The assignment seemed simple enough. From now until end of term they were paired up and then expected to plant seeds, aid the plant into a seedling, and then help it grow. They were expected to tend to the plants needs each and every Herbology class, as well as any other time as needed.

Alina looked down as she was handed her paper. It didn't say which plant she had (that was part of the assignment, to identify your plant) but it did say the name of her paired partner. Wyatt Starkey, Slytherin. She glanced around the room until she spotted him. She knew of the boy, at least to put a face with the name, but she hadn't spoken to him. She also wondered if he knew her identical twin sister Bella, as she was a fellow Slytherin of his.

Once all papers were passed out to the remaining students, they were asked to pair up. Alina didn't like sitting so close to this obnoxious girl who kept talking about the most mundane things so she got up quickly, gathered her bag and notebook, and approached her Slytherin partner.

"Hi," she said, setting her notebook down next to him. "I'm Alina. Alina Rosier. Looks like we're working together." Working together, stuck together,- making a friendship or an enemy - time would tell how the two of them would get along.

Alina Rosier, Hufflepuff, it’d said. He wondered why the name sounded so familiar, but he didn’t have time to find out why, as a Hufflepuff girl hastily put her notebook on the desk, and taking a seat next to him. She didn’t seem to be in a rush to start their assignment, but she was definitely in a rush to get away from something. It was likely it was whoever she’d been sitting next to, but he only thought this because his previous desk-mate was an extremely annoying Gryffindor who wanted nothing more than to talk about himself, all while passively putting down Wyatt.

"Hi, I'm Alina. Alina Rosier. Looks like we're working together."

Alright, strange start. She said it with a tone that implied she was not exactly thrilled to be here, maybe because Herbology was a painfully boring class. Alina looked remarkably similar to a Bella Rosier, but assuming (since they’re in the same grade, look the same, and have the same last name) that they’re twins, isn’t that how it’s supposed to be? He decided not to ask Alina if she was related to another student with the same last name since they were supposed to be working.

“Right," he said. "Wyatt Starkey,” he introduced himself with a monotone voice, and he wore the mask he always did, expressionless. Not that it mattered. It wasn’t like she was forcing him to talk to her like friends or anything. They just had to choose and identify seeds and care for what grows, they had an assignment. He opened his Herbology textbook, just wanting to find the easiest plant to grow and earn an easy O.

Asphodel. Asphodel was just a plant. It didn’t bounce around or yell, so it seemed easy enough. All they’d do is water it, and it would grow, and boom. Easy O.

“We can grow Asphodel. It seems simple. Once we’re done, we could donate it to the new potions professor, since it’s used in a myriad of potions. Easy O, and good for first impressions.”

He wasn’t very good at "teamwork". Wyatt never had the experience. Whenever he was given the option, he chose to work alone, himself being the only person he could trust.

"I like easy Os..." she hesitated because, well, Os weren't easy! Not for her. She glanced over to him and thought how even the Slytherins thought school was easy. Bella surely got better marks than she did. Either Hogwarts was full of intelligent people or there was something wrong with her.

She pushed that thought aside and looked to the book. "Let's just hope being a flower associated with death isn't bringing us any sort of foreshadowing," she attempted a small smile to the Slytherin. She knew a little about ancient mythology and how the Underworld had a field of aspodelus flowers. Elysian Fields.

"Does it show a picture of the seeds? Says they are triangular and dark brown or black, 0.32 centimeters long. I'll go get the planting supplies and you gather the seeds." Alina then got up from the worktable and to the back of the room to the supply shelves. She gathered up soil, a large pot, and a shovel. She knew she wouldn't be able to carry all supplies back at once, so she took these things to place at their workstation and went back for a watering can which she filled with some water, grabbed two books that might be related to their topic, and returned.

She looked through the books to find asphodel and skimmed over the section when she found it. The first book described it as slow-growing...and she wondered if there wasn't something that could be done for that, something that could encourage the plant to grow faster. This was something she made a quick note of in her notebook. Something to perhaps research later.

"I like easy Os…"
“Good,” he replied, simply.

