Information: This is a house adventure for Hufflepuff students. [Reference Link] This is a private thread open to Hufflepuff students only. I will endeavor to keep my roleplays close to 200 words but I will also provide moderator prospective information such as the setting. You can make your posts as big and as grand as you would like as long as you adhere to the minimum. If you need assistance we will refer you to some excellent resources.

Thread Expectations:
  1. Please be respectful of the 200 words per post rule. This is considered to be a normal RP thread, meaning this thread adheres to the 200 words per post rule. If you do not meet the 200 word count expectation, your post will be deleted from the thread.
  2. Please respect post order. Post order is the order in which players post. So if You join a thread with myself the post order would be myself - you - myself - you... If another player enters the thread named Sara the post order would be myself - you - myself - you - Sara - myself - you - Sara - myself - you ... Threads can get quite large, meaning that there might be ten people in a single thread. It is very difficult and in some circles considered disrespectful to post between yourself and one to two other posters several times in a single day before the others can have a chance to post because they might have something to interject.
  3. Post order as mentioned above can make a thread move quite slowly also -- because of this, we are going to state an OC time limit as well for how long we will wait for their post after it is their turn (1 day). After this time their post turn is skipped and we move onto the next user. You are not kicked from the thread and you can post whenever you remember to post in the thread, that being your new place in the post order because we will automatically skip your post until you post again in the thread once your post was missed.
Setting Description: You are at the lake's edge. The lake itself was like a mirror reflecting the cloudy skies above. A few stars would twinkle through the inky black night sky. Camp was under a large weeping willow, the delicate leaves would umbrella the Huffle house and curtain them from the rest of the world. It was quite lovely and if they were older it would be seen as perhaps a romantic setting. There was no campfire yet, some of the Hufflepuffs would likely busy themselves building a fire. Two of the coolers already rested against the trunk of the massive willow tree. There were four more to bring, something that the Prefects were likely struggling with still unless they pawned it off on another one of the students. Several Hufflepuffs had found a place to sit, a large log they had dragged beneath the tree. Several of the girls were chatting, one of the upper classmen was whispering about how she planned to sneak away and take a dip in the lake sometime after midnight. Some of the boys had also gathered into another group, they were discussing the possibility of playing a practical joke on some of the lower classmen.

Roleplay: Solomon heaved his heavy pack onto the ground. A pair of critters escape the pack before it came crashing down. The ground shuddered on impact, the pack was heavier than one would expect. He was pretty strong for an old man. He was well packed, he retrieved a folding chair and a lantern from his bag. He set the iron lantern onto the ground as he opened his chair. It was emblazoned with the name of his favorite Quiddich Team, somewhat gaudy certainly but it was a comfortable chair he was unwilling to part with. He would then lift the lamp and check the fuel level, it was full. Good.

"Priorities -- a fire and some green sticks for roasting 'n toasting!" Solomon called out. Finding green sticks would not be difficult out here, finding dead wood on these well cared for grounds, on the other hand, might take some effort. Yes, he could simply cast a spell and make it happen but that would hardly be 'roughing it.' Building a fire with your bare hands builds character. It also tires them out. The later of those things being particularly important. "Then ghost stories and sugar comas!" he proclaimed. He wondered if any of them had any good ghost stories, he had a number of them but every once in awhile the kids give him a new one he has not heard before. [WC: 234]

OOC: First to post! YES!

James heaved his bag from off of his shoulders and onto he ground in front of him. He inhaled, feeling the cool evening breeze kiss his cheeks. He stood under the willow tree where the Hufflepuffs would be staying over night, watching the lake gently lapping at the grassy shore, feeding the willow tree. The trunk of the tree was thick and a little curvy, stretching up to the starry night sky. It's branches drooped down and over, creating curtains of vine-like arms of the tree.

