Worse Than Face Planting PV George H Finished

Sunday | 5 April 2020 | Breakfast

Aaron walked into the Great Hall alone on Sunday morning. This was a rare sight, because he was usually accompanied by at least one of his best friends, Sean or Lydia. Today, though, he had woken up pretty hungry and didn't want to wait for his friends to get ready. He knew they'd arrive here sooner or later.

Besides, Aaron needed to start getting used to being alone. He'd received word last week that his mum wanted him to stay at the castle for Easter break. It was an unfortunate turn of events caused by a muggle pandemic. She was worried for his safety, despite his numerous attempts at telling her he was immune to COVID-19 (being a wizard and all). Now he would be stuck at the castle all break with nothing to do. His friends were staying too, but he knew they wouldn't be spending all their time together. He'd need to find things to do on his own, and breakfast seemed like a good place to start.

As he walked towards the Hufflepuff table, he noticed a few other early risers were chowing down. There was one boy in particular that stood out to him - George Henry. The sight of him made Aaron stop in his tracks. A couple of days ago, the Hufflepuff Common Room had caught fire and caused quite a commotion. Several students fell through the floor and were attacked by some sort of darkness below. When Aaron had left to go get a means of escape from the dorm, George had mistakenly repaired the floor and trapped Sean (along with several others) down below. Aaron had been so mad that he tried to punch him. In the end, he missed and face planted from George tripping him.

It had been pretty embarrassing.

The memory made Aaron wanted to turn around and go back to the common room. He could always get food later, once George was gone. But he hesitated, thoughts flickering back to a conversation with Lydia yesterday. A talk about how he should really apologize to George. Aaron bit his lip slightly, knowing that this would have to happen sooner or later. They were in the same year and house! He couldn't have an enemy for all time, especially considering it was Aaron who had overreacted.

Aaron walked over to George, standing behind the bench opposite of the other first year. Nobody else was in that immediate area, but it was probably clear to everyone in the hall how awkward Aaron felt.

"Um, h-hi George," Aaron said, avoiding all eye contact. He stared instead at the plate of food in front of the other Hufflepuff. "I just, uh- wanted to apologize- y'know, for the other day," he said, though it really came off as more of a series of mumbles. As he felt his face warming, he considered that this might be even worse than face planting in the common room.

The sleepless George Henry picked at his breakfast on that fine Sunday morning, sitting by himself at the Hufflepuff table. It was a sad sight seeing him without his usual friends around to chat with. He looked like someone had poked a hole in him and let the air out. The boy stared down at his plate, draining the yolk from one of his eggs with a prong of his fork. A few students sat near him, but kept a bit of distance, not wanting to contaminate their social status through contact with the disgraced Hufflepuff. Or at least George thought so - maybe it was because the boy was staring at his eggs like he was about to murder them. It was hardly an approachable look.

His head snapped up as he caught a glimpse of Aaron in his peripheral, approaching him at the table. He felt his heartbeat racing, the end of his fork scraping on his plate as he mangled one of his eggs, an unintended consequence of the death grip he now had on the utensil.

Now he was staring at Aaron with that same look, going statue still aside from the slight motion of his fork dragging his breakfast around the plate. The other boy was speaking, but George couldn't hear it with his heart pounding in his ears. He wasn't used to violent confrontation like that - the other boy had given him quite a scare, and it was clear he hadn't quite recovered yet. The dark circles under his eyes weren't eyeshadow, and his pale face was all natural. Of course, the whole scare the other night stopped him from sleeping then - and even after that, he couldn't get comfortable in his bed. Trying to play like everything was normal wasn't really working out, but still, he tried to cling to his routine and forget about everything.

But Aaron had to come and remind him. He didn't hear a word the boy had said, and assumed that it would have been something less kind than an apology. Aaron had tried to punch him, after all, he wouldn't come back to kiss and make up after just a day or two.

"Do you want something?" George said, with as much hostility as he could muster. He didn't really have the energy to be mad, and he didn't want to waste what energy he did have so early in the morning. He had homework to catch up on. His next words might have sounded like a taunt, but they were genuine. "I can't hear you."

Aaron remembered the way his mother used to snap at him for mumbling. When it came to stressful or uncomfortable situations, he tended to become a little withdrawn. It was something he needed to work on, but here at Hogwarts, he had yet to be in a situation as uncomfortable as this.

Aaron raised his head as George finally spoke. Their eyes met for the first time since that night. It was only now that Aaron was noticing the obvious: his brown eyes and brown hair. An average-looking kid, but the Asian boy would remember his face well. It was a peculiar talent he had. Remembering faces and names. Not that this particular memory would be a pleasant one.

The fellow Hufflepuff's words made Aaron frown slightly, knowing that the boy was still upset by the whole situation. That was understandable, of course. George probably wasn't a martial artist like himself, and he knew from a few fights in Muggle school how scary he could come off just because he knew how to throw a punch. A lot of kids his age weren't trained to fight, and it was probably even more common of wizarding kids. Not that he knew whether George was a muggle-born or wizard-born. It's just-

Aaron blinked rapidly, shaking the thoughts from his mind. He was distracting himself from the situation at hand. George spoke again, this time his words almost taunting him. It was clear he hadn't heard Aaron's words.

