Books and Bump-ins
How lovely the castle was! It was near to the Holidays, and the glimmering garnishes of holly and pine were enough to make even the least festive person feel a tad bit of Christmas spirit. The large Christmas trees were a welcome reminder that the end of term was coming faster by the day, and that Eris was closer by the minute to finally going to visit the Harringtoms for the Holidays. How wonderful would that be!? If only she could survive the end of term tests that were suddenly building up. How stupid to take tests right before break. Sighing, Eris looked down at the pile of papers bundled in her arms, ripe for studying. There were tons of new professors, and they all seemed to be strict in the hopes that rules would make them out to be better teachers. Rules did not make a teacher. The lessons did, and Eris was pleasantly happy with most of her lessons. Even though her attention span had fried. She might not have ever been an adapt student, but lately, she found it easy to zone out in class and focus on things that seemed all encompassing and important to the small child.
The things Eris Fawley found important were, now more than ever, quidditch, the vanquishing of evil in her quest to be the next Harry Potter, and talking to friends. Grades mattered in the sense that she would need them to be an auror, but there was also hope that she could be an auror without good grades. She was a metamorphmagus after all, and hadn’t the Ministry let a bunch of Hogwarts kids be aurors after they fought in the battle of Hogwarts? Shrugging, Eris flung her books across the tables in the Great Hall in a fit of despair.
What the heck was a wand rune and why did it matter? Why couldn’t she learn about something interesting...like how to fight dementors or whatever those evil shadow things were called. Or how to ride dragons. Those were the things she would need in the world. Not even things that amazing. Maybe just something like a new spell or two to tide her over. Learning a spell that could beat up idiots would be fun. Not that she wasn’t fine with using her fists and legs, but she was a witch! Witches were supposed to use magic for their problems. That’s why they were witches, not muggles.
Realizing she was caught up in her head, Eris frowned and started to look for the books she had flung across the Great Hall. It was after dinner, and there weren’t many children. However, some were lingering, either to finish meal, talk to friends, or study. Most people studied in the study room or their common rooms, but Eris had found that the Great Hall was a beautiful place to study in, what with the break coming soon.
The large Christmas trees emitted a wondrous smell of pine, which reminded Eris of the holidays back at home. Even though her mother was undeniable a horrible person, there was still a sense of safety and comfort when Eris thought about the Holidays at their small flat. They were fake memories, but they were memories nonetheless. The christmas baubles were bright and large, and the chatters of other students made Eris feel safe. Sure, the common room was equally nice to study in, but Eris had opted for the Great Hall. Most likely because she was tired from secretly attempting to train for Quidditch and found herself growing more and more lazy. Going to the Great Hall and studying there prevented her from walking up the stairs for a few hours, and there were more people there.
Hopefully one of them would strike up a conversation and help Eris forget about studying. Books one and two were found by the Ravenclaw tables, but the third book was by the Slytherin table. Groaning at the prospect of being around the purebloods and the members of the house her family had so desperately wanted her in. The house her mother had been in. She hadn’t many friends in Slytherin, not any really. Katya had left the school wand was hardly a friend. Nonetheless, Eris walked up to the table.
"Have you seen a book?" She asked one of the girls, tense. Not wanting to add that she had thrown it, Eris simply crossed her arms.

Books and Bump-ins

The Great Hall was quiet this evening, especially on the Slytherin Table. Across from her was the Ravenclaw table, that sat a few students with their faces hidden away in their books. Across from them would be the ‘Mighty Gryffindors'. There sat a few groups, some eating in groups, chatting, and others alone minding their own business. Next sat the Hufflepuffs, but before any recognition could have been made from Falentra, her gaze made its way to a girl. A girl that raised from the Gyriffindors bench. Hair as bright as fire. Curls that danced around on their own free will with her movement. Again, it mimicked as to how a fire would. Who was see and why hadn't she seen her around before? The hair was surely going to make her stand out to some extent. Maybe it was just Falentra not observing as much as she liked to have. She knew she was to up her game now when it came to watching those her around her.
Falentra sat at the end of the table, just so if anyone was to sit next to her it could have only been from one side. The less the company, the better. Despite the fact that the Great Hall was one of the busiest places to go, the evenings were when it was the quietest. Everyone was just too tired from a full day of studying, stressing and running around for their classes. Whereas for Falentra, is was the opposite. Being laid back had its perks, such as not getting stressed as easily, or not feeling rushed on getting to classes on time. See, because she was a loner, it meant that she was able to plan out her day ahead knowing no friends will be around to hold her back or distract her.
