Anastasia Beckett was in a foul mood. Granted, she was not generally a particularly pleasant or sunshiney person, but she was in a spectacularly disagreeable mood that particular morning. Maybe it was because he was anticipating the Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson covering Boggarts later that week, maybe it was because she was sick of the overly strict rules and wanted more time to fly before classes began for the day. The most likely reason for her peevish demeanor was the fact that she had, for what felt like the millionth night in a row, barely slept a wink the past night. Allegedly, nightmares became milder as time went on, but for Ana, it felt like things were getting worse. The old favorite of the Blossom Ball was now alternating with all matter of variations on what had happened to her that summer. While coffee could do much, it was not a perfect substitute for sleeping, and more importantly, it couldn't actually help with the reason that she wasn't sleeping.
Between yawns and sips of hot coffee, she absently chewed her breakfast, desperately wishing that she had time that morning for some flight practice. She had overslept that morning, which had meant she was completely thrown off her routine, and that she was going to have to skip flying to make sure she actually got breakfast and had time to review for her Charms test later that day. She resolved to use most of her lunch break to make up for it, but missing out on the one thing that actually enabled her to relax and focus on something other than the absolute calamity that was her pathetic existence had her seething and ready to go off at the slightest thing.
First years for instance. One would think that Ana's overall "ice-queen" air would cause most of the younger, spectacularly obnoxious students to leave her to her brooding. If anything, it was the exact inverse. There were more first-years who felt comfortable talking to her now than there had been when she actually was a first year, and it enraged her. Had she not earned that small reward in her tenure at school. That was the way things were supposed to work. Sure, higher years were more stressed and more traumatized from having attended Hogwarts longer, but at least most younger students wouldn't speak to them unless spoken to. This year's batch didn't seem to have received that message and despite Ana's best efforts to remedy that, they didn't seem to be getting any better.
Poking disdainfully at her breakfast, she scowled and continued her mental tirade against the world. Having already covered first years and overly strict rules, Ana opted to direct her anger at her breakfast. Why on earth was breakfast always so heavy? True, it was practically anything anyone could imagine, and Ana generally had some combination of yogurt, toast, eggs, and fruit. Still, she was hardly rational at the best of times, and this was anything but. Who decided that growing children needed to eat potatoes and sausage for breakfast? That was disgusting and while Ana as a wizard knew very little about heart disease, it seemed, in general, a good way to become ill.

Maison never used to be a morning person. At home, he would make a point of sleeping in as long as he could, waking up in just enough time to slip on his uniform and have a few bites of toast before catching a ride to school. Things were different here at Hogwarts. For one, Maison didn’t particularly enjoy being confined to Gryffindor tower for nearly twelve hours each night. The common room was well enough, but he would much rather be playing outside or exploring the castle. By the time seven o’clock rolled around each morning, he was eager for an adventure.
On this particular morning, Maison had managed to duck out of the common room a bit earlier than usual. He had a double potions lesson after breakfast and wanted to soak up as much sunshine as he possibly could before having to spend his morning staring at the dreary, dungeon walls. He spent about thirty minutes monkeying around in some trees down by the Great Lake before his stomach began to rumble, signaling to him that it was time to head back to the castle for breakfast.
His eyes now scanned the Gryffindor table in search of his dorm mates. They were still nowhere to be seen - typical - so Maison decided that today was as good a day as any to broaden his horizons and befriend some of his other housemates. He was drawn to one student in particular – an older girl sitting alone who appeared to be in a bit of a sour mood. This didn’t faze Maison in the slightest, of course. Everyone had bad days - especially older students, it seemed - and that was never a good basis for judging a person. Besides, she was one of his own. Lions looked out for each other, and seeing her sullen face had encouraged Maison to embark on a mission to cheer her up.
“Gooooood morning~!” The young lion sing-songed, beaming as he plopped down across from his housemate. His left hand was currently cupped around a longhorned beetle he had found outside and subsequently adopted. He wasn't sure how he was going to keep it both alive and undetected through all of his classes, but his determination to keep it as a pet had overshadowed all logical reasoning at this point. Maison reached for an empty mug, carefully placed the beetle on the table, and quickly placed the mug upside-down over it to trap it. He then proceeded to dish out some eggs and toast onto his plate as though nothing were out of the ordinary. “Hope you don’t mind if I join you! I mean, you can’t really say no, ‘cause I’m already sitting here. I’m Maison, by the way, in case you didn’t already know.”

