How do you think about meeting me at the lake this evening an hour before dinner?
After having received the reply to her earlier letter, Evelynn had hardly needed to ponder long before coming to the conclusion of what action she would take. As soon as she was able, she had slipped an affirmative response to the Slytherin, and about an hour and a half before supper she made her way down to the Great Lake. Rather than head to her regular spot below one of the large canopied trees on the far side, she kept herself in relative open, the easier to be spotted.
In truth, the return letter had been far more of a success than she could have hoped for. Although it had been a bit surprising to her that Flash hadn't informed Seilun at least after-the-fact that he had let Evelynn in on the gameplan for the night of the ball, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Hopefully. Admittedly, a certain level of anxiety clung to her like a damp shawl after that, a hope that she hadn't overstepped her bounds in relieving that information and thereby gotten Flash into trouble. But, she reminded herself, it was too late now. The cat was already out of the bag, so to speak, and the best that she could do would be to make the most of it at this point.
On the other hand, there was undoubtedly a sense of excitement and urgency sparking from the tips of her fingers to the souls of her feet. Given what Flash had said, Seilun and he were equally invested in everything going on. He had also indicated that of those others in the Slytherin gang who held various degrees of knowledge, she was one of the ones he trusted more. Which likely meant that she was one of those with whom confiding would not only be safer — hopefully — but also more worthwhile. And given that she had been directly involved with Vladimir at least to some degree given his apparent initiative to invite her to the ball, this could hopefully prove mutually beneficial.
Still.. There was of course the shadow of doubt licking the back of the redhead's mind. Evelynn crouched to gather a stone from the shoreline where she stood at the water's edge. Rubbing it against the pad of her thumb, the stimulation of the gritty texture served to ease some of her tension. This wasn't the first time that someone had cautioned against the use of letters, for one, and Seilun had made mention in her letter of being deliberately unsettled by Vladimir. Whatever that could possibly mean. Regardless, a sense of fear and hesitation had permeated the letter, in addition to the overwhelming caution…
Not for the first time she wondered if perhaps she would do better to drop it entirely and play the role of the ignorant student. Just go about her daily duties as though nothing were amiss. Surely that would be easier. Gentler on the mind. No longer would she be faced so often with the question of whether it was worth it or not to be here. That notion was discarded as swiftly as the stone she attempted to skip across the lake. It went under on its first impact. Just like that thought. She knew she'd never be able to ignore the events. Not now that pandora's box had been opened and she had stepped foot into the fray and made contact with the first of like-minded individuals.
No. She was in it for the long haul. For better. Or for worse. Slipping her hands into the pockets of her sweater dress, she inclined her head to peer up at the sky, waiting for Seilun's arrival.

This feeling, this sickening feeling that she did something that would have bad consequences had been like a hot stone in her stomach for days, weeks now, wherever she went. Evelynn's letter had come not only unexpected but unhoped for as well. Opeila had told some of the Slytherin students what she had gotten into. Involved some of them in her plans even. And it went all wrong.
The Slytherin had hesitated to tell anyone else. She would probably always involve Flash in her plans, she couldn't keep her secrets from him for long. But Evelynn? Opeila had spoken to her once, after Persephone Barret poured tea over her face. In February. Quite some time ago now.
Loras felt his owner's nervosity, likely because she walked up and down the common room for quite some time and when she finally left it to go down to the lake, he followed her.
The two of them couldn't really get along, but whenever necessary, they would protect each other. No matter what.
As soon as she left the castle, she put on Flash's coat. It was a warm coat for cold weather, but it had a weirdly calming effect on Opeila. Like her friend was around, even if he wasn't.
The Slytherin didn't know what she would tell Evelynn today. Maybe she wouldn't tell her anymore than she already had in her letter. Or... maybe she would even end up finding out more than she already new. After all, there had been incidents in house Gryffindor as well, right? And wasn't it her who had said to Professor Jensen that they needed to work together?
It seemed like a challenge to stick to that now.

