Jo yawned. Defense Against the Dark Arts was finally over, and she could relax for a few hours.

She plucked a book from the her cabinet and sat down on her bed. She began to flip through the pages, but for some reason she just couldn’t focus. She wasn’t really in the mood for reading, and that was rare.

She decided to take some some time in selecting some new clothes to wear - a snarky Ravenclaw had so kindly mentioned the smell before class, and she wasn’t about to be humiliated like that again.

The witch sat there for about 20 minutes, staring blankly at an array of sweaters, jackets, and hoodies. Christmas wasn’t really a bit deal to her, and she didn’t have anything particularly festive. She finally grabbed a brown corduroy skirt, a pair of black knee-length socks, and a vermillion V-neck sweater with a gold border.

After briefly forgetting her goal of changing clothes and wandering into the bathroom to brush her teeth, she was finally ready to go out again.

She stayed there just for a few moments, though, to brush her hair and applied some dark-red lipstick, hoping someone would notice and compliment her. They wouldn’t, of course, but it was fine - she was just bored. Beauty was never really Jo’s strong point, but if she tried really hard she guessed she could maybe be attractive. The problem was that she didn’t care - beauty was for grown-ups, and if it meant she couldn’t swim in the lake or she’d mess up her pretty little eyelashes, she didn’t really care for it all that much. Pretty wasn’t a priority. Swimming was.

Her family didn’t even celebrate Christmas - it was becoming more and more popular in Japan, but still nothing compared to New Year. For her it was just the winter solstice, and she wondered if it was the same for a lot of other students, too.

She meandered to the Great Hall, stifling a yawn and stopping by to leisurely greet several portraits. Maybe she’d be able to grab a snack, at least. She wasn’t really looking for trouble today - just some chit-chat. Actually, she really wasn’t up for that today, either. None of those sounded appealing. She was just moody today, then. That was it. Should she go back to her dorm? Nah. She dimly remembered having to meet Saoirse there in a few minutes for something anyway, although the reason escaped her.

As Jo walked in the door, she was astounded by the size of the giant Christmas tree. Beneath it lay a table full of scissors, pliers, and aluminum, tin, glass, and plastic orbs as well as a plethora of other crafting supplies.

Seeing that nobody else was up to the task, she stretched and sat down at the table before selecting a glass orb. She began to stuff it with blue feathers and burnt parchment. Saoirse was supposed to be here… at least, she thought so.

It was Rafa’s free period.
Usually, this was the best part of his day – he could do nearly anything. Run around, mess with Tim, train on the broom, do things and not get caught. It was mischief hour – but, at the moment, there was no mischief to be performed.

Rafa was going to be completely straight - he was a little disappointed. At the moment, all of his friends were in class – Tim included. The Pitch was too cold to practice on. It was pretty unusual for him to wish for work… actually, it never happened… but this was definitely a special occasion. [He had already completed all of his homework for the day. Checked it, too. English was hurting his head.]

Yeah, there was this strange feeling about him - he felt trapped in his own head. It was kind of a restless air, in which he was stuck between wanting something to do, and simultaneously having no motivation to do anything at all. He really hated when he felt like this. His fingers were twitching for something to do, his head a mess of static. He really needed to do something, before he drove himself crazy.

He wasn’t really sure how he ended up in the Great Hall – maybe it was sound of his fellow students. It could have been the ornaments and festivities – those always seemed to draw his eye. Or, quite possibly, it could have been the smell of food. His stomach unconsciously rumbled at the mere thought. God, he was hungry. His hands were jammed in his pocket – he was currently wearing an Adidas hoodie, with a sweater vest over it. The school was a bit cold, after all – it had been snowing for a little while.

He shook the thought from his head, his eyes scanning the bright room. It was seemingly teeming with life. Perhaps there was an event going on, or something. He tried to not think about it too much, instead assessing the situation. People were making ornaments, it looked like. A bit of a smile came to his face. Yeah, he like ornaments. Perhaps this would be a productive way to use is free period.

He began walking up the table, looking for a good place to sit. It wasn’t that the table was packed or anything – he just didn’t want to sit alone, or anything. The thought made him shudder – he felt like talking to someone right now. Perhaps that was the issue he was having right now. It took him a moment, but he finally found a familiar face – though, it might not have been the one he was looking for. Jo Morgan. His favorite rival. He shook his head, a massive grin sneaking onto his face. At the moment, the other Gryffindor was butchering an ornament, filling it with feathers and burnt paper. He almost laughed. It was a bit humorous.

