The night was young when Max made his way to the Great Hall, long purposeful strides and severe frown discouraging anyone from leaping out to scare him. He wasn’t accustomed to doing anything festival-wise in October (his parents only ever celebrated Christmas, and his last October in Hogwarts had been spent alone) so this whole thing was a relatively new experience. He was still trying to adjust to it, but he found he quite enjoyed the idea of scaring the wits out of unsuspecting first- and second-years. Tossing the apple he’d brought from dinner earlier in the air, he kept his hands as busy as he could so he wouldn’t be tempted to touch his face and smear the white decorating it.

From what he’d read, the holiday of Halloween had originated from a Celtic festival called Samhain, and since the Celt’s had celebrated their New Year on the first of November, October 31st to them had been the ‘death’ of the old year. Chilly and bitter with the nights beginning to blend into the days earlier and earlier, it was this time of year that the Celts had thought the line between living and dead became blurred. They’d built bonfires and burned crops and animals in sacrifice to keep the dead on the correct side of the line, dressing up in costumes and attempting to tell each other’s fortunes since they’d believed their priests could make better predictions with all the unworldly spirits stirring up magic in the air…

Of course, it was all a load of hogwash. ‘Unworldly’ spirits weren’t just around on Halloween, and they often tended more towards the annoying than the mystic. But Max could appreciate the sentiment for something fantastical behind the legends - muggles seemed to come up with the best stories to compensate for their lack of magic, often painting more magical pictures than the regulated, law-filled world of genuine magic.

Tucking one hand in his pocket and continuing to toss the apple with the other - the one that had just had the cast removed - he finally reached the Great Hall and found a satisfactory piece of wall to settle his back against, crossing one leg over the other as he waited a little ways from the other groups in his appointed area. His face had been meticulously decorated to look like a skull, charcoal black standing out in stark contrast against the icy blue of the eyes it encircled. More of the stuff hollowed his cheeks, and white made his skin look chalky even in the small pool of shadow he stood in. The only thing that ruined the illusion of a skull was the way his mouth had been decorated; rather than drawn-on teeth, string appeared to go into his skin around his lips in a garish imitation of a mouth being sewn shut. There would be no talking tonight, at least from him.

Curling his hand in his pocket, he touched paper to make sure it was still there before nodding in satisfaction to himself. The riddles he’d planned weren’t overly tricky, but he had no doubt interesting things would happen regardless of whether or not the students got them right. The last time he’d talked to someone - or multiple someone’s, as it were - had been specifically about this event. The poor, unsuspecting students would certainly be surprised when -

But no. They couldn’t catch him smirking to himself, and it would tug at the string if he attempted to do anything more than slightly part his lips. Forcing his expression to remain neutral, he put the future of the night at the back of his mind; tonight he was the Celtic priest who knew what would happen but would keep it to himself. Didn’t want to bring angry spirits down on him or whatnot. There was nothing more to set up or consider, from now on it would all be a waiting game.

OOC Note:
I'll wait for you all to make posts to introduce yourselves to each other before I make my next post, at which point Max will hand the five of you a riddle that leads to a location somewhere in the castle.

Amongst yourselves (either in owls, discord, in this thread, or whichever other mode of communication you prefer) you must figure out the answer. Once you figure it out, only one of you must post in this thread your guess (decide amongst yourselves). I won't tell you whether it's wrong or right, rather I'll just make a thread in the location you guessed and things will happen in that place according to whether you got it right or wrong.

Keep in mind that this adventure happens over the course of one day (in rp); however, ooc-ly it may take longer. If someone doesn't post within a week (by October 22nd), it will be assumed that person didn't show up and the adventure may continue on without them so that no one is holding their peers up.

Oktoberfest was never-ending with one event after another, but Bloom absolutely loved it. She needed to keep her mind focused and having these events were helping her do just that. Granted, she was not studying as much as she would like because she was often a part of the social scene. Bloom needed more friends and what more than to really delve into these events? She already met Amadea and Arthur from Hufflepuff and Elijah from Slytherin.

Bloom had already partook in the tasting and mixing tents as well as the baking. She could not wait for the trick or treating. She wondered what it could entail as Hogwarts would probably do more than just getting candy. Knowing the school and what they believe in, they think that earning your way to getting candy is how it should be.

Earlier in the day, Bloom had gotten an owl from Max Avery, the Head Boy of the school. He was also in Gryffindor house. He was the leader of their group which was group seven. She wondered who would be in the group with her as so many people signed up for this event. She was lucky enough to have had room to play. In the letter it mentioned to go to the Great Hall when the night was young. Shrugging, she figured that it was after dinner when the sun was setting into the mountains.