"I'm sorry!" the Asian boy suddenly blurted out. His voice was far too loud and aggressive than the situation called for. Heads turned to look at the pair, and it was making him even more uncomfortable. If his face was starting to turn pink before, he must be tomato red by now. Standing awkwardly in the middle of the tables wasn't helping, and he wished they could have a normal sit-down conversation instead of a very public apology. But he also knew George wasn't going to just invite him to join breakfast with open arms.

"I'm sorry," Aaron repeated, apologizing for both the punch attempt and the sudden yelling a moment ago. "I overreacted," he said, hoping that this explanation would suffice. He wasn't used to apologizing like this - usually the people he punched (or attempted to punch) deserved what they got. George had made a mistake, but in retrospect, Aaron knew he didn't deserve to be hit for it. In that moment, Aaron had overreacted like many times in his past. But this was the first time he felt like he was actually wrong for it.

"I didn't mean to try and hit you," Aaron added, shuffling his feet slightly as he tried to maintain eye contact this time. What else was he supposed to say?

George's face looked different than he had on that night. No fear, no panic. He looked tired. Tired and angry, his eyes staring ahead, surrounded by dark circles. The boy plucked a piece of bacon from his plate and lifted it to his mouth, chewing on it like a cow, gaze forward as he chewed and then swallowed. Cooked perfect, just like every other day. But he could hardly taste it. It felt like time skipped for a few seconds, coming back into focus when Aaron spoke.

The noise made George tense and jump, his fork scraping across the plate, emitting a shrill noise. His hold body felt stiff. He dropped his fork and it clattered against the plate, unsettling him further as he laid his hands down in his lap, a few of his neighbours at the table hushing to watch him. A few seconds later, he processed the words. Aaron was sorry. His first instinct was to tell the other boy that it was okay - that was how apologies were supposed to go. But that only worked for the small stuff. George could feel his heart pounding in his chest, the lingering taste of bacon on his tongue as he pushed it hard against his teeth, jaw clenched. He wasn't okay. It wasn't over just because he said sorry. Not even if he said it twice.

"You overreacted," George repeated, his voice devoid of sympathy. His eyes narrowed, scanning of Aaron, watching his face - and particularly his hands - as the boy shuffled and squirmed. Locking eyes with Aaron made George squirm uncomfortably, his own hands flexing and bunching his robe up in his lap, gripping tight on the fabric just to release some of the tension. It felt like the world was shaking, but it was just him, subtly shaking his head in disbelief at the boy's apology.

The extra explanation didn't do anything to help him. George finally locked eyes with Aaron fully, leaning in and speaking up as he responded. "You didn't mean to try and hit me? Did you slip and grab my shirt and punch me? Whoops? You're a liar," George said, a few more students around the table watching the spectacle as he threw out his accusations. "You meant to try and hit me, you were gonna punch me in the face. You're not sorry."

Breaking eye contact, he cast his gaze down at his plate, picking up another piece of bacon and hastily packing it away into his mouth. He could still see Aaron's legs at the top of his vision. He focused on them, hoping the boy would walk away.

Aaron nodded solemnly as George repeated his words. Yes. He overreacted. It didn't sound like a good excuse because it wasn't, but Aaron didn't know how to articulate himself. Clearly he needed to do better. George was angry. It was little more than the young twelve-year-old had expected. Although he hadn't really thought it would happen, deep in his mind, Aaron hoped that he would say sorry and his fellow badger would accept the apology and they could move on. Maybe bond over the silly punch attempt, get to know each other, and become friends! It had definitely been some wishful thinking. Good thing Lydia had prepared him for a reaction closer to reality.

George spoke again, and Aaron looked away as he was accused of being not sorry. It wasn't true. He really was sorry. Yeah, he had meant to punch George at the time, but he hadn't really meant to do it. He didn't know how to explain that.

"I mean, yeah- I tried to punch you- I'm not denying that," Aaron admitted, feeling a bit defensive. "But I didn't actually mean it. Like- sometimes I just- lose control," his explanation was flimsy, and they both knew it. Aaron had never really had to explain his outbursts before. Back in muggle school years ago, when he got in trouble for hitting someone, his parents were the mediators. He'd be brought to the principal's office, face-to-face with his victim, and all he had to do was say a quick sorry to the person he hit (even though they usually deserved getting hit). Then his parents would take care of the rest.

Aaron's eyes raised again and he gestured with his hands, putting his palms up in front of him in an apologetic gesture. "Bud, I really am sorry. For real. I don't know how to explain it, I just- one of my best friends was down the hole and- I just snapped," he said lamely. The young Hufflepuff was trying and failing to explain. Obviously hitting George wasn't going to solve anything at the time, and Aaron had no idea why his brain thought it would.

"What can I do to make it up to you?" Those words left Aaron's mouth before he even really processed the meaning. What could George possibly want from him? It's not like Aaron had a lot to offer - he sucked at homework and couldn't exactly offer tutoring. The only thing he was good at was flying, but he doubted George would want flying lessons from a boy who tried to punch him. It's not like they were friends and could just get over it. So how did one show they were sorry if an apology wasn't enough?

