Red paint lined the walls of the classroom, illuminated by the high-noon light. The usual deep purple curtains had been swapped for rich red silk ones, painted carefully with characters of good fortune and spring, while the desks had been replaced with large circular tables and cushioned chairs.
Stacks of materials - colored paper printed with golden designs, scissors, glitter and normal ink, tassels, stamps, templates, and more - had been placed each table, clearly not by Cy but by Ceta, judging from the neatness with which they had been arranged. Any student of hers would be familiar with the chaos that probably would have happened if Cy herself had tried to organize the desks by herself.
She had, however, brought out her 古箏,or Chinese harp, enchanted to pluck its own strings, invisible hands trailing notes over each taut wire. Quiet music floated into the high ceiling as Cy conjured cut paper figures of the characters and props of her story - the god, the animals, the rat, the cat - enchanting them to dance across the air, tweaking parts of their movement until she was satisfied, humming along to the harp as she worked.
The watch on her wrist vibrated, notifying her that the time had come, and she hopped down from her perch on her desk, quickly bringing the figures down again. The professor herself was dressed in a black qipao, decorated by red embroidery and print of a dragon winding its way down her torso. Her bright red scarf matched the silk of the curtains in the classroom, with similar characters down the length.
With a flick of her wrist, she sent the decorated doors flying open, setting off the hidden firecrackers she had hidden beside the hinges and most likely scaring the hell out of any students who might have been waiting outside of the door. No matter! It was time. This is a thread for the ERRAND LUNAR YEAR LANTERNS. Only the following students plus the Prefect Griseldis Edelhardt should post in this thread. Entering with @Jack Burnett
Ruka was stuffed from their last meal as he walked towards the Transfiguration classroom with Jack right by his side.
True to his word, the Slytherin had kept close to him whenever their schedule allowed, making sure Ruka was eating properly at least twice a day; and it had helped.
Albeit still pale, the dark circles under Ruka’s eyes were barely noticeable anymore, he had actually managed to sleep a few hours each night at least, and he was pretty sure he had gained a bit of weight since having starved himself for a few days.
Everyone else’s words be damned, Jack was great company and hadn’t shown any signs of wanting anything but the best for Ruka thus far.
So it was no surprise that the unlikely duo showed up outside the closed door to the Transfiguration classroom together; after all it was Jack who had made Ruka sign up for this social activity he would have otherwise avoided like the pest, so naturally the Slytherin had had to make sure Ruka would actually show up as well.
“Are we the first?” Ruka asked his companion with a frown, just as the doors opened to a bunch of firecrackers shooting through the room and making him jump. “Fu-,” he started before his eyes fell on the professor in her curiously embroidered clothes, and he stopped himself from cursing right in front of her, instead opting to smile sheepishly as he entered the beautifully decorated room.
He looked over at Jack, rolling his eyes a bit. “I dare you,” he said, not sounding threatening at all. “I dare you to make even a single joke about me of all people getting scared of firecrackers.”
He knew the other boy well enough by now to anticipate the witty remark he probably had on the tip of his tongue already.
Turning from Jack, Ruka took in the decorations all around them, the beautiful colours and paper cut outs, the gorgeously delicate chairs arranged neatly around a table full of perfectly organised utensils they were probably going to use soon enough.
At the sound of more steps and voices behind them, Ruka shuffled a little uncomfortably, unsure of where to go; the chairs seemed almost too nice to sit down on but standing in the middle of the room probably wasn’t the solution either, so he did what he had been doing for a few days by now and turned back to Jack to wait for him to do something so he could follow the other boy’s lead.

Selim trailed behind the group, avoiding his red-haired dormmate. The drama that had happened over the course of a month made him wary of the fox, despite the fact that the fox was largely the one that got him out of that drama. It was similar to when his nii-san had seen his scars for the first time.
Selim just withdrew when people saw his scars.
He had been avoiding Averill like the plague, whenever crossing paths with the burnett and speaking to him, his tone was always just polite, his first mask (the one the redhead had long since broken through) staying firmly on. He didn't like the boy, he reminded him of his cousins.
He was fine with Arlo though, he was an interesting one, and hadn't really done anything wrong.
Mostly though, he was focused on this little get together. He had never done anything like this before, not in his clan, nor his short time in this school. Though he did like the blind transfiguration teacher, feeling something like a kinship with her, in the vaguest way possible, that is. Her lessons were very lovely too.