There were a few students not far from her on the opposite side of the table, muttering under their breaths and giggling every now and then. The redhead seemed to be heading towards that way, towards the group of Slytherins. She was hugging a bunch of notes and books close to her. A teacher's pet maybe or just an eager child that wanted to succeed.
Both ears and eyes were focused only on the little Gryffindor. Everything else seemed to have muted itself off for a second. A book? There were plenty of books around here, so she needed to be more specific.
Whilst the group of Slytherins seemed to brush off the question by Eris, Falentra was debating on whether or not to interrupt with some sarcasm to ease or lighten the mood. But if she was too, she knew that she was to have gotten the girls full attention, and for god knows how long.
Long bony fingers ran along the smooth leather edges of her own book, one based on Transfigurations. It was her favoured subject, so she carried it with her pretty much everywhere she went. It was a good way for her to get out of a conversation, or if she ever felt awkward, she could just pull it out and start reading to keep her mind at ease.
Who knew if it had been two minutes, or five. However long it had been, it was starting to get awkward and Falentra had started to feel slightly sorry for this Gryffindor. She was waiting for an answer that none of them was willing to give. People saw the majority of Slytherins as rude and cruel, but there were ways about going it. They could have at least told her to get lost or something. '' 'ey. Don't stand around that bunch of ignorant gits. You'll get nothin' from them except makin' yourself a complete idiot. ''She made a gesture with her hand, briefly waving it over to her direction. A quiet sigh quickly left her lips as she mentally prepared herself for a conversation. '' What ya lookin' for? You said a book but you need to be more specific. '' Her eyes narrowed and she took a quick glance at all the books she was carrying. It seemed she had enough on her at that moment in time, so why want more. She was struggling with the load anyway but didn't plan on getting up to help her. Instead, she remained seated and kept an arm over her own book just in case it was the book she was wanting.

Sizable. They were all taller than her, looming down upon Eris like aeroplanes crashing in from above. She, naturally, felt the urge to run. A sane person would have ran from the horde of leering snakes, but Eris was not sensible. Slightly and small, she made for a laughable sight, as the laughter and rude jeers only grew. Her discarded book was under the table somewhere, but Eris couldn’t see through the feet. If she hadn’t been wearing robes, she would have crawled around the ground under their feet to hunt for the missing textbook, but the feeling of having feet press down against her wasn’t one that Eris was in the particular mood for, and nor was she in the mood for having a scuffle with the dust under the table.
Robes falling to the floor, clearly too large for her, she balled up the extra fabric, rolling up her sleeves without taking her amber eyes off of the slytherin table. She wasn’t waiting out of patience. She needed her book, and there was no patient bone in her body. Either they gave her the book, or she would risk exposing her underclothing by rolling around under the table. They could try to kick her. She could headbutt quite well.
Her head angled to the side, in a look of sullen condeplation, as her body tensed. Instead of running, her body tensed for a fight. Her hands twitched at her sides, curling into fists, as she prepared for some kind of fight. Instincts pushing her forward, Eris’ lips curved upwards into a matching jeer, as the waves of laughter filled her with a vindictive light. One more laugh and she would smash the face of the nearest snake in. The girl was stressed as it was, and there was little understanding left in her small body. She wasn’t good at anything, but found a relief in fighting. When she was in action, whether it was being hit or hitting someone, she didn’t have to focus on the time she had failed at fighting someone and felt the crushing defeat burn through her skin, quite literally.
One girl spoke, her soft voice chafing against the waves of violence, as Eris turned to look at the person. Studying Falentra and her locks of black hair, Eris’ own hair seemed to glow even brighter, spittingly red. It looked like fire, itself. Being a metamorphmagus and being angry were two things that did not go well together, as the flickering red flames of Eris’ hair looked about to scald and burn the whole table, and the pale girl whose hair was, by far, the only part of her that looked healthy.
Eris had lost weight. Already skinny, she looked like a wraith-like creature. Lack of eating and nightmares had taken a toll on the small girl, but she seemed not to notice. Furrowing her brows, Eris leveled a stare at the speaker, a girl she recognized as a fellow second year. Never having talked much to her, Eris only recognized her as an avid fan of transfiguration under professor Sergei, whose presence was fleeting. Alas, even the best professors seemed to leave Hogwarts behind.
Understandably, Eris would have left Hogwarts if she could. She held no ill-will against those who had left. Smoothing out the strands of her hair, as the vibrant color swirled and calmed down, Eris tilted her head to the side and looked at the slytherins like they were idiots. Had they really not seen her book fly under their godforsaken table? Huh. If they were that unobservant, no wonder they were complete trash at quidditch.
