Good Grief...
November 10th, 2018
Amanda was generally a good student. Her report card was always filled with mostly O’s and E’s. But there was one class where she struggled immensely, and that class was Herbology. Amanda was well aware that she didn’t have a green thumb. That didn’t bother her. What bothered her was the fact that she had quite a bit of trouble passing Herbology.
“Crap,” Amanda muttered when she discovered that she was wasn’t following instructions correctly for the second time that day. She looked around the classroom to see if there was a student who could help her. Amanda spotted a red-headed girl sitting a few seats away who looked like she knew what she was doing. Amanda was almost positive that the girl’s name was Frost, but she wouldn’t have bet money on it.
Amanda stood up and walked over to the girl, carrying her plant with her. She sat down in an empty seat that luckily happened to be right next to the girl. “Hi there. Your name’s Frost, correct?” Amanda continued without waiting for an answer. “Could you help me? I honestly have no idea what we’re doing. Herbology definitely isn’t my strongest subject.” She grinned at Frost. “You look like you know what you’re doing, though, so I thought that I’d ask you for help.”
“Oh, I may be on the side of the angels, but don't think for one second that I am one of them.”

Good Grief...
Herbology was one of the girl's stronger classes. Truth be told, Frost wasn't really all that smart. But Herbology class was one that she could easily understand. It was often said to her that she had a certain something for growing things and just nature in general. It just always seemed to be calling her name. And it was everywhere. Plants grow everywhere, even on streets, there was always a touch of green. So what reason did she have to not accept that she liked nature, and very much so?
So it was only fitting that a nature lover was good in a nature-based class. The class was full of mostly happy students, save for a few salty kids and some who weren't passing in the class. Frost simply didn't understand how one could hate the class or do badly in it. But then again, she did know that people were people and everyone is different. The redhead hummed a song to herself while keeping herself occupied with the work.
The chatter in incoherent voices made good ambient background noise. In classes, usually, the redhead stuck to herself. She already knew that she could focus more on schoolwork and grades, so at the start of Second Year, she promised herself that she would work a little harder. And if that included not talking to friends during class unless absolutely needed, then that was that. Taking down some notes, Frost turned her head to look at the other paper. But the sudden girl that wasn't there before frightened her. She tried her absolute best to not let it show that she was spooked.
"It's Frost ye-" She started but the other continued to speak without her answer. The Hufflepuff stared at the girl's plant and then the girl. She could've sworn that she knew her from somewhere. Maybe seen a couple of times. Amanda was the name she remembered the face as. It was hard for Frost to forget a name and a face, especially if they had met more than twice. The girl beamed at the brunette, stopping her own work to help out Amanda. "Well of course I can help!" She returned the girn she gave her. "I'm glad it looks like I know what I'm doing." Laughing, she scratched the back of her neck. "Is there anything in particular that you need help with?"

Good Grief...
Amanda let out a sigh of relief when Frost agreed to help her. She hated it when she got rejected, especially by those rich, snobby girls who tended to attend these types of schools. “Oh, thank goodness. I’m just plain awful at Herbology and most plants that I touch don’t live long afterwards.” She laughed. “I think that I must have heard the professor wrong because I don’t think I’m doing what everybody else is doing, let alone doing it right.” Amanda paused to glance at the plant before her, which didn’t look too healthy compared to Frost’s. “Why don’t you just start by telling me what you’re doing? Maybe then I’ll be able to put the missing pieces together from there.”
While Amanda wasn’t the most skilled on the block at dealing with plants, she did like them immensely. They could bring a touch of life to even the most barren areas. Back home in Kent, Amanda’s mother kept a little flower garden in the backyard, filled with everything from peonies to forget me nots. Their house was always filled with fresh bouquets, as Alice Sparrow loved flowers and was one of the top students in her Herbology class at Hogwarts. But unfortunately, Amanda didn’t have her mother’s talents and was, in fact, the exact opposite when it came to dealing with plants.

