Places like this were just meant to be drawn; the magic of them captured with graphite, charcoal, or ink.
This was the thought running through Khris Bailey's mind as he let his eyes take in the beauty around him, his mouth relaxed in a gentle smile and breath held as if trying not to disturb the serenity of the moment. Really though... This little glade was pure magic and in a way that had nothing to do with the whispered spells of his fellow students in the courtyard below. It simply was.
Probably the flowers...
The blond chuckled and rubbed idly at the tip of his nose leaving a fine grey powder before the familiar skritch skritch skritch sound of charcoals against paper graced the silence once more.
Or the giant oaks standing guard over the hills. Or the way the wind keeps leaping through the valleys to push waves in the surface of the great lake as if it's eager to get to the other side.
A small twitch turned the corner of the young Slytherin's lips upwards into a self-deprecating smirk.
Careful... You're waxing poetic again and if you keep at it and the next words out of your mouth are gonna be Shakespeare or Wordsworth or Tennyson or something...
That could be potentially terrible.
Especially if you were to get caught.
Khris gave a quick hum of concern, the reminder of the possibility forcing his head to poke up from his drawing to cast a wary glance around him, teeth worrying at the corner of his lower lip as his brow furrowed. Sometimes it was okay to be found -if the person was decent or disinterested or kind- but other times? Other times it was dangerous. Young boys in school aren't particularly understanding you see. It isn't their fault, not really, but poor habits -even if created by intolerant teaching- still hurt.
Golden curls twisted this way and that searching for any hidden threats that might wish to harm the drawing held carefully his grasp. Obviously it was concern for the drawing. Obviously. He wasn't scared. Of course not.
The only sight was a stray critter scampering up a tree with a flick of fluffy tail and a thorough and chattering scolding. It was fine. He was still alone in this grassy little glade as far as he could tell. Hunkered down and hidden amidst the tall grass and flowers atop an extra blanket stolen from the dorms. Hidden, secret, and safe.
That was one nice thing about a school this vast and so filled with adventure. Children flock to excitement like moths to a flame leaving plenty of quiet and undiscovered little corners to meet, places with character to capture or quiet flower speckled fields to enjoy. It let those few shyer students have places they could claim for their own.
Khris let his breath out in a soft puff and turned back to his drawing, unconcerned with the fear of being discovered once again. Besides, with a school so big and with grounds this vast the chances of being discovered up here were near impossible.
Right?

Typically, Michael Evans wasn't one to wander the grounds of any place-magical school or not. Especially when he probably had things more important to do.
However, on days like these, what could be expected of him? The sun wasn't overly glaring, and the breeze smelled sweet-never mind the chill on his skin.
Still, Michael was careful, stepping over large rocks and such and frowning as the grass tickled his shins. He reached down to swat away the blades, only to huff in annoyance as the uncomfortable itch came back once more.
God, it's pretty out today.
See, Cambridge was nice. Nice, but always bustling with tourists. But Hogwarts, this very glade, was undisturbed, as if nobody had ever stepped foot in it. Of course, Michael knew that wasn't true. Yet still, it was nice to think that he was the only person to have ever discovered the small hill of flowers.
Michael reached down to brush his hands along a few daisies, watching them dip under the weight of his hand and bounce back up as he lifted it.
He shook out his hair, reaching up to push a few strands away from his face.
It's like I'm the only one in the world.
Michael hummed happily as he turned around a tree, but his eyes grew wide at the sentiment being broken.
"Khris? Where-what-out here?"