The more he thought about it, the bigger his grin got. He was in a rather mischievous mood today. Overlooking the scene one more time, he decided to act on his impulsive gut feeling. Making sure his steps were soft, he quietly snuck up behind her. Then, suddenly and sharply, he slipped into the bench beside her – he did this so quickly she didn’t have time to protest. “Making ornaments, are we?” he asked with a shit-eating grin on his face, purposefully obnoxious. Wasting no time, he took another ornament and mimicked her filling up her ornament dramatically. The way he did it was purposely humorous – the way a little brother would hound his older sister. “I’m very good at this,” he audibly. “You need lessons?”

Gah! Why? Why was Rafael here?
All she’d wanted was some peace and calm decorating ornaments. But no, of course Rafa had to be here. It’s like she was cursed or something.

Quickly sidling up to her with an idiotic grin plastered all over his face, he began to taunt her.
“Making ornaments, are we?”
What? It’s like he thought he was Yoda or something. Jo was quick to clap back with her own retort.

“Oh hey, if it isn’t our very own birdbrain! You’re just in time - I was just about to go get some more feathers!”

At this point she became aware that he was pantomiming her actions. It wasn’t that offensive, really. She laughed.

“Imitation is the best form of flattery, Rafa.”

Ignoring the overwhelming irony in quoting the statement, she continued to fill the orb with feathers.
“I’m very good at this. You need lessons?”
“If I needed help with crafts, I’d ask a half-goblin!” the girl shot back. She had begun to glue small aluminum pieces to the bottom. It was a rather ugly ornament really. Jo held it up to the light. Hmm... not much better.

“It was supposed to represent an acceptance letter to Hogwarts.” she confessed, forlornly dumping out its contents. The Gryffindor grabbed a packet of glowing green mica powder and poured it into a glass of water, stirring until it became a translucent, shimmering liquid which she dripped into the orb until it was nearly full.

A few drops of black oil, a good shake, and she screwed the cap on before she or Rafa could spill it. Voila! She looked terribly proud of her handiwork.

“Well? What are you making?” She turned to him and demanded.

Oh, Jo. She always had the wittiest responses towards his playful nature. The retorts she fired at Rafa this time around were a bit different, though – she almost seemed slightly amused by his sudden intrusion, though it was a bit hard to read. He didn’t think too much of her insults, though, instead taking it all with a massive grin. “Oh hey, if it isn’t our very own birdbrain!” she snapped at him, referencing the nickname she had proudly dubbed him with. “You’re just in time - I was just about to go get some more feathers!”

Now, this warranted a laugh – Rafa let out a massive guffaw, half-real and half-dramatic. “You’re quite funny, you know that?” he said, albeit sarcastically. His hands were rather clean from handling the craft supplies, which was unusual – he wasn’t artistic or clean. He blamed it on the materials, glancing over at Jo to see how she was faring.

It seemed that she had finally recognized his rather talented mimicking skills. “Imitation is the best form of flattery, Rafa,” she told him smartly. Now, Rafa had to respect that. It was a witty sort of comeback, but held full truth. and Rafa found himself nodding. He found himself nodding absently, a rather impressed look on his face. “Touche,” he responded, finally setting his copied ornament down.

Then, she addressed his false bragging. “If I needed help with crafts, I’d ask a half-goblin!” Rafa bit his lip, shaking his head again with a little laugh. She was really unbelievable. He almost defended himself, but decided against it – he recognized his art was severely lacking. Instead, he added, “Why? Because they’re your kind?”

She held her little ornament up to the light – it was rather nice-looking, he would admit. “It was supposed to represent an acceptance letter to Hogwarts,” she told him. Rafa recognized a hint of honesty in her voice – she wasn’t prodding him with this statement.

“It is rather nice,” he voiced thoughtfully, though his face still held a playful look. He couldn’t have her thinking he liked her, or anything! They were strictly frenemies, so he had to watch what he said. He could only be so nice before their status made a sudden change. And, quite honestly, Rafa liked Jo as his frenemy – he got to hear all her witty comments that way.

She added a few more things to the ornament, before holding it up, completed. Rafa noticed a proud sort of look on her face – it was a bit contagious, as Rafa felt the need to copy it. He stopped himself, however, instead, focusing on the supplies on the table. “Well?” Jo demanded, her tact gone. “What are you making?”

