whoosh

A loud clattering sounded through the great hall as a metal bowl containing mangoes falls from the table. The bowl emptied its contents on the fall, mangos rolling every which direction, before skidding to a stop.

Oh no. Kona Mason's face turned bright pink as she scrambled in an attempt to stop the mess. She tried to ignore glances from students even though she could feel several eyes burning into her back. Overwhelmed, she began to try to collect the mangoes, stumbling over her own feet in embarrassment.

One mango, two mangoes, three mangoes... She counted to herself, trying to calm her nerves and focus on the task. Mangoes had always been one of Kona's favorite foods, but she was starting to rethink that. Kona held the mangoes in her hands with difficulty, looking all over for the lost bowl. From the corner of her eye, she saw a gleam of something shiny. The bowl! She exclaimed to herself frantically trying to reach it. The upside down silver bowl had gone across the mail aisle and under the Hufflepuff table. She sighed to herself and tried to reach under the table to get it, apologizing to students as she passed.

In her attempt to reach the bowl, she lost hold of two mangoes. The rolled even further under the Hufflepuff table. Kona began to panic a little more now, she only had one mango in her hand and she was struggling to reach the bowl. She got down on her stomach and stretched her hand under the table as far as she could.

Curious...

[quote][font=times new roman]Vince took a slow bite of food. She flinched, gagging for a moment before spitting the yogurt into a napkin, wiping off her tongue as indiscreetly as possible. How could yogurt taste like barbeque? Someone probably tainted the food, luckily she'd tried one of the flavors that weren't that bad, just something that didn't go with that particular cuisine.

Taking a sip of the safe water, Vince was startled, once again, by the sound of a loud clanging nearby. Snapping her head around she saw a fruit roll away in all directions, seeming to come from a girl who was now clearly embarrassed. Vince watched for a moment but then looked away, it wasn't any of her business. She couldn't do anything anyways, she was allergic to mangos. Actually, she was very allergic to mangos, as in if she one even touched her skin she'd begin to puff up.

Vince focused on her homework, which she was reviewing since she'd finished a long time ago, but she could hear people sniggering behind her, laughing at the girl's misfortune. She remembered when she was in this girl's place, minding her business and still got bullied by some people. Yeah, she didn't drop a bowl of fruit all of the floor but it was no better to just sit there and ignore than to bully someone.

Blushing herself, Vince stood up abruptly and glanced briefly at the girl before picking up a bunch of napkins and started picking the fruit off the floor. She avoided her eyes, just wanting to help and get it over with. It wasn't that much fruit, but the girl was overwhelming with the amount in her hand. Glancing around, Vince grabbed a large, unused bowl nearby. She placed the mangos she had evenly into the bowl so they wouldn't fall out, then made to pass it over to the girl but when she looked up the girl was reaching for something.

Vince watched as the other fruit rolled underneath the Hufflepuff table and winced, wondering if she should go after them or...she didn't even know. She was bad in these situations, helping others, because usually people didn't really want or need her help, and told her that as bluntly as possible. But this girl seemed nice, and Vince wanted to start being more helpful, even if it was totally out of her comfort zone.

Watching the girl stretch for the metal bowl, Vince tried to think of another solution, since this one might end up with someone getting kicked in the face or worse. Looking around, she couldn't see anything helpful like a broomstick or anything long enough to reach the bowl. But she did notice that a student's foot was really close to the bowl. Waiting for just the right moment, the student's foot moved and hit the bowl, skidding it close to the two girls and Vince caught the edge of the bowl, bring it closer to them. She gave it to the girl. “ Here... ”

River ran as fast as she could down the staircases, mind set on the destination of, The Great Hall. Had River managed to sleep in and almost miss breakfast? Yes. And was it because she had been sitting up with a book for way to long last night? Also yes. It was just too good to put away, she thought, trying to make herself feel a little better about the situation.
She looked stressed down on her watch, okay, I still have some time to eat if I get there with no interuptions.