Ana's brooding was interrupted by a barrage of verbosity. With a venomous glance, she turned to see the source of the sound. It was a boy who seemed could generously be described as rather shabby looking. His hair didn't appear to have ever been acquainted with a broom or a pair of scissors, and Ana idly wondered if she could Diffindo precisely enough to give him a decent hair cut. His words and overall sickenly perky demeanor made her want to punch him in the throat repeatedly to eliminate the threat of any further words. Would she get in trouble for that? The Hall was fairly empty as it was still fairly early, but there were still professors.
She stared in abject horror as he set an insect on the table before placing a mug over it. She desperately wanted to flip that mug over and use it to smash the insect, and all thoughts of food abandoned her mind. "I most definitely do mind, and I will decline the company of both you and whatever the hell you just put on the table," she said, her eyes blazing and voice murderous. "Furthermore, if you insist upon remaining here, I will be morally obligated to set you on fire to do something about your abysmal hair." She rolled her eyes at his introduction. She honestly could not care less what his name was. She was on a warpath that morning already, and the obnoxious moron that seemed to misguidedly think that he was permitted to speak to her was definitely not helping.
God, this year of first years was unbelievable. She could say with absolute certainty that he was a first-year in terms of annoyance, if not in terms of actual age. How hard was it to grasp that Ana wanted to be left alone? She desperately wanted to leave since the odds of her doing something that would result in getting detention were going up by the second, but she wasn't done with her coffee yet. Taking another sip of her drink, she decided to ignore him. She could do that, right? It was the mature, responsible way to handle this. Ana was a mature, responsible person. She was entirely capable of ignoring people who mildly irritated her and not escalating things. Except for the part where she definitely wasn't. Sometimes, she baffled even herself as to how she managed to be simultaneously the most stubborn person she knew and also possess the least impulse control. Unless the boy did as she said and left her alone, it was a matter of time before Ana did something stupid.

Maison never expected the older girl to match his enthusiasm, but the sheer hostility in her tone was disconcerting to say the least. He had encountered hateful and unpleasant people before – bullies seemed to run rampant at his muggle school back home – but he had never once been threatened so vehemently by someone older than him. Weren’t they supposed to be the responsible ones? It left him wondering what on earth could be responsible for inducing such a foul mood.
“That’s rude,” he pointed out matter-of-factly. Maison tended to think with his heart first, head second, so while any reasonable person might take the hint and leave, her threatening tone did little to faze him. He sincerely doubted that she would try anything funny within eyesight of the staff table. With words as her only weapon, Maison was optimistic that he’d be able to stick this out. When dealing with bullies, his dads had always told him to kill others with kindness, which is precisely what he intended to do (and hopefully cheer her up in the process).
“I haven’t even finished my breakfast yet. And he has a name, y’know. It’s Oscar and he’s my pet.” Maison pinched a bit of eggs between his fingers and slid them underneath the mug. Whether or not beetles even liked human food, he was not about to let his new six-legged friend go hungry. That was just bad parenting. “It’s not like you have to look at him or anything. He’s also trapped, so he can’t get you.” That much was obvious, but the girl still seemed disgusted with him, so he figured she could use the gentle reminder.
Maison had barely taken a breath before launching into his next rant. “Also, what’s wrong with my hair? I promise I’ve washed it.” Holding his fork between his teeth, he reached up to feel around his disheveled head of dirty blond hair in search of any leaves or twigs that it may have trapped during his morning adventure, but his search turned up nothing. Why would she want to set him on fire, then? Sure, it was hard to tame, and he could probably do with a haircut, but the challenge of sitting still long enough to cut it was greater than its worth.