Wyatt heard the hesitation in her voice but decided not to bring it up. He knew nothing about Alina and didn’t know how she’d react. Besides, if she really had an issue with Asphodel, she would’ve asked to change it.

"Let's just hope being a flower associated with death isn't bringing us any sort of foreshadowing," Alina said with a small smile. A smile didn’t look good on Wyatt’s face. It was either because he frowned so much it looked strange to him and everyone else, or because he didn’t know how to smile at all, so he never did.

“Yes, I’m sure the flowers will decide our fate.” His words were laced with sarcasm.

"Does it show a picture of the seeds? Says they are triangular and dark brown or black, 0.32 centimeters long. I'll go get the planting supplies and you gather the seeds."

A thought crossed his mind (about the fate comment) as he walked to where their professor kept the seeds. This is why people don’t like me, huh. The left side of his mouth turned up to make a small, tight smirk, but he fixed his face to show an expressionless boy shortly after the smile was formed.

He opened the doors of the little seed cabinet and looked through. Their professor had taken all the labels off of the seeds, just to make it more difficult. It would prove to be more difficult on himself though, since he had to put the labels back on later. Wyatt made a small laugh at the un-labeled seeds. It was easy to spot the Asphodel. There was only one box of seeds that matched the description of dark brown or black and triangular. Many strange shapes, but few triangular, and few dark colors.

He forgot one thing- how many seeds did they need? He decided, whatever, and ended up bringing 3 of the triangular seeds back to the table.

“I hope three is fine.”

"One's the loneliest number...two's a couple, but three...is a party!" she smiled but glanced down. Wyatt reminded her of some of the other students she had met who just didn't want to allow themselves to have fun so surely he probably didn't appreciate the the comment.

She cleared her throat and thought he was probably thinking what Rose Moon had upon first meeting her - that she was a complete idiot. Shaky with grades, yes. Complete idiot, no.

"I mean, three should be sufficient," she looked back up and opened up the bag of soil before filling the pot up with some. Once she was finished she began to close the bag up and looked around at the class to see if they were about where they needed to be but it seemed they were slightly ahead with Wyatt's quick decision on asphodel. Some where still leafing through books trying to decide their plant and others were close behind, doing the dirt. It wasn't that she needed this to be a competition, she just worried about falling far behind but no. They were the group slightly ahead.

Some of the girls seemed to worry about the dirt, trying all they could not to get it on their precious little hands. As if it didn't wash off. Alina hated that sort of thing, although was quite sure her sister would have done the same.

"One's the loneliest number... two's a couple, but three... is a party!"

“We’re both talking about seeds, yes?” The girl was personifying seeds. Seeds. She was strange. Intriguing, but very strange.

Is one a lonely number, he thought. Wyatt liked being alone, and he never felt lonely by himself. He just needed his space… all the time. People weren’t that kind to him in the past, so he never bothered with making new friends.

He wondered if Alina thought he was just another rude Slytherin, but the way she hastily corrected herself made Wyatt think she had something else on her mind.

"I mean, three should be sufficient."

Wyatt nodded. When he looked over at Alina, he saw her pouring the dirt with an annoyed expression. Looking up to see what she’d been looking at, he saw two groups of Slytherin and Hufflepuff girls desperately trying not to get their hands dirty.

These girls, though, were not as dim as the boys. There was a group of two Hufflepuffs. One, the boy, was literally tasting the dirt, while two, the girl, tried to smack his hand out of his mouth.

Wyatt wore a disgusted look.

The boy noticed Wyatt staring and took his hand out of his mouth immediately.

There were definitely pros and cons of having a rumour (that you practice dark magic and your family worships the dark lord) sweeping the school. Kids were now afraid to look him in the eye, and he was getting bullied much less.

The cons were that you can’t talk to anyone without hearing the shakiness in their voice, which isn’t great for group projects. It gets awfully annoying. Alina though didn’t seem awkward about it. Well, she definitely seemed awkward, but not scared.

As she was still placing dirt in the pot, one of the other students came by with a sheet of paper that had them list out some of their findings during this experiment. One was taking their plant to get some fresh air vs. the greenhouse and providing music to see if it grows better.

