Place: Gryffindor Table
Time: 07:35 AM
Despite the fact that the breakfast time began just five minutes ago, the tables of the great Great Hall were crowded with faces of young and old in crisp, ironed uniforms; ready to begin the day. The tables' surface was adorned with many kinds of breakfast dishes, both Muggle and Wizarding type, including numerous juices - all delicious to fill the stomachs of the students.
Dot, however, wasn't looking forward to filling her stomach as much as she was looking forward for her third Defence Against the Dark Arts class. According to Professor Scheinberg, the students are going to learn and practice the knockback jinx in this class, as well as expand their knowledge on the topic of 'doxies'.
Dot only knew the basic about doxies, and their Ministry classification, also a little about their food habits. But that was all. Before coming to Hogwarts, Dot had learned about the wizarding culture, some spells, how things worked, stuff like that. And she always had her head buried in the textbooks after she bought them, usually Herbology and Astronomy. But that was about it. And lectures were always more informative than books - or equal, maybe, but lectures had unique points authors forget to put in books.
So with an excited smile stretched on her face, Dot plopped down on an empty seat at the Gryffindor Table. Two girls were sitting on either side of her - one with shiny black hair, and other with (familiar) dirty blonde hair. The blonde girl sat all prim and proper, her uniform pressed and neat, just a bit better than Dot's (different between doing chores magically and manually, hmph).
Dot didn't give the blonde girl another glance as she quickly reached for the big bowl of dry, chocolate ball cereal. Putting some on her plate, she passed the bowl to a boy who asked for it, before craning her neck to spot some milk. There was a jug, a bit far from her.
Instead of calling someone to pass it to her, Dot took out her wand and pointed it at the jug, careful not to disturb others or to bring attention to herself. Twisting her wrist in a downward flick, she whisper-yelled, "Wingardium Leviosa!"
The spell worked almost instantly and the jug flew towards her in a slow motion. Catching it in midair, Dot pocketed her wand and poured the milk on her cereal, a smug smile etched on her well-moisturized face.
Once done, Dot reached for her plain, black book bag and opened the zipper. The Defence Against the Dark Arts book was in middle of the other books. Dot took it out and opened it to chapter three, doxies. Then, finally, Dot took her spoon and started eating while she skimmed the text of the book on her lap.
It is a good idea to pre-study while eating, isn't it?

Anastasia had been far more tired than normal that morning and had barely managed to drag herself out of bed at her normal time. She wasn't completely certain as to why, but she suspected it had something to do with her rather eventful Saturday. True, yesterday had been Sunday and she'd been able to rest a fair amount, she was still quite tired. Saturday had been exhausting in just about every sense of the word. She'd started the day with an irritating homework assignment and had snapped at a Ravenclaw who had offered her help. She'd gotten a stomachache after lunch, and she still wasn't totally clear on why or how that had happened and then gone to detention, where she'd snapped at Dot and gotten dirt all over her face. One would think that all that had been enough for one day, but nooooo. She'd then run into Daniel Weaver off all people and snapped at him, then stormed off, run into the Ravenclaw from earlier and snapped at her again for good measure.
Her Sunday had been a bit better, but not much, so she wasn't feeling all too optimistic about the coming week.
She had started a conversation with a fellow Gryffindor about their Charms homework as she'd gotten her food and was continuing that now. It wasn't particularly interesting, and she was rather looking for an excuse to cease the conversation when she saw Dot coming her way. She realized that one of the few open seats was next to her, and she wasn't sure whether or not she hoped that Dot would sit next to her. On one hand, she had rather liked Dot and wanted to be friends before the whole detention mess, and she did appreciate Dot standing up for her. On the other hand, Dot had been quite snippy with her during their detention and Anastasia didn't like to be the one to offer an olive branch.
Still, the other Gryffindor had started incorrectly explaining why the Levitation Charm really could work on a person, despite the fact that it was proven to not, and, as argumentative as Anastasia was, she wasn't about to get into a squabble with an idiot like that who thought he knew everything. It was an insult to her considerable intelligence to waste her time arguing with someone who was so clearly a moron.
"Good morning, Dot," Anastasia said cooly. She turned towards the other girl but attempted to mask the action by reaching for another piece of toast. It would have been a bit less transparent if Anastasia had touched her first piece. Or any of her food for that matter.