Bloom, in her uniform along with her blue and black robe stepped into the Great Hall. She saw a few stragglers from dinner, but her attention was caught by the Gryffindor second year leaning against the wall. He seemed calm. It made her nervous. What was in store for her? For her group?

Walking towards Avery, she gave an awkward smile, "Hi, I'm Bloom Silverton," she said, introducing her name just in case he did not know. It was also for the sake of attendance as it was important to be on time or to at least appear for any event that one signed up for. Looking around, it seemed that she was the first to arrive. It was almost like with the baking event. She was the first to arrive, waiting for a partner. (And out of all the partners that could arrive, it was none other than Ben Eckenrode, her ex boyfriend.) Luckily, that wouldn't happen again, but still, sometimes she just hated being early or the first one to arrive for that reason.

Tina trudged down the corridors leading to the Great Hall. It was filled with Halloween decorations, depicting hallow pumpkins, black bats, and glowing skeletons. She was unfazed by them since she had seen them multiple times before. She's been celebrating Halloween with her parents or years and enjoyed being frightened. However, over the years, she gained a better immunity to all the typical Halloween tricks.

That's why she signed up for the Trick or Treat. She hoped Hogwarts would add a new element to scare, exposing her to something new. She wanted to feel goosebumps up her arms, shivers down her spine and her feet to be paralyzed by terror. She couldn't help but to wonder who would be in her group and wanted to be with her friends. Despite her eccentric behavior and he difficulty to "fit in", she's managed to make a few fiends in every house. She just wished she had the capability of speaking to the older students, but she was afraid that they would look down on her for being in a different year, even though she was the same age as many of them.

When she arrived, she was upset to find out she wasn't the first one there. A ravenclaw girl, who looked a little older than her, began to introduce herself to Max Avery, their leader. Feeling anxious, she walked very slowly over to them. With a placid expression, she says, quietly, "I'm Tina Addington."

While waiting for a response, Tina stole some quick glances at the girl, hoping she was a kind person.

The day Devina saw the sign-up sheet for Trick-or-Treating, she excitedly wrote her name down. Trick-or-Treating was her favorite part of October. She loved to have the freedom of dressing up as whatever she wanted. She also liked the candy, as did any other child. Back home, her older brother would take her around the neighborhood. She missed him so much today, wishing he was there to trick-or-treat with her.

This year, trick-or-treating would be different. This year, she would have to earn the candy, with the help of others in her group. She didn't know who was going to be in her group, but she was still excited to meet them.

She made her way to the Great Hall to meet with her group. There were Halloween decorations everywhere and it made Devina smile, waiting for something to pop out and scare her. At the side of the Great Hall, she could see others gathered. She walked over to them with her costume gliding behind her. Through the skull-decorated face paint of someone standing by the wall, she recognized her group's leader, Max Avery. Ad by him, there were two other girls, one of whom she also recognized as Tina from Theatre Arts Club.

Quickly walking over to them, she smiled. "Hey, guys! This is group seven, I hope. Hi Tina." She waved at Tina. "And I don't think we have met before, I'm Devina." Devina smiled and gave her hand out to the other girl standing there.

Interacting with the people present
He was certain that his costume was a joke.

He had received an unusually large box from his sister the other day containing a large, blue onesie and a small note simply stating, "Here's your costume, xoxo Celestine".  He had examined the vibrantly blue costume with a wry grin, shaking his head at his sister's strange sense of humour. The onesie, of course, was of Eeyore- the "depressed donkey", as Celestine had been so fond of calling him. Eeyore was, in Elijah's mind, the utmost relatable character in Christopher Robin's universe, but that didn't mean he was all too excited to wear it.

However, it was still cold out, and the costume would provide some semblance of warmth against the chill in the air. Thus, he found himself heading toward the great hall to meet his trick-or-treating group dressed as a bright blue donkey. That's right, you heard him correctly- trick-or-treating, believe it or not, and he had dressed up, too. He was still a child, after all, and trick-or-treating in an enormous castle seemed to promise some fun, especially if there were some riddles involved.

He loved riddles.

Riddles tested your mind, and its ability to think outside the box, to come up with odd and unusual answers, which he excelled in. Riddles under pressure were even better, where stress was placed upon a participator and their mind would begin to run to the wildest of solutions, even the most illogical ones. Here, in Hogwarts, would yield no such solutions- in a place where nearly everything was possible, nearly everything could be an answer.