Ana rolled her eyes when the boy pointed out to obvious. Well, props to him for being able to read basic social cues! She wasn't particularly trying to be kind, quite the opposite, actually. She wanted to be left alone. Was that too much to ask? It wasn't like she had sat down and started threatening him. She had made an effort to sit by herself and the boy was completely ignoring it. God, she understood, at least on some level, why some of her friends were trying to stop her from isolating herself, but what on Earth made complete strangers feel entitled to her company? "Oh, congratulations, you're able to comprehend the English language," Ana said dryly. "Then you'll have no trouble understanding me when I tell you to sit elsewhere."
She scoffed as he said he hadn't even finished his meal. Did she look like she cared even the slightest bit? Anyways, he had just started his meal after steamrolling over her objections to him seating himself next to her. What was wrong with the general population of Hogwarts? It seemed there were endless amounts of people making an effort to purposefully ignore what Ana wanted, and then get all self-righteous and offended when she was understandably upset. "Take your breakfast and your vermin somewhere else then," Ana said slowly as if she was speaking to a very young, slightly stupid child. He earned another death glare when he said that she couldn't see him. As if not seeing things made them any less terrible. Ana could confirm first hand that this was anything but true. Not seeing her mother didn't make her any less dead, and ignoring the letters from her aunt didn't make her aunt any less airheaded and odious. "The fact that you think that makes it any better is deeply disturbing."
Ana disinterestedly poked at her half-finished yogurt before taking another sip of coffee. Her brow furrowed at his reaction to her remark about his hair. Did he honestly not know? Her nose wrinkled slightly and she gave him a look of utter disgust. "Again, deeply disturbing," she remarked coldly before returning to nibbling at her toast.

Maison was much too stubborn for his own good. The more she asked him to leave, the harder he dug his heels in, and the notion that she might simply want to eat breakfast in peace didn’t once cross his mind. He viewed the situation through his own subjective lens; if it were him, he wouldn’t want to spend the most important meal of the day sitting alone, especially if he was upset about something. He would want to talk about it, or at the very least he'd want someone to distract him or try to cheer him up. Maison knew it wasn’t his responsibility to fix his housemate’s problems, but that certainly wasn’t going to stop him from trying.
“Oscar,” he interjected to correct her use of the word 'vermin' to describe his beetle friend. She continued on about how he was ‘deeply disturbing’ - which didn't make much sense to him - and he remained silent, continuing to shovel eggs and breakfast potatoes into his mouth and blatantly disregarding the girl’s continued demands for him to leave. This was the Gryffindor house table, not the 'Anastasia Beckett' table, and Maison believed he had a right to sit wherever he pleased.
“What’s got you so upset, anyway? Was someone mean to you? Did you get a bad mark on your homework? Are you not getting enough sleep?” His onslaught of questions was almost immediately followed up with, “Whatever it is, I don’t think it’s fair that you’re taking it out on me. I was only trying to be friendly.” Despite being perhaps a bit forthcoming with his initial introduction, Maison couldn’t see how he could possibly be at fault for this. People didn't usually react so negatively to his enthusiasm (and if they did, it was subtle enough for him not to notice). He felt he was flying blind here, holding tight to what his fathers had always told him about being kind to others even when they don't show kindness in return. Unfortunately, it was much easier said than done.

It was truly a pity that slapping him out of the seat would likely get her detention. That didn't completely eliminate it as a course of action, but it did detract from the appeal slightly. Detention was the last thing she had time or energy to deal with. She also didn't particularly appreciate him interrupting her to tell her the vermin's name. "Vermin," she said forcefully. Did people just not know that their few weeks of magical training wouldn't do them an ounce of good against any upper-year? It didn't matter if it was a second-year or a seventh year. First years barely knew one end of their wands from another, so why were they so overly confident in their own abilities to the point of picking fights with older students?
"The only thing upsetting me is an irritating oaf and his vermin disrupting my otherwise peaceful breakfast," Ana snapped, her posh accent making her sound spectacularly prissy. That was far from true, but he was certainly adding to her general level of upset. "It is perfectly fair of me, as you are the cause of my irritation. I did not request your "friendliness", quite the opposite, actually. So, if you're insistent upon remaining here, do shut up already."
She took another sip of coffee, closing her eyes for a moment in an attempt to regain some level of control over herself. Just because this boy was an obnoxious buffoon didn't mean she needed to hit him for it, and she knew that in the long run, it wouldn't be worth it. She honestly didn't care what his intentions were, she needed time in the morning to get somewhat balanced. That usually took the form of flying practice, but a quiet breakfast hadn't seemed like a terrible alternative. God, she wished things could be like they were in the spring. She was impulsive, but she was the one driving. While she might have done reckless things, it had been because she wanted to, not because she was so furious she just snapped and hit someone.
