A Tedious Task PV Detention Closed

Place: History of Magic Classroom

Anastasia was a tad nervous about that morning's detention. It was her first time supervising a detention, and she wasn't totally certain how to do it. Sure, she'd managed to get a detention herself in the first week of school, but beyond that, she had no experience with detention. Well, she supposed she'd learn by doing. Not her favorite way to learn, but she couldn't argue that it was an effective method.

She'd asked the new History of Magic professor if she needed anything done since that was one of the only professors she'd actually spoken with outside of class. She'd met the new Charms professor, but she didn't exactly want to go to her about a detention. She'd also met Professor Wright, but she had a lot on her plate as the new Head of House, so Anastasia had decided not to bother her about that either. There was also the fact that if she'd asked Professor Wright, the detention would have likely involved being out in the greenhouse, which Anastasia didn't particularly fancy doing outside of class. Sure, Herbology was one of her favorite subjects, but that didn't mean she wanted to spend her Sunday in the greenhouse just yet.

She glanced at the clock and saw it was five minutes until 7, which was the time the detention started. She wasn't sure exactly what she was supposed to do if the girl was late, seeing as she was already in detention. Hopefully, she wouldn't have to figure that out.

She was rather excited about the task that she'd set for the detention - they'd be reorganizing and dusting all the books. True, it was probably going to be a bit boring, but she liked organing things and she liked books, so she anticipated things wouldn't be too bad.

The door creaked open and Anastasia smiled at the girl as she entered. "Good morning, Miss Windstone," she said brightly. Anastasia was definitely a morning person, although she had no idea if the second year felt the same. "Professor Risa was kind enough to lend me her classroom this morning. Today, we're going to be reorganizing her books by genre and then within the genres, by title. We're also going to be dusting as we go. The Muggle way, of course. Any questions?" She held out a feather duster once she finshed explaining. Here we go, she thought.

Eri had received detention for hitting and breaking a first years nose. It wasn't entirely her fault. He had irritated her, stole her homework, and that was about it. But she warned him and he encouraged it so she broke his nose. Sure she did feel bad about and would apologize to him, after her detention. And no she wasn't dreading it because she did deserve it and it wasn't going to be outside or near any windows had to clean. Hopefully the boy she had punched his nose got healed and was messed up from her fist that would make her feel bad.

She woke up early ready for her detention. She really hoped it was something easy like organization. Anything but cleaning windows. Never again would she clean those filthy windows. It wasn't that she hated cleaning windows, it was that the filthy grime had ruined her clothes and it was kind of gross. But she was trying not to get another detention. That was last year and seeing as things were going, it looked like she was doing one detention a year. And she wanted that streak to stop and have no more detentions for the rest of her school career.

Eri left her common room and headed for the History of Magic classroom. She knew she wouldn't be late cause she hated being late. Though she didn't want to do anything like an essay or work in the green houses all morning maybe another time, just not in the morning. Eri wasn't exactly a morning person. She could wake up easily but would still be tired and could fall asleep at any moment she just hoped that didn't happen when she was in detention. It wouldn't be that fun to to fall asleep and get woken up in detention.

The brunette arrived in the room to be greeted by the Gryffindor prefect. And soon after she found out that they would be organizing books and dusting bookshelves. Eri smiled and happily took the feather duster from her. "No questions." Eri said. Then the girl stifled a yawn and waited for the prefect to tell her where to start. It seemed easy enough organize the books into genres then inside the genres put them in alphabetical order. Something she did at home. And why would she use magic to dust the shelves? She never did at home.

Anastasia was a tad disappointed at the girl's lack of reaction to the dusting and organizing, but she supposed that was partially her own fault for picking a task that she didn't hate. Still, seeing as she was going to be supervising the detention, she wasn't going to make it be something horrid like gardening or cleaning something gross. She supposed, for now, she'd have to settle for tedious as opposed to torturous. She was still mildly traumatized from her own detention in the Greenhouse. A Pureblood Princess like her was less than a natural at weeding. Quite the opposite, in fact. She'd managed to get dirt all over herself, and her three showers the next day still hadn't felt like they'd washed it off.

