October brought with it more than just cold weather and looming midterms but the promise of children being sugared up and set forth in groups of princesses and demons to adventure the halls in search of adventure. Trick-or-Treating had been something that many Muggleborn students were all too familiar with. The excitement and stories had filtered along to those that maybe were not as aware of this tradition within the magical world. While there were no neighborhoods to wander the streets of, walking up and greeting neighbors to ask for those sugary delights. There were Professors that wanted to make the castle feel the same, filled with the same joy and excitement of being able to get sugary treats for free. The professors and staff had been planning to make up for their lack of being able to go out on the town and trick or treat by setting up locations within the castle itself for the students to take advantage of.

By mid October students would see posters placed around and an announcement during one of the dinner feasts about hosting a Trick-or-Treat event on Halloween night. Costumes were welcomed but not required and of course students could bring either a pillowcase or some sort of container for their candy. It was sure to be a night of destressing from the looming responsibilities of school. At every location there was some sort of candy receptacle, and a label for how much was allowed to be taken from it.

The stairwell leading up to the Astronomy classroom was lit with small floating candles, enchanted carefully so as to not get flames or sparks anywhere in the stone covered walkway. Small flecks of light flickered and danced along the stone walls in the shapes of constellations, a shooting star making an appearance every now and then. Thin cobwebs hanging from the scaled ceiling would tickle at the students as they climbed the stairs. Rolling smoke curved around the edges of the stone and slipped like silk around the student’s feet as they passed. It would be eerily quiet as they made their way towards the top of the stairs, a small table with long knobbly legs and marble top would be set in front of the locked classroom door. Atop it sat a brass orrery with ornate feet and metal workings. Spinning around were various planets the students had been learning about. Upon closer inspection the students would find the spheres representing each planet or moon were actually candies! Students would be surprised to find when they chose their candy that it would either be a lollipop swirled in a design like the planet it represented or a fairly hefty jawbreaker shaped in the same fashion. A piece of parchment nestled next to the brass feet of the orrery made it clear in metallic blue ink 'Please Take ONE''.
ooc: You can choose whichever your student gets candy / planet wise! But only take one!

Though there would be a price to pay should anyone be tempted to sneak a second candy... Sure no one was watching, but that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be a trick to giving in and pulling another candy from the orrery. Should someone fall victim to the tiny voice inside of their sugared brains, plucking a second candy would result in ones hair to stand on end and be stricken with a blazing orange sheen. This would become their hip new look until reaching the Ballroom and having a member of staff kindly re-do their β€˜do.’

Walking up the stairs of the Astronomy tower was like stepping into one of the horror films Sarah had heard so much about. The flickering candles cast shadows against the narrow stairwell, making her jump every time she turned a corner. That, mixed with the smoke swirling around her feet and the cobwebs tickling her face - she wasn't entirely certain if they were real or not - created the perfect setting for Halloween. Sarah was far from easy to scare, her years growing up in a large manor with too many rooms and long, dimly lit corridors making her somewhat numb to the spooky, but she could appreciate the effort made here. Even Sarah could feel the hairs not he back of her neck standing on end. She didn't turn around though, eager to see what treats awaited her outside the Astronomy classroom.

Turning the last corner, Sarah's eyes grew wide, uncharacteristically excited as her eyes caught sight of the ornate looking orrery. She'd always had a love for space, taking interest in the planets and constellations ever since the first time her mother had taken her up the hill at the end of their grounds and pointed out Orion and the bears to her.

"They're so pretty," She said to herself as she looked at the at the lollipops and jawbreakers scattered across the table. She went to pick one up to take a closer look, her hand stopping midway in the air as her eyes caught sight of the sign positioned beside the treats. Please take one. Sarah pulled back her hand. She'd just wanted to look at each of them up close, not planning to take more than one. She was already slightly overwhelmed with how generous the new tradition of giving people free sweets and couldn't bring herself to abuse that and take too many treats. She'd never experienced a Halloween like this - one where her father wasn't around to spoil her fun and stop her from getting involved with such muggle traditions.

She chewed her lower lip, trying to decide which planet she wanted to take. Perhaps Mercury, she thought, loving the stoney colour of the sweet. Or maybe Earth, the blues were bright and beautiful. Eventually, her eyes fell on the Jupiter lolly. She admired the swirls of oranges and whites and reds and knew that was the one she wanted. She took the sweet and popped it in her mouth, immediately loving the taste. "Where to next?" She muttered around the sweet, her words slightly slurred as she turned back towards the stairwell to make her way through the decorated corridor once more.