Mostly, it had been the idea of practicing calligraphy though. Selim hadn't been doing much of that beyond responding to the letters his butler wrote in kanji, and he always loved the look of chinese lanterns.
He had brought some of his own supplies, a brush and ink, which he had brought with him back from the compound on christmas break, thinking he could practice at school.
He hadn't, of course, but it was the thought that counted.
He didn't exactly know how to make chinese lanterns, but he was willing to learn, he was always willing to broaden his knowledge.
Also it was a good time to discreetly collect info on other students, if he could avoid his dormmate long enough, that is. The fox always seemed to distract him from his other projects. Luckily, it mostly seemed like the redhead was focused on a Gryffindor boy, though he wasn't sure how long that would last...
Sighing, he walked into the classroom right after the door slammed open. He paused though, and raised a brow when firecrackers went off and said Gryffindor boy jumped.
How amusing.
He passed the boy without a second glance as he spoke to the redhead. Upon entering the room, he took in the decorations with an air of appreciation, they made him the slightest bit nostalgic.
When he saw Professor Cypresse, he bowed shortly at the waist in traditional Japanese greeting, despite the fact that she probably couldn't see it.
"Good day Professor." Straightening, he took in her appearance. He tilted his head, setting his stuff down on a nearby table. "A pity, if I had known we could dress up, if we could've, that is, I would've worn my hakama..." He frowned a bit, thinking to his formal attire he brought over for whatever special occasions may happen at his time in this school.
He cast his eyes back to his dormmate and the Gryffindor boy, before focusing back on the professor. "I must say though, the decorations are lovely..." He smiled a bit, though one wouldn't be able to tell if it was fake or not, he had become more guarded since the Paint Fiasco and the Letter.
His mind cast back to the Chinese Zodiac, listing them in his head as he gazed at his surroundings. He favorite, personally, was the year of the snake, which wouldn't be unexpected of him. Though he was born on the year of the tiger, a mere three years before the year of the snake, which was a pity, he supposed.
He was interested to hear some Chinese legends though, despite knowing a few himself (he had searched some up out of curiosity, and to see if any paralleled with japanese legends).
He looked up at the lovely harp, enjoying the pleasant song it was playing, then cast his eyes back to the transfiguration professor.
"What will we be doing first, if I may ask?" He spoke up, politely, but not really in a cold way.
Sitting down on a set, he watched as the other students trickled in, eyes locking onto the fox for a moment, before going back to scanning the decorations.
If the fox bothered him, well, he'd have to deal with him sooner or later, he still had debts to repay after the drama of the month. Mostly he was waiting for the redhead to approach him, but he'd rather not drag on favors any more then he had to. Getting then over with as soon as possible was preferable.
For now though, he'd enjoy the event while it lasted.

Jack was more excited than he'd been in a long time. He wasn't used to spending so much time with someone else for such a long duration, let alone attempting to keep watch over and mother them, but somehow, he wasn't getting bored in the slightest. He supposed Ruka was mostly to blame for all of the above. Ever since he had first encountered the unique Gryffindor, the Slytherin had had no shortage of new experiences.
It was strange and a little frightening at times, but somehow, with Ruka around, Jack felt he could be a great deal braver and mentally stronger than he ever had before. They built off each other in so many ways and it almost seemed like they were unstoppable. After all, no one had really relied on him in the way Ruka seemed to be willing to, so he was especially determined not to let the second-year down.
On his own, Jack also wasn't sure he would have been so interested in Professor Lian's errand except for the rewards it promised. This time, though, he somehow felt a special enthusiasm to join and learn more about the Chinese New Year legends along with the other students. Legends and stories were one of his favorite things to learn, but alongside others, it was bound to be all the more entertaining. That was why Jack had urged both his dormmate, Selim, and Ruka to do the errand with him.
When the he and the Gryffindor stepped into the almost unrecognizable Transfiguration Classroom, Jack was so busy marveling at all the Chinese New Year-themed decorations that he started at the bright, loud, explosive ones that shot off on either side of the entrance. Firecrackers, his brain registered after a moment. Of course. They had been an invention of the Chinese, after all.
Ruka's reaction to the festive devices seemed to have been much the same as his own and Jack had to laugh aloud at the other ginger's dare. "Joke? Why would I joke about that?" he asked, though his attempt to stifle his smile appeared to be failing. "It's logical to conclude that any nut would be frightened by a nutcracker. So it only stands to reason that any Tân would fear a firecracker. Nothing all that funny about what naturally makes sense." He winked at Ruka, unable to hold back his snickers after that.
