Thana looked around as she sat down at a table that oddly didn’t have many people.  She sat down and seemed to relax.  It had been a while since she decided to relax in the great hall and merely watch everyone or simple enjoy the sounds of others chatting away.  She soon took out her writing notebook and looked through some of the story ideas that she had.  She didn’t have many since she had also been trying to deal and most likely catch up in classes.  Although it didn’t bug her.

“I wonder what may happen today.  Maybe make some new friends or bond with someone that has the same interests or goals.” She wondered aloud to herself.  She didn’t really care I’d others may think she was a tad bit crazy.  Especially with she spoke to herself.  Although he parents always told her it was fine to talk to herself as long as she didn’t respond back to sometning she said.  Though she doubted her parents really minded.  She continued to look through her notebook trying to figure out what kind of story she should write.  That was always one thing she had trouble with.  Trying to write a stroy that may have some sorta of meaning or otherwise.

Mara hurried into the Great Hall, hoping to grab a quick lunch before her first Potions class. Though she was thrilled to finally start learning Potions (a subject her Muggle papa affectionately called “Wizard Chemistry”), she couldn’t help but cast an envious glance at the glorious sunshine spilling in from the front lawn. It was such a beautiful day for football – or even Quidditch, if she could figure out a way to convince her head of house that she deserved a spot on the team even as a first year.

Passing the Ravenclaw table, Mara had to fight down another surge of jealousy. She should have been in the house of scholars just like her dad, but the Sorting Hat had other ideas, calling her “more driven” than Aidan.

Mara was about to grab an empty seat at the Slytherin table when a girl at the Ravenclaw table caught her eye. The girl had black hair with red tips, just like Mara’s friend Sadie from her local football league. I should email– I mean, write a letter– to Sadie, Mara thought absently, feeling a pang of homesickness.

The girl was hunched over an open notebook, seemingly lost in thought. Mara hesitated, then looked at her watch. She had some time to kill before Potions, and there was food at the Ravenclaw table as well…

Mara tapped the girl on the shoulder and smiled.

“Hi, I’m Mara!” she said. “I like your hair – reminds me of a friend of mine.”

Mara craned her neck to get a peek at the girl’s notebook. “What are you working on? Homework?” She tried not to sound too excited. No one in her own House would take her seriously if she acted too thrilled about the possibility of extra studying.

"So much universe, so little time."
