A curious dark green bottle was being passed around the dark classroom. According to Professor Valtome, it contained a very special elixir. It was none other than the Antidote to Common Poisons. Lucy carefully passed it to Amadea, who was her seatmate for the class. They had met briefly in the Trophy Room a few weeks ago, but they hadn't talked much since. Still, it was nice sitting next to someone that you knew. She smiled at her and raised her eyebrows as she passed it as if to say, 'Don't drop it.' She didn't dare say the teasing remark out loud in fear of attracting the scathing remarks of the professor.

She continued copying notes on how to brew the potion correctly. She knew that every instruction had to be followed to the letter or disaster would occur. Since this was their first time brewing potions, she was actually rather excited. This craft was less immediately rewarding than, say, Transfiguration, but she could see the usefulness of knowing how to brew potions. Even the most basic potions were useful - whereas transforming a match into a needle? Not so much. The potion in question was proof: an antidote to common poisons! That was a useful potion all by itself, and it sure would come in handy in the (admittedly rather unlikely) event that you were poisoned.

Finally, it was time to transition from learning about the potion to brewing it. Most people were automatically paired up with their seatmates, and Lucy was grateful that she knew Amadea at least a little bit. It would make working together easier, especially if disagreements arose. She noticed a girl out of the corner of her eye sitting by herself. It was a Slytherin, judging by the colour of her uniform, and Lucy didn't know her. She turned to Amadea, inclining her head in the girl's direction as if asking, Should we invite her to join?

However, before Amadea could respond, Lucy decided to do it anyway. She would hate to try to brew her first potion by herself, and no student should have to go through that struggle. Her conscience overruled whatever Amadea's opinion would have been with the need to do the right thing. "Why don't you go get the ingredients for the potion?" she suggested to Amadea. "I'm going to invite that girl to join us."

Lucy turned and walked over to the Slytherin. "Hi. Uh- I saw you weren't sitting by anyone. Would you like to join our group? I'm sure it would be fine for the three of us to partner up." Lucy paused, smiling. If the girl said no, that was fine. But Lucy was already thinking through the potential of having three people carefully working to brew a potion, and it seemed much better than two. After all, one person could read the notes, another could prepare the ingredients, and the third could be in charge of the cauldron. This actually might be great, she thought, significantly more excited about the prospect of this Slytherin joining her group than she had been previously. Before, she thought it would be nice to include her. Now, they might gain a distinct advantage in their task of brewing their first potion.

The potions room looked weirdly empty today one of the students missing was Lizzie’s friend Bella, so Lizzie sat alone at her table in the Conner of the room while drawing on her assignment as the professor explained today’s classwork to the few students in the room , she had to be away today” she mumbled to herself, when Lizzie turned to see a girl with sandy blond hair approaching her from the other side of the room

"Hi. Uh- I saw you weren't sitting by anyone. Would you like to join our group? I'm sure it would be fine for the three of us to partner up." the girl kindy asked her. Lizzie surprised that someone was asked her to join their group just sat there blankly ”Oh hi” she said snapping out of her daydream “um sure I’d love too join you” she replied with a smile on her face

As she got up from her seat and started to walk to the table to go join the two huddle puff girls she looked around at the room feeling like she forgot something ”Oh right I’m Elizabeth but you can call me Lizzie, and you are?” she asked still smiling at the girl

Amadea hurried into the potions classroom, hoping she wasn't too late. She had gotten turned around in the corridors yet again and had gone in the complete opposite direction instead of heading toward the basements. Thankfully, she slid into an empty seat right in time, noticing the girl next to her appeared to be another Hufflepuff that Amadea recognized as Lucy O'Sullivan.

She was debating about saying hello to the girl, deciding against it when she realized everyone was taking notes. Pulling out her notebooks and quill, she scrawled down everything Professor Valtome said as he talked, making sure not to miss any important detail about the elixir being passed around in the bottle. When it reached Amadea, she took a good, long look at it, just in case they needed to know about it for any future tests. Then she passed it on to the person at the next table.

As the class transitioned into the hands-on part, actually making the potion, Amadea scanned the classroom, wondering who she should partner with. It seemed as though Lucy had some other ideas and immediately claimed Amadea as her partner. Amadea shrugged. She didn't know her fellow Prefect very well, as they had only met one time in the trophy room, but Amadea had nothing against the Hufflepuff. In fact, Amadea thought that she was quite nice. It would be fun working together!

