It had been at least half an hour since chatter had filled the room; however, now the room was completely silent besides the lesson of the teacher. Some children were whispering, while some were head deep in their notes. Everyone seemed to have a strong opinion about History of Magic. Kids either loved it or hated it, and most of the time one could tell who. If one was impatient and already knew quite a bit about magic history, then they would often be heard complaining in the hallways. They would usually be into more intense things, such as broomsticks. Those who enjoyed it tended to be new to this whole magic thing, and would usually appeared calm on the outside at least.

The thing with Ross was that he was a mix of both of those categories. He was extremely impatient, but knew nothing of the wizarding world despite being a Halfblood. Perhaps that was why Ross found himself not even registering the History of Magic as part of the day at times. This was likely assisted by the fact it was only right in the morning after Breakfast. Sure he was a morning person, but it tended to be difficult to concentrate after one just spent about an hour doing whatever they wished to do.

Still, everyone was relatively new to the class. It only felt like that day everyone was beginning to settle in, and like everyone else so was Ross; however, contrary to most days he had a plan. The plan had taken a night of excitement and about an hour and a half of free time, but it was worth it. He needed something to brighten up his morning just a little so it did not feel like the exact same repetitive deal at all times. He needed variety. Ross found comfort in similarity, but excitement in change.

He was getting a little too comfortable in History of Magic

Sprawled in front of him were the notes he had finished that night about the lesson that was to happen that day. By going ahead and writing them, he felt more comfortable with the most simple plan he had ever thought of.

He reached into the pocket of his simple, black robes and pulled out a horrendously folded piece of parchment, covered in wrinkles from his prior attempts. Anxiously looking back and fourth to see if anybody was looking, he opened the letter just to double check when he was in the clear.

Two Words

Hi! - Sheep

Only two words, and yet they were so exhilarating. It was a rush. In a hurry, he folded it back up again in that same crumpled away and put it on the desk. The ink job itself was his best attempt to be neat, but clearly did not work as well as planned.

He had only chosen the name sheep just in case for some obscure reason he got in trouble for this he could not be entirely linked back to the crime. His house was covered in sheep nick-knacks, and he found himself growing quite fond of him. Clearly the rest of his family did too, but it ensured he had an identity while also... not having an identity.

He was not sure who it was meant for or if it was even worth it, but he felt it was worth a shot. He needed that rush in the morning instead of just a blur of words going through his head as he tried to consider who he was or what was even going on.

Luckily for him, he had chosen a time near the end of class to perform his "master scheme," So he had less of a chance to even get caught. It was like passing notes but outside of class. It was a concept he had only seen in movies, and he was curious to try it out.

Soon enough, class was dismissed and he was left wondering what he would come back to the next day.

That morning, Ross had woken up with his heart thumping with anticipation. It felt as if it was after a rainy day back at home while he hoped the worms may have wiggled their way out of the ground for that short, precious moment. It was like watching the cloudy sky when it was just thirty three degrees, waiting for that drop of rain to fall and gracefully turn to snow from the clouds. It was watching television in the morning when there had been a power outage- waiting for school to possibly be canceled. It was the feeling of knowing something might happen, even if it was unlikely.

He had thrown himself out of bed that morning, and like many mornings in the future he would find himself not even brushing his hair down. Instead, he ran his fingers through it instead and darted to Breakfast. Through Breakfast he could not stop tapping his foot and fidgeting with whatever the Hufflepuff could get his hands on around him as he awaiting class time, and once he knew Breakfast was over he found himself hurrying faster than he thought me might to History of Magic. Perhaps it would at least compel him to be more interested in the class- which was good enough to him.

Before anyone else could set their stuff down, Ross was there first just to check on a stupid note he was not even sure would get a reply. Still, the possibility someone wrote on it remained and that was what made Ross' heart flutter. Possibility was a big factor in the world. Sure there was a possibility a lion could break through the wizarding world walls and steal his flesh, but the possibility was low. Still, it was never a zero percent chance. Ross never really kept this in mind, but his mind was rather drawn to any sort of possibility whether it was negative or positive.