Good Grief...
A bubbly little giggle escaped the red-haired girl. She absolutely loved being able to help someone with anything. Being usually not very useful or able to give help, it felt nice to be asked for help. "Yeah, no problem! You're doing great, don't worry. Maybe you just misunderstood?" Frost was not very good at telling someone that they did something wrong. Especially since in her mind, there wasn't really such thing as doing something wrong. But in Amanda's case, there was not much that she could say about that.
Some people were just not suited to be good with plants, and that was okay. Being good with plants didn't change anything, just a little bonus type thing. Delicate fingers pointed to the paper with her notes, "If you'd like to read that then you're free to do so. I just do what I've written down, but make sure to do it with love." Frost believed that plants need love just like any other living thing, even that it helps them develop better if they were loved. If the person actually cared for the plant, it would grow nicely. Well, at least that's what worked for her. Though she has been deemed a 'green-thumb' and plant care just came naturally to her, the Hufflepuff knew that everyone could do it just as well.
With a tilted head, Frosty checked on Amanda's plant. "Maybe a bit less water? Don't want to drown the poor thing." Though she was no plant expert, it seemed like that was a good idea. The little pool of muddy water building up in the pot was proof of that. "Anyway, what did you name it?" She had asked as if everyone named their plants like she did.ReducioAck! Sorry this is like- super duper late and kind of icky xD

Good Grief...
Amanda was glad that she had asked Frost. There was something about the redhead that seemed to brighten the atmosphere. "Yeah, maybe I just misunderstood." She shrugged and grinned.
Amanda's gaze followed Frost's fingers to her notes. She nodded in understanding and picked up one of the pages, scanning it. "Alright, thanks. This is such a huge help." She began to follow the notes, careful to double check everything that she did. When Frost mentioned going light on the water, Amanda winced. "Oh, that's probably it. I thought we were supposed to douse these things as much as possible." She glanced inside the pot at the flooded soil. "Yup, you're right. Way too much water."
Frost asked Amanda what she named her plant and Amanda wasn't sure how to respond at first. "I- were we supposed to name them?" She glanced between the two plants. "Is that something that people normally do? I wasn't aware of that." A small giggle escaped her. "Well, I might as well name it. I don't see why not." Amanda looked her plant over, trying to think of a good name. "Hm, let's see... how about Alfred? Maybe Al for short?" She laughed and pretended to use her quill as a sword. "I hereby dub thee Sir Alfred the plant." She turned and smiled at Frost. "Did you name yours?"

Good Grief...
A graceful smile grew across the girl's lips, touching her eyes. "No worries, it usually is just the water. Easy fix." She glanced at the muddy puddle of water and made a sort of 'hm' sound. Yes, this dear girl was in fact what some would call a 'plant mom'. Perhaps it was her gentle nature or her odd way of thinking, but she had always seemed to have a special connection with nature. Not anything too crazy like making the plants grow on command, but she was able to keep plants alive and alright. Never except for once did she let a precious plant die, and that seemed like something to be proud of.
Frost shrugged her shoulders, letting out a giggle. "Nobody said we had to," Hazel eyes met with Amanda's brown ones as she still kept her gracious smile. "But I think that plants just need love and naming it is just the first step to it." Such a 'Frost' thing to say. But hey, maybe it was true. After all, almost all of her gardening adventures did go as planned. Though she did find it quite nice that in nature, frost often preserved flowers so they lived longer. It was just something she liked to remember.
"Of course I did!" Alfred was a great name, it reminded her of Alfred from batman. The hufflepuff would hold up her own green plant to show her. "I've named him Bellsprout. Like from pokemon." It just made sense at the time. And who didn't appreciate a name that referenced another thing?

Good Grief...
“Bellsprout, huh?” Amanda grinned. “I love Pokémon! I play Moon all the time when I’m at home.” She tilted the pot over and poured most of the excess water into an empty watering can. “What do you think about the newer Pokémon? Personally, I’m not a huge fan.” Amanda set the pot back down and glanced at Frost’s plant, comparing the two. “Yikes, mine still doesn’t look so hot Do I have to wait a bit or something?” Geez, I need to pay more attention in this class. She sighed quietly and decided to let her plant sit untouched for a bit.
“So, tell me a bit about yourself or whatever,” Amanda said, attempting to start a conversation. She hated sitting still and keeping quiet. Over the past year, talking had become her favorite thing as she was launched out of her introverted shell. She subconsciously wiggled around in her seat a little. “I’d like to get to know you better since you seem really nice.” She shrugged casually and picked up her quill. Amanda dipped it into the ink and began to draw swirly designs on her forearm, stopping every so often to dip her quill in the ink again.