The team leader that had been assigned to him would've had to be the boy with the handsome features covered in paint, decorated to look like a skeleton. A brief assessment would show that he was a confident boy from a well-bred family, taking into consideration his posture and his shoes. Yes, his shoes- shoes that were of high-quality, shoes that belonged to a family with money.

Shoes not unlike his own.

Clothing was perhaps the biggest tell when you tried to analyze someone. It showed how they held themselves; someone who cared about how they looked would dress nicer, and would wear clothes to accentuate their strengths and hide their weaknesses. The quality of the clothes would tell you about their family, and how much they were willing to spend on clothes- or, in general, just how much money they had. Of course, in Hogwarts, it was hard to tell with all of the uniforms, which is why he tended to rely on shoes.

There were three other girls present- one he recognized as Bloom Silverton, the second-year Ravenclaw he'd met at the Butterbeer Tasting Tent; a shy looking girl who seemed rather familiar; and a fellow Slytherin he had seen around before but had never really talked to. The Slytherin had flaming red hair and was dressed in a strange, black-and-lacy get-up with cat ears, which he guessed to be her costume. A cat, maybe?

"Good evening, Bloom," he said quietly, addressing the only familiar face in the group in particular, making direct eye contact with her. "Good evening, Tina; Devina." Good manners were the epitome of making a good first impression, which would lead to a good relationship, which would simply be beneficial to all parties involved. It was just simple logic.

Introductions were also in order, as he reminded himself. "I'm Elijah Huang, if you haven't met me yet." It was doubtful that any of them would remember his face, save for Bloom, considering that his main goal was to blend into the background a majority of the time. Planting an almost-genuine smile on his face, he glanced around at the group, excited to the night's events to start.

He was sure that tonight would be a night he wouldn't forget.

Bloom saw that there were a couple more people that were entering the Great Hall. Each one had their own outfit that they brought from home to dress up in. One was Eeyore from the Muggle show, Winnie the Pooh and another was dressed in a black dress with flowery headband. Unfortunately, Bloom did not have a costume. On top of that, her parents were unable to afford one for her to have. So her being in her uniform was the best that she could do. In a way, she could say that he's dressed as an educated witch?

She wished that her family was able to afford, but they were working in minimum wage and having luxury items was different especially with an overall of four kids. Just recently, in the summer, Bloom's parents had adopted a baby boy. She could not believe that even though they scrounge for money for rent and other things needed, they would adopt a baby. Though little did Bloom know that there was a large tale that followed the reason-- one that was dark and unknown to not only her, but her sisters too.

The person in the Eeyore costume looked familiar. Bloom wondered where she had met him. Perhaps in the corridor? It wasn't until he spoke to her that helped remind her when she met him. It was during the tasting tent the last Oktoberfest event took place. She remembered that for a Slytherin, he was exceptionally nice. Bloom smiled and waved at him. Unfortunately, she forgot his name-- hopefully she would figure it out shortly.

"Ready to go trick or treating?" she asked to the Slytherin first year, starting small talk. Bloom, smiling, was wondering what was going to happen. Only in Hogwarts would they take the term "trick and treating" literally. Earning their treat was the motto of the school no matter what.

Tina felt a little suffocated by the entrance of more members. Too many people in one area always made her feel out of place. With all the animated costumes that the other members of the group were wearing, she felt quite bland and plain. She had worn her long wavy bright red hair in pigtails and put on her usual big black geek glasses over her big gold doe yes instead of her orange ones. She had on a black, cowl neck sweater with white jeans that had bell bottoms and small, laced, dark brown boots. She decided that if anyone asked, she’ll tell them she was a disco dancer on break.

When she saw Devina, she was happy that she at least knew somebody. She made sure to wave at her when she greeted her and complimented her costume. She liked how the dress contrasted with her hair, but she fit her all the same. When the Slytherin boy named Elijah arrived, she admired his costume from a distance. She liked how he wore something unique and unconventional. She was surprised when he greeted her by her name as she had only seen him in the halls once in a while. Out of sincere respect, she greeted him back formally.

Since she didn’t want to stand idle and do nothing until the event began, so she walked over to Devina and asked, “What are you looking forward to?”

Leaving his dorm at the appointed time, Arthur made his way to the Great Hall to the meeting spot for Group 7 of the Trick or Treat event.

He was excited about the evening's activities, even if it didn't seem like it was going to be exactly how you usually saw it on TV. He'd never been trick or treating before. People didn't really 'trick or treat' on his street in London. Unless you took the 'tricks' to mean vandalism and ‘treats’ as... Not getting vandalized? He supposed? He'd always liked Halloween though, nonetheless. There was usually a costume party at school and some good horror flicks on the tele. But as school children stocked up on cartons of eggs and the police doubled their patrols, they would usually go to a Halloween party at someone's home or at the hospital instead, resigning themselves to clean up whatever mess was made in the morning. The modern practice, involving 'candy' and costumes, had been slow to catch on in some parts of the UK. So he was sure he wasn't alone in that.