Rafa already knew he was going to have fun with this. “Well,” he started rather arrogantly, grabbing a glass orb, “I will have you know that my next piece of art will surely make it into some famous gallery.” He took the glitter – spilling it all over the table – and poured the little he had maintained into the orb, shaking it up good. Then, he stuck in some pine needles, along with some loose cotton. When he finally finished, his ornament looked a confusing sight – it looked incredibly chaotic, but still, somehow, held an air of beauty. “It’s called – erm – “ he rubbed his neck, searching for something to call it. Nothing came to mind. It was then he noticed how much glitter was on his hands – he had made a rather large mess. “I don’t know,” he finished quickly, his grin only growing. “Here, you name it!” he quickly passed it to her, transferring the stickiness and glitter-invested ornament to his frenemy.

Wren was bored.
She had nothing to do, all her home work was finished and she surprisingly had no classes to go to. This was un heard of. She had been going strong for the past couple of months trying to engross herself in the Wizarding World. No matter how hard she tried she could not get above an E, granted that was pretty good she just though if she put her mind to it she could do a bit better and get an O. In the muggle grades she was a pretty good student, she thought. She had made all A's (which was the best there)

Since she was bored and wandering Wren decided that she would just take a walk and go look around the school more, as she had not had a lot of time to do that before. She started wandering around and before she new it she was in the Great hall witnessing a 'roasting battle' (as the muggles would call it) between surprisingly two people she new pretty well. Rafael D'Spacito and Jo Morgan the leader of a club she attended. They were both nice people to her, but it was pretty obvious to Wren they didn't get along very well.

Rafa was the type of person, that you either got along with well or really just didn't. Jo obviously didn't, though Wren could see that Rafa was just messing with Jo a bit. they were making some pretty good 'roasts' though. The type Wren had always wanted the ability to think up off the top of her head.

She finally noticed after watching them roast each other, that they were making ornaments together. Wren decided to go up to them and ask if she could join them.

"Hey Jo, Rafa! Fancy seeing you all here! I was wondering if I could join you all in making the ornaments? Please? I think you all were some of the people that signed up to do the ornaments for the teachers I think, but correct me if I am mistaken.

Without waiting for an answer, Wren picked up one of the empty balls and started stuffing it with some of the stuffers. 9she really didn't know what to call them)

"Oh, Jo! I forgot about something! I have some more really pretty ribbons and things in the dorm rooms! I was wondering if I could help contribute to the cause by letting all of us use them! Since your busy, I guess I'll just go ahead and get them.

Wren ran out the doors to the great hall and after being told from one of the portraits on the wall not to run, started fast walking. She then made it to the dorms opened her trunk up and took out the ribbon her mom had given her before she left for Hogwarts. She thought it was one of the prettiest things she had seen in her life and decided to use it now cause it wen to a good cause. She also took out the rest of her craft supplies, and began putting them in a bag to take back to the great hall, for herself, Rafa and Jo.

After she had gathered all her things she started to fast walk back to the great hall. Once she had arrived back there she dumped her bag of supplies onto the table with all the others. Her pile really added a lot to it! She was pretty proud of herself.

"Hey, guys is this ok?" she asked sure that it would probably be fine. "I really hope I'm not intruding on anything here though. Oh and Jo could you pass the scissors?" she asked as she needed to cut the ribbon into smaller pieces to make fringe on her ornament.

“I will have you know that my next piece of art will surely make it into some famous gallery.”
All of the other students could say goodbye to using glitter, because this idiot has just caused a snowstorm. Jo frantically tried to sweep the sparkles into small mounds, but it was no use. The glitterpocalypse simply spread itself around the table, sliding into every crevice in the table.

Rafa was adding a curious amalgamation of cotton and pine needles to the ornament, which he chucked at her. She couldn’t help but stifle a snicker. Oops - it came out. She was definitely laughing now.

“A museum? Trust me, that’s going nowhere except for the rubbish bin. It isn’t even worthy of a name at this point.”

She unscrewed the top and poured out all of the contents without even asking for his permission. Then, she dipped her finger into the blue glitter and thinly spread it out towards the top. Next, she began to break off tiny wads of the cotton and twist them on a toothpick before sticking a few together and gluing them to the glitter. Jo worked silently, ignoring Rafa even if he did say something. Rafael had nothing to do with this now - it was just her and the tools. She rather liked the design of the ornament, but since Rafa had the wisdom of a large burlesque turnip it was never going to happen how he’d probably wanted it.