Ross dropped his hefty textbook right next to his desk along with his sloppy notes before snapping his attention to the little crumpled up piece of parchment on his desk.

It was still there

His heart skipped a beat, but he did not. His arm bolted for the note and he drew it in near. Still, he treated it carefully like an injured butterfly. It seemed folded.. different. More organized in some sort of way.

The Hufflepuff opened the crumpled letter with haste, making minor tears n the parchment. Was ecstatic when he saw it

New Words

New Handwriting.

It was someone else.

He got to reading, and his grin found itself widening every word. He had to reply, there was no doubt about it. He reached into his bag that was on top of his textbook and pulled out a quill.

Hi Nyx!

Is it Nyx, pronounced like that river in mythology? I think it's sticks or something. Or like.. Xylophone? Would that mean it would be pronounced Nz?

Anyways, i'm doing fine as can be for someone in History of Magic. Hows it for you?

- Sheep

Confident with his note, though sloppy with handwriting, he confidently folded it poorly once more.

This could be fun.

Amara had a restless night and was even more restless during classes. She was so hopeful that the mysterious Sheep had replied to her. Amara could usually focus in class but instead of focusing, she spent every waking minute trying to figure out who they were. When charms was over and it was time for History of Magic, Amara all but sprinted to the classroom. She threw her bag down at her desk and saw the piece of parchment. It was folded in the same messy style as it was before- this time with a few rips. Amara carefully unfolded it and began to read.

It was the same somewhat messy penmanship and the same yellow ink, but new words. Amara's grin grew as the rest of her class filled in- her look opposing their ones of boredom. Amara got out her book that she should be reading (but is not) and put the parchment inside of it. She got out her white ink and began to write:

Sheep-
It is Nyx like sticks or the Greek Goddess of night. I actually chose Nyx as my pen-name because of the connection I feel to night. And I am doing well thanks for asking. I actually enjoy history but this, this may be more fun. Anyways, why did you choose Sheep?
Yours,
~Nyx

As Amara listened to the lecture- or tried to anyways, she took the parchment and folded it up into a little origami crescent moon. Not the best folding work she has done, but hopefully, Sheep will like it.

As the day arrived once more, Ross had once again rushed to the History of Magic room. It was never too much of an issue for him of course, as the History of Magic room was on the exact same floor of his common room. The floor itself had his two least favorite classes, but at least they were nearby. His schedule was a complete mess when it came to navigating the castle, but it was quite alright with him. As long as he had those breaks in between movements, he could not have cared less. Well, he actually cared quite a bit but it was not nearly as bad as other areas of the school. The place itself was confusing.

Still, he had repeated practically the same exact things that he had done that Monday when it came to it. He had rushed to the room and had nearly tripped over himself several times while he was on his way, but this time his excitement was something entirely different. It was a known excitement. It was being invited to a birthday party, or knowing there was a day off school. It was genuinely intriguing to him, as now he had found his first confirmed adventure in some sort of way.

He had plopped himself in the seat and found the crumpled sheet on the corner of the desk once more. He unwrinkled it in a much more calm manner this time, but still his hands practically shaking from eagerness. The ink was the same white, and in an extraordinarily heavenly handwriting. It was identifiable on the spot, as he had not known of a single soul who wrote the way the anonymous correspondent did. This time he had carried his quill with him, and he wrote his best idea of a reply.
Hi again Nyx!

The goddess of the moon? I've never heard of her. Suppose that makes you a girl, right? Going off a goddess and all.

Sheep actually connects to my heritage! According to my dad and all that his dad was a Shepard. Dad was gonna be too til he met my mum. Now they run a bakery. It was the first thing to come to mind and all.

I appreciate it is not pronounced the other way though. I looked awfully silly trying to say it like that last night and all.[/center]
Say, was that last part creepy? When Ross looked it over with his eyes, he decided there was definitely something off about the way he wrote it. He firmly grasped his Quill once more and proceeded to scratch out the yellow ink. As he did it, he did not even realize he forgot to write an ending for his little letter. Instead, as soon as that part was scratched out he proceeded to fold it up once more.