Trick-or-treating was something Logan hadn't participated in in years. For a while it had been a family tradition, but it fazed out after her mother had passed away. With the chance to go trick-or-treating at Hogwarts, Logan decided she was going to participate. That is how the young Hufflepuff found herself heading up the stairs to the Astronomy tower.

Slowly making her way up the stairs, Logan brushed her hand against the cool stone walls as she walked. She smiled as the smoke around her feet swirled and moved around with every step she took up the stairway. Honestly this was probably the young Hufflepuff's favorite time of year. Making her way up to the top, she smiled at the sight of the orrery. Having Astronomy based candy made her rather happy, so this was the first place she was stopping before heading to the final destination.

Logan's long sleeved black dress flowed around her as she stepped up to the orrery and grinned at the candies. Slowly reaching forward, she grabbed a lolly the color and design of Jupiter. Just the thought of the planet made her think of her horses back home and with a smile, Logan turned and started to make her way back down the stairway. It was quiet up in the Astronomy tower, and it calmed Logan greatly. If it could be like this all the time, she would love it. Most people didn't bother walking the whole way to the tower, so the fact there was still so much candy left was not a surprise to the Hufflepuff.

On her way down the stairway, Logan noticed the spider webs in the rafters above her head. She shivered in discomfort at the thought of the little creatures. She was not a fan of spiders, never would be, but at least they weren't real webs, she hoped.

Paisley and her friend Allie walked up the stone steps all the way up to the astronomy tower. Neither of them had spoken about many of the classes they shared here, although they were always fascinating, at least to Paisley. The stars, the professor, all of it. It made her want to learn more about the world that shown above her each night.

The Gryffindor looked up, hand still on the railing so as not to fall, staring at the night sky. She felt content for a few moments, needing and wanting nothing accept to be here with Allie. The wind blowing on her face, the moon above her head...it all seemed so perfect...

She smiled over at Allie, and although to most it would seem like a regular smile, to the two it was much more meaningful than that. It was a thank you, for all Allie had done for Paisley, and a portrayal of the Gryffindor's happiness that had been given to her.

When they arrived at the top of the tower, Paisley looked around, delighted. "oooh..Spooky!" the two walked up to the candy bowl, and the Gryffindor took note of the "Take 1" sign. She didn't want to end up jinxed, as she had seen some other students were already. She thought it was completely ridiculous to try and steal extra candy, they would have enough anyhow. The entire school seemed to be open to trick or treating, their buckets would most surely be full by the end of the night.

Paisley picked up one of the planet lollipops and examined it. She had grabbed a Saturn and turned it over in her palm, looking at it carefully. "Do you think this is Saturn, or is this one? I can never remember if it's the one with the rings or not..." she pointed to another lollipop, careful not to touch it. She didn't know what the consequence would be if she did, and she didn't think she wanted to.

"I can't believe how far we've come in a month. To think I didn't even know you before I came here is crazy..." she speculated for a few moments, looking down at her feet. "Thanks."

Serena enters thread from Flying
The Hufflepuff made the long journey from the Flying office all the way through the castle and up the tower. If nothing else, her legs were getting a good workout from this trip - especially on the staircases! The chocolate broom that she had acquired from Professor Jemari's office was supplying the endless energy that she needed to do the climb. Plus she was still buzzing from the fact that she had caught the chocolate broom in the first place, combined with the sugar rush that was getting to her as she nommed happily on it.

She panted a little, slightly out of breathe after climbing all of the staircases up to the Astronomy Tower. But her eyes lit up as she arrived in the corridor. It was well worth the journey. There were beautiful candles lighting up the whole path and it looked like the light was dancing around the tower, especially with the smoky effect that came down.

Serena eventually got to the door, where she spotted a bunch of round candy. The name of them did not come to mind - perhaps she had not had one before? They were on sticks though, like an acid pop or a lollipop or something! How cute! It took her a minute or two to realise that each of the jawbreakers was designed to represent a planet, "Woahhh," She mumbled to herself as she was impressed by it. Her hand hovered over one before moving to another before going to another. She didn't touch any of them but she was unsure which to go for. They were all so cool.

