There was never a task too tedious if it had to do with plants. The rewards for even the smallest bit of work were so grand, that it seemed like no errand at all. Not to mention the sweetly fragrant air. It was the smell of life.
It was nearly impossible for Flash to be in a bad mood in the greenhouses. The effect had only grown stronger with familiarity, as though it were a home away from home. He loved the greenhouse in the Room of Requirement, but something about it just didn’t feel completely real. He knew it was made by magic, though if there was any actual, concrete difference from a real plant and the ones in the Room, he couldn’t tell.
Perhaps it felt like those plants hadn’t earned the growth they represented, they didn’t have a history. Was something that came out of nowhere really real, even if it was corporeal?
Flash’s mind always wandered to irreverent thoughts such as that when he was surrounded by nature. Daydreaming again. He was working on organizing all the herbs the first years harvested into separate containers with Alan Vanes, his third year Gryffindor friend.
He was happy to be approached about helping him for once, since their relationship thus far had been particularly one-sided. It hadn’t been carefully crafted to be so, but simply was. Flash had tried to affect an opinion of himself onto Alan, but despite what he said or how he acted, Alan’s opinion of him didn’t seem to change.
If he were being honest with himself, he didn’t know much of anything that went through Alan’s head. They rarely got to have a conversation without being interrupted. He remembered he had been trying to talk about Alan’s family before, during Willow’s Quidditch match, but with Hufflepuff having such a swift and decisive victory, there was very little time to do anything but celebrate.
They had been silent for a while, Flash’s attention having drifted off into nonsense. He wondered whether Alan preferred the silence, or wished he would speak. There was only one way to find out.
”Alan, would you mind if I asked you a bit about yourself? I feel like I barely know anything about you.” Flash’s voice was light, like a gentle hand on the shoulder. ”Let me think. You like candy a lot, you want to be a magizoologist, and you’re always there when I need you.”
Flash could say a lot more, but in his experience, people didn’t like that he knew so much about them. It was seen as threatening, for some reason.
”Why is it you want to be a magizoologist then?”

The third year liked plants; he liked nature in general. But he was confused with all of the names, especially with most of them being Latin. So here he stood trying to sort dried herbs into the place they belonged, small boxes with labels to keep the moisture away from the plants so that they wouldn't go stale. It was confusing, really way, with all the names sounding similarly difficult. He was flipping through the lexicon of plants to find them and their names so he could sort the flowers and herbs into their designated space. It was a slow and tedious process, because it was definitely not one of Alan's specialties and yet he had offered to volunteer in helping the professor, because he liked the subject a lot.
So when he caught sight of Flash who probably took a walk or something, he called out for his friend in the hopes that he might offer to be of assistance, if Alan would let him know about his troubles to organize these plants and weeds. How glad he was, when the younger student had no hesitancy to jump to his assistance, once the Gryffindor had mentioned it and volunteered as well to give him a hand.
Sorting through the plants had gone faster after this and Flash seemed to be in his element, which surprised the Gryffindor just slightly. He had assumed that the Slytherin liked nature, but he had never thought he would be so knowledgeable about it as well.
”Alan, would you mind if I asked you a bit about yourself? I feel like I barely know anything about you.”
The third year glanced up from the lexicon that he had been flipping through in order to find the specific plant he was looking to sort in now, he would just need its name. A slight smile appeared on his face and he nodded, "S-sure, go a-ahead! Can I a-ask some in return?", he responded. He did not mind questions at all and hoped he could answer them. He smiled at Flash's words as he listed what he knew about him so far. The last point made him laugh lightly, he was not sure if the other meant it seriously, but he took the compliment nonetheless.
"H-Hm... I like them a-and would love to learn more about them!", he explained, vaguely, before frowning slightly, as if he had to think about something. It was true, he loved learning about creatures and he loved them in general. He wanted to protect them from harm and study them so he knew how they were and what to look out for. His face relaxed however, as he glanced back at the other kid with a smile, "I also th-think often th-that people don't understand th-them and fear them f-for something they a-are not", he explained.
"D-Do you have a c-career you are i-interested in?", he wondered. He did not know that much about the other student and yet he felt like he knew a lot about him, just by being around him. He knew that he was a singer, he had heard him perform and it had been incredible. He knew he had a connection to Willow and the way he spoke and behaved only could mean, that he must have been raised in a similar fashion as he was; after all the Slytherin had even hinted on it before. Yet there was barely anything except for minor observations that he knew, so his curiosity awoke.

