You just had to get caught, huh?
The offending hour was 5AM on a particularly breezy Saturday morning. Calanthe was usually careful during her nightly escapades, taking the less travelled routes while barefoot to avoid making a sound. Once she got to the stairwell of the Astronomy Tower, she would sit quietly and contemplate her shite predicament. No noise, no theatrics, no thoughts about doing something dumb like running up and down the corridors or breaking into a professor’s office. That would be downright idiotic.
In addition to her other precautions, Calanthe made sure to leave her nesting spot before the sun rose, typically before 2AM. But it's Saturday, right? I can afford a few more minutes up here. Every rulebreaker’s last words. She could not tell what time it was when she was rudely awoken from her sleep by a prefect, but the sun had already risen and Calanthe knew she had made a ‘fatal’ mistake.
Or was it...a mistake?
While many of her thoughts and emotions were muddled into an unrecognizable pile in her sorry excuse for a brain, it was no secret to Calanthe’s friends that she wanted her mother to receive a stark reminder that her daughter had changed for the worse and it was all her fault. Well, it would have been no secret if Calanthe had any friends, but she had no time or energy left to address that. Anyways, detention was the perfect opportunity for Calanthe to show her mother how much the older woman had messed up. Now, she was not sure if one session would get a letter sent home, but this was a start.
A few hours after she had been sent back to her dorm with the promise of detention, Calanthe found herself climbing back up the somewhat comforting stairwell to the Astronomy classroom. She passed by her spot, cursing at the cool stone for being comfortable enough to fall asleep at. Then she bit back those swears, reminding herself that this was what she wanted. Right?
After slowly making her way to the classroom, Calanthe stood in front the familiar door and contemplated running away. Not showing up for detention could make her situation much worse and would probably get that letter sent to her mother. Unfortunately, the breeze from the morning carried into the day, magnifying the cold caused from the overcast skies. Her joints were prone to aching in this sort of weather, so she decided to just get on with it.
Forgoing a knock because only good girls knock, Calanthe pushed open the door to the classroom and entered, eyes scanning the room for sight for Professor Karr who would be supervising her.

A letter had arrived as soon as Kateri had gotten to her room after office hours. It felt like she had barely stepped away from the classroom and office when she was being pulled right back in. Something from a prefect addressing a student being caught and detention to be dished out. Assuming it would be one of the few she would have to hand out, little did she know how students here handled rules. Sending off a response detailing the detention time and place with the school owl along to the rule-breaker, Calanthe Choi, Kat took an hour to change and trudge down to the Kitchen for coffee before making her way back up to the tower... A hint of dark circles under the woman's eyes glaringly obvious she hadn't slept well in the past week. The tiniest part of her felt somewhat annoyed at having to deal with detention for the day, though she drowned it in her coffee hoping it would be enough to keep her eyes open. If anything she would cut this short... so long as the student was reasonable.
Beyond class, Kateri didn't have much interaction with Miss Choi so she wasn't sure what awaited her when the girl arrived. Having made sure to get there before the student, Kat eyed the room trying to blink the cobwebs away from her thoughts. She had to come up with something... something for detention.... annyything... Brown eyes glanced from one shelf to the next, along the books and orreries... cubbies... Kateri brought her mug to her lips and drew in a long slow sip of coffee. What to do with them..... The lack of sleep was starting to rear its ugly head, a small irritable feeling settling in that Kateri did not enjoy. Typically she was a patient woman. Typically. Today was another story.
Holding her cup in one hand, arms crossing her chest, Kateri rolled her neck against her left shoulder and let out a small yawn. There was one thing that hadn't been done in quite awhile and in truth was something Kateri had been procrastinating on. A smile snaked across the woman's lips as she drew her wand and waved it towards the telescopes, moving them to the middle of the classroom. Setting her mug down on her desk, Kateri grabbed a rug that was rolled up and set to rest against the shelf behind her desk. Walking to the middle of the room she laid out the rug and gave another wave of her wand at the instruments. This surely would keep the student busy and get a bit of her own work done as well, win/win. Slowly the three large telescopes broke down piece by piece before her eyes, laying themselves out gently on the floor. The oldest of the three was fairly quick to take itself apart and rest neatly on the rug, legs coming undone and tucking themselves up against the long main tube of the telescope. The other two were much newer which meant many more pieces all ready for cleaning and assembling. It might be an annoying and bothersome task but some things just needed to be taken apart so they could be fully cared for, cleaned, and maintained. Often pieces would come up missing or you would come across a part you never knew about before. Either way, she knew that often once it was all put back together she had a better appreciation and understanding. Something she found true about people and not just objects. The last pieces sat themselves on the rug in orderly fashion as the door creaked open to the classroom.
"I hope you slept well, Miss Choi." Not bothering to turn around, Kateri took another drink from her mug. 'I know I certainly did not...' The irritable little monster inside of her skull snapped. Brushing a stray strand of hair from her vision, the young woman turned her chin and glanced over her shoulder at the student. Directing her gaze back to the pieces on the floor in front of her, Kateri gestured her free hand over the rug. "Shall we?" It wasn't that she didn't trust the girl to put the pieces together in order even given the directions... no.. Oh no, Kateri had more in mind for today.

Calanthe took in the layout of the room and breathed an irritated sigh. Contraption parts were spread out onto a rug in the center of the classroom and while she was unable to tell what those parts made when they came together, she knew she was in for a long morning. Looking up to find the back of Professor Karr, Calanthe stepped into the room and closed the door gently, unconsciously straightening up in the presence of an authoritative figure. Though, she quickly realized the position her body fell into and relaxed, unwilling to give off an air of respect for the professor.
In truth, Calanthe had no idea what to think of Professor Karr. She had no particular feelings for the previous Astronomy professor either other than a healthy dose of contempt due to their position above her. But her opinions surely did not come from listening to their lectures during the school year. The young witch had a habit of forcing herself to not listen in class, but when the topics were things exciting like dark magic or convenient charms, even her own brain could not stop her ears from catching the details. In a class like Astronomy, a total bore and waste of time, she obviously had no intentions of critically understanding the content.
“What the hell is all this?” Calanthe muttered at the objects on the rugs, just loud enough for Professor Karr to hear. Just a while ago, she would not even dream of speaking that way in front of a teacher. Even after deciding to change up her entire nature, she found it hard to start a verbal fight with professors. Maybe it was just her common sense telling her to keep her attitude in check, but if that was the case, common sense needed to be booted right out the door.
Kneeling onto the mat, she got a closer look at the pieces and could immediately tell that they were parts of a telescope. So, I did pay attention in this class? Calanthe could not remember telescope structure being taught in the class but maybe it was and she unconsciously picked it up? Or did she read about it in a textbook while hiding away up in the Quidditch stands? Not wanting to think about her brain continuously betraying her heart, she picked up one of the legs of the tripod. I’ll start with the base and work my way up. Are there accessory trays? … Yes, there they are! Where are those wing nut screws? How do a put together the tube again? I read that somewhere.
“Do you have the instru-,” Wait… stop! You’re not supposed to know any of this, dimwit. The Gryffindor dropped the leg abruptly. She would never admit it but she was thankful that the rug was there to soften its landing. “I mean… what am I supposed to be doing here?”