"You can start on that side of the room," Anastasia told her, gesturing towards the other side of the long classroom. This would be an incredibly interesting task, seeing as the school had the same ghost professor for years who hadn't much cared how the books were organized, then had two different teachers who organized things completely differently before Professor Risa. It was safe to say that they were going to have to start completely from scratch with their organization. First things first though, they were going to have to dust. A lot.

She tried to remember what the prefect in her detention had said about her behavior. She supposed it was her job as a prefect to try to make the Ravenclaw see the error in her ways, and more importantly, make sure she would do it again. It occurred to her that if somebody said there was a detention for fighting, and one person was a first year Gryffindor and the other a second year Ravenclaw, that it would seem obvious who the violent one was.

"So, why did you break that boy's nose?" she asked, after trying to think of a less direct way to ask her. She supposed this worked as well as any other options she might have thought of. It also occurred to her, that, seeing as she had gotten detention for hexing someone in her first week of school, maybe she wasn't the one to lecture a second year about breaking someone's nose. She could think of at least three people who she would like to punch in the face. But she didn't. Because that would be rude and incredibly violent.

The brunette started to dust on the opposite side of the room and started to ignore Anastasia. She didn't want to talk and she didn't really like this first year. It wasn't anything against her and her opinion could be changed, but Eri had feelings about people and her feelings on Anastasia were just a little off. But really it wasn't anything against Anastasia she could be a nice person, but she didn't want to talk to her at the moment.

Eri smirked seeing the disappointment on the girl's face that Eri liked doing this. This would probably be more boring for the prefect than it would be for Eri. She didn't love dusting, but it wasn't boring, because she could just wander into her train of thoughts and completely block out the outside world. Even some things couldn't bother her there.

"I broke his nose cause he asked for it. He stole my homework and nagged me on I warned him. Then he told me show me what you got. And that means punch him so I did. So don't go ahead and give yourself a reason to hate me for it.Cause if you judge a person before you meet them that's wrong." See Eri could be wrong about judging but unless she didn't agree Eri's view on this girl would stay on the non friends side.

Eri then went quiet and let her mind wander. She had a glassy look on her eyes as she mindlessly dusted the shelves with  precision. Completely tuning out everything in the entire world that was happening. Even if Anastasia tried to speak to her she probably wouldn't hear her voice over the loudness of the swirling storm of thoughts in her head. It was a bit overwhelming, but this would help pass time.

Her mind wandered to past memories like why she feared being alone in the woods at night, or her greatest fear of wolves. And it wandered to her best friend Zaire who lived in Ukraine. And to all the good memories she has had with her family and her friends. But also to some of her regrets. She never really sent letters back to her parents cause she didn't understand that they were doing the job they loved and supporting her. She just though they abandoned her and she never wrote back to them. Maybe when she got older and realize what mistake she had made would she correct it.

Anastasia could tell the older girl disliked her, and she brushed past it. It was mostly was she didn't think very highly of a second year who went around breaking people's noses and as such, she didn't care much what the other girl thought of her, and also because she had learned not to care what most people thought of her.

Anastasia frowned when the girl tried to justify the violence. She said it as though any would do what she had done in the scenario. But she couldn't think of anyone who would. Yes, she was a Gryffindor, but that didn't mean she solved every problem with violence. Sure, she wanted to some of the time. Alright, most of the time. But she didn't. Because that wasn't how functioning members of a healthy society conducted themselves. "You do hear yourself, right, Miss Windstone? A bratty first year was teasing you and you punched him in the face?" Anastasia said, trying to keep the judgment from entering her voice. "As for judging someone before you meet them, our meeting consisted of me watching you punch someone in the face, so forgive me if I judge your actions just a bit."

Anastasia sighed. She needed to seem put together, not as irritated as she felt. She saw the other girl's eyes glaze over and bit her lip. Detention wasn't supposed to be daydream time! It was supposed to be a time to contemplate your actions and resolve to behave differently in the future. Neither of which the Ravenclaw seemed to be doing. "Miss Windstone, can you please try to tell me another way you could have handled the encounter?" Anastasia said, her voice as patient as she dared make it. She hoped it didn't sound too patronizing since the other girl was a year older than her at absolute most.