For the first time since this exchange had started, Amara was able to focus on class instead of Sheep. That being said, Amara still raced to the History of Magic classroom to check for a reply. Before she set her bag down, Amara spotted to parchment and unfolded it quickly. She grinned- basically ear to ear- when Amara saw a new message in the yellow ink. She set her bag down and tried to calm her breathing as she fished around for her white ink. After she grabbed her ink, Amara started to read the note, her grin (somehow) growing bigger.

Hello Sheep,
You are correct, I am a girl, but Nyx is the goddess of the night, not the moon. Artemis is actually the Greek goddess of the moon, maidens, and the hunt. But you are close and it only gets more complicated when you introduce other polytheist cultures.

Anyways, I think that is such a sweet story though, about your family being shepherds. Where you a muggle-born? I only ask because your parents seem to have more muggle centric jobs. To make things fair, my biological father must have been a wizard as my bio mother is a Squib.

Oh, what are you studying right now in History of Magic, I mean if you do not want to tell me so I cannot figure out what year you are in, that makes sense. Lord, I think this is getting long.

Yours,
Nyx
.

Amara read it over and smiled, it was perfect. She quickly crumpled it up and turned her attention to the lesson.

Back in the classroom once more, Ross had not rushed that day. Instead, he had somewhat began to think of it as a morning assignment. Sure, it was exciting and it brought a certain amount of serotonin to his brain; however, he had attempted to reassure himself the letter would still be there. It was not like anyone could take it. If anything, it really looked just like garbage considering the exuberant colors and wrinkles that covered the whole thing. It was reassuring at least.

He opened the note once more, a big grin on his face rising but faltering slightly as he realized the first part was a correction of what he said. Moon, night? What was the difference. One would think if someone ruled the night, then they would rule the moon as well. Then again, the night was not exactly the sky was it? It was a time of day. Ross could only think the girl was decent at astrology, as that was the only thing he really knew of that mentioned moons and such. The boy himself had trouble paying attention during astrology considering it was so late at night, so he could only assume he missed something along those lines. He contemplated informing her of this thought process for a moment, but decided his best option may be to lightly avoid it.

Hi Nix! Nyx!

Well I don't really get it to be real with you, but suppose someone has to!

My dad is a wizard, but my mum is a muggle actually! Dad didn't really tell me much about being a wizard, but I'm unaware of the reason. Maybe it was a rule or something! Who knows. [/center

The boy paused for a moment. What was a squib? He had not really heard of it before. All he knew was that there were wizards and 'muggles' as the kids seemed to refer to them as. It was a completely new experience, but he had never bothered to inquire about the rest of the vocabulary.
He would look stupid if he just pretended to know, and so in a moment of pure confusion and a lack of a thought process he decided to write some more.

Say, what is a squib, or do you have dyslexia or something? If you meant squid, that'd be pretty cool! If my mom was a squid, I bet I'd be way more cool.

I'll spare you the trouble though and just tell you i'm a first year! We had our introduction about a week ago with some soap and stuff! It was really cool.

-Sheep!

The Hufflepuff folded it up with haste and put it back on the corner of the desk. The way he wrote was a contrast to the way he spoke, but he hoped it gave off the same energy. Perhaps he was too weird? There was no time to worry, really. Class would be starting soon anyways.

As Amara reached her desk and started to read Sheep's newest note, she started to realize that she may of come across rude with the Nyx vs. Artemis comment as he never mentioned it. She giggles softly at his comment about squids and how he thought she made a mistake. As she finishes reading, Amara grabs her into begin to write:

Sheep,
A squib is someone who was born into a magical family but has no magical abilities. Usually, their offspring (unless they have a child with a magical being) does not have magic but eventually, the trait re-reveals itself in what we consider muggle-borns. So (sadly) I am not part squid though you are correct, it does sound exciting.

I am also a first-year and while my earlier comment may have made me sound as if value wit above all else, I am actually not wearing blue robes. That being said, I can be a BIT of a nerd sometimes so sorry if I came across rudely. Anyways, how much should we tell each other about ourselves, I do not know if this should be some big mystery type thing. Though, that would be fun. I do have to go, we sadly have a quiz today so goodbye.
Yours,
Nyx
.

Amara quickly crumpled the parchment back up and turned her attention back to the professor.