There was the possibility Khris needed to find a new way of expressing surprise other than yelping.
A serious possibility.
It was loud. It echoed. It was silly.
It made his face turn a brilliant shade of red as he realized how undignified the high pitched squeak had been and he groaned loudly in embarrassment as the vestiges of an echo made its way back to him. You couldn't really blame him for the sudden fright or the way his eyes blew wide as he practically tossed his charcoals into the long grass to keep them hidden, his sketchbook apologetically sat upon, but still...
Something needed to change before this screeching thing became a habit. The undue stress and ringing ears was going to be the death of him, he was sure.
His heart tripped and stuttered as he finally gathered his breath, the pounding in his ears slowly abating enough to let him hear the still hidden newcomer's words. Huh? They were quiet and broken, a half managed sentence that sounded increasingly familiar.
Dark curls came into view from around the moss covered trunk of an old tree and Khris' breath was released in a slow, quiet whoosh.
I see...
This was okay, or at least, not terrible. Michael seemed like a decent fellow when they had met in the dorms and though the interaction hadn't gone quiet as smoothly as he would have liked the lad seemed to be a decent and understanding character. I mean, you did practically slam him into a wall and he's still talking to you so at least we know he doesn't hold a grudge.
Either way the charcoal was toed a little further into the grass just to be on the safe side. Don't go searching for trouble is all. He wasn't embarrassed or anything -not in the least- just careful. Cautious due to too many "misunderstandings" in the past. Misunderstandings involving fists and cruel words, torn paper and crushed graphite, scattered artwork strewn across the pavement and black eyes. Things like that tend to make a lad careful no matter how confident they truly are.
Even so Khris forced a smile despite the nerves attempting to derail him and he raised his hand in greeting, a wave offered beckoning his dorm mate over to the little clearing despite his minds protests.
"Hi." It came out pitchy and squeaky. "Um..." That sound was no better and he grimaced. His father would shake his head in exasperation if he heard the state of his nerves. Honestly. Where was the poetic dignity and smooth talking of his mental voice when he needed it? His brow furrowed as he glanced up at his fellow Slytherin.
"Right. Sorry. Yeah, hi? Er... what- What are you doing out here, Michael?"

Michael grinned and sat down next to the other boy, crossing his legs and pushing a few strands of hair out of his face.
Cool, good, good, okay! Khris seemed cool enough with it.
He examined the boy for a moment, making a face. Khris looked absolutely horrified, red faced and embarrassed.
"You don't need to look so scared, I'm not gonna rat you out. Or anything." Michael tried to sound confided, but it came out as more of a timid little squeak than an actual statement.
Michael craned his neck to look at the other boy's face better, smile widening a bit as he reached out to place a hand on the other's shoulder. "As for what I'm doing out here. Uh. Well, that's-that's a great question."
And with that simple response, all the resolve and confidence Michael had been feeling, if even for a second, was thrown out the freaking window.
"I'm a me-what are you up to?" He asked, wrinkling his nose and dropping his hand down to his lap.
Michael looked around the glade, eyes landing on little clumps of flowers as he awkwardly looked at the ground. His chin almost touched his chest, his hair a mess.

Funny how one can suddenly be filled with confidence when around those more socially awkward or anxious than you.
It was a fascinating revelation that Khris had become increasingly aware of these past few days. Around Micahel or Edric or anyone more shy than he really. Where he was normally the stutterer and wringer of trembling fingers he found himself offering an encouraging smile or a comforting word instead. Where quiet and timidity was his norm he began laughing and offering jokes in fond bouts of jest. True his humour still needed a bit work but considering he hadn't had much practice it wasn't that terrible.
Or at least, he hoped it wasn't that terrible.
Yes, the moments he felt truly confident were still rare and his mind only allowed him the luxury of bravery around certain people, but it was getting easier. Not perfect, but better and sometimes that's all one can ask for in this world.
"You're a you, huh?" He chuckled softly and offered a bright smile to his dark haired dorm mate, head tipping to meet lowered eyes. "I suppose that means I'm a me too." he murmured.
The tension from his earlier scare slipped from his shoulders as he leaned back, elbows locking and hands braced against the ground as he tracked the owls stretching their wings above. He tried not to flinch from the light pat against his arm earlier and had succeeded. Mostly. Hoped his cheerful grin was enough to keep Michael from noticing and prayed the damp from the grass wouldn't soak through the blanket to his sketchbook.
"I was just enjoying the quiet I suppose. It get's kinda busy down there." He jut his chin towards the courtyard below where the clear hullabaloo of students could be heard. It wasn't that he didn't like them. For the most part he enjoyed meeting new faces and getting to know the various witches and wizards of his year. It's just that it got to be a bit... much... sometimes. A bit too loud or bright or whatever word you want to use.
"Coming up here..."
Khris took a steady breath and met Michaels eye with a self conscious chuckle, balance shifting so fingers could twirl idly in the curls at the back of his neck. Habit. Tried to break it. Can't. He swears one of these days he's gonna need his fingers cut out of a mess of curls but the thought hasn't quite stopped him yet.
"Coming up here is nice. The way everything is just still. It's perfect for-"
He broke off with an unsubtle cough.
Perfect for drawing.
But I shouldn't say that.
Best not to rock the boat, right?
Silver blue eyes darted to the hidden shadow of charcoals in the grass.
Best to stay quiet. At least for now.

