indentLakes were something that Adelyn completely adored. She hardly had any experience with them given that she lived in the heart of London, but the brief vacations to her Aunts cabin were second only to Hogwarts on Adelyn's long list of favorite places that she had been. She loved the coolness of the water, the way that the world seemed to melt away the moment that you plunged underneath the blanket of the lake - even the entirely different wildlife. It was like a whole other world, but it was right beneath her nose. Adelyn simply couldn't get enough of it.

indentWhat was more was that Adelyn could swim quite well. As a young child, she had been quite horrendous. Several incidents occurred where her brothers had to rescue her from large bodies of water because her toddler self had just been too drawn in. So, after about the seventeenth time of this occurring, her parents finally reasoned to send her to swimming lessons. The nearly drowning adventure was repeated a few more times before Adelyn got the hang of it - but each time she surfaced from nearly being suffocated, she would merely leap right back in, determined to show the water who was boss.

indentIt was actually about a 50/50 who won but. Those were small details.

indentHaving of finished her homework for the day (or more so, as much as her brain could handle. Man, she hated History of Magic) Adelyn found herself perched on a rock a few steps into the shallow end of the Great Lake, her shoes behind her on the shore and a collection of pebbles on her right side as she watched the moon rise into the distance, the stars making their way into the abyss of the night, warning her of the impending curfew. But Adelyn was lost deeply in thought, a happy grin dancing contently on her face. Everything about Hogwarts, the few months that she had been here - they were just magical (literally). She had no idea how she had been blessed with magic blood, but she had been. Adelyn would've been happy without a single birthday or Christmas present for the rest of her life. Being a wizard was present enough.

indentHowever, Adelyn's peaceful daydream was soon interrupted by a splashing that was not so distant from where Adelyn sat. Her eyes squinted at the motion before she dismissed it - until it happened again. A little irritated that her perfect moment had been so rudely interrupted, Adelyn turned her attention to the motion once more, her heart rate picking up a bit. She knew a friendly squid resided in these waters, and some merpeople, and a colony of grindylows - but the water demons were said to reside in the weed bed at the bottom of the lake. Why would any thing like that be near a First Year Gryffindor, just minding her own business?

indentBrushing her silly fears off, Adelyn went to stand up slowly, deciding that this was an appropriate time to leave the situation. It was getting late, and she was tired - her eyes were probably just playing tricks on her, after all. There was no way that any sort of water demon was hungry enough to come to the surface for some -

indentAdelyn was ripped from her reassuring thoughts as her bare foot slipped on the slick surface of the rock, sending her tumbling into the water with a SPLASH. Adelyn had caught herself with her hands, which saved her head from any damage, but her hands and knees stung with pain. Adelyn broke the surface of the water, surprised that such a serious drop off was present so close to the edge of the lake. Slowly, the First Year began to move herself towards the shore before something grabbed her leg.

indentA grindylow.

indentHer worst fears confirmed, Adelyn let out a scream before she was tugged into the lake. The girl kicked and thrashed furiously, trying with all of her might to loosen herself from the young grindylow. The demon was smaller than normal size, but his grip was determined - he was not letting her go.