Alan made an interesting point. He had to admit that he was one of the people that misunderstood them. Having only had two experiences with magical creatures so far, he was not a fan. It was in part due to his lack of knowledge, there was simply too much to learn to cram magical creatures into the mix as well. He had to stop the buck somewhere, even though the result was that he wouldn’t know what to do if he came face-to-face with one again. If he was lucky, Alan would be there with him. That was the great advantage to having friends across varied disciplines-- it was good to diversify so that one was exposed to a greater wealth of knowledge without having to study it oneself.
He did however wonder why he chose such specific wording. Were magical creatures very commonly misunderstood? His family did invite over wizards and witches from time to time, usually to further Valerius’ political career, but the topic of magical creatures never came up. Perhaps most people are happy to live their lives without having to interact with them, much like the way muggles interacted with most creatures in nature. Growing up in stables where animals were taken care of with what could be mistaken as religious fervor, he had also grown a slight dislike of animals. For one, he couldn’t relate to them, their minds were incapable of advanced thought. He had to admit he didn’t know why so many people seemed obsessed with them, paying more for a thoroughbred horse than most people paid for a house, treating them like royalty.
Magical creatures were different, he assumed. He wondered if some of them didn’t also have a prefrontal cortex. It was an interesting thought, though it also frightened him. In general, he didn’t like anything unknown to him. Ironically, this was exactly the line of thinking that Alan was saying he was trying to defend against. He would gladly hear the argument.
”I have to admit I am one of those people. Frightened of the unknown, or the unknowable. What would you have to say to someone like me? Are most magical creatures harmless?” Flash encouraged the discussion further.
In addition however, Alan got his return question in. Alan had been trying for a while to learn more about Flash, but either by convenience or diversion, Flash had avoided saying much of anything at all. Ever since he had repaired his relationship with Willow, he had resolved to be less controlling of the information he doled out. He figured most small information was alright to share, and enriched whatever relationship he added his personal information to. Still, he often wondered what good it would do for others to know him, but he pushed through the feeling.
”I haven’t decided on a career, no. Nothing has stood out to me yet, I’ve just been trying to learn as much as I can about everything.” Flash sorted a few sprigs quietly as he mulled over his own answer. It had been the same when he was in private school, he had tried so many different sports and hobbies, but nothing satisfied him. He wondered if anything ever would. ”I think in the very least, I would like to make a great impact. I want to die knowing that my life has made the world a better place. I think most people can relate to that feeling… it's pretty generic.”

The third year glanced at the younger student, who appeared to be thinking about his words, which made Alan smile slightly. When Flash asked, whether all magical creatures were harmless, the third year could not help but snort slightly. Not in a mean way, he was amused by the suggestion and quickly shook his head. "No, n-no, not at all", he said, chuckling slightly, before calming down. "W-well some are of course, b-but others can be dangerous if y-you don't know about them", he explained and Flash could watch a content smile appear on Alan's face. "You can however m-minimize the danger a c-creature could have by understanding it and probably get away without harming the creature o-or being harmed in the process, i-if you knew m-more about it....", he added to his explanation.
"T-Take a hippogriff f-for example; sharp beaks, sharp talons and a big t-temperament, but i-if you know how they think, and behave a-accordingly around them, th-they will respect you", Alan shrugged slightly. His fingers had come to a halt, not even flipping through the lexicon anymore as his mind wandered off. If people would just understand creatures a little more, there would be far less cases of fights against them. Most situations could have most likely been solved if someone knew how to treat the creature without it getting aggressive. Often people would think too fast, forget the why. Why was this creature angry? They often just saw a beast that looked dangerous and thought they would need to defeat it, rather than bringing it to a location where it could roam freely and without fear. "O-Or uhm... the f-flowers, if you had known about their connections to the mosps, I a-am sure you would have never picked them i-in the first place?" Alan hoped that he would not embarrass the other students, by bringing up their first encounter. But he just wanted to point out how a possibly dangerous situation could have been avoided, by some general knowledge about magical flora and fauna.
Alan listened to the other student, when he began to talk about his goals and nodded at them. "Making an impact is n-nice, yeah", he nodded slightly, he could relate to that. "B-But actually achieving this is a ch-challenge", he added with a shrug. He could see that happening, Flash was smart and he was good with people, Alan knew that much at least. It was always nice to have a goal, at least Alan thought this way and was sure it was just something general. A goal gave purpose and a reason to do things, to learn new and broadcast the knowledge to peers. "D-Do you have a-any other interests, a-aside from l-learning more?", he wondered as he watched the other kid sort through some plants effortlessly, making him wonder if perhaps it was something the other student enjoyed doing.