In the end, she ended up picking one that looked like Jupiter - whether or not she realised it. Of course, she was certainly tempted to take one of each but the rather large and obvious sign saying 'please take ONE' made her decide not to. It was better to share, after all and leave some for the others.

Taking her Jupitar jarbreaker lollipop, Serena continued to nom her chocolate candy as she made her way back down the stairs.

Though this stairwell had been climbed countless times over, Pericles ascended with a sense of solemnity. It was a strange state for a young trick-or-treater to be in. It wasn't as if the boy didn't enjoy Halloween: in fact, he adored the occasion, and this year was particularly special. His parents were more prone to household soirees than going door-to-door for candy, so the opportunity to do so here at Hogwarts, the most magical place on earth, was outright liberating. Peri was something of an odd one out. He hadn't embarked on the event with a companion, as he did not intend to dash excitedly from room to room, instead walking with a slow stride (which he hadn't wanted to inconvenience anyone with). The Ravenclaw was soaking in the festivities, mutely deriving vicarious glee from watching other groups scramble for sweets. He took his time admiring the staff's effort to provide them with fun festivities. All the same, there hung over the lad a strange somberness.

If he enjoyed the holiday, what could make the matter of getting candy so glum? It wasn't as if he disliked Astronomy, nor the new teacher manning the position. Professor Karr came across as a kind and compassionate soul, whose lessons were just as engaging as they were informative, and the quality of his grades hadn't wavered in her wake. It wasn't so much her presence which troubled him as it was the absence of Alaric. Now, mind, that wasn't to say Pericles was dissatisfied with Ravenclaw's new Head of House. Mister Iwaski was known as a cool and cutting creature, who hosted little love of festivities or children, though this wasn't unfamiliar. The young wizard's own father wore a severe and intimidating mask to the public eye. He liked to imagine that, like him, Iwaski was ultimately driven by duty, and underneath that frigid front was a man ferociously devoted to the safety of his charges. No, Pericles didn't dislike astronomy, or Professor Karr, or Mister Iwaski in the slightest. Yet regret weighed heavy on his little heart.

Pericles' first year at Hogwarts had begun on a note of timidity. He did not know how to speak with adult authority figures properly, as the bulk of his social interactions had been highly structured prior to public schooling. He tried not to look any of his teachers in the eye, but of them all, he had an especially keen curiosity towards Professor Equinox. Only once before had he ever met a dhampir. How could he ever possibly breach conversation with one? Hello, my father's a vampire, I empathize with your struggles! There was simply no sensible way of going about that conversation. So he avoided it, and the professor, until the man became their Head of House. Pericles would not forget the abrupt invitation to become a prefect. Outside of his good grades and adherence to (most) school rules, the professor's reasoning was a mystery. Whether or not it was his intention, this decision had made for an utterly formative development in the young heir's life. He began speaking with more students, readily going out of his way to offer aid, and became bolder as the months rolled by. Even then, he spoke very little to their Head of House.

In fact, Pericles was not certain he had said much more than passing Yes Sirs and Goodnight Sirs. But he remembered fondly toiling for points with his housemates, and when they won a month's cup, he remembered waking to a breakfast in the dorms just for their House, compliments of Alaric. He remembered the fateful Ravenclaw trip to the Forbidden Forest, most of all the vivid imagery - just prior to losing consciousness- of Alaric bursting through the trees and barring an Acromantula's advance, his arms opened wide to defend a duo of students. He had encouraged them, supported them, and defended them when they needed him most. Now he was gone, and Pericles couldn't recall having ever given him a Thank You, Sir.

Climbing stairs is hardly ever an enjoyable experience. In this instance, doing so was all the more tiresome, as each step sent Pericles deeper into a remorseful introspection. His metaphorical raincloud was pitter-pattering away overhead by the time he reached the top. Yet waiting for them was a charming attraction, a miniature orrery, and candy makes an excellent distraction for children. A feeble smile shone through the gloom while he came closer, admiring the whimsy of it all, eyes wide behind feathery mask while he wondered over which to take. The decision didn't take long. Pericles plucked a sugar Mercury from the bunch. After all, he was a Gemini, and their sign was ruled by Mercury. He had learned that in astronomy. That trademark sleepy stare was fixed on the sweet as the bird rolled it between his fingers, turning it over to observe the likeness. Peri pondered the planet's principles of rationality and communication, more so, how he had been lacking both whenever he shied from the adults at Hogwarts. Thin lips pressed into a light line. He would make a promise: to become bolder still, lest he repeat the mistake of failing to tell anyone else how much they were appreciated, before life carried them down a path apart from his.