Amadea had her book open to the page on the Antidote to Common Poisons, ready to begin brewing. When she looked up, however, Lucy was on the other side of the room, recruiting another girl to their group. Amadea didn't recognize the Slytherin, but she smiled nonetheless at her when they came back. While meeting new people still wasn't high on Amadea's list of things she wanted to do and her conversational skills could use some improvement, she decided to have a positive outlook on things anyway. After all, she was a prefect now which meant she had to show a model behavior and be helpful and friendly.

"Cool, a group of three!" Amadea announced. "That means we can put everyone to work at one job to make things run smoothly. Who wants to do what?" she asked. Assigning jobs was the first step and hopefully with two other people working with her, they would be able to complete the rest of the steps in no time.

As Lizzie reached the table where the other girl was sitting she looked at the girl with the fire red hair for a few moments before noticing the fact that they were both perfects probably both in the run for head girl....”Cool, a group of three!" The redhair girl announced. "That means we can put everyone to work at one job to make things run smoothly. Who wants to do what?” Lizzie looked back at the girl trying to decide to speak and pick the roles or to just stay quite and let them decide ”oh come on Lizzie speak” she thought trying to persuade herself

”well I don’t really mind what I do” Lizzie finally answered to the girls. A few minutes later the red headed girl had taken charge of the group and gave everyone there roles in the assignment

As Lizzie stood up to go collect the ingredients and prepare them for the potion she looked back at the girls and smiled, a few moments later Lizzie returned what seemed like everything they needed being careful not to drop anything as she started to prepare the ingredients she felt a strange awkwardness fall apron the girls ”so what’s it like being prefects?” she asked trying to break the ice that had formed.

Lucy sighed in satisfaction when the Slytherin girl joined them. Her sense of duty was fulfilled and now she could focus on the task at hand. As she walked back to her original desk, she was surprised to see that Amadea had not left to go get ingredients. Well, it wasn't like the other Hufflepuff had to do everything Lucy said, but she was still mildly surprised. No big deal - she probably just didn't hear your suggestion, she thought to herself, trying to shrug it off. Or she did and decided to ignore you, whispered a different voice in her conscious, and Lucy scowled slightly. This is not how she wanted to start off their partnership - well, trioship, really. She took a conscious breath in and out, trying to dispel the unpleasant thought. There was no reason for Amadea to ignore her. After all, they were on friendly terms... right?

She slid her notes over to make room for the cauldron and ingredients, which she was pleasantly surprised to see that the Slytherin she had invited to the group left to go grab them. Amadea asked both of them what they'd like to do. The other girl didn't seem to have a preference, but Lucy was eager to get brewing. Most groups had already started. "How about I manage the cauldron - you know, stirring and adding ingredients. So that means one of you needs to be the directions master and one of you needs to prepare the ingredients with perfection," she smiled, trying to make both roles sound important. She didn't know who would be better at which task, and she decided that they could decide for themselves. Don't want them to think that I'm bossy or anything, she decided, satisfied that they could work it out.

"So what's it like being prefects?"

Lucy blinked, shocked that the girl had any clue that they were prefects. She glanced down and realized that she had worn her prefect badge to class. Okay, so maybe it wasn't so shocking that she noticed. After all, it was rather unusual to see a first-year prefect. "Uh, to be honest, I just started. So really it's making sure that I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do so that people can see a good example?" Lucy's explanation came out more as a question. In fact, she wasn't quite sure if that's what she was supposed to be doing at all. She fidgeted uncomfortably, looking at Amadea for help. "I mean it's about the same as normal I guess. I want to help people but so far no one needs my help," Lucy grinned, being more honest in this revelation. She had been so excited to become a prefect with grand delusions of swooping to the rescue for lost first-years and being their shoulder to cry on. Instead, life had gone on as normal.

"Anyway, let's get brewing. I don't want to run out of time and have our potion go sour. So, who's preparing the ingredients? And what do we need to do first?" After she spoke, she realized, perhaps for the first time, that Elizabeth had already started to prepare the ingredients. Woops. She really should be more observant. "Okay, scratch that. Amadea, what do we need to do first? Oh... hey, I don't think we've been formally introduced with one another. I'm Lucy. Obviously, that's Amadea," she said, gesturing to Amadea with a smile. Since she just said her name, it seemed natural to introduce her fellow Hufflepuff. "What's your name?"

Amadea smiled at the two girls. They seemed to be as determined as she was to get this potion correct, and she hoped that they could successfully pull it off together. As they all gathered around the desk, Lucy began giving suggestions as to what each of them could do.