James started to wonder whether or not he should set up a tent for the night. James could set up a tent, sleep on the ground under the stars or find a place up in the tree. As he started listing a bunch of pros and cons in his head, he heard the Head of Hufflepuff, Professor Solomon Lear call out. "Priorities -- a fire and some green sticks for roasting 'n toasting!" Solomon called out. James instantly forgot about setting up his camp and shot his hand in the air, jumping up.

"Professor Lear! I'll do it! I can make a fire!" he called excitedly. It was true, James had been a Muggle Boy Scout and had gone on plenty of camp outs and one of the nicknames he had been given there was Fire-Breather. He could turn a singe ember into a roaring bonfire by slowly blowing and adding food for the flame.

Arceus finally arrived at the camping grounds, after lugging all the trunks and coolers of the students and after placing the last cooler on the soft green grass he slid onto the grass himself closing his eyes while he let the breeze embrace him in its relaxing, cool hands, "Ahh.." he breathed out a sigh of relief since he had been hauling coolers and trunks for almost half an hour and was exhausted.

He heard his head of house Solomon giving instructions but wasn't paying enough attention to hear exactly what he was saying except something about getting sticks for the fire and since he wanted to help in any way possible he decided to go get some himself, so after slowly getting up he started off towards the trees collecting any sticks he thought would help start the fire and keep it going.

After returning he heard James asking if he could make the fire so he went up to his friend and threw a few dozen sticks onto the floor, "Here you go, that should help" he said grinning. After depositing all his sticks he went up to the tree and slid his back down the truck and lay on the floor with his eyes closed.

Have a nice day and peace out..

Reid was glad he wore a jacket, he was quite susceptible to the cold and catching a cough wasn't on his agenda. He still had his backpack on himself, surveying his surroundings out of curiosity. Being out here made him have an appreciation for the Scottish highlands, it was hard to see the stars back in Derby. In fact, he never remembered ever seeing the stars because of the light pollution in the city. But whenever his dad took him camping, it was the only time he was able to clearly make out details. The feeling of being out here didn't change, all he was missing was his dad.

But that didn't stop him for wanting to have a good time, camping was a favorite event no matter who it was with. He dropped his things off a little closer to where the fire was being built, wherever the space deemed fine. Reid stopped trying to unpack as he heard the orders from the professor, prompting him to stop what he was doing. Reid already saw that there were two boys who were tending to the fire, perhaps he could help with something else. "Professor Lear." he spoke, walking over to the man. He was wanting to ask, unless he was just going to get sent to get more wood and fuel. "What can I do right now?"

"Trouble usually finds me."

Camping, what a foreign concept. Somewhat barbaric all things considered, but that made it exciting too. The shut in was at first adverse to the idea but after concluding that the people in the books he liked to read probably liked to camp then he could likely learn to like it as well. Setting aside the rest of his reservations as he plodded towards the lake he wondered what sort of things they would be getting into over the course of the evening. The head of Hufflepuff was a very interesting man and he felt himself leaching some of the man’s enthusiasm just by being in his proximity, it made it hard not to think that they were in for a good evening.

Plopping his bag on the green grass he looked around the sky not quite dark yet but dusk was likely not too far behind. A cool breeze drifted in off the lake that rustled the grass and whistled though the trees. Taking a moment to enjoy the scenery and smell that he’d never encountered in his cloistered city life he began to appreciate the idea of camping more.  When Mr. Lear called out that they’d be needing fire and green sticks he noticed that several people rushed towards the idea of making fire but he was left rather puzzled.

“Mr. Lear, what is a green stick? Most of the sticks I’m aware of are brown, unless there are green trees somewhere that I’ve missed.”

Unaware of his fax pas, he blurted his statement without any idea as to how off base he was, after all he’d come from muggles, maybe wizards really did have green trees with green sticks. Either way he was content to hunt them down after he knew what he was looking for.

Yes, but why?

