Anastasia had no homework left to do, a letter to write to her parents, and a castle to explore. So, naturally, she ignored the letter to her parents and had begun exploring the castle and its ground. She'd explored a good amount of the castle and had managed to get quite lost, so she decided to observe the ground. She'd been outside a bit, but she hadn't really put that much effort into exploring it, due to the fact that she really didn't like being outside all that much. Sure, for Quidditch or something, but in general, she vastly preferred indoors to out.

Her parents had always said that the Lake was rather interesting, so that was where she was heading. She'd been to it a few times, but it'd seemed rather boring when she'd been there. She wondered if there was actually a squid, or if that was just a tall tale to keep first years from drowning themselves. Neither would surprise her, since, this was Hogwarts, and just about anything and everything was possible.

She daintily picked her way through the grass and found a relatively clean patch of grass. She'd found a biography of Godric Gryffindor, and she wanted to find out more about her house. She had gone her entire life before her Sorting expecting to be a Slytherin. The idea that she would be anything else had seemed ridiculous, so she hadn't much bothered to learn all that much about the other houses. She knew the basics, but she always knew everything about everything, and her house was certainly not going to be an exception.

She reclined on the class and began her book. She was a few pages in when she heard a strange, disjointed sound. It was almost humming, only it was definitely not musical in the slightest.  The sound seemed to disappear and she resumed her reading. However, a few moments later, she heard it again. She wondered what the devil that might be. She closed her book and stood. Brushing herself off, she looked around for the source of the bizarre noise.

She listened intently and followed the sound. She hadn't quite figured out what she was going to do when she actually found the source of the noise. If it was a person, was she going to ask them to stop? Or ask what they were doing? If it wasn't, what was her plan then?

He had no idea what he was doing, just had the feeling he should be doing it. Listening. The prefect hadn’t listened properly in what seemed like forever, hadn’t tried to hear the melodies that everything in this world seemed to have, seemed to reverberate with. Perhaps the boy was so muddled in the head that he heard noises, or perhaps he just drew logical conclusions and connections when others did not. A rustle of grass, a whistle of wind, a flap of bird’s wing and scuffle of some creature crawling about in the undergrowth all came together.

It formed a wonderful melody that the boy had tried for years to emulate. Humming to himself over and over again an elusive concoction of sounds that made tunes. He remembered tunes that he listened to for long enough, each place holding a special melody. That was how to find the fens, after all. You just listened for it, followed the music until you arrived at itss shrouded shores.

Today, however, it was the great lake that he was humming to, or rather trying to hum with. The prefect was never satisfied with his attempts, but he didn’t stop trying. One day he would get it right, but until then he would content himself with his attempts, broken humming and cracked melodies that didn’t seem to have any kind of rhyme or reason.

He was sitting down on the grass, cape draped around him, umbrella strapped to his back like a claymore, humming along to himself, eyes trained directly ahead, focusing on nothing.

Anastasia turned a corner and saw a Ravenclaw boy who appeared to be humming. So that's what that noise was, she supposed. She really hadn't thought through what she was going to do when she found the source of the sound. She'd assumed that it was a bug or a broken pipe or something. She hadn't actually thought that it was a person and she wasn't entirely certain as to what she was going to do about it. She considered asking him to stop or something since it was rather distracting and she was trying to read. She decided to figure out what on earth he was doing before asking him to stop.

"Excuse me, are you quite alright? It's just that you're rather, um, buzzing," Anastasia said. She examined the boy as she neared him. She vaguely recognized him as a prefect, but couldn't recall his name or anything beyond the prefect thing. She figured that things would be fairly normal - he'd explain what on Earth it was he was doing or trying to do, she'd politely ask him to cease, and that would be that. Although truth be told, she really had no basis for that, since this was Hogwarts, and things were never, ever, ever "fairly normal".

A soon appeared in his peripherals, asking if he was okay, and claiming that he had been buzzing. How had his humming sounded like buzzing, had it really been that bad or was she confusing it with a bee that had been passing her by? Whatever the reasoning behind it, he wasn't going to be able to listen with that girl asking him if he was okay. Who did that, anyway? Go up to someone that was humming and then ask them if they were okay?

It was probably just a wizard thing to do. Or maybe she didn't know what humming was and thought he was dying. Did she not know how to hum? It was possible, he had no idea what kind of upbringing this girl had, nor where she grew up. Maybe humming offended her. He was going to stop anyway, he reminded himself. There were other things that needed tending to. Like finding Eris and watching her to make sure she stayed safe.

Or go looking to find out where all the professors had gone to, and try to determine if they were all going to leap out of the ground and murder all those students that hadn't prepared. Turning to leave this overly confusing girl, he thought better of it and decided to make sure that she didn't need something else. He was a prefect, after all.

"It's called humming. Did you need anything...?"

"No, I didn't need anything, I was just wondering what it was, because, if you don't mind my saying, it sounded quite odd," Anastasia replied when the boy turned back. She'd phrased it like that so he could choose whether or not to tell her what he was doing. She hadn't outright asked him, but she had made it clear that she rather wanted to know what it was. It was really up to him, which rather irritated her because she liked being in control when possible. Still, she was talking to a second year and Prefect, so maybe she wouldn't exactly have full control the entire time.

This whole encounter was most unlike her - it wasn't well thought out and it was rather awkward. She was normally fairly adept at navigating things like this, and she rarely rushed into things without thinking them through. Sure, the times she did were rather notable - such as chasing down a bird and jumping off a broom, but other than that, she thought things through to an almost ridiculous extent. She bit her lip as she waited for a reply or lack thereof. She really wasn't sure what to expect from him since they'd just met and he seemed rather, well, unpredictable.

If she didn't want anything but to see what humming was, there was nothing Kaegen could do about it. He wasn't versed in starting conversations or continuing them, and it sounded like a dismissal to him. So he turned to go. Important things had to be done. He had heard rumors of new professors, had heard rumors of dangerous beasts on the loose.

He had even heard rumors that some of the old men that made the food were planning a mass assassination of the entire student body. Granted, he had made that one up. But it was founded in fact. They could go anywhere, anytime. No one placed any restrictions on them. And judging by grandfather, they were incredibly powerful.

That was an entire slew of reasons to be on your guard. That and they didn't seem to like talking much. Hiding something, no doubt. They moved like prey, but Kaegen wasn't fooled. The death witches couldn't slip past him, neither could the little old men. Another thing he had noticed was that he was allergic to a student. One of the girls he had talked to made him sweat more whenever he was close to her.

Assassin old men and fellow students that triggered allergic reactions. Add that to whatever was going on with the professors, and you ended up with quite the mix of paranoia.

"No, I don't mind you saying. I don't know why I would, anyway"

And with that, the prefect headed up the hill, towards the castle.