Ross was as energetic as always. He was a morning person, which made it quite easy for him to respond. It was at his most focused hour, which made things a tad bit easier in about every class besides astronomy. History of magic was no exception, but it was not as if he was going to put as much energy into it as he was responding to the growing collection of words on the parchment he had left only a couple days back.

He had been running through possible responses she could have done in his head, attempting to figure out the best wording in case he somehow managed to upset her without his direct confrontation of the whole "Nyx" thing. It was complicated, and yet he was overthinking it.

He unfolded the parchment once more, beginning to read over the note. He was politely surprised by the fact she was informing him instead of being condescending like a lot of kids would be if he asked such a pathetic excuse for a question. As he read on, he found the revelation she was not a Ravenclaw quite surprising; however, it was motivation for him to jump straight in.

Hi Nyx!

That's a shame. Was really hoping I was talking to an eight-legged thing.

But You don't wear blue robes? I don't really see you as a Hufflepuff much! Must be weird. Say, what floor is your common room then? I bet you can't guess my house! Well, you probably can. Should be fun to try though!

I like mysteries though, so suppose we should keep it there. If we meet, we might not like each other or something. Besides, I like mysteries! I am a master detective, after all.

Well, suppose I just told you a thing about me. So, what's your favorite class

-Sheep

Everything he had said was surprisingly true. He wanted to be a detective, so he supposed he was not a pro yet; however, he would get there eventually he had promised himself at least that. The Hufflepuff smiled at the paper before crumpling it up and putting it back in the corner. Truth was, he had no idea what he was doing

OOC- so i am doing this on my phone in the car rn so it is going’s to be bad but i will go back and edit it later. it will have to same idea though so you can respond before i edit it.

Amara burst into the History of Magic classroom and was there before anyone-including the professor. She ran over to her desk and saw the crumpled parchment. Amara imminently unfolded it and started to read. She smiles at Sheep’s mention of her not being a squid and rolls her eyes at his comment about her not being a Hufflepuff. Amara may admire them, but she’s no where near being one. When she finishes reading, Amara grabs her ink and quill and almost starts to write before realizing there is not any more room on the parchment. She grabs a fresh piece of parchment and begin to write as her peers start to file in.

Sheep-
Even though I am not part squid, I still could have eight legs... but do not worry, I don’t. And this may make it pretty easy to guess my house because I am part of the only house that’s common room is in the dungeon. If I had to guess for you, I would say that you are a badger or maybe an eagle.
But making me choose my favorite class, that is just down-right cruel! I would have to say Charms though. I also think we should keep this as a mystery though. Keep asking each other questions that cannot give away our identities while still getting to know each other is fun. What is your favorite class though, I just told you a ton of stuff about myself.

Another day another letter and another week another Friday. The weekends at Hogwarts were always such a rush to Ross, as it was simply a time to explore. There was so much to do, and it was like there were practically no limits. Still, Ross could not help but feel upset he would not be able to read the letter in response for two more days at least, so he felt he should make this one count. He had been thinking about it for a little while. How could he make the most of the message? He only had about five minutes at the start of class, tops. Perhaps he should just make the most of it.

As he sat down at his little desk, he picked up his quill and began to write.
Hi Nyx!

So you're a snake! I haven't really met any snakes yet. I don't really even know what they do. It sounds sorta sucky to sleep in the dungeons. Do you have to sleep on stone slabs? But yeah, i'm a badger! Our common room is like the smell of baked cookies on the weekend, let me tell you! If you go in, you never want to leave. It's a shame you can't. It's the best place in the whole entire school!

Also, I like charms too! I also like transfiguration, but charms is actually hands on so I like it better! I hate that poxy potions class though. It's soooooooooo confusing!

So to keep things a mystery, I got an idea. What will you do be doing this weekend? I won't see this until Monday, so I won't know a thing. Also, what is your wand core? I dunno anything about it, but it'd be cool to know. Also, what's it like being raised knowing you're magic!

-Sheep
Ross felt it was good enough, and he finished it in the nick of time as well. This time, he was more gentle about putting it in the corner again, ready to proceed with the class period once more.