Molly was not sure what had drawn her to the Astronomy stairwell after collecting her treats from the library. All she knew was that the Astronomy Classroom was her favourite other all the classrooms she had visited so far. She was intrigued to see how it had been decorated to for the spooky season.

As she climbed up the final few steps she noticed a sudden drop in noise, it was eerie and made Molly shiver slightly as she noticed the ghostly light that was being cast by the enchanted candles that lined the corridor. She could not help but gulp slightly as she let out a slow deep breath. There was an overwhelming sense that something was going to jump out at her at any moment and Molly could not made any promises that she would not scream if someone or something did block her path.

Slowly she proceeded towards the locked classroom door. It felt like there was something dancing in front of her eyes that she could not quite see. Molly resisted the urge to rub her eyes as though to clear them. It took her longer than it probably should have to realise that there were specks of light that looked like stars, constellations even. It was quite a spectacle to hold and although creepy Molly could not help but admit that it was beautiful and very well down. Continuing down the hallway she notices a table with an orrery displaying different plants and moons. A sign clearly stated that students were to take only one. Her eyes lingered on the planets, they were so beautiful and mesmerising.

Taking a moment to decide, almost hypnotised, Molly reached out a took hold of the globe that looked like planet earth. As she lifted it, she could feel its weightiness in her hand it felt like a jawbreaker or possibly a golf ball. If she were to throw it, it could do some real damage. She slipped the candy into her lab coat pocket along with the three vampire kisses she had received at the library.

Despite the sign Molly could see how students could be tempted to take more than one candy, they really were exquisite. Molly being Molly though she obeyed the rules and began to make her way out of the hallway with the intention of heading to the ballroom to join in the fun at the Spooktacular movie party.

Xailah was still bitter over her assumption, that trick-or-treating, was a year-round thing for muggle children only. She wore a settle grimace, for her whole trek to the Astronomy stairwell. Astronomy was one of the many classes that Xailah was rather indifferent towards. She liked the concept very much, but she found herself only wanting to look at the planets, and stars. Digging too much into the history of the ethereal objects, sometimes made them lose that magical aura that they carried. She thought that stars, and planets were never really meant to be understood. Thats why they had been placed so out of reach.

The cub had seen a couple students walk by, carrying odd-looking candies in their hands. Xailah wanted one, and figured that Astronomy would be the place to obtain one; considering the suckers resembled planets. The way the stairwell had been decorated, was actually very pretty- but to be fair it would have been a challenge to make stars ugly. Xailah didn't really notice the spiderwebs that grabbed at her hair, or the fog that wrapped around her ankles; as she was too distracted by the occasional dancing sparkle, on the wall.

As she made her way up the stairwell, an unshakeable feeling would begin to creep up on her. It was a horribly familiar one, and the glittering constellations on the wall, did little to help with anything. She would quicken her pace up the steps. Somewhere along the line, she would pick up SchrΓΆdinger. The pumpkin costume made it nearly impossible for him to follow his lady up the stairs. Both girl, and cat would quickly find their way to their objective. But Xailah didn't try to take the candies at first. Oh no. A small, irrational voice, was trying to convince her into taking the whole damn orrery, that the sweets were being served on.

She would find that she could not move the brass stand, so she panicked, and grabbed a candy. She looked at the small sucker she plucked, that swirled with the blue and green colors of Terra. A sigh escaped her nose, and she turned on her heel to leave. Wait. She wanted another Earth. The Gryffindor's lip quivered, as she looked at the orrery out of the corner of her eye. She really didn't need a second candy. But her kleptomania was telling her otherwise- she needed to scratch the itch. Xailah turned again to face the table. Don't do it you git. You'll probably get caught. The voice of rationality warned. But she did it anyways. The moment her little clawed fingers pulled a second candy Earth, from its slot; her hair turned a fiery shade of orange, and shot right up. Disgusting.