He waved a hand as he approached the group of four other students, all arrived before him. A Toothless Hoodie stood in as his low-key costume, if it could even be called that, along with black jeans and beat-up black converse. Fortunately, the range of effort in costumes of the other students was pretty wide. Some of them he'd met already (some just recently) and some he hadn't. "Group 7 right?" he asked, double checking. “I’m Arthur. Hi,” he introduced himself, for those he hadn’t already met (And those he had, as he didn’t expect them to remember his name necessarily).

Devina looked to Tina, who had asked her a question. What was she looking forward to? She knew the answer to the question immediately. "The candy of course! I love to trick-or-treat. Especially back home. I would go with my older brother and we would have so much fun! Although, I am excited to see what type of riddles we get. This should be so fun!"

Mostly everyone in the group wore a simple costume. She looked at the two group members who weren't, Tina and the other girl. She had seen her around the school but had never formally met her until now. Smiling at the two, she asked, "Do you guys have costumes? I'd be happy to lend you guys something for the contest that is at the end of the month." She felt like no one should be left out from the contest to come. Loving to dress up often, Devina had a large variety of clothing and accessories to piece together, and maybe they could have some sort of dress-up party before the contest.

The last member of the group arrived. "Hi! That is a very cool jacket you have." His jacket was the character, Toothless, from a movie she had seen. She looked at the two boys in the group, "I'm Devina by the way." With the entire group present, she was eager to start the Trick-or-Treating. She could feel her urge to eat candy growing. Devina imagined the sweet taste of the hard, chewy, or soft candies. She was most excited to get chocolate. But before getting the candy, they would have to solve the riddles. "So, I guess this is everyone in our group, I think. Can we begin?"

One by one the group trickled in, all in varying stages of costume from no costume at all to fully decked out from head-to-toe. Max watched them carefully, offering solemn nods to those who greeted him but remaining largely distant as they greeted the people they'd be going through tonight's trial with. Perhaps a few of them would even become friends after tonight - brought together by fear and hilarity - but that wasn't for him to decide. He would be doing other things while they hunted his riddles, so it was all up to them now.

Quietly slipping the paper out of his pocket, he watched their interactions, noting that they were friendly for the most part. Bloom - he vaguely recognized her from the previous year, though they'd never interacted - appeared to be a kind Ravenclaw, though her lack of costume made him wonder if she was lacking in love of adventure. The redheaded first year with the golden eyes... she seemed nervous, more reserved than Bloom, and he had to wonder where she'd fit in with this motley crew of people. The second redhead from Slytherin was more bubbly, and Max had to avoid chuckling again because he had a feeling this redhead might be the one to hold everyone together.

The Slytherin boy who introduced himself as Elijah caught Max's attention and he stared for a long moment, recognizing a quiet intelligence and an introduction that screamed pure-blood. The odd costume couldn't hide the manners, and Max made a mental note to keep an eye on that one. The final boy was - surprise, surprise - a Hufflepuff, the House Max had sworn an internal oath to hate in year one. As Head Boy, he really couldn't discriminate against the Houses anymore, but he had to admit that he wouldn't be all that broken up if the first year was absolutely terrified by the end of the night. It was a struggle not to laugh and he quickly stepped forward to hold out the letter he'd neatly inked onto thick, expensive parchment.

Come on out to where we fly,
But not where our colours clash in the sky,
We go here first before the game,
And start out equal, all the same.
But make no mistake, this isn't class,
No professor will stop you from eating grass.

A small, simple one to get them started; the riddles would increase in difficulty, but for now he figured this would do. Without any other instructions, he handed the riddle to the person closest and took a step back, tossing his apple in the air again. Up and down, the colours of his House - a House that wouldn't be represented in his group tonight. He hoped at least some of them had Gryffindor bravery, though, because it might get difficult if they didn't. Giving them all a second to scan over the riddle, he lifted the apple high above his head before they could finish it and begin asking questions.

Without a word, he brought it down hard to smash at his feet, and the surprising sound of glass breaking could be heard through the Hall a moment before he was engulfed in a plume of red smoke. It hung densely in the air for a moment before slowly dispersing, drifting lazily this way and that. By the time it had cleared enough for anyone to see through it, he was gone, leaving behind only pieces of a smashed fruit on the ground where he'd been standing.
