Transfiguration Lesson One
Syrah wasn't too sure what Transfiguration really was. Well, she knew it had to do with changing the shape of something... But how was that different from a simple charms class? Why did it need an entire class of its own. Let alone one she would be taking for a bunch of years to come. As she walked into the classroom she immediately noticed the teacher. He was straight, stiff and gruff, though in a very well-kept kind of way. But he was extremely intimidating, and Syrah wasn't sure if she should admire him or be intimidated by him.
She quickly decided on intimidation by the way the professor started the class. He did not introduce himself, though his near impossible to pronounce name was written on the chalk board behind him. Instead he instantly began the lesson with a very direct question. The very question Syrah was asking herself as she walked to this class. What was Transfiguration? The student's answer seemed to be pretty easily put. Though Syrah would think that the practice would do more than simply make animals objects. Also what was the actual point of that? How was that useful?
When he described the actual definition of the class, it was much more confusing. In her muggle school Syrah had heard a little bit about molecules. She knew they were tiny and made up everything, but that was mostly it. What she mainly thought of her sciences classes was that she didn't like science. Why should she, when she knew magic? She wondered if she would have to end up doing some molecular research for this class. She also hated math, as a side note, and it seemed like this class needed that too. Syrah sighed quietly to herself.
Sergei (she called the professor in her head since his last name was too difficult to pronounce) then went through the classic bout of rules and expectations. She was used to it by now. It seemed most Hogwarts instructors were strict about everything. That could be a bit annoying, but Syrah was a generally quiet and boring person, so she didn't think she would cause any trouble.
She chimed back in though when Sergei mentioned how he graduated from Drumstrag Institute. Syrah's father went there for one year - his First Year - and loved to talk about his 'experiences'. Syrah mostly ignored her father who was simply just trying to amuse and impress. But deep down she was interested in the school and its history. His history, however, easily described his very thick accent. Syrah, thankfully, had no trouble understanding him, which was a leg up on this class since she was pretty sure she was already a leg or two down.

Transfiguration Lesson One
It was a quick introduction to the class and then Sergei was off into the deep realm of Transfiguration. A word which Syrah would definitely need to go back and define on her own, because she was still kind of confused. He quickly listed on the chalkboard four categories of the Transfiguration subject; Transformation, Vanishing, Untransfiguration, and Conjuration. She suppose each of those - except untransfiguration because she didn't know, yet, what that meant - had to do with suddenly changing an object. Whether the object was a person in transformation, a toy that suddenly dissipated in vanishing or nothing becoming something in conjuration. It all had to deal with sight, but also reality since each thing was changed in the real world.
It seemed that Transforming spells in Transfiguration had to do strictly with changing one object into a different object. Sergei carefully and strictly went about some dangers of transformation, from partially transformed animal/objects. That sounded horribly painful and she hoped she would be careful enough not to do that accidentally. She was soon drawn out of that thought by their very interesting professor turning a regular old quill into a fish. At least the example of a quill into a snake a student made a few moments ago made sense, one could kind of see how a quill could be a snake, this example was over the top in skill and show-offy-ness, as Syrah enjoyed calling it.
When prompted, the class immediately asked about the Animagi skill that Syrah had heard about growing up. An amazing skill that lets the wizard transform into a type of animal. Syrah had always dreamed about that, along with everyone other witch her age. But what was interesting is that one student asked a question that made it seem like their Professor himself was an Animagi. No way, Syrah thought and instantly wondered what animal he chose to turn in to. I response their teacher did not deny this assumption, but rather claimed he would show an example in the years to come. It seemed pretty obvious at that point that where was no way Sergei wasn't an Animagi.
He changed subjects quickly by talking about Switching, another sub-category of the Transformation part of Transfiguration. She had never heard this one before and began to struggle with fully understand both the lesson and the field work. It seemed like the wizard had to have an actual target to switch body parts with. Kinda confusing, why would the wizard only want a certain body part? And couldn't they just transform themselves. Surely there was a spell of transformation about here somewhere.

Transfiguration Lesson One
It was a drastic shift from talking about the Animagus to talking about... The alphabet? Wait what? The professor continued as magic began moving the chalk on the babies. Weird symbols appeared with a letter of the English alphabet underneath them. Syrah continued to be confused, but listened to Sergei. Apparently this was the Magical Alphabet. Did wizards write in this? Would they have to write papers in this language? That would take forever to translate each letter. Syrah wondered why this alphabet mattered and why it even needed to exist. Either way she felt like this would definitely be important to Sergei and definitely to the class so she rushedly wrote down the new alphabet in her notes. She really did not want to memorize this. Rote memorization was not her strong point, so this would take a lot of paper in repition. She sighed internally.
To be honest, she didn't even notice that the new alphabet was missing the W until someone else mentioned. She blushed a little, she thought of herself too highly to not be embarrassed about missing that detail. It was interesting though that that was the only missing one. Apparently this was an extremely old system. It was releaving that she didn't have to memorize this whole thing before next class. She wasn't sure she could do that.
Before she knew it, class was over with a swift and stern warning to not attempt any transfiguration spells. The teacher didn't have to tell Syrah twice. She was still overall confused and dissapointed in herself in this lesson. But she would just have to study the book on her own time. This class would be very hard.