The girl wordlessly dipped a bit of the cotton in green dye before pushing it to the bottom of the clear glass orb. The sprig of pine stood upright in the cotton - just like a tree standing on grass.

Jo scooped up the white powder with her fingers - getting it everywhere (even onto Rafa’s robes) and began to sprinkle it over the “grass” and “tree.”

It was at that moment that she heard a familiar voice behind her. Wren Caster, one of the newer members of the Acid Pop Club.
Hey Jo, Rafa! Fancy seeing you all here! I was wondering if I could join you all in making the ornaments? Please? I think you all were some of the people that signed up to do the ornaments for the teachers I think, but correct me if I am mistaken.
Jo opened her mouth to greet the lively chatterbox, but was far too late.
Oh, Jo! I forgot about something! I have some more really pretty ribbons and things in the dorm rooms! I was wondering if I could help contribute to the cause by letting all of us use them! Since your busy, I guess I'll just go ahead and get them.
Jo opened her mouth again to greet her, but the Gryffindor had disappeared.

She spoke to Rafa, but her hands were still moving, shredding cotton at lightning speed. “Yeah… I don’t know if you know Wren, but that’s pretty normal. She does that during meetings, too.”

Smiling, she returned her attention fully to the task at hand - suspending small bits of white cotton towards the top of the orb with clear fishing wire. She was going to beautify this damn ornament if it was the last thing she did. It wasn’t out of service to Rafa that she did so- this was basically her ornament now. Besides, it was a good chance to one-up him, something he’d probably hate later. She was just being a show-off, really.

Jo began to roll a piece of yellow clay between her fingers, making it into a ball that she rolled in - you guessed it - yellow glitter. She poked a hole through the top, put it on some fishing wire, and screwed the cap back on.

Now she finally addressed the boy, who was flabbergasted at her talent - she was quite sure.

“I made it better.” She told him, relishing the fact that to her at least it was true. “It’s a tree with snow on it, and there are clouds and the sun on top. I’m going to call it Slice of Life because it’s the perfect imprint of a beautiful, untouched winter day. It’s a slice of life without any kind of magic or any kind of danger - no signs of humans even - just a mundane, ordinary day in nature. It’s like a moment frozen and encased in glass so it’ll never get hurt or destroyed. Look, it’s finally something that can’t be ruined. By you. That’s not a challenge, by the way.”

She chucked the ornament back at him while making a whooshing noise with her lips as Wren returned from wherever the hell she had gone.
Hey, guys is this ok? I really hope I'm not intruding on anything here though. Oh and Jo could you pass the scissors?
Jo grabbed the scissors and handed them to her. “Wren! I didn’t know you were going to be here too - I thought it was just Saoirse. I also don’t know why Rafa is here, but hey, there’s that too. Thanks for bringing so much stuff! I’m pretty sure Rafa would love a pretty pink ribbon to go on his ornament.”

Jo tried hard to keep a straight face, which made it all the more funnier. She grabbed another empty ornament and began to juggle it from one hand to another.

“Hmmm…. What should I make next?”

Wren stifled a laugh. It was pretty obvious that that Rafa probably didn't like being told he would probably like a pretty pink ribbon on his ornament.

"No problem! I had a lot of stuff in my crafting box cause I looove making things and decided I would obviously let other people use my ribbons and such!!! I'm super exited to see how everything turns out though Allof us are going to do amazing ornaments. Rafa" she turned to the boy, "Your's will I'm sure be worthy enough to be put in a museum. Jo, " she turned back to the girl, "your's will be amazing too! When we are done no one will be saying they are not crafty."

Wren decided she would finish out the fringes on her ornament and add some pom poms, and some pretty pink glitter with it. She was going for a skirted type ornament. So far it was working out. The ornament was coming together quite well Wren thought. the glue she was using to put the fringes on was hiding itself pretty well and it really didn't look messy.

"Jo! Guess What?!?" she turned to her friend, whispering in her ear. "I figured out the best nickname for Saoirse!!! You might or might not like it..." Wren giggled, realizing the nickname she was going to give the hated Saoirse, was probably not going to blow over well with Jo, but as Wren was Wren, she really didn't care. "She should be the B-girl, b standing for the word I'm sure you know." Wren giggled again turning back to her work, kind of remorseful for saying that about Saoirse. After the incedent that put Rafa in the hospital Wren was very against the girl.