For a moment she thought that she had done it to herself (which she technically had), but she would quickly find that the color was a struggle for one of her talent, to remove. She eyed the candies she had taken, and the remaining ones in the orrery. Oh, she wasn't going to stop there. Oh goodness no. She needed a moon now, for her two Earths. Horrid orange hair wasn't enough to deter her from taking more. She had to fully commit to her mistakes, now. Via making more mistakes. Her fingers would extend to grab a moon, and then, once she had it, she would make a break for the stairs. She, and SchrΓΆdinger had a movie to spectate.

Opeila had been looking forward to this day for the whole month. Halloween! Trick or treating! One of the things she did at home every year before she went to Hogwarts.
Days ago she messaged Flash already, asking him to come with her, and she was glad she did so. It seemed that Flash never made the experience. Wasn't that a thing that every child should have done in their lives? It was definitely time to change that!

Opeila very much improvised wuth her costume. A black shirt, black jogging trousers and a pale pink scarf from her mum that... kinda should not be paired with her duelling brooch, but Opeila didn't care.
Today was not about wearing matching things. She was going a duellist- or her very own interpretation of one.

Like she told Flash, she waited in front of the ballroom at 7pm, looking at the decoration. The spookiness didn't affect her as much as it did at the masquerade ball. She got used to the candles' dancing shadows, didn't expect a murderous creature behind them.
The Slytherin could definitely appreciate the atmosphere to some extend.

When Flash showed up, she convinced him to go to the Astronomy Tower first. She liked that place anyway and very badly wanted to see it covered in Halloween decoration. Combined with the nightsky, the view had to be amazing! Who cared about all those stairs one had to go up?
Opeila's enthusiasm had reached a height it hadn't been for months. Halloween meant home. It meant that it was all still normal, right? Everything would be good as long as time was going normal, life was somewhere normal.

The last stairwell leading to the astronomy classroom was decorated. Candled were floating around and cobwebs were hanging down. Curious, Opeila felt a piece of cobweb between her fingers, before flicking it towards Flash. "Careful!" She giggled, running up the last steps.

"Oh my- Look at that!", she would say only a moment after, looking at the smoke around her feet. "This is amazing!"
Finally she would find the planet shaped candy.
"Hmmm... Which one are you taking?", she asked her best friend.

Flash had been glad to have the opportunity to spend time with Opeila in a non-emergency situation, like they did before the spider attacks. He felt lucky that she had the idea-- he was so busy that it might not have even occurred to him. It was always a struggle to balance the pursuit of his ambitions with the nurturing of relationships... but when they were strong enough bonds, the other person sometimes met him halfway. He felt eternally grateful for that minor grace.

Opeila had wanted to share the joy of trick-or-treating with him, as he had only a partial experience with it. He had never dressed up in a costume before, and didn't even know where to start. Still, he wanted to embrace the spirit of the occasion. He valued his pride, but he didn't find dress-up to be inherently shameful or silly. It was the opportunity for great creativity...

... though, as usual, Flash's creativity when it came to crafts was minimal. Since it was his first rodeo, he imagined he would be forgiven for going for the last-minute classic: a bedsheet with holes in it. He saw it in cartoons and comic books all the time, so it would certainly be recognizable. Not only that, but he had the added benefit of anonymity. He wouldn't have to deal with anyone besides who he planned to deal with.

Meeting Opeila before starting on their candy-raiding tour, he had to announce his identity so she could be sure, if the expensive shoes dangling out from under the sheet hadn't been enough. She suggested the Astronomy Tower and Flash was plenty willing. They exchanged a few good-natured pleasantries, for even though they hadn't spoken in a while, they were close. The air between them wasn't tense, but more excited. It reminded him of his birthday the last year, when Opeila had wanted to show him the joys of birthdays that he had been missing out on. He wondered what else he had missed.

Climbing the stairs, Opeila played around, flicking one of the cobwebs in his direction, which stuck on him indolently, earning her a small chuckle.

"Now I look even more frightening."

At the top, beautifully sculpted lollipops and jawbreakers floated around like they were orbiting something. He was a bit mystified until brought back down to earth by Opeila's voice asking him a question.

"I.. hmm..." Flash was a decisive person, and picked one out of the air through purely aesthetic reasons. It was pretty. "This one."

He was smiling, though it was impossible to tell. Though he wasn't much of a fan of candy, he liked the journey, and the attention to detail all around him. With the Masquerade behind him, it felt nice to rely on other people to do all the work. He actually felt his age, for the moment.