Cynthia set her rucksack carefully on the ground and look around.  “This seems like a great place for a camp-out, Professor Lear,” she said with a smile.  She thought it was quite nice that he take the time to do something fun like this for his students.  “Thank you for taking the time to do something fun like this for us,” she added.  Though she was happy for this activity, she started to miss her parents a little.  This was the first time she had ever gone camping without them.

She was glad she had dressed warmly and in layers.  She had decided to set up her tent not too close and not too far from the lake.  Once it was fully erected, she crawled in and unpack her things.  A warm, cozy sleeping bag, squashy pillow, flashlight, and a few other necessities were set out for easy access.  She kept her wand tucked away in the hidden pocket of her favorite jacket.  Her tent was just a simple muggle tent since they were roughing it as the muggles called it.  Once she was finished with her tent, she walked over to Professor Lear and asked, “I have my things all set up, Professor.  Is there anything I can help with?”

Solomon preferred the feel of fresh night air on his face, the presence of a few mosquitoes hardly a quandary for the Professor. All he needed was his favorite feather pillow and his napsack if he slept at all, which was doubtful of course. The kids were made of pure energy, something that he would have to exhaust if he intended to get any sleep.

James:
James volunteered to make a fire and he scurried off with the expendable energy only a preteen could have. James would have never seen the grounds after twilight unless he was among the riffraff that would try and sneak out at night. He had his own means of dealing with kids out after hours, so either he was an exceptional sneak or this would be a first. The trees would appear as tall grey ghosts as darkness and rolling fog overtook them. The twisting, black vines and twigs that littered the ground were punctuated by spider webs. Thin tendrils of cream-colored web might catch James in the face as he made his way into the woods on his own. Something would skitter over an invisible bridge, the slowly rising moon would barely illuminate the impossibly fine thread of web that the arachnid was perched upon. It appeared to be watching the first year as he explored in the darkness.

Arceus:
Arceus ran off to help, he would find sticks and twigs - a bundle would fill his arms and he would return to the campsite. The sticks would clamor as they fell onto the ground at Jame's feet. They were not far from the campsite, but they were far enough. They had wandered away, not quite lost but not quite found either. At least James was no longer alone.

A spider would scramble over Arceus' feet.

How many were there?

Enough...

Orion:
Orion, a bookish appearing young man whom had for the most part kept to himself approached the professor.

“Mr. Lear, what is a green stick? Most of the sticks I’m aware of are brown, unless there are green trees somewhere that I’ve missed.”

Solomon had a warm smile as he turned to Orion. "Green wood is unseasoned wood... or fresh wood." He would pluck a twig from a nearby tree with a loud snap. The stick was about as thick as the professor's thumb. The meat of the stick has a honeyed hue. He passed the stick to Orion. "Green wood has no cracks, the bark is firmly attached and it is likely to sizzle or bubble at the edges when it is placed on the fire," he explained as he searched the ground for a piece of 'old' wood. He would find something, there was not a lot of stray seasoned wood where they had landed which was why James and Arceus ventured off to find some wood. "This stick has probably been on the ground for a few months... maybe longer." He passed the stick to Orion. "It is grey in comparison and feel how much drier it feels beneath your fingertips." He instructed. "The old, dry wood is sometimes called seasoned wood and it burns easier so it is good for a fire. The newer wood like the one I plucked from the tree has a lot of moisture in it and it will not burn as easily. In our case we can use slow burning wood as a tool to told our hot dogs and marshmallows."

He would give Orion time to appraise the wood and note the difference for himself. It is better to understand the difference than to simply be told or to memorize what he had explained. "That green stick is too thick, that is the science of hunting for a green stick. You want the stick to be thin enough that you do not destroy your hot dog or marshmallow but not so thin that the stick cannot bear the load." Much like the three bears, one had to find sticks that were just right. "James and Arceus are already searching for seasoned wood, why don't you look for some decent green sticks that are good for toasting."