Dot was getting bored of the cereal. Yes, the chocolate balls were nicely made, and tasted delicious, but for some reason, Dot wanted to put aside her bowl of milk-soaked breakfast and go for something more plainer, more simple...more salty.
Of course, she couldn't just put aside a bowl full of cereals. First of all, that would be wasting, and God dislikes wasting, so obviously. Secondly, if someone would see her, what would they say? Okay, she is a eleven-year-old, but still - she doesn't have to act like one of the careless and stupid Gryffindor morons. And even though she ignores the first two things, if anyone owls her parents telling that Dot wasted food, they'd get furious. One of the things they were seriously against of was wasting, especially wasting food.
So there, not eating the cereal got out of question. What Dot did try to do is, eating the cereal faster, so it would finish sooner and she'd have some time to eat a buttered toast over it to wash the flavor off.
While Dot ate, she took her gaze off the book and asked herself, define doxies. For a moment, she bit on her lip, but then whispered to herself, "A Doxy, otherwise known as Biting Fairy, is a small fairy-like creature, covered in hair with two pairs of arms and two pairs of legs. Doxies have two rows of sharp, venomous teeth."
Her answer surprised herself - she couldn't recall when she read about the appearance of doxies in such detail, but the more, the better. She allowed herself a grin before she reached out for another bite, but cool, familiar words stopped her.
She blinked, before looking at her side. The girl, with pretty blonde hair. Anastasia.
Clearing her throat, she turned her facial expression to neutral and said in a simple monotone, "Good morning to you as well, Beckett."

Anastasia set the piece of toast on her plate next to the other untouched food. Unlike Dot, she had no qualms about wasting food. She'd grown up with plenty, and she was sure they would do something with the food, especially since it hadn't been touched. Back home, she was fairly certain that their house elves ate any leftovers after a meal. She really didn't know and frankly, didn't really care.
Dot seemed absorbed in her studies, which Anastasia rather admired. She didn't like reading when she was eating or pretending to eat anyway. It was too loud and she worried she'd spill food on her textbook or something. Not that she was particularly clumsy, it just seemed like an obvious risk. Anyways, she prefered to be social at this point in the day. To her, socializing was equally important was her grades. Since her grades weren't having any issues, she didn't see a reason to be dedicating the time to studying.
Anastasia held back a frown at Dot's monotone voice. She supposed that Dot was still annoyed at her then. She honestly couldn't see why though, seeing as Anastasia's defending Dot was what had gotten Anastasia detention. Anastasia had more reason to be annoyed, but she was trying to convince herself not to be. She rather liked Dot and thought she was pretty good company. "How was your weekend?" she asked innocently, the right corner of her mouth pulling itself into a faint smile. As she waited for Dot to reply, she poked at her egg as though she was going to eat it, but instead just pushed it into separate piles on her plate.

Dot was rather surprised when Anastasia asked about her weekend. Were they not part-time rivals? Or at least that's what Dot thought. Back at the detention, when they'd last seen each other, they'd been rude, and Anastasia looked super annoyed on Dot for butting in in a family matter.
So instead of wanting to pick a fight with her again, she had decided to keep her voice a simple plain. But Anastasia, with her words and the barest hints of smile, surprised her. Dot used her fingers to brush locks back and spoke, "It was quite nice, thank you," Although the monotone was gone - a quick improvement, obviously - there was still a hint of formality in her voice. After a small pause, she finally decided that she should keep the conversation going, and said, "I trust your own was good as well? Except for...you know, the detention."
Dot didn't quite understand whether she liked the detention or not. Playing with the weeds was good, but snapping at Anastasia wasn't. From inside, Dot was always a non-violent, all-peace type of girl, but she kept that vulnerable part of her hidden inside a hard mask of somewhat boldness, lest people take advantage of her niceness.
Swallowing down another spoonful of wet cereal, she looked at the untouched food in Anastasia's plate and said, "So, you're not hungry?" It was a stupid question, yes, but Dot was curious.

"Other than detention, yes, mine was fairly nice," Anastasia replied. She decided not to mention the Ravenclaw since she already felt quite guilty about that whole mess. Anyway, she was considering attempting to smooth things over with Dot, not make Dot think she was a terrible person who made strangers cry. She'd apologize to that girl the next time she saw her, or try to anyway. She hated apologizing. It meant admitting she'd been wrong, which she just couldn't stand.
Although, if she apologized to Dot, it wouldn't have been so much of an admission that she'd been wrong so much as an explanation of her behavior. She knew she could apologize on her cousin's behalf, seeing as Anastasia knew for certain that her behavior was wrong.
Anastasia's cheeks flushed red when Dot noticed her untouched food. She'd thought she was doing a fair job of things, pushing the food around to make it look as if it had actually been eaten. She received another letter from her parents that wasn't much better than the last one. They'd scolded her for joining the newspaper and practically forbidden her from trying out for the Quidditch team. That wasn't going to happen. Due to that, she'd lost what small appetite she'd had. "Not really. I'm just thinking about something my parents wrote me," Anastasia replied a bit sheepishly. She'd use that to segway into something of an apology.

