Cookie Crumbles Errand

Violet hadn’t been told about the activities going on in the Great Hall today, directly. She had overheard a few of the girls in the hallways gushing about how beautiful the sweets were looking. She even managed to overhear a couple of the older boys in her house grumbling about how they weren’t even allowed to sneak one cookie. A house elf had apparently snatched it from them and then promptly removed them from the area.

With the opportunity to make a good impression on a professor she made her way up from the Slytherin dorms. Making quick work of the steps with her tiny legs. By the time she made it to the Great Hall she was slightly out of breath. Did she miss the activity? She would hate to have missed such an important opportunity for not only her but her house. Being a Slytherin still came with some stigma and this would be one of the many ways to improve their public appearance.

Stepping into the room with an air of uncertainty about her she glanced around the room. It seemed to be a rather busy place. Students bustling about the room carrying blank canvases to make their own. What should she decorate? Maybe she should try and decorated a few of everything or perhaps she should simply stick to one thing. Tapping a small finger to her chin she grinned as she spotted a house elf carrying our a fresh batch of what smelt like sugar cookies.

She could decorate a number of these, maybe even have a theme but each would be it’s own entity. When she packaged them up it would be an amazing bundle of joy. The joy on her face was almost indescribable as she gather about a dozen of the cookies and went to an open work station. Now, a theme. What could she decorated these cookies as that wouldn’t be boring. They cookies couldn’t be sloppily done, no, they had to be perfect. It was to welcome a new professor after all.

Scanning the Great Hall for inspiration she grinned, maybe she would do house cookies. That idea as quickly shot down when another student passed by with not only cookies decorated with the houses logos on them to perfection but cupcakes and mini cakes too. With a sigh she stared blankly at the lightly colored cookies infront of her. They were just as blank as her mind at the moment. Placing her chin in her hand, honey colored eyes danced around the room one last time before stopping.

There it was, her cookie inspiration, a small succulent placed on top of a window seal. It was so tucked away that she nearly missed it. Yes, teachers at her primary schooled loved when they got plants. Always praising the muggle children as if they had won the lottery. Perhaps it would be this way at Hogwarts as well. She did enjoy a good praising after.

Pulling over the supplies she started to lay put everything she should need. First she grabbed the piping bags, her numbers 1, 2, and .5 piping tips, followed by her royal icing. To anyone else her workstation would look disorganized and messy but to her it was completely organized. She had matched to bags to the tip and was busy mixing the colors she would need to decorate her cookies. There were two pinks, one blue, and at least four different shades of green when she was all done mixing.

Moving to her first cookie her hand shook as she tried to make sure her first pipe was done perfectly. She had only ever done this with her grandmother at home. It seemed a lot easier when she knew her grandma would fix her mistake if she made one. Now this was all on her, if the cookies looked poorly done it would mean that she did a bad job. Taking a shaky breath she closed her eyes and squeezed just hard enough for some of the mulberry shade to touch the once bland cookie. Slowly she peaked one eye open to assess the damage done. Much to her surprise it was a nice sized dollop that would start her first cookie. Continuing with a new found confidence she found herself finishing her fourth cookie out of the twelve. Taking a step back to admire her work her face beamed with joy. She was worried for nothing, these cookies looked adorable. Professor Kibitzer would just have to love them, hopefully they wouldn’t be too cute to eat.

By the time the first batch was finished she paused looking through the amount of ingredients she had left over. There was no way she could just leave them here to go to waste. Maybe she could decorate another batch of the cookies. Waltzing back over to the cookie pile she grabbed a another twelve cookies. This time the cookies were no longer just round cookies but different shapes and sizes. How would she make due with these? She couldn’t just stick them back in the pile after she had touched them. Laying them out she frowned, her lips falling into a thin line of disappointment. Her other cookies were round and made it rather simply to make them look like succulents.

After much debate she started with her first cookie making a small outline of white on the cookie shaped like an octagon. After watching it dry she continued to fill in the cookie with white follow by the use of a toothpick in order to spread the icing. At first she had no idea if this would even work. She had seen it done in a local bakery before but it always seemed to advanced for her. Surprised that after few second the icing had fully covered the cookie she grinned. Once she was finished with the first cookie it was covered beautifully. It had a small amount of brown sugar in the middle to look like sand, a cute black border, and three tiny succulents in the corner. Like this type of design even more than her basic first batch Violet pressed on, determined to make works of art instead of plain edible cookies.

It took over an hour to the last of the cookies and when she was done her hand was covered in dried icing and more than half the box of toothpicks were used and placed haphazardly around the girl. Calling for a house elf to take her cookies away her eyes beamed with the pride only a Slytherin could have. She reorganized her area but didn’t bother to try and find a place to throw away her scraps, just placed them in a large pile so it would be easier for the house elves to clean up.