Alina whipped off her hands and looked down at the paper confused. "What in Merlin's name... So we have to take it on a field trip to the lake or something and provide it with some music?" She thought about some of her Hogwarts classmates and how they could play the piano or the violin, how they were part of the Frog Choir or took time in the ballroom to practice their voice. She had none of those skills.

"This is a little crazy..."
she noted and glanced back over to Wyatt, curious to know his thoughts. Crazy or not, it was part of the assignment so it really wasn't as if these first years had much of a choice. "Next we'll have to invite it over for afternoon tea on a weekend or attend one of the quidditch matches dressed up as a fan." Okay, maybe that was going a bit far...but this wasn't the usual assignment of just growing a plant. It was starting to feel more like babysitting a plant.

“Music? I thought this was going to be a simple project,” he said, his tone carried a hefty amount of annoyance and frustration. He’d be spending a lot more time with Alina than he cared to. This was not explained in the lecture!

“Why the hell would music do anything to a plant anyway? I don’t think asphodel has ears,” he mumbled. He brought a lot of his records to Hogwarts, so he settled on playing those for the plant. He’d much rather do that than play it anything on his guitar and risk people knowing he actually has talent. Who needs to know that?

Wyatt rolled his eyes at Alina’s comment about taking their plant for tea, not because it was childish or stupid, but because it was true.

“Or maybe we’ll name it and teach it to ride a bike.”

This was such a waste of time. Muggles could grow asphodel! And they did, didn't they? Wyatt didn't know much about plants, but he knew a few things. Things like how plants just need water and sunlight to grow, how difficult could that be? Not very.

That is, until you start asking ridiculous questions like if I play music, will it grow faster?
Scientists were lunatics.

“What is the point of all this? What happened to water a plant and watch it grow?”
Wyatt sighed. He had a feeling this project would take a lot longer than he wanted it to.

"Probably couldn't think of an assignment and wanted some busy work to keep students occupied," she guessed. After all they knew that plants needed water, sunshine, and such since younger years.

Alina then laughed, "think about that...flower pot on the seat and it's little vine like stems reaching out for the handlebars of a bicycle..." she elaborated on Wyatt's thoughts. It was a crazy scenario.

She then stopped and cleared her throat after getting a couple looks from nearby classmates. "Alright, so you do the watering," she glanced to the watering can she had collected from the supply table. "And when do we want to do the music thing? I'll fit it in any time." She didn't have quidditch or ballet club or anything like that some of the other students at Hogwarts had. She didn't know about Wyatt. All she really knew about him were some of what she had heard around school and honestly that didn't bother her too much because of her family descent.

True or not, it didn't really matter to her. What mattered to her most was that she wished Wyatt could be the type of boy to smile now and again and have a little fun there at school. For her, that was her priority at Hogwarts. Life was tough enough at home.

"Probably couldn't think of an assignment and wanted some busy work to keep students occupied."

“I suppose that makes sense, but why can't they be creative? All these stupid rules and things to do with it. We'll have to teach the little asphodel it's ABCs. Or maybe we’ll name it and teach it to ride a bike.”

"Think about that...flower pot on the seat and its little vine like stems reaching out for the handlebars of a bicycle..."

“Hm.”
Wyatt conjured a small, crooked smile... mainly to show he was listening. He thought he'd been a little dismissive towards Alina. Dare he say, he felt... bad?

"Alright, so you do the watering. And when do we want to do the music thing? I'll fit it in any time."

“I can help with the music, too, if you'd like.” Wyatt was surprised he even said that. He didn't really like the girl, she was just too odd. He did think she was nice, though, so he wanted to at least help a little bit.

“Is there anything else they'd want us to do?” The Snake immediately regretted asking, since he feared the answer. He was sure there'd be more bogus rules on that list that he'd be forced to follow to get an O.

Another odd thing, why did Hogwarts insist on using O, E, A, P, D, and T to grade? A, B, C, D, and F worked just fine in muggle schools, and it made sense. Well, it sort of made sense. Why didn't they include E?

I'm so incredibly sorry for the (very, very, very) late reply, but I've just been stressed out with having to write so much, and taking a mini-break felt really nice. I can't wait to get back to writing threads, especially this one.