"Your parents," Dot repeated, somewhat trailing off. She'd heard a lot, now that she spent a full week at Hogwarts, about how pureblood parents were like, how judgy they are, how they don't usually respect their children's opinions.
Of course, not all parents were like that, so Dot shouldn't assume things about Anastasia's parents. But looking at the slight change of emotion on her face, Dot thought there was something wrong. Not being able to keep herself, she asked in a soft voice, "Pure-blood parents aren't too accepting, are they?"
That general question was a personal question in disguise. Of course, she didn't expect Anastasia to answer her truthfully. There were possibilities that she'd just defend her parents in front of her, since Dot is not, like, too close to her. They'd met only a few times. First in the common room, a good meeting. Then the awful Lydia-purist-detention-mudblood meeting. And finally, the detention, which itself wasn't too good.
But still, besides Lara Youngblood, Anastasia was the closest Dot was to - which she wasn't at all, which just shows her lack of ability disdain for socializing. Back at her Muggle school as well, Dot didn't talk much, except when she truly felt belonged among a group of people.

"Purebloods, in general, aren't exactly known for being accepting. They're more known for having rather high standards," Anastasia said, her voice a bit softer, less certain. She wasn't sure exactly how much she should reveal to Dot. Since they'd only really interacted a handful of times, she didn't really know Dot all that well. Sure, she had a general feeling about her, but she didn't actually know her. She was generally on the tight-lipped side, so maybe she'd say a bit more if Dot inquired further.
She decided she'd go ahead as let Dot know that she was sorry for her cousin's rudeness. It wasn't exactly an apology for her own behavior, but it was close. "Speaking of, I wanted to apologize for Lydia's behavior. It was quite impolite of her," Anastasia said, her voice more certain now. She'd disliked her cousin in secret for years, so it was easier to admit that her cousin was wrong than it was to admit her parents were. She'd gone her entire life before she went to Hogwarts believing everything they told her, believing that she was the one who was wrong when they said she didn't do something well enough, believing that her parents were perfect. Even though she'd started to doubt that in her time at Hogwarts, it took time. Nobody could just turn their back on elven years of upbringing in a matter of days.

Dot nodded at Anastasia's explanation, although she could not admit she exactly got everything Anastasia said. Instead of letting the topic down, she asked, "And an example of high standards would be...?"
Dot closed her textbook, having read the text and understood the basics of doxies, and placed it back in the book bag. Just as she was doing so, she noticed her optional textbook she had bought, What Lurks In The Shadows And Other Mystical Creatures. It was not a mandatory textbook of Hogwarts, rather an extra information book. It contained information about vampires, werewolves, gnomes, grindylows, redcaps, kappas, hinkypunks, boggarts and whatnot. Even though the book was super informative and concise and clear on its subject, Dot hadn't read the first chapter fully. At the moment, she felt like grabbing the book and start reading.
When Anastasia spoke up again, Dot pushed down the feeling and closed the zipper of her bag. Shrugging like it was no big matter, Dot said, "It's quite alright, you don't have to apologize." Her words may not be true, but Dot felt okay now, after a whole day of thinking back to the scene in the History of Magic hallway.
Instead of closing the topic of apology, Dot spoke up, "And I'm sorry, too. Not for big impolite to Lydia, but for..." A clearing of throat. "For being impolite to you."

Anastasia kind of ignored Dot's question about an example of her parents having high standards. She was going to tell her for sure, but she didn't want to do in such a public venue where anyone could overhear them.
The girl flushed a bit when Dot apologized to her. Well, now she would have to actually apologize for herself or it would seem rude. She supposed she owed Dot a bit more than just an apology for her cousin's behavior since Dot had gotten in trouble defending Anastasia. "I'm sorry for being rotten to you as well," Anastasia said, the words feeling strange on her tounge, "I was a bit shaken by my parents and Lydia, and I took it out on you. My parents, when they found out I wasn't in Slytherin, they-they threatened to disown me." Anastasia's normally confident, steady voice wavered a bit as she said the last sentence. It was barely above a whisper, and she hoped that Dot could hear it since she really didn't want to have to say the bitter words again.
It felt better than she'd expected to tell someone about her parents. Dot probably wouldn't get it, since it sounded like her parents really did love her unconditionally, but she still felt glad she'd told her. Anyway, Dot had told her about her past, which could hardly have been easy, so it just felt right to tell Dot.