She volunteered to be the cauldron person, and Amadea decided that she didn't want to be in control of the cauldron anyway. "That sounds like a good plan," Amadea said. "I can do the ingredient preparation," she suggested, mostly because she thought reading from a book was quite boring. Plus, she liked when things were absolutely perfect and her work ethic was one in which she was good at making sure everything was perfect.

She grabbed the cutting board and pulled it toward her. "I can also go get the first ingredients," she suggested. Now that she said it aloud, she vaguely remembered Lucy making that suggestion earlier, when Amadea was too focused by her notes to pay attention to anything else. Immediately, she felt a pang of guilt, wondering what Lucy thought about it. Amadea hadn't even given it a second thought; she had barely heard the Hufflepuff make the suggestion. Amadea hoped Lucy didn't think she had just blown her off. It was a good suggestion after all.

After Amadea had set up with knives and a cutting board to properly slice and dice ingredients, she answered Lizzie's question. Hopefully it would get them talking and things wouldn't be awkward. "Being a prefect is fun," she said. "You get to interact with a lot of people you wouldn't normally interact with. It's a lot of work though. Also, what ingredients should I get first?" she asked Lizzie, who was now in charge of the book.

lizzie listens to the girls what they have to as prefect while flipping thought the book the professor had gave her "I mean it's about the same as normal I guess. I want to help people but so far no one needs my help,"Lucy had stated "You get to interact with a lot of people you wouldn't normally interact with. It's a lot of work though. Also, what ingredients should I get first? amadea had asked "well it says here we should start here" she said pointing to the photos of the ingredients while scanning the table for the roots "Aha"she semi yelled Here they are" she looked at her group before adding them to the pot that has been boiling for some time now

as the roots hit the water it started to turn a lilac purple the kind you would see in a late spring sunset "Wow"Lizzie signed at the purple water um.....is it meant to be doing that" she said with a hint of panic filling her voice as the water started to bubble uncontrolable spilling over the sides of the copper pot, she turned to the other girls in a sign of help "oh no" she said as she read the book in tiny fine print it stated No not brew in copper as there are small chances of a reaction

As Amadea arranged the cutting board and knives in preparation, Lucy waited for her moment. She was actually looking forward to dropping the ingredients oh-so-carefully into the cauldron and stirring the mixture with a steady hand. The other Hufflepuff described their prefect duties and Lucy nodded in agreement. Being a prefect was fun, but she had a feeling it was going to be a lot of work. Lucy waited expectantly for the Slytherin to supply her name in response to her previous question, but Elizabeth seemed to be distracted by the task at hand. Am I not speaking loud enough for them to hear? Or… am I just easy to ignore? That’s twice in a row now. This unpleasant thought flitted around her head until Elizabeth’s excited exclamation snapped her back to present.

Without warning, the girl grabbed some roots, bypassing Amadea’s cutting board and Lucy’s slightly possessive hovering over the cauldron and dropped them in. "Uh –" Lucy started, certain that wasn’t how this whole process was supposed to go. They had roles, right? But it was too late now, the ingredients were in and the potion was already turning colours. She initially admired the colour alongside Elizabeth and was about to voice her own awe when Lizzie’s panicked question startled her into alarm. The budding reaction was indeed worrisome. Rather than staying a dormant colour, the brew started to bubble over the side.

Instinctively, Lucy shot out her hand as an almost protective action and backed away, her arm possibly connecting with either Amadea’s or Elizabeth’s torso and pushing them away from the cauldron if they were close enough for her to reach. “That’s not good,” she responded, eyes widening and breath coming in shallower waves. Not only was the brew spilling from the pot to the table and floor, it also smelled atrocious. The lovely light purple colour was now a sinister dark purple, resembling a very deep, charred black. Lucy wasn’t sure what went wrong, but she did know that potions could be lethal when done incorrectly. She paused, hoping that the reaction had finished and that they were relatively safe.

“Um. Well. That was… unfortunate,” she attempted, trying to be generous. If we had stuck to our roles… her mind started, but she kicked the thought down. It could have happened to anyone. Don’t blame her, she shot back at her first thought, and she forced a smile. “We could always… start over?”

Amadea smiled encouragingly at her partners. She hoped they did well in the class.  Amadea was fairly certain she had ingredient preparation covered. She was good at making sure everything was precise, and unlike some other students, she had enough patience to make sure each slice was cut to perfection. If it wasn't, the potion could turn out to be a disaster. Obviously, that would not be a good thing. Amadea was aiming for high marks today in class. She just hoped her partners had the same goals.