"Oh, shut it. You know what I meant." Michael muttered, grinning.
"I was gonna say mess, not me."
He sat down next to the other boy, twiddling his thumbs. "So. You're out here because it's pretty?" He asked, tipping his head to the side.
It really was pretty out here, Michael had to admit. The breeze was chilly, yeah, but the flowers were so bright and vibrant this time of year. The grass swayed just slightly, the trees were in full flower.
Michael hummed some nameless tune under his breath, tapping the beat on his knee and shooting the other boy a grin.
"Because if that's the case, that's completely right. It's super pretty out."
His cheeks were tinted slightly pink from the chilly wind, hair tousled and messy. Michael probably needed to brush his hair.
As nice as the school was, Michael really, really missed home. It was nice here, really, but he missed the comforts of his house. And his really soft bed. Because if he was honest, his bed in the dorm room was ridiculously stiff.
Plus there was the fact that there weren't TVs here. No TVs in their dorm room, anyway.
Home was nice, but sitting there with Khris was a close second to being there.

Khris grinned at the sound of an absently hummed tune and the quiet beat of a familiar song from out there in the real world; the place where his parents lived and his old school would just be winding down for the season.
Being here was a funny thing like that.
Hogwarts was just so BIG and GRAND it took up practically all the space in one's mind, what with the lessons and the meeting of new people and such. It left barely any room to think about "life out there." To remember that it still went on without him. That new films were being release and new songs were being sung, technology was being made and used and replaced just like that. That even though he kept in contact with his parents they'd be surprised with the height he'd gained (though it was little) and the confidence he'd only just begun to find.
"Do you miss it?"
His voice surprised even him after the still silence of the glade and Khris flushed, embarassed before meeting Michael's glance. He was curious though. Perhaps he was the only sudent occasionally disenchanted with all the enchantment here. The only one craving a good movie or a set of headphones or the silly joy of a video game played a bit too late on the weekend.
He wrinkled his forehead, serious despite the pink still in his ears. He might be after all. The only wizard student missing his life back in the muggle world.
"Our life back in the real world? Or, the muggle world if that makes more sense?" He cleared his throat before his eyes widened marginally. "Oh! Unless you're from a wizarding family that is. In that case this must not be too different for you."
Owls continued their lazy circles above them and a steady stream of red sparks could be seen in the distance where some young wizard must have been practising periculum.
A spell yet to be learned.
He stood to get a better view, the once hidden sketchbook forgotten as he continued to ramble, content in this seemingly safe company as he peered curiously at the sight.
"You know... my dad's a wizard so I'm used to magic and charms being use but my mum's a muggle so we only use it occasionally as she likes old fashioned things." He chuckled quietly before glancing over his shoulder at his still seated companion.
Oh.
Thats when he noticed.
The sketchbook sitting there abandoned by his robes as he stood. Vulnerable and exposed and dangerously drawn in.

"Miss it? Home?" Michael smiled a bit, as if reminiscing. "Yeah, I do. A lot, actually. There's no TV here."
He glanced at the other boy and shook his head the slightest bit.
"My parents are-what was it you said? Muggles? Not magic. M'dad works at a bookstore, I dunno what my mum does. Haven't seen her in ages." Michael shrugged.
"It is cool here, though."
The only thing going through his mind at this point was I need to learn how to speak.
Michael tipped his head to the side, watching the other boy stand carefully and shifting a bit in his own spot. The grass was damp, tickling his hands as he leaned back onto them. A slight breeze blew passed his face, causing him to sneeze quietly.
"How far do you think we'd have to go before we found a muggle town?" He asked, turning his head away and squinting to see the gamekeeper's hut at the edge of the forest.
"It just looks like there's nothing here for miles, but I saw a few little houses on the train ride down. Speaking of the train, I wonder why they use a steam engine, of all things. Just seems strange to me."
Michael turned his head back around, reaching up to scratch his cheek. As he did so, his eyes landed on the sketchbook in the grass.
"What's that?"