"So were mine, stupid," George said, looking up at Aaron with a sneer. As if he were the only one suffering on that night. The whole reason he'd repaired the floor by mistake was to try and help one of his friends. Two of his best friends had been attacked, one of them burned. "Do you think I did all of that on purpose or something? Have you got anger issues?"

The question was asked without sympathy, loud enough for the students nearby to hear. He wanted them to get an idea of who Aaron really was, in case the denied apology would end up twisting in the sorry boy's favour. Not on George's watch. But then Aaron offered a better proposition than an apology - offering to do something to make it up to him. A more equitable arrangement than exchanging his forgiveness for a weak apology. George's sneer withered as he pondered what could possibly make it up to him, tapping the prongs of his fork gently upon his plate to the rhythm of his thought. The idea came to him quicker than it should've.

"Can I punch you?" George asked, looking up at Aaron - his expression more curious than vengeful. If he was really sorry, he'd be willing to do it for forgiveness, George thought, examining the other young Hufflepuff's face. He had big chubby cheeks. The punch would probably just glance right off, but it would be a point proven either way, even if George wasn't a martial artist like Aaron was.

He nodded at his own words, quite sure of what he wanted. It might not have come in the form Aaron expected, but this might be the closest thing to bonding that he would get from George. The sulking boy's expression changed, hiding a smirk. "After breakfast we'll meet up in the Courtyard and I'll punch you in the face. Then we'll be even. Does that sound fair?"

It sounded fair to George.

Aaron hated being accused of having anger issues - perhaps because it hit a little too close to home. A scowl took over his face at the accusation, and he was very tempted to just give up on the whole "making amends" thing. But he still went ahead and asked what it would take to be forgiven.

What George suggested, though, took Aaron by surprise. His mouth dropped open a little and showed as much, with his eyes opening wider too. He wanted to punch him? "But my punch didn't even land on you!" Aaron protested instinctively, sounding a bit like a petulant child with the whining of his voice. He crossed his arms immediately, his eyes narrowing at George as he explained his terms. The courtyard after breakfast. He had not anticipated this kind of request from his fellow badger, but- maybe it was the best way to solve things after all?

It's not like Aaron hadn't been punched before - he wasn't scared by the idea. He just didn't want it getting around that he was getting into fights. Surely it would ruin any chance he had at getting onto the Quidditch team one day. And the courtyard seemed like such a conspicuous place to do it, as well. But also - as long as it was just one punch, they could just tell any passersby that it wasn't a fight - just sparring practice. And- well- Aaron couldn't think of an alternative to offer that would make George happy. Besides... George probably didn't even know how to throw a proper punch. It probably wouldn't even hurt that much.

"If we do this, you'll completely forgive me? Like - you get your punch, and you won't be mad at me anymore for trying to punch you?" Aaron asked, wanting perfect clarification on the terms. He wondered if anyone around them were listening to this ridiculous conversation - and if they were, he expected they might have an audience after breakfast. If George confirmed Aaron's words, then then the Asian boy would accept his terms.

The shocked expression on Aaron's faced earned a little bit of amnesty from George already. It couldn't possibly make up for what had happened - but Aaron had been just a small piece of the pain from that night, and seeing him get a little bit hurt as a result would be a good first step on the path to feeling better.

"Maybe mine won't either!" George retorted, taking on his own petulant tone. When the other kid crossed his arms, George raised his eyebrow. Would Aaron really back down that easily? It's only one measly punch, after all - it was hardly even a thing worth apologizing over. The pain of the punch for Aaron would be nothing compared to the joy it brought George, and that kind of suffering for the greater good was what Hufflepuffs were made out of. They were natural punching bags, even for each other.

"Absolutely," he said, with a few rapid nods of assurance. Contrary to his earlier anger, he was starting to feel quite excited by the prospect of punching the other boy. He had never punched anyone other than his brother, and his brother was taller, so he could never get a proper angle. If Aaron was agreeing to be punched, he could really clock him proper. "I get my punch and we can even be friends," he added, nodding. "After I'm finished eating."

"I won't dodge it," Aaron protested, when George said that his own punch might not land. What was the point of letting the other boy get a punch at him if he was just going to dodge it? No, Aaron would resist the urge to evade and let the punch land. He knew it couldn't be that bad coming from a kid as non-violent looking as George. Most people in life didn't know how to throw a proper punch, usually injuring themselves more than the person they were punching. Aaron couldn't help thinking that would be a funny outcome in this scenario, but he immediately regretted that thought. He had brought this on himself, he shouldn't be hoping for George to fail in the one thing that would make them even.

Aaron nodded solemnly when George agreed to the terms of the deal, saying they could even be friends. Aaron didn't see that happening, but he got to his feet to leave George alone. All he wanted was forgiveness really. "See you then," Aaron agreed before walking away. The hunger that he had entered the Great Hall with had completely disappeared, now replaced by slight anxiety. Instead of taking a seat further down the table to eat, the twelve-year-old left the dining hall entirely.