Reid:
It would be presumptuous to call Reid one of the handsome main protagonists, after all he was merely an eleven year old boy but sometimes it would seem as if there was an older mind driving a younger vehicle. That would be the case in this instance. Reid was the Head Boy despite being a first year, an impressive feat. Solomon found Reid unusual, he would have suspected a Slytherin considering how quickly he climbed the ranks of student in Hogwarts but thus far he had found no evidence to support such a suspicion. He might actually be an asset and this old man might get to bed at a decent hour, a man can hope!

"Professor Lear."

Reid addressed him as formally as any student.

"What can I do right now?"

His first instinct was to tell him to help build a fire, it was getting so dark it was getting difficult to see the coolers. The only problem: the wood has not yet arrived.

Wait... where was Arceus and James?

**** where was Arceus and James!

He only sent them off to get some wood! They could not possibly be lost. (They weren't hopefully.) "You should check on Arceus and James." He recommended. They probably found a shiny rock or got distracted by a bat. Oh god what if they used the sticks as bat... on eachother! His imagination was getting ahead of them.

Cynthia
Cynthia was a polite young lass. She made polite conversation as she set up camp for herself. She was more prepared than some of the others such as Solomon himself. There was a sense of safety when someone had walls, even if they were made of cloth. "No problem," he replied. "Truth be, I just wanted an excuse to sleep outside." Solomon let out an honest laugh as he made that admission.

She would make short work of setting up camp. When she was done she would approach the Professor and Reid. She was also looking for something to do. "You uh... should check on James and Arceus with Reid," Solomon supposed. They could not have gotten into much trouble but he was unsettled knowing that the two of them were out of sight, Blackburn would have his head if the kids got themselves hurt after he insisted on this outing.

Reid would have his work cut out for him it would seem. "If they are getting into mischief," Solomon would rummage through his things. "Use this," he would declare as he handed a long length of rope that appeared to be similar to a lasso to the young woman. It was a harmless length of rope with a hint of magic he was nor going to bother to explain. He was a bit of a prankster, he felt that was a better means of keeping the kids in line than actually rebuking them like some monstrous overlord.

James crunched his way through the greens and browns surrounding him, looking for the firewood he was sent to find. It was quite dark, and it seemed to be getting darker with the increasing amount of forage overhead. James wasn't afraid of the dark, he was just naturally more cautious around it. He had watched Stranger Things and other shows and movies similar to it before. Normally, he would be completely assured that nothing like Stranger Things was real, and he would be more thrilled walking around in the darkness, imagining himself in a fictional situation; but this time, he was in a real-life situation where magic was real, and he had been told of creatures in this world. Magical and sometimes dangerous.
James suddenly heard additional crunching in the dirt behind him. He whisked around, scattering more leaves underneath his feet, and saw in the dark, silhouetted by the light of the dim lanterns back at camp, a figure coming closer, stomping through the leaves. As fear began to take root inside of him, James immediately wished he had brought his flashlight, but then remembered it was deep in his jacket pocket. He fumbled with his cold hands in his pocket, before pulling out the flashlight. The figure was only about 10 feet away, and still getting closer. Breathing hard, James went to click on his mini flashlight, but stepping back, tripped on a loose and stray root of a tree. James fell backwards, landing on his back, knocking the wind out of him. He gasped for air and scrambled up to his feet, only to be blinded by the stickiest spider web he had ever touched. James yelped and waved his arms around, like any sensible human being caught in a tiny spider web would do. He scratched at his face, tearing and wiping away all of the silky web that he could, before finally finding the switch for the flashlight. A cone of light shot out of the darkness from his light, and as he turned around wildly, it fell upon the thing that he had been scared of… it was Arceus!
“Oh, holy…” James exclaimed, breathing out in relief, “ What the heck!? You scared the heck out of me!” James exclaimed, continuing to brush the spider webs off of his face. For the moment, he was distracted as to what comes with a spider’s web… the spider, of course. And was it just one, or many?

