing out loud? Emile couldn't be quite sure, but he did know he would also be very embarrassed if it were him as well. The Hufflepuff seemed to be a bit awkward as well, if Emile was judging right. Usually he was quite good at seeing how others were feeling. The short version: He was quite empathetic. He mentally noted he would do his absolute best to try and make the boy next to him feel as un-awkward as possible, even though Emile himself was quite awkward too. "Oh! Well then, let me say it properly. Happy birthday!" Emile said, grinning. "Are you waiting for someone to celebrate with?" He asked, noticing that the other was alone.
As the other boy stood up, Emile also stood up too. He wasn't quite sure why he had stood up, but as soon as the other did, Emile felt inclined to too. "My name's Finn Valois. First-year Hufflepuff." He said. Finn! So that was his name. Emile smiled brightly and took Finn's hand, giving it a gentle shake. "It's lovely to meet you, Finn. I'm Emile Yorke, a first-year Gryffindor, as you can see." He said gesturing to the little Gryffindor badge on his robes.
"Please don't think I'm weird," Finn then said. Emile tilted his head. "Weird? The word I would use to describe you is far from weird. At least that's how I feel after knowing you for about 3 minutes." Emile said nodding to him. "I don't think you're weird, so no worries there." He assured him.

Happy Birthday To Me
The boy had an ability to make Finn feel extremely at ease, he was noticing. The worries that had been plaguing his mind seemed to dissipate into near nothingness, and he was left with a lighter chest. He was, additionally, much less hunched over, which enunciated the extreme height of the child. Finn's eyes flickered to the sudden movement of the boy, and noticed the notebook the boy had been carrying for the first time. He wondered briefly what lay in its pages.
The boy, surprisingly to Finn, matched his awkwardness. This only made Finn feel more comfortable. Every time he was around a student who was overly confident, it made him question his every move and word. Somehow, having someone who Finn knew wouldn't be harshly criticizing him was comforting.
"Happy birthday!" This took Finn aback entirely. He had been so sure that he wouldn't get a single audible 'happy birthday' for the entire day. Finn's lips began to stretch into a smile before the boy asked his next question, which immediately ceased the joyous look on Finn's face as he calculated how to explain his situation without sounding like a complete loser.
"Um... no. I'm not." He decided to leave it at that instead of going into further detail, hoping that the vagueness may censor Finn's patheticness.
Emile. Finn let the name trail through his head for a moment, manually attaching a name to his face. He decided that he quite liked the name Emile. He was also pleased to hear that he had been right, and that the other boy was the same age as him.
Finn once again was overcome with gratefulness and joy when the boy assured Finn that he wasn't weird. He smiled sincerely. "You seem really cool," He admitted, albeit a bit lamely. Finn didn't understand subtlety quite yet.

Happy Birthday To Me
Emile noticed that Finn seemed to be feeling a bit more comfortable, which made Emile feel kind of warm and fuzzy inside, even though that sounded kind of cheesy. Likewise, Emile also felt quite at ease around Finn, even though they had just met, which seemed to be something rare. The school was the biggest place Emile had ever been in, other than Diagon Alley, and he thought something like being able to find someone he felt comfortable with so fast was like finding a treasure in the middle of the desert. He smiled to himself briefly before thinking he probably look like an idiot and stopped immediately.
After saying happy birthday, Emile saw Finn start to smile. Could he have been the first to say happy birthday to Finn? It was only the afternoon, maybe he had been! He smiled back at Finn, and asked his second question about if he was waiting for anyone to come, and Finn immediately stopped smiling. Emile felt like he had just made him feel kind of bad. “Um..no. I’m not.” Finn said.
“Sorry to ask that if it was personal.” Emile said, searching his mind for the right words to say next. “Well, I can celebrate with you if you don’t mind. I know we’ve just met, but maybe spending your birthday with a stranger could be..fun? Maybe that sounds super creepy. Actually, that does sound super creepy. I hope you don’t think I’m a stalker or something.” He said without taking a breath. “Sorry for ranting.” He said quickly, after he finally breathed in. Well, so much for not showing my awkwardness. He thought and sighed out loud. He hoped Finn didn’t take that personally.
Usually, Emile felt like he had to be more proper, if that was the right word to use, around people older than first or second years, because he was the type of person who looked up to people, and he always felt he had to be more mature around people who weren't his age. Maybe he would have to get over that, but for now he was still only 11, and he had some time. Knowing Finn seemed to be as awkward as he was and was his age but Emile at ease. He really had enjoyed the couple minutes they had spent together, even though they had just met.
"You seem really cool," Finn then said, which made Emile feel a bit surprised. Him? Cool? That was definitely something he hadn't really heard before. His face turned a bit red from being caught off guard. It showed even more on his pale face, which was a problem since he got flustered easily. "Well, thank you, you seem very cool too." He responded.