"But don't you worry, little Tân," Jack went on to say, dramatically puffing out his chest and making a big show of condescendingly ruffling the shorter boy's hair. "I'm here to protect you. Whoa!" He yelped as a small, stray rocket shot off a bit late, forcing him to duck and nearly singing his hair as it whizzed by.
Once he had managed to recompose himself, hazel eyes came to rest on the various utensils and supplies set out on the tables. "Do all errands consist of arts and crafts of some kind or other?" he asked with a wry grin, though the question didn't seem to be directed at anyone in particular. He supposed the castle-decorating errand hadn't exactly been about making anything, but still...it reminded him somewhat of his muggle grade school days.
Feeling Ruka's green eyes on him, waiting to see where he sat, Jack quickly glanced around to find a table for them both. While lingering, he noticed Selim finally bringing up the rear of the group who had entered the room and the redheaded Slytherin's face list up with a devious grin.
He had noticed the raven-haired boy had been keeping his distance from him for a while and he had respected that distance even if he hadn't entirely understood the reason behind it. He had his guesses, of course, but he hadn't thought it prudent to ask the snake for confirmation. For this errand and on this particular day, however, Jack decided to close that distance to what it had been before Selim's personal incidents had occurred.
"Hey, Fangs!" Jack called, tempted to sling an arm around the other boy's shoulders but eventually decided to show some restraint. "Too bad your boyfriend isn't here to do ink painting with you, huh? How are those lessons going, by the way?"
The comment Selim made about wearing his hakama earned a laugh from his dorm mate. "Look around, Fangs. Does this really look like the place you would've felt comfortable wearing a hakama?" he teased. "I know it's probably your equivalent of formal wear, but this is about the Chinese New Year - not Japanese. You're going to confuse people into thinking they're the same thing."
Not bothering to ask, Jack made himself at home in the seat beside the one Selim took up and pulled out a chair for Ruka to claim. "Fangs, this is Tân; he's a second-year. Tân, this is Fangs; a dorm mate of mine. He loves people," the boy added, finally unable to help himself as his arm crept around to pull Selim closer in a side-hug.

A Chinese New Year festival. How cool!
Piérre was sprinting to the Transfiguration classroom, where Miss Lian was sure to be setting up. Piérre knew very little about Chinese culture, but he had done a little research in the library the day he had signed up, eager to learn a little more about the eastern customs compared to his own Mediterranean ways. What he had found out was there were ten years and five cycles of the years, which had different elements assigned to them. Looking at his birth year and comparing it to the zodiac, he found that he was the year of the Rat, specifically the Earth Rat.
It certainly fit Piérre the the dime, though. Optimistic, energetic, mischievous, and always the one to cause a laugh in a group of friends, yet bluntly realistic to the point of being misconstrued as overbearing, Piérre took the year of the Rat and held it close to his heart, alongside his monthly zodiac of Gemini, the two faced twin. Yes, I know his real zodiac is Pisces, but he doesn’t know that yet...
When he made it to the door, he found his group waiting, and a small group of three boys interacting. Piérre made a mental note to talk to them later, and started to bounce in excitement, clapping his hands quickly.

Gryffindor
Today he was wearing red, the color of his house, but also, in a sense, the color of the Chinese New Year. It was considered good luck to wear red in China, so Piérre counted it as another good point about his house. He was also wearing a small, crochet Rat hat, something he had made himself, sacrificing homework and playing hooky to finish.
ReducioThe one on the Left, but with no bows and Pink highlights colored Red
It had almost not been finished by the time Piérre had made it to the meeting place, but somehow he had managed, and here he was, ready for the door to ope_
Suddenly, a loud BANG filled the hallway, causing Piérre we widen his eyes in awe as firecrackers exploded and bright colors filled the air, alongside the pleasant scent of smoke and burning gunpowder, yet another invention of the Chinese. The sound caused one of the boys around him to jump, and Piérre stifled a laugh as he watched the light show. When the smoke cleared and his eyes finally adjusted to the light, he found that the door was open and inside was the completely bedecked out Transfiguration room.
”WOOOOOOOWWWW!” Piérre clapped excitedly once again, causing the tassels on the side of his hat to bounce, ”COOL! Doitagain, doitagain!” He cried out in excitement, begging Miss Lian for another show as the class filtered in. Piérre sprinted in afterwards, when the doorway was a little more clear, but he had to observe the busted up firecrackers on the doorframe and smell the surprisingly pleasant, rustic scent of smoke for a little longer before ducking in.