While Mary was approaching the camp, she saw some people going away from it, but could not tell yet who it was. They were probably going for wood as there was no fire yet, but there was still a bit of sun light so she knew where she was going, and knew where she was putting her feet not to fell. While getting closer, the cooler felt heavier each step she took. When she finally arrived she let it on the floor and sight in relieve.

"Ufff, glad I finally arrived! Shall I put the cooler somewhere special?" She asked turning to the professor Lear and smiling. She was really happy to there and get some time to spend with her house companion. She knew some, but mainly girls from her dorm but never really got a chance to speak with some of the boys and was kind of sad that she never had, nor took, the chance to really talk with them and get to know them. She was thinking if beside the fire there was anything to do? Do some preparing with the food? Get her slipping bag out of her bag? But even if she was not scared of insects if she could avoid sleeping with a spider or ant family that would be better. "Anything else I can do to help Prof?

He walked down to the lake, just finishing his work and packing his bag. He seemingly was a bit worried about spending a night out with the rest of his house. When he got in view of the lake it seemed empty, no fire or group of people. All there was the Professor and a girl, he began to walk a bit quicker now wishing to see who the mysterious girl was. The path down to the lake seemed a long and daunting track with its own obstacles.

"Hi professor", he said as he walked past the professor. Taking a seat next to the girl, he gave her a smile. Looking into her eyes, he began to lose all of his thoughts.

"Hi beautiful, whats your name" Harley took a book out of his bag named 'Rangers Apprentice'. He then placed it dow and turned around towards the girl, "oh and my name is Harley sorry about that"

Arceus jumped back as James fell back on a loose branch and landed on the ground with a loud thud, before getting up and screaming like a madman and waving his arms, but since it was dark he couldn't see anything so he didn't know why James was so scared, he then put his arms over his eyes as a bright light blinded him and dropped some of the sticks he was holding in the process, “ What the heck!? You scared the heck out of me!” he heard James shout while rubbing his face, but this all happened so fast Arceus was confused.

"Wha- What dude calm down I was just getting you some sticks since you were looking for some" he said holding his hand in the air to sow James but ended up dropping more sticks in the process, he kept blinking since his eyes were still shocked from the light nearly blinding him. He then got out his flashlight to see more clearly and started picking up sticks with his flashlight in his mouth. After getting up he pointed his flashlight at James location and gave him some of them,"Why did you get so scared anyway, you were screaming" he said chuckling while walking back to the fire.

Once he arrived back he threw the sticks gathered so far on the floor for the Head of House to use and sat on a log opposite two other people, he then looked at James and signalled with his hand him to come sit by him. "Sorry by the way" he said putting his hand on the back of his head and relaxing on the log.

Have a nice day and peace out..

Reid felt dwarfed in comparison to the older man, it didn't exactly scare him but his neck would have to surely strain if he talked to Solomon all the time. He thought that the Professor's name was pretty cool too, next to Professor Blackburn's name. Perhaps he could change his name into something that was pretty cool too, but he didn't know what it would be. He felt more responsible in a way, maybe that was just an instinct of his since he always looked out for his people.

He liked being trusted enough for things like this, but it also made his nerves go on the fritz every time he thought about it. What if he messed up? He worried too much for a kid his age. "You should check on Arceus and James." He knew who Arceus was since he was the Prefect, but he wasn't aware of who James was. Since Solomon made it seem like they were together, he hoped that was the case. "I'll go do that." he nodded with a slight grin. The boy pressed his flashlight's button, only to see it wouldn't turn on.

So as he walked away, he smacked it a few times to try and get it going. He swore he put new batteries in this thing, plus the bulb was new. Finally it came alive and pierced the night in front of him. By the time he got it working though, he saw that the boys were done. He still chose to approach them anyway, he supposed he could check. But as he got closer, he saw something on James' head. It look like a leaf, but saw that it moved. Horrified, he shined the light upon the back of James' head to see there was a spider. "There's a spider - on the back of your head."