"Hey Rafa, um how is um your..." she pointed to his chest wondering or not if he had told Jo or not or if he wanted Jo to know. "I'm sorry for talking a lot or for offending anyone" she eyed Jo warily, "That's just the way I am you know?"

Saoirse rushed down the hall, she was freaking out immensely. Jo was probably already done, gah! She was horrible friend, the redhead began cursing in Gaelige, she was already tongue tied today. Her arms were killing her, and spickets of blood were dropping again, she had no real time to clean them off though. She had a job to do, her arms began to ache even more as the large box of ornaments shook.

Saoirse managed to reach the Great Hall soon enough, though her heart sank when she did. Jo, and...ugh! "Cén fáth! Aon Gryfinddors eile seachas iad!(Why! Any other Gryfinddors!)" other than them" The redhead froze, her hair shaded to a jet black in an attempt to keep her dignity, the now blackheaded girl took a deep breath and approached the table where they were setting up. "Hey, Jo!" Saoirse took a deep breath and steadily walked towards them, "I have some other ornáidí!" The pain was too great, Saoirse nearly dropped the box on the floor. Tears rolled down her cheeks and flooded her eyes, in defeat she wiped them off and took out an ornament, it was shiny with light pink and blue stained accent and bright, silver hook. Saoirse took and placed it on the tree, she looked over at Rafael once again remorse in her eyes and whispered a quiet mix between 'help me' and 'I'm sorry' before going to get another bauble.

Jo snorted at Wren’s comment about the snarky young Hufflepuff. She certainly couldn’t disagree with the assessment.
"Hey Rafa, um how is um your...? I'm sorry for talking a lot or for offending anyone. That's just the way I am you know?"
She frowned. Obviously there was a strange shared secret between the two - one that they didn’t want her knowing about.

A noise behind her. Jo turned around and was met with a familiar face, but an unfamiliar head.

“Saoirse! I didn’t know you were a metamorphmagus.” she breathed, admiring the girl’s new hair shade.
“Hey, Jo! I have some other ornáidí!"
The girl spoke the last word in a strange language, but Jo didn’t have the time to decipher it as the next thing she knew, Saoirse was crying. It didn’t matter how bitchy the girl was during meetings - she was obviously in need of some help.

Jo beckoned for her to sit, but Saoirse seemed not to notice, hanging a pre-made ornament on the tree. Oh fuck - the girl’s arms were bleeding.

Jo stood up, brushing aside a plastic poinsettia flower that fell to the ground.

“Sit down, Saoirse. You’re hurt. I can see it.” Jo frantically began to rummage in her purse for some band-aids.

Suddenly, the black-haired Hufflepuff looked at Rafa, and the imploring gaze made Jo stop short. The girl’s mouth moved, but barely any sound came out.

Indeed there was some secret between all of them - a secret that she wasn’t about to find out no matter how she pried. There was a fight before - she knew that much.

“This is the Great Hall. Today we are going to be civil to each other.”

A look of stern authority glinted in the Gryffindor’s eye, letting everyone else know she wasn’t playing around. Jo knew she wasn’t strong enough to stop a fight, but if she could stop one from happening, she would.

Saoirse hissed, "I'm fine, Jo. I'm just here to help" she looked over at Wren with a glare in her eyes. She knew full well that nobody except Jo wanted her, and even then, maybe Jo wasn't interested in having her here. It made Saoirse reflect on the fact they thought she was no longer human, and just a monster, she had written to her father and told him what had happened and he said 'stay away' but she couldn't. She mumbled under her breath, "ar a laghad, phioc mé suas i ndiaidh dúinn(at least I picked up after us)." Rolling her eyes she picked up another ornament and brushed Jo away, maybe if she was lucky enough she could paint the ornament with her blood, maybe that would make Rafael and Wren happy. They were b's, who held too many grudges it was stupid.

The girl looked over at everybody else, who were staring daggers at her. The silence was deafening but at the same time it made Saoirse relax, and Jo's statement helped a little considering the fact that Wren would probably sit there and curse her out if she could. Saoirse nodded towards Jo and grabbed another ornament, placing it on a tree before walking over to Rafael, "hey, how do you feel?"
