Lesson One - Herbology Closed

Syrah was a bit early to her first Herbology lesson. She was actually already outside on the Grounds before class, as the weather was extremely pleasing that day. Syrah, coming from the bustling city of London, enjoyed the change of scenery with the rolling hills and forests and the ability to see the sun set behind the horizon. She tried to be outside as much as possible, especially since her Slytherin home was underground and very dark.

As she approached the greenhouses, she started, unsure which one she was supposed to enter for her class. That was until she took a slightly closer look at the buildings and found one that stood out among the rest. Syrah wasn't too much interested in Quidditch, but clearly the Herbology professor was. Specifically, it seemed, they enjoyed the Gryffindor team the most. Banners and numerous other decorations adorned the green house, almost all sporting the red and gold of the Gryffindor House. Although the professor clearly had a bias to Gryffindor concerning Quidditch, Syrah simply hoped that they didn't have a bias when it came to teaching.

As she entered, she was immediately hit with a strong smell of dirt. Looking around, a center table drew her attention first, as it was covered in a wriggling plant. It looked like the stems were testicles waving around in the air. Syrah has never seen any magical plants and this was quite a surprise.  She spotted a bench up against the greenhouse wall and decided that would be a good place to wait for class to begin. Heading over there she twisted and leaned in order to avoid touching the plants reaching out towards her.

The Professor was already here, though she didn't seem to notice Syrah enter, and Syrah didn't feel like making herself known. So instead she waited and watched the teacher as other students began filing in. The professor seemed interesting, though Syrah was most concerned with the large owl perched calmly on the woman's shoulder. Syrah wanted an owl so bad and had become jealous of her teacher.

Soon enough class began and the teacher turned to introduce herself and get on with the lesson. As Syrah listened she noticed Professor Trollope seemed rather dramatic, referencing to lose of House points and even death very casually. But soon enough she moved to the table with the weird plants. Syrah got up and pushed her way to the front to get a good view, just barely managing to duck out of the way of a tentacle.

Syrah really wasn't imagining it when she thought this teacher was dramatic. Apparently the very first plant she shows a shiny brand new first year class is one that could literally kill. It was called the Devil's Snare, which made sense, but Syrah thought it sounded more like a snake with the whole strangulation thing. Looking at her other classmates down the table she noticed a couple more ducking out of reach and one pale looking kid actually bat one away with his hand and took a small step back. Before Syrah even realized it, though, it seemed as if the Professor was going to teach them a spell! In Herbology? Syrah was shocked. She thought this class was simply going to be learning about weird plants and how to use them as poultices or something. But apparently magical creatures and other wizards are not the only thing witches fight, plants are a danger too.

She watched in awe as their strange Professor out her hand directly into the reach of a much larger, and apparently much more dangerous, Devil's Snare. But she stuck her hand right in, no fear and waited for a moment to be totally engulfed. Then BAM, fire shot out of her wand in a dazzling manner, streaming like water from the tip. The plant instantly retreated all the way into the earth in the pot, letting go of the professors hand  as it left. One could almost see the thing scream as it fled. Of course it made no outwardly sound, but the action and feeling were clear. The fire itself was fantastic. It looked completely real. And as Syrah thought, this spell was not just for countering this plant. Fire had so many uses and this spell could be manipulated for numerous reasons. Syrah finally had a spell she could use during dueling!

Thankfully, after her brief performance, Trollope allowed the students to begin practicing the spell. Each student, including herself, rushed to claim their own Devil's Snare. Syrah was luckily already by the edge of the table and had quickly claimed her own. She held the plant by the pot, making sure everyone knew it was hers, and would try and avoid the tentacles and much as possible. She didn't quite know the spell and so couldn't yet free herself if she got captured.

Once everyone seemed to get settled and the greenhouse died down, Syrah closed her eyes. The incantation's pronunciation was not too hard. She heard it in her mind clearly. "Incendio." Yes, it was not difficult. She muttered it a few more times, just to make sure. But after a second she felt fairly confidant with that.

Although the spell - shooting fire out of the wand - seemed tricky since it seemed dangerous, Syrah thought it didn't look too hard overall. The incantation, which she already had down, was simple and the wand movement was simple as well. In fact there wasn't any wand movement really. One just had to point it in the right direction.  Taking a deep breath Syrah lifted her hand and pointed her long wand at the middle of the plant. Very quickly, before she even had a chance to ready herself, the plant grabbed her wand. Thankfully she was holding onto it pretty tight and she panicked instantly, retching it away. Her response was quick enough that the plant didn't have enough time to grab on too tight and so she was able to free it.

Chuckling to herself, she now had a bit of adrenaline pumping. She took a few more breaths, trying to steady her heart rate before trying again. She pointed her wand once more, farther away this time, but still pointing at the direct middle of the Devil's Snare. "Incendio!" She exclaimed. But nothing seemed to happen. She thought for a second that the tip of her wand glowed, but it was too quick for her to tell if she was simply imagining it or not. She tried again.

"Incendio!" Once more nothing seemed to happen for a moment. Maybe she was just being impatient. But a millisecond later she definitely saw some light at the tip of her wand and the wand itself seemed almost warmer in her hand. She smiled lightly. She just need to practice more.

As class went on, the spell became more and more pronounced, but she wasn't quite yet shooting out a full stream of fire. She wasn't too worried though, she thought she was making very steady progress and to her that was successful. She would practice more when she got the chance. She couldn't wait to use this in a duel!