Getting in the center of the room, Piérre spun around in a circle, letting the colors and sights hypnotize him for a good minute before he lost his balance and fell onto the floor, laughing all the while. ”This is all soooo cool! Haha! Hi Miss Lian!” Piérre waved at the luxuriously red and gold clad teacher, forgetting in the moment that she couldn’t see his shenanigans. ”Can you keep the room like this always?” He asked, bringing his knees to his chest and beginning to rock back and forth as he watched the paper puppets of a godlike being, a, and his own Rat sign floating about in the air.

Ruka snorted at Jack‘s joke, lightly shoving at the other boy‘s shoulder in a weak protest. „That was probably your worst yet,“ he said with a little laugh, rolling his eyes at the Slytherin.
He tried his best to escape the hand reaching to ruffle his hair, but Jack was too quick, and Ruka pretended more to mind the gesture than he actually did, so in the end he just reached up to fix his hair again as well as he could.
He was about to say something about Jack‘s obvious obsession with mussing up his hair, when another firecracker whizzed just past the Slytherin‘s head, making him startle mid sentence.
Ruka laughed brightly, wrapping his arms around himself, eyes squeezing shut in amusement for a moment. „My hero,“ he swooned jokingly, batting his eyelashes at the other boy. „I sure am glad to have you around.“ He cackled, bumping his shoulder into Jack‘s as they looked around the classroom.
For a moment, Ruka thought he could feel someone‘s eyes on him - or maybe whoever it was was eyeing Jack? - and he turned a bit to see a boy around their own age with black hair and pale skin looking in their direction.
Ruka hadn‘t seen him before - if then only in passing - so it was actually no real surprise when he realised that Jack knew who the boy was.
Clearly, Ruka thought, people would be looking at Jack rather than him. Despite all his talk about not playing nice with people and avoiding friends, Ruka had come to notice that Jack was rather well-known among their peers.
Shuffling around awkwardly, Ruka decided just to listen for now as to not embarrass himself with his little knowledge of foreign cultures. Where Jack seemed to know exactly what he was talking about, Ruka had absolutely no idea what a hakama was or what made it different from Chinese traditional wear.
He wondered, briefly, if that may have been the kind of thing he would have learned at school had he attended one before coming to Hogwarts, and he immediately regretted his lack of education.
Maybe it was a good thing Jack had dragged him here; At least he would get to learn something about different parts of the world.
Slightly unsure whether to follow Jack‘s lead or not, Ruka eventually decided to take the seat the Slytherin had pulled out for him, eyes curiously sliding across the boy who had just been introduced as Fangs.
„Loves people the same way you do?“ he asked suspiciously, eyebrows raised in Jack‘s direction. He had definitely learned to take everything the other boy said with a grain of salt, and as far as he could observe Fang‘s general demeanour, there seemed to be a bit of tension between him and the other Slytherin, no matter how much Jack tried to defuse it by wrapping one arm around his dorm mate‘s shoulders.
Despite not completely understanding the two boys‘ relationship, Ruka still offered Fangs a little smile, nodding his head in the pale boy‘s direction. „Good to meet you,“ he said politely, getting distracted shortly by the boy with the Rat-Hat excitedly rocking back and forth as he waited for the Professor to start their Errand.
Ruka rolled his eyes a little at the boy‘s enthusiasm before turning his attention back to Jack and Fangs. „So you are Jack‘s dorm mate?“ he asked the black haired boy, smirking at Jack at the deliberate use of his first name; He knew how much the other boy despised him „wearing it out“. „That has to be quite eventful. I‘ve always wondered what he gets up to once he‘s done embarrassing me for the day.“ He chuckled, nudging Jack‘s shoulder playfully.
Never having met any of Jack‘s... well... friends made him feel nervous, like it was some kind of test he needed to pass in order to stay in Jack‘s good graces, but he figured a cultural errand was the perfect social setting to get to know others without lengthy awkward silences and a complete lack of activities to involve yourself in.
This was definitely going to be interesting.

Alexx was tired, and wanted nothing more than to return to her dorms at once. She wasn't as early to... whatever this was, as some of the other kids, but she was on time to hear and witness the snap! of some sharp firecrackers. That woke her up if nothing else before had. Sleepily rubbing her eyes, she carried herself into the room, blinking blankly at the scene.