"I... Wah? TV?" A puff of laughter burst from Khris' lips at Michael's statement, silver blue eyes scrunching in mirth as slender shoulders shook from giggles. The statement wasn't untrue, couldn't deny that. Technology just didn't work around here and though films and such weren't exactly his favourite of things it was something he definitely missed from the muggle world. It was just that Michael stating that as the reason for missing home seemed to have struck a funny bone in him. Or at least... surprised him enough to be thrown into a fit of giggles.
He cast a silly grin over his shoulder towards his fellow Slytherin. "I suppose I miss the telly a bit too." The words were hiccupped between laughter, blond curls ruffling as he shook his head. "I just... I wasn't expecting that answer I suppose. Thought maybe you'd say it was your-"
He caught himself in time, teeth biting the edge of his lip to halt the unintentionally but potentially hurtful words.
Michael had said his mum hadn't been around; that she had left and he hadn't seen her in ages. Hadn't said much about his da either. Assuming parents were the thing Michael had missed most from home would be cruel and though he didn't know the whole of the story, Khris understood enough to know not to pry.
He turned slowly then, head tipping to one side as he regarded the young boy sat before him. Carefree. If Khris could pick a word to describe the mess of curls and the lounging frame it would be that. Michael looked as if he hadn't a care in the world, hands propping him up on the blanket amidst the flowers and grass, head tipped cockily to the side. Funny how that works. If Michael hadn't said anything, hadn't made that one offhand mention of his parents...
He shuffled awkwardly as his mind drift in the silent breeze, his newly discovered friend's words slipping past him. Something about steam engines? It didn't matter.
Khris' life hadn't been a perfect one but it had been a good one. He had a family that was close, parents he knew that loved him dearly. Grandparents from both the wizarding world and muggle world alike and security. Being with out that, it would be near impossible for him.
Michael had entrusted him with a tender part of his past and purposefully or not, Khris knew he could only do the same. Offer something soft. Something that would normally be frightening to speak about.
He took a shaky breath.
"I can show you? If you like?"
The quietly spoken words drew him out of his reverie and Khris head snapped upwards, silver eyes meeting dark brown with a gentle fondness. Oh. Right. "Um..." He stepped over to sit beside Michael once more, a quick and embarrassed shrug given before he drew the sketchbook carefully into his lap. "It's- I draw. Sometimes. Sketches. They aren't very good but here." His breath caught and his eyes blinked rapidly in surprise as he slid the book towards the young lad. He didn't do this often, hardly at all really. It made his stomach flip and his hands tremble but it was worth it. Right? A minute nod of his head was given, confirmation to himself that he could indeed do this. That it was the right thing to do."What's that?"
Michael had entrusted him with a tender part of his past and purposefully or not, Khris knew he could only do the same. Offer something soft. Something that would normally be frightening to speak about.
He took a shaky breath.
"I can show you? If you like?"

Flower Crowns & Charcoal Dusted Fingertips
Michael grinned, nodding. "Yeah? I'd love to see 'em."
He really was feeling great about it. Nobody'd ever really entrusted him with things like this.
So many feelings at once, really. Michael'd always had a problem with feeling too much. It was overwhelming at times, to be completely honest.
Not only did he have problems with feeling too much, but he also had issues with thinking too much. Even now, where he'd come up specifically to clear his mind, he couldn't stop thinking. Someone trusted him?
Why was Khris so nervous about the art?
What was he about to say?
Michael shook his head and looked back up at the other boy, smiling once again. "Yeah, I'd love to see what you drew. Like. Seriously. That would be amazing."
Too much.
"I mean. Not in a weird way. I'm not like, gonna die if I can't see them. Your drawings. I'm just. Yeah. It would be nice. I'm sure you're a really great artist."
Michael felt himself going red, immediately putting on a smile and reaching up to shake his hair away from his face and hide his embarrassment.
Sometimes, he really, really didn't feel as normal as he probably should.