Alan delved promptly into an explanation of his point of view. Said clearly, using examples. He was a diligent speaker, despite his speech impediment. He always gave plenty of information when describing things, and asked questions whenever he didn’t understand something. It was the mark of a very thoughtful person.
Still, the actual argument wasn’t very rousing. He already knew a great deal about how important it was to be well researched. The more one knew about anything, the more prepared they would be to face it. He didn’t know if he had the kind of time to memorize a bunch of magical creature he may never have occasion to see, on top of everything else he was trying to cram in his head.
Wasn’t understanding people enough? He gave a reasonable application of knowledge about magical creatures, but with no pathos. It was like an advertisement, sterile. Was it something Alan had said many times before, when asked? It was almost like a performance.
”Is that really all? Because it might come in handy?” Flash couldn’t help but allow some of the incredulity he felt come through in his voice. ”You could say that about learning anything. Why is it important to understand magical creatures?”
Flash had been experimenting lately with forthright honesty. He had always tried to be truthful, at least technically, but this new tactic was an invitation to also relax the implicit boundaries of unfamiliarity. Flash wasn’t interested in only knowing the face that someone wore to be socially acceptable. He knew it was necessary, but he wanted to be exempt from that level of interaction. After a while it started to get repetitive.
Still, there was more that Alan wanted to know about him, though he couldn’t fathom the purpose for knowing his interests. Most of them were… extremely arbitrary. He was less eager to share that kind of information. He figured Alan to be a non-judgemental type of person, but it was less a worry of what Alan might think of him, and more a resistance to letting go of the image Alan had of him.
He would rather be his brave hero than some self-conscious geek. But he was asking, so per Flash’s own oath to himself, he answered.
”I like… art. And music, and poetry.” It was a short summation, no indulgence of explaining. Shall he go on and on about the meaning art had to his life? Everyone liked art, so there was no real need to elaborate. He could think of a few more things after the listed had jogged his mind. ”I like being in nature… hmm… I like being around friends.”
Flash turned away from his sorting to flash Alan a smile.

Alan thought about the words Flash told him next and could not deny that Flash was correct. Something did seem off, why was it so important to learn about them? But Alan knew the answer, or he thought he did, "Th-They are misunderstood", he said, slowly as if he had to think about the sentence while speaking it. That was more like it, he thought and continued. "O-Often they a-aren't recognized as b-beings! I m-mean sure, some are b-beasts but even th-then it is not l-like they act without reason", he tried to explain. Were his words making sense? Could Flash follow his explanation at all? Alan truly hoped so.
"E-Especially by w-watching them you l-learn a lot; h-how they interact a-and what instinct th-they have or furhterm-more their intelligence", he shrugged slightly as he glanced over to the other student in the hopes that it would make some amount of sense to the other kid. He was not used to people asking for his reasoning in matters like this. People often had an opinion or they didn't so it was new to Alan that someone gave their own thesis the benefit of the doubt and let him change their mind. Flash seemed smart, yet he seemed to have no issues in learning new points of views or at least trying to understand them.
Art, music and poetry. Alan could not say that he was surprised by this, it sounded very much like something Flash could be interested in. It made Alan wonder what specific kind of music, poetry and art the other student liked or whether there even was a specific kind he preferred. Maybe Flash liked it in general, but somehow Alan assumed there must have been some sort of preference. Alan would make sure to ask more about that at one point, if he did not forget to ask.
"N-Nature? Is th-that why you w-were out here?", he asked the Slytherin curiously. It had looked like the younger boy had been on a walk until Alan caught his attention and asked him for assistance. When Flash flashed him a smile, Alan returned it genuinely. If Alan had some kind of image of Flash before, it surely had not been affected by anything the Slytherin had let him know about his personality. Alan was as accepting of him, than he had been from the beginning.