What was worse is that she knew no one here. These were all first-years, it seemed. Maybe some were second-years, should couldn't tell. Outside of her own class, she didn't really know anyone. There were a few exceptions, that being her Quidditch team, but she despised the very existence of the second-year Slytherin girls who so foolishly approached her as if they were worthy of her response. Still, with a professor present, she would put up with these kids.
What baffled Alexx the most, despite that this was her own doing, was that she knew nothing about the Chinese New Year. It wasn't as complex as her just not knowing anything about the holiday, because of course, she didn't, it was more along the lines of why she would be here in the first place. Education was the only way to learn about the holiday, but why did she want to? Well, she had hoped that perhaps some of her friends would follow suit and join with her, but she supposed most of them were getting quite busy. Almost all of her friends were prefects now. She despised that.
With the Headliner on a hiatus, she was left with an abundance of free time and no one to even hang out with. It was quite sad; lonely. Regardless, she pressed on, further into the classroom. For a moment, she debated between emerging into the crowd of those who had already gathered, or staying in the back, waiting for this to be over. A big part of her actually wanted to turn around and not do this at all. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and Alexx with it. Sighing reluctantly, she elected to stay.
Moving forward, she eyed everyone again. "Hey," She finally called out, clearing her throat. Briefly, she forgot what it was they were meant to do. Lanterns, or something to do with them? She couldn't recall. She felt awkward, deep down. Alone and confused for the most part, and without knowing anyone else there. "I thought there would be more people..." She muttered in disappointment, narrowing her eyes at the room.
Shuffling her feet, she proceeded, looking around once more, this time anticipating something. She didn't say anything else, though. What was there to say? These were strangers, and ones who clearly knew each other in one way or another. Boys, too. Lots of them. Alexx liked boys for the most part; she had no reason not to. However, she felt a little unnerved by the childish aspect of those younger than her and was cautious with how she proceeded. Far too rambunctious and opinionated for their own good. Better if they kept quiet.

Lunar Year Lanterns
"Hey, Fangs!" Burnett called, "Too bad your boyfriend isn't here to do ink painting with you, huh? How are those lessons going, by the way?"
Selim let out a long, drawn-out sigh. Looks like the redhead had enough of his avoidance. Though he tensed when Burnett got near. He hid it with his usual unimpressed look, shooting the fox a dry glance despite how he had begun subtly scratching at the scar on his arm.
"He's not my boyfriend, Fox. In fact, I'm quite sure i'm aroace." he droned this, not interested in the conversation. "And the lessons are going well enough.'
"Look around, Fangs. Does this really look like the place you would've felt comfortable wearing a hakama?" the redhead teased. "I know it's probably your equivalent of formal wear, but this is about the Chinese New Year - not Japanese. You're going to confuse people into thinking they're the same thing."
"I'd be fine with it, because, like you said, it's formal or festive wear. This is a festivity, I don't just wear a hakama on Japanese new year." he continued to keep his tone uncaring, without a hint of any emotion besides boredom, which hid how unpleased he was with Burnett closing in their space.
The fox then introduced the Gryffindor boy, Selim nodded to him in greeting.
"So you're Jack's dormmate?" Tân shot a smirk at the redhead "That has to be quite eventful. I've always wondered what he gets up to once he‘s done embarrassing me for the day."
Selim shrugged, grabbing some apple cider from his bag, unscrewing the lid of the jar and siping its contents. "He mostly ends up bothering me or some other poor sap." He waved his hand dismissively.
"Also, my name is Selim Faust, not Fangs, that's just a pet name Burnett gives me." He huffed, no playfulness or annoyance in his tone revealed, so it was hard to tell if he was displeased or wry.
His usual playfulness wasn't prevalent due to how guarded he had become after the incident in the showers. He could still act polite with other people, and feign being just fine with other people, but the fox would most likely see through that, and Selim didn't much care if Tân didn't see his polite facade, that was his weakest mask anyways.
"Any particular reason you decided to join me fox? Or are you just deciding to pester me again, as usual?" There was no bitterness in his voice as he asked this, Selim wasn't actually irritated when the redhead came around to... do whatever, but he didn't necessarily always enjoy it either. He was mostly neutral, unless they engaged in a battle of wits. At most, he was mildly amused.
Casually, he rested his elbow on his armrest, propping his head up with his hand, and looking at his dormmate with a raised brow.
He was tense, but he wouldn't exactly reveal it to the world. If the fox noticed, so be it.