As she aligned another knife with the cutting board, she looked over toward Lizzie and Lucy, wondering when they were going to begin. Had she spaced out too long thinking about her grades to not notice that they had begun? Without any warning, Lizzie suddenly grabbed a handful of roots and dropped them straight into the cauldron, bypassing Amadea's perfectly set up cutting board. She opened her mouth to protest, but was distracted at the sight of the hideous mixture that now sat in their cauldron. Amadea wanted to begin sobbing at the sight of it.

Amadea glanced over at Lucy to see what her fellow Prefect thought of the whole ordeal. It seemed as though she was just as flabbergasted as Amadea herself was. Hopefully the potion would be salvageable. At least it had turned a pleasing shade of lilac purple, right? Just as the thought had occurred to Amadea, the potion began bubbling ominously and soon was bubbling over the side of the cauldron.

"Oh no!" Amadea exclaimed, rushing forward as if to try and stop the mixture from coming out of the cauldron. Thankfully, Lucy held her back from touching the mixture that had now turned a dark purple. Amadea had no idea what to do. Clearly, they had already done something wrong and they hadn't even gotten very far into the potion making. Was she really that inadequate at making potions? Amadea reassured herself that she wasn't a horrible potioneer. After all, she hadn't even touched anything that had gone into the cauldron.

Turning to her partners, she wiped her hands on her robes. The potion was now turning a dark, charred black and it began letting off a foul smell. Clearly, things had not gone well. Whatever the problem was, Amadea wanted to fix it. "Yes, let's try again," she added after Lucy suggested starting over. They had only just begun and Amadea would have been sad if they quit now. They had to try again. "This time, let's read the directions a bit more carefully," Amadea said. "That way we won't miss anything important." She glanced at Lucy, hoping the girl wasn't taking it personally. After all, it was really no one's fault. It was simply just an accident.

"Okay, well, let's all work together. That way we all know what's going on and not just in our separate roles," Lucy suggested, rubbing her forehead with her hand in a sort of world-weary way. This setback was normal - understandable, even - but so unnecessary. "I'll look out of the book with you, Lizzie, and we can both help Amadea and tend to the cauldron when necessary. Let me just go get a new cauldron first." As she picked up the disastrous cauldron, she sighed quietly to herself. What in the world had the Slytherin girl been thinking? Looking at the other groups continue on successfully, Lucy ground her teeth in frustration. They were behind. Well, not too far behind - the first thing they did was a mistake, so at least they didn't get too far into the brewing process. Okay, this wasn't so bad. They weren't too far behind -- hopefully. This walk was good - it let her expend some pent-up energy. We'll get it this time. She dumped the cauldron into a pile of cauldrons that needed to be cleaned and selected a new one; this one was pewter. I'll make sure of it.

She returned with a standard pewter cauldron and set it on the end of the table, a bit more cheerful now. "Luckily there are spares!" she smiled, forcing herself to be a bit more upbeat than she felt. "Okay, Lizzie, let's look at the directions together. What do we do first?" As she sidled next to the girl, she scanned the page quickly for the ingredient list and directions to get a general idea of how the potion was supposed to work. Ah - it looked like they still had all the necessary ingredients. That was a relief.

"Okay, step one," Lucy started reading aloud, mainly to make sure they all knew what was going on. "Add a Bezoar to the mortar and crush into a very fine powder." She turned to offer a genuine grin to Amadea. "Well, master ingredient prepper, I think this is your chance!" She picked up the Bezoar off the table and held it out to Amadea, looking back at the book for the next step as she waited for her fellow Hufflepuff to take it from her hand.

"While she's doing that, why don't you fill a cup with two measures of the Standard Ingredient, Lizzie? But make sure not to add it until Amadea is done and has added the right amount of ground Bezoar," she cautioned, trying to be explicit in her instructions without being bossy. They didn't have time to start over... AGAIN. Especially since Lucy grabbed a pewter cauldron, their potion would now take ten extra minutes to brew. It's fine. It's fine, she told herself, inhaling sharply through her nose. She decided that while her teammates were completing the first steps, she would figure out the bunsen burner beneath the cauldron. This was her first experience with heating a potion, so she wanted to make sure she didn't mess it up. After all, Hufflepuffs and fire didn't tend to get along. The irritation started to flow out of Lucy as she got to work examining the burner. Once she located the knob to ignite the burner, she turned to check the progress of her team, hope evident in her eyes. We can do this, she said once more, this time believing it.