How long she had stood there looking over the calmly lapping waters of the lake, Evelynn couldn't know. The sun still hung in the air above the tree-line, thus supper couldn't quite have come yet. A glance down to her wrist watch confirmed as much. It was still early enough that so long as Seilun appeared sooner than later, she'd still be able to grab a plate. When her thoughts were so occupied, the pang of hunger always seemed to prod at her peripherals, as though a gentle reminder not to forget that sustenance would be required to keep her mental capacities functioning at their greatest potential.
Still… It wasn't food that she craved, but rather the conversation that was to come. Given what Flash had said, she'd been quite hopeful at the start of the ball to have finally happened upon those who seemed as keen as she to uncover what was going on. To be able to speak to Seilun about it directly, regardless of the Slytherin's apparent hesitation, it stoked the embers within Evelynn that had grown cold following the chaos of the ball. Rather than a barrier, Evelynn viewed her counterpart's caution as a blessing. Finally here was someone who understood, or so she could only hope, the gravity and potential consequences of the school's precarious situation.
The scuffing of steps on grass drew Evelynn from her reverie. A glance over a shoulder identified the source as the one she'd been waiting for.
"Seilun," she greeted calmly, turning languidly on the spot to face her.
Her gaze flickered briefly to note a coat that seemed just a little too warm for the weather, as well as the presence of a cat that dogged its mistress's heels. She didn't question either observation. They returned to Seilun's face quickly enough, after quickly panning to ensure there was noone else within earshot. Even still, the volume of her voice was kept to the minimum level necessary to reach Seilun. An offered smile hoped to ease any of the tension suspected to exist given the tone of the letter.
"I was glad for the suggestion to talk in person. I don't disagree with hesitating to say too much in a letter. Someone else brought the concern of intercepted mail up not too long ago, and even though I've taken to passing notes by hand, I'm not particularly fond of the idea of someone poking their nose where it ought not to be and finding information they ought not to know. Or that we don't want them to know that we know. Better to err on the safe side."
"And.. Sorry about D'Spacito.." she continued, lips crimping as her gaze lidded to depict a clearly unimpressed expression. Her right arm raised to fold across her abdomen and anchor the elbow of her left while the same hand raised to toy absently with the seam of her garment at the shoulder. "I was.. Less than impressed with his recklessness. You weren't the only one who had attended with plans of interrogation. But.. Anyway.."
With an inclination of her chin, she cast Seilun an expression of concern. "Are you alright?" Even before she'd finished the question, she shrugged her brow and immediately dove into the qualifier, "Well, I mean, none of us are really alright, but.." The concern returned, eyes shifting around Seilun's face to read whatever truth might be revealed within the minutiae of the girl's countenance. "What you said in the letter… It's almost as though you think everything that's happened to Slytherin is your fault… That must be a heavy burden.. What.. Happened?"

"Decipio", Opeila greeted her back as she walked towards the Gryffindor.
When she explained that she preferred personal conversations over owls, Opeila sent her a weak smile. "The safest thing is to keep your mouth shut. Especially if you know things you are not meant to. Or... if others know things about you they are not meant to. I would advise you to stay out of this mess as long as you can, if I didn't know that you're likely not gonna listen. So I assume I will help you instead. Or... we will help each other."
She apologized for D'Spacito's behaviour. Opeila shook her head. "Not your fault, is it? He made the whole evening pointless. A pointless chaos of injuries. I got myself involved with Vladimir Athanatos, replied to his stupid loveletter and agreed to go to the ball with him. I got the attention of the possible enemy. For nothing. I wish he would have thought for longer than a minute."
Evelynn asked her if she was alright. Was she? Opeila wasn't even sure at which point one was alright anymore. She had not been alright for months and she wasn't alright now. "I am not alright. I thought the ball would be the opportunity to put right what I did. It is not almost like I think that what happened in Slytherin was my fault. That is exactly what I think. I've been tricked. I've been tricked into making a terrible mistake and if it comes out... the professors likely know. And so do some of the Slytherins. But if it goes around in Hogwarts... They will kill me." She stared at the water.

