Freshwater Calamari
The majority of Stassie’s week consisted of a series of similar thoughts. No matter how hard she tried to think about homework, exploring other parts of the castle, or even practicing magic in secret, her mind couldn’t help but hyperfocus on just one singular fact like a microscope:
The Great Lake had a giant squid in it. A GIANT SQUID. IN THE LAKE.
Stassie couldn’t understand how everyone managed to be so calm about it, especially when giant squids were, according to the Hogwarts Library, one of the most mysterious animals of the deep sea. Her first hypothesis was that magic had desensitized the older population; with the sheer wonder it inspired in so many, perhaps giant squids weren’t so novel as they would be to someone who was starting to learn more about the magical world. Other first years like herself initially reacted to the news she shoved into their faces with surprise, but when Stassie dared to ask some professors and upperclassmen, she was typically met with a shrug.
It was obvious now that she had to see the giant squid with her own eyes—for science, of course. When the weekend finally rolled around, Stassie scarfed down her breakfast and rushed out to the Great Lake. She didn’t mind how the hems of her robes got wet with the morning dew or how her curls were beginning to get frizzy without her usual hair routine. Stassie had priorities, and that giant squid topped all of them.
After a forever of running, catching her breath, and running again, the Ravenclaw finally arrived to the lakefront. She should have savored the view more, especially when she was possibly the first one down there that day, but instead, Stassie marched down and surveyed the water with a critical eye. Nothing. Nothing…
YET!
“Come on, squiddy,” she whispered intently to the lake. “I know you’re there somewhere.” Although Stassie didn’t consciously know what she was going to do with the knowledge of the Hogwarts squid, her heart was already leaning towards friendship. She had to become the squid’s best friend. She had to become godmother of its children. There was no other way.