Serena made her way down to the lake. She was a little later than most of the others but she was helping everyone out in the Common Room. They had managed to bring down most of the things, which was great. The girl was dressed in very casual clothing today. She wore a pair of red shorts and a white t-shirt. She had a sports jacket thrown on top and long socks, with her feet in sneakers. In fact, she was pretty much just wearing her exercise clothing - give or take. The shorts and t-shirt worked well as pajamas too. Of course, she had brought along an extra blanket in her bag in case she got a bit chilly.

Heading out to the lake, the female gazed around. Her eyes fell onto a group of Hufflepuff students. Grinning, she made her way over. They sat near the edge of the lake. It was such a beautiful night. The stars glittered across the night sky, reflecting in the water down below. Everything was so serene today, it was beautiful.

The prefect made her way to the others, where a few people were busy following instructions that were given to them by the Professor. Giggling to herself, she loved seeing everyone. They looked so happy and peaceful - it was going to be a good day. Well, hopefully. She approached the group. Looking around, she spotted Professor Lear and made her way over, "Hey Professor, hey Mary, how's it going? Where do you want this, Sir?" She asked as she held one of the other boxes of food and snacks. She stood beside Mary, awaiting instructions on where to put the boxes "Need a hand with anything?" She continued, looking around. She noticed that a few of her friends had gone elsewhere, perhaps to get some more things. They had definitely made their way here before she did but didn't seem to be here yet.

Cynthia looked around at the other students setting up their tents and such.  She noticed everyone was doing a wonderful job and they seemed like they were all having a fun time.  She just hoped no one got hurt during this trip.

After asking Professor Lear if there was anything she could help with, he suggested that she go with Reid to check on James and Arceus and see if they were doing okay with the gathering of some firewood.  He handed her a length of rope in case they needed to round up the other two boys.  “I’ve never tried to… lasso… anyone before.  Is it hard?” Cynthia asked Professor Lear.  She secretly wondered how they would feel if those two boys had somehow gotten into trouble and had to be rescued by a girl.  She thought it would be funny.

Seeing Reid walking away towards the woods, she turned to hurry after him.  “Hey, Reid, wait up.  I’m coming with you.  You should never go into the woods alone.  Especially at night,” Cynthia called after him.  She turned on her own muggle flashlight and shined it around.  She knew the dangers of camping outside.  “My name is Cynthia, by the way.  Have you ever been camping before?  I’ve gone a few times with my parents in the Forest of Dean.  Of course, those were all wizard-style camping with magic and all,” she added.

Campout  Private + Hufflepuff   Finished

Taking the professor’s words in and realizing his mistake Orion flushed briefly before shaking off the embarrassment. Taking his words to heart he observed the differences Mr. Lear explained before getting a general idea of what it was he needed to find. Thanking the professor before he hopped off to go find the “green” sticks in question.

As he made his way out of camp he noticed a pair who had just arrived, catching his “hey Beautiful.” Pulling a face at the remark before mock gagging as he went on his way he decided that if he ever heard such words out of himself he’d ask somebody to hex him real good.

Back to the matter at hand he eyed the surrounding trees trying to think of the best way to find branches of the right size. Looking to his fingers he decided if each branch was just about the size of a pencil… then it should be just fine, and when it came to school supplies he was nothing if not prepared. He was well aware that quills were the preference for classes but his notes to himself were always done in a number 2 pencil, as such he had the perfect tool for drawing comparison. With pencil in hand he set out to gather branches, it seemed he was alone in his task but that didn’t bother him much he was most at home with his own thoughts.

Finding branches that were fresh on trees he lined his pencil to them and broke them off idly humming a tune to himself, he figured one solid bundle ought to do It. Thusly he toiled merrily excited to think that sooner or later marshmallows would be speared on these very same sticks. He’d never had a smores before but from the very excited descriptions he had received it was not something he wanted to miss out on.

Yes, but why?