Alan began to describe his point of view with a bit more of a personal bent, though none of it connected emotionally with Flash. He wondered what the emotional connection for Alan was, why he was so vested in the idea that they ought to be understood. There was something to be said about understanding the often misunderstood-- it could be an act out of pity for the mistreated. It seemed like the kind of noble calling Alan might find himself drawn to. Still, the way he answered seemed to belie an even more personal connection. Perhaps he had encounters with magical creatures that had gone awry, wishing he would have known more then. He wasn’t sure why he was mulling it over in his head, when at this point in their relationship, Flash could ask Alan those kinds of questions without being seen as suspicious.
”You keep talking about their intelligence and how they are misunderstood. I was hoping you would tell me more about you, not them. Why you care about their being understood.” Flash hoped this question would cut through the chaff. Perhaps Alan wasn’t used to being asked about his opinions, or similarly, he could have not yet realized Flash’s true interest in said opinions.
Alan would have to realize eventually that Flash wouldn’t be satisfied by only knowing the Alan that everyone else knew. If he was interested in someone, it was in every aspect of who they were, what made them tick. After discovering the futility of trying to know everyone, he instead focused on the ones he thought were deserving of the undertaking. Alan had proven time and again to be one of those people, and he finally had the opportunity to untangle some of the netting surrounding the passageway through to the misunderstood creature inside.
Alan was not having as easy of a time learning more about Flash, if only because his answers had been short and unembellished. As was usual when he spoke about himself. Unlike many his age, he didn’t feel misunderstood at all. He was very precise about the impression he left on others, and didn’t often leave the opportunity open to be read incorrectly. Burnett and Ruka liked to say it was all a lie, a mask, but Flash didn’t give much credence to their assumptions. Concerning yourself this much with other people’s business won’t fix whatever mess you are keeping hidden inside there. It made him feel a bit sick to remember the words, somehow they still had power over him even after all the time that had passed. He was lucky he was surrounded by greenery, or he might have faltered and pulled a disturbed face.
”Ah, yes. I always feel better when I’m outside. It’s hard to describe precisely, it’s like being around plants lets me borrow their strength.” Flash allowed himself to talk in the whimsical way that nature made him talk in. It simply filled him with lightness. ”Nature is a part of everything, always around us and underneath us. I feel a reverence for it, like it will be around to see the rise and fall of all our silly machinations. So unconcerned with the games we play.”
Flash continued with his work, a cheerful grin on his face as he described his relationship with nature. He could go on and on, but at some point it would just revert to incoherent rambling. The feeling he had was more profound than could be explained with words.

"Oh", he whispered once it dawned on him that Flash was not bothered by the facts why a creature's life was dear. Flash only was out to know what exactly creatures meant to Alan. What did they mean to Alan? His initial response would have been that he just liked them, but that did not sound right. Of course he liked creatures, but was that all? "I- I just l-like them, I guess?", he hummed slowly, as if he was testing how the words felt once they left his mouth. But that did not seem like it was everything at all, it seemed like puzzle pieces were missing. It was the easy way out, through the window instead of looking for the key to the door, that must have been lost at one point. Alan knew that he felt like he could relate to creatures, because weren't all of them creatures? For Muggles they certainly were; odd creatures that should be feared. Misunderstood. Alan shook his head, looking over to Flash and offering him a light smile, but it seemed strained this time, his thoughts occupying his mind too much to actually offer him a relaxed smile.
It seemed like a safe topic. There was no sign whatsoever that Alan was extremely uncomfortable with the topic. It was more like he was not used to speak about it, unsure how to word and express his thoughts and feelings, maybe because he did not even know the answer himself. Alan felt unsure about the answer, no idea of how to explain the situation to the Slytherin. A normal wizard would feel like an alien if they would be discovered by a crowd of Muggles. But as a Metamorphmagus Alan was special even among his own kind and he had no idea how he felt about that sometimes.
Alan enjoyed the other topic, learning about Flash was something he had not gotten the chance to before, since their conversations seemed to always be interrupted at times when Alan would ask the other boy a personal question. Now in this quiet, peaceful moment in the greenhouse, there was no distraction around and more than that, Flash was willing to share bits and pieces of personal information. Listening to him explain his thoughts, Alan could not help but smile peacefully. "Yeah...", he sighed as he dropped his gaze to a bundle of dried herbs, placing it in the container that already had a collection of those plants. A glance over to Flash showed him how content the other kid was, a cheerful and happy grin making his features seem more soft and childlike than the usual stoic expression that he had seen him with a few times already. Seeing Flash this content relaxed the third year as well, as he calmly began to flip through the book again to sort in the next bundles of plants.

As the conversation moved forward, Alan started talking less and less. Flash looked over to gauge his reaction, but he seemed to be lost in thought. He didn’t want to push it, they were only meant to be having a nice conversation to begin with, it wasn’t an interrogation. Part of having tact was knowing when to back off.
While Alan technically answered the personal question, it had been with something so uninsightful as to be suspicious. Perhaps he didn’t know the answer himself, or perhaps it was something he didn’t want to talk about. Or, similarly, he could have a very uncomplicated interest in magical creatures. It wasn’t as though Flash’s interest in plants was in all honesty much deeper than that-- that he liked being around them.
”I see.” Flash said something short, unofficially ending the conversation.
The silence between them had not been uncomfortable anyway, so he was just as happy to return to it as he was to talk. The ability to lapse into not talking with grace was a trait Flash sought out in close companions, it reminded him of Sylvain and how much of their relationship had been completely unspoken. With how much time Flash spent in his own head, he appreciated the breaks to recollect his thoughts and review the information he had freshly learned.
The task wasn’t far from being completed anyway. No interruptions. Being around Alan and plants together had been a relaxing environment, putting Flash into a good mood for the rest of the evening.