“I don’t look like a complete idiot.” She answered, face heating up again. “For your information, I’m only a little bit of an idiot. My grades are perfectly fine.” She blurted out, impulsivity and recklessness caring her forward, when goodwill and nerves couldn’t. “And besides, I’m not the one who missed the book being flung under my table. They’d all have to be quite daft to miss a book flung under the table. Must be why your quidditch sucks so much. Reckon the whole bloody house besides yourself is about as observant as a hippogriff on bedrest.” She crossed her arms, stack of books still on the floor, letting out a breath of hot air, chin stuck up in the air in the typical pose of a haughty person.
Which book had she thrown under the Slytherin table? Eris had no idea, and quite frankly, was now thinking more about the people in front of her. “A book. It’s under the table somewhere. Think it’s a defense against the dark arts one. Dunno. I threw them everywhere. It’s bloody stupid. The studying, I mean. Not the book.”
She spoke a lot for one so small. It was as if the words she spoke filled up the space that a taller person could have been in, and the lilting sound of her voice boomed louder than one would expect from a girl as short and limber as a frightened doe. “What rubbish. Tests right before the holidays. Sucks the Holiday spirit right outta you. Or, at least sucks the spirit outta me. I swear, honestly. I really hate the new professors for putting us through that. Bunch of bloody gits. I miss Professor Wright’s lakeside adventures and Professor Yor- Sergei’s” She still couldn’t say the name of the grizzled old man, and had forgotten how to say it completely after his absence. “Hatred for me. Really lightened up the mood, you know?”
The prospect of talking to a new person brought Eris such joy that once she started talking, she could hardly stop. Isolated and often lonely, it was such a thrill to meet someone else. Even if they had, comparability, called her an idiot. Uncrossing her arms and looking upwards, Eris waited patiently to see if her ramble would be reciprocated or if the other girl was as boring and pompous as all Slytherins had to be.

Was this little fireball really going to start a fight, on her own, with a group of Slytherins over a book? She couldn’t have been serious, surely? Unsure on whether or not to intervene, Falentra simply leant forward and raised one of her brows in amusement whilst leaning against her houses table. The girl had guts, but stupid ones. Ones that were going to make herself look a fool, despite the strong demeanour she was clearly showing.
There was no way Falentra was truly going to sit back and enjoy the show. She was cruel, yes, and heartless at times, but this wasn’t a fair fight. Calling the red-head an idiot may have not been the right choice of words, but at least it got her attention and drew her away from the others, but before she knew it, she had started to regret it from the moment Eris started talking.
It had seemed forever, but in reality, it was probably a few minutes before silence came between them. She had listened, partly, to the parts that had actually mattered. In fact, Falentra couldn’t help but chuckle faintly under her breath, a small smile briefly appearing across her lips. Her hand covered her smile, somewhat self-conscious of it for she barely ever smiled enough for it to feel right.
“Uhuh.” There was nothing else for her to say really other than that. She could have argued back in defence for Eris calling out her House, but in all honesty, she cared nothing for Quidditch or for her peers. Besides, Falentra wasn't one for using her mouth during an argument, she just stuck to what she knew best, and that was using her fists.
Not only that but to argue with the Gryffindor just seemed like too much effort. If it meant she could let the Gryffindor feel as though she had won in the petty rant then, by all means, Falentra wasn’t planning on stopping her or taking away her proudness from the speech, if she was to feel it, that is.
Transfigurations were indeed her favoured subject and come to think of it, this girl had crossed her mind once before. Eris Fawley, she thought to herself. She was a Metamorphmagus, right? ... That explains the anger issues. It would be interesting to see how far Falentra could push the other into seeing what she was capable of. But there was always another time for her to play that card.
She thought a while longer to herself before realising the silence had started to have it awkward effects. She had to say something else other than ‘uhuh’. The Slytherins boney pale fingers tapped gently against the book she was covering, then inhaling deeply before she was about to speak more than she wanted to. “I think I might have a book you are looking for over here..” She leant back slightly and removed her arms from her own books, now revealing them all to her. There were a few on Transfigurations, in fact, almost all of them were apart from the odd one on Potions. She didn’t have those ones because she enjoyed the subject. They were there to help her. But nobody had to know that... “Take your pick. I’ll take the one under the table if I have the same one up 'ere in my pile.”
Within the time of Falentra talking briefly to the Gryffindor, her dark brown hues never once made eye contact with the others. She wasn’t scared of her in the slightest, it was just that it made things more awkward on her behalf, plus the fact that eyes reveal things, emotions that you don’t want to show so easily. The dark circles under her eyes were likely to draw any attention away anyway or make others somewhat uncomfortable being around her. She didn’t mind it, if it meant her being alone then by all means, stare away, just make sure she doesn’t catch you staring too long.