She chewed her lip, rather uncomfortable with the whole situation. She was stuck in a room with a Ravenclaw, who clearly had violent tendencies, who was also clearly rather irritated with her. She glanced back over and grimaced again. The daydreaming simply wouldn't do. "I would appreciate it if you kept the daydreaming to a minimum, as that is not why we are here," Anastasia said, trying to keep her voice relatively patient. She was quite irritated at the fact that she'd had to get up so early on her Sunday morning, and a bit more irritated that Eri didn't seem to feel any remorse for her actions. This prefect thing was harder than she'd thought...

Eri wasn't violent all the time. She could contain it. It was just moments like those that reminded her of her bad past. The way the boy was nagging her on reminded her of someone from the past. When she was younger she was picked on. People could find any reason. They found the reason that her parents sent her to live with her Aunt. Every day she was told she was a mistake, her parents hated her, she wasn't worth their time, and many others. That kind of experience could change a person and it did. Eri had to learn how to fight to make it stop. Every time someone punched her, shoved her, or kicked her, those times played through her head, then finally she got the courage enough to stand up to them and broke one of their jaws an drew was never bothered again.

"Look I can hear myself. I don't resort to violence all the time. I think the main reason I punched him was his nagging brought me back to a bad time in my life. Okay you don't understand me. Nobody does. I was raised by my aunt with my two brothers. Kids can find anything to tease you. Every day wen I was nine at my academy O was teased, shoved, bullied, and beat up. They told me my parents didn't want me cause I was a mistake, or I wasn't worth their time, or I as hated by them or a disappointment. And I thought they gave me up for a better life. They are two famous daily prophet journalists but that year made doubt in my mind about me. I have never seen my parents in person. Sometimes emotions come out. And it's fine think of me however you want. I went and apologized. Don't you think I felt bad? Just don't answer that." Eri took a deep breath and calmed down.

The brunette broke out of her daze and nodded. "Could have walked away. Don't remind me of what happened I know O could have dealt with it better." Then she went back to her thoughts and dusting.

Eri could hear her and she wasn't sat dreaming. Not all of the thoughts or images were happy thoughts and she was looking back through her life. "I'm not daydreaming. I'm reflecting on my whole life. The good times, the bad, my fears, my hopes. I do that when I'm not sure of myself or if I did something I regret."

Anastasia exhaled as the Ravenclaw began talking again. At least she wasn't staring off into space again. That was the goal of detention, right? Get the people to deal with whatever had gotten them in trouble and try to prevent it from happening in the future. As much as she was wary of the older girl, she tried to listen and be relatively open to whatever the girl said. After all, she was hardly one to judge someone else for whatever issues they might have, seeing as she'd hexed someone in her first week at school.

Anastasia barely managed to stop herself from rolling her eyes when Eri said nobody understood her. Didn't everyone feel like that at some point in their life? That didn't mean that everyone went around punching people in the face. Alright, maybe Anastasia in particular wouldn't understand her, seeing as, to the outside eye, her life seemed completely perfect, but there had to be someone else at Hogwarts who would get what Eri was dealing with, right? Anastasia chewed her lip. She wasn't exactly sure what she was supposed to say in response. On one hand, she was a Prefect, and as such, something of an authority figure to the other girl. On the other hand, she was, in fact, younger than her, so she was worried that anything she said would comes accross as patronizing and the other girl would ignore whatever she said.

"Listen, we're both on the same side here," Anastasia said, taking a deep breath. Merlin, that sounded ridiculous. "Maybe you should talk to someone about what happened. A friend, or a professor, or one of us prefects. Because even if it isn't happening anymore, it's still affecting you. And there has to be ways for you to deal with you emotions that don't involve violence." She smiled a bit at the end, so that the other girl could see that she was joking a bit.

She bit her lip again as Eri told her that she wasn't day dreaming. Anastasia bit back a laugh. That was in fact day dreaming. "Well then, I would apprciate it if you kept the reflecting on your whole life for your personal time," Anastasia said, fairly proud of how patient she was being. She was being far more empathic than she normally was. She supposed it was due to the fact that she was fairly exhausted more than her having some profound realization that she should be a kinder person, but she chose to ignore that for the moment.