Seilun Yourself Short
Despite everything that she had faced this year, and the trials that had preceded it, few were the things that could shake Evelynn's resolve. Once she had dedicated her mind to something, she saw it through. There was always a reason. A motivation of some sort that would drive her actions with a strength greater than any whim or fantastical desire she might have. This urge to uncover the truth, to investigate the happenings about the school, it could hardly be described as a passing fancy. Curious she might have been, but there were lives quite literally at stake.
It was no wonder, then, that her brows rose in surprise with what trailed from the other girls lips. Keep her mouth shut? Stay out of it? Advising her as though she were some sort of delinquent who was merely sticking her nose where it didn't belong without any shred of understanding of what was going on? Her own lips pressed together to a thinning line just as her brows furrows to shadow her lidding gaze. Had Seilun not concluded her introductory response with an offer to help each other, the fire of reproach that had been stoked in the pit of Evelynn's stomach might have gone unchecked. Instead, she had let it pass without commentary.
Likely good that she had refrained, as Seilun then launched into a more intriguing response to Evelynn's subsequent questions than she might have hoped for. It even served to curl the corners of her lips, the hint of a smile giving credence to the satisfaction she felt at hearing she wasn't the only one that had thought D'Spacito to be a barbaric buffoon in wizard's robes. It was a fleeting feeling, however, her attention quickly shifting to what came after. Athanatos. So that was his name. He'd been the only one the House Elves had refrained from naming in full as they hadn't been able to pronounce it. Not that it likely mattered, but she stored that away for later nonetheless.
"If anyone were to kill you," Evelynn commented quietly, squaring herself more fully to the girl as mixed concern and uncertainty spread across her features. "They would be little better than Athanatos and the rest. I can't imagine you're the only one he has tricked, either. He was fairly blatantly spreading those dreadfully tainted candies at Valentine's, and publicly for a profit. I can't imagine what he's done from the shadows where none are looking.."
Interesting that he had sent her a love letter, though… By the way she had worded it, he'd sought her out. Asked to bring her to the ball. But why? What could he have gained from that? Had he been trying to lure her into a sense of calm? Get into her good graces with flattery and attention to ask her questions, or worse.. Bring her to their side, perhaps? For a moment, Evelynn felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. A worry that perhaps she had made a mistake in inviting Seilun to converse. Given what Flash had said, she had made the assumption that Seilun could be trusted. But was that actually the case?
"What happened, though?" Evelynn asked after only a moment of deliberation. Eyes still on the girl, she relaxed her stance and shifted to take a seat on a neighbouring boulder as though silently inviting Seilun to come and sit with her. "Whatever this mistake is that you made, perhaps there's some way that good could still come of it. You said you were tricked, but maybe we can try to determine the motivation behind it…" Her voice trailed off to the crimping of her lips. It was very evident that whatever had happened, Seilun was, or at least appeared to be, rather stricken by it.
"You know…" She continued empathetically after a moment, "If there is something I'm coming to learn, it's that people tend to find things out. Sooner or later. Secrets don't usually stay secret forever. If it really is something that you're very worried about, it's better to keep control over it. People are going to hear the story, and since they will, it's better that they hear it on your terms before anyone else gets the chance to tamper with the details and paint you to be some sort of villain. Why don't you tell me exactly what happened, and we can sort out how best to do that. I owe you, after all. Let me help?"

Evelynn almost looked angry when Opeila started to speak, but she really didn't care. If Evelynn wanted to hear what Opeila knew, she at least wouldn't get to say that she didn't warn her.
The Slytherin's head shot up when Evelynn mentioned the candy. How did she forget about them? "So the candy was poisoned? I missed what happened after I bought one for that Gryffindor. He payed me for it and I didn't know how creepy that guy is back then. Athanatos I mean, not the Gryffindor kid.", she explained to the girl.
"Also bold of you to assume that I am any better than him. Maybe I have better intentions, for now. Who is to say that I would be better than him when I lived through the same he did? Who actually knows anything about Vladimir Athanatos?"
The Slytherin picked up a stone and tossed it into the water. "Naive, that's all I am. I've harmed my house because I was so stupid." Evelynn asked what happened. Of course she did. But Opeila was scared. She was not a person who denied her mistakes, but that doesn't mean that she wasn't scared to admit them sometimes. Opeila was scared of the judgement of people she felt somewhere alike. She had been scared of Jack Burnett's judgement and she was scared of Evelynn Decipio's now. "I let him into my common room. My bag broke, and there was snow and I didn't want the library books to be ruined, so I accepted his offer to help me carry them back. I... I didn't think so much about it, my head was elsewhere. Something happened in my family a few days before... Well, whatever. I figured that he must have been behind that spider attack when Victor said his name. And thereby... caught me guilty. I made it possible, Decipio. A prefect wanted me and someone else to help her look for Athanatos but I refused.
Instead I wrote him an owl, asking him to meet me, so I could ask him some questions." She paused and looked at the water. "You know I was involved in the organization of the Ball? Vladimir asked me out. And after that I was even more determined to go through with the plan, I called together some Slytherins to back me up even." Her face turned frustrated. "And then D'Spacito had to be an idiot, shorten the time I had to interrogate Vladimir before I could even start and he got my friends hurt. Seriously, I just want to hit him, if all this was pointless because he had to go through with a plan he probably thought about for half a minute maximum..."
When Evelynn said that it was better to tell the story on her own, Opeila shook her head. "No... Not yet at least. I need to find a solution. I need something I can give people, anything that shows them that I am not working against them. Some hope, some information. Anything."