River was almost there, just one more flight of stairs, and a turn in to the great doors to the Great Hall. Everything seems to be so great in this place. Except River’s brain and the concept of time...
She hurried inside, not even thinking to slow down as she entered the doors, heavy breathed. And before she could even stop to catch a breath, she slips, and falls face first to the floor.
«Ouch...», she muttered, as she squirmed around on the floor trying to identify what in the world she had stumbled into. ... A mango..?, she made a slight grimace of pain as she sat up slowly, looking down at her hands. They had caught her in the fall, but had to pay for it, as they were a bit bruised.

River looked around, trying to find out why that mango had managed to end up on the floor. And sure enough, she spotted two girls picking something up from the floor. And it did look like mangos too. The redhead carefully stood up from the floor, fighting a weak headrush as she sweeped up the mango off the floor. At least the mango made it out alive, she comforted herself with, and headed in direction of the two girls. One of them looked like a girl she already knew, could it be Vince? She tought, closing up a little. Assuming this is after we’ve met in the other thread

And sure enough it was her, and another girl whom River had not met before. She slowly walked up to them, and looked over at the two Ravenclaws. «Hi, uhm, I found one of your mangos over there», she smiled weakly, reaching her bruised hand out, giving the mango to the girl.

Kona stretched her arm out as far as she could, but there was no way she was going to grab a hold of it. The bowl was close and yet so far from her reach. A girl that Kona did not know, had started helping pick up the mangoes. If she hadn’t been so anxious and overwhelmed by nearby laughter that she could only assume was about her, she would have smiled at the kind soul. Instead, her face was very flushed and overridden with panic.

All of a sudden a foot kicked the metal bowl and Kona leaped out of the way as fast as possible. The nice girl that had been helping her handed Kona the bowl. Kona opened her mouth to mummer thanks, but she was so embarrassed her voice was too quiet.

“Thank you.” She tried again with more success this time.

She garbed the remaining mangoes close to her feet and put them in the bowl. Kona was in the middle of picking up a mango when she watched a girl with red hair face plant because of some straggler mangoes.

Embarrassed as can be, Kona accepted the mango from the newly introduced girl. She placed the mango with the others in the bowl.

“Thank you I’m so sorry.” Kona apologized looking at her feet and clutching the silver bowl of mangoes. “Are you okay?” She asked the girl.

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for work longer than expected.

[quote][font=times new roman]Vince nodded at the girl. Really, she'd helped so she nor anyone else would fall, but she guessed it would be primarily looked at as a random act of kindness. Vince never just did things for people, though, she always had a valid, good reason that had to do primarily with herself when she did something. She never thought of it as selfish; you can't help anyone else if you can't help yourself first.

Vince looked just in time to see River Dewlight plant her face headfirst into the floor. The first thought she had was 'how'. How didn't she notice the mango, it was brighter than floor and was pretty obvious, nonetheless. Vince had a reflex where she tensed herself every time she felt an uneventful surface, especially while descending a staircase. She just liked the extra caution, you could never be wrong when you were being careful.

She looked away as River picked up the mango and walked towards them. It was a social rule, apparently, to pretend not to have notice when someone fell, even if it was the most obvious thing. Vince pretended to be really interested in the fruits still in her hands until River came over and greeted them, giving the mango to the other Ravenclaw.

Why are you sorry, thought Vince. You didn't make her fall.. It was a fact, not an opinion with a side. But she only thought this to clarify in her head. The River didn't seem upset at all, though she seemed a little in pain. Vince looked at her hand, which she remembered River had caught herself with. It probably stung, a lot. Brushing her hair behind her ear, Vince murmured, “ You should put...ice on... ” She gestured at her hand. “ Your hand.... ” She looked away.

River Put the mango in the bowl, and smiled carefully up at the girl. She could feel her cheeks slowly growing a little red. She hoped not too many people noticed her little floor-dive, but she knew that it was probably difficult to miss.
«Thank you I’m so sorry»
The girl said to River as she had placed the mango in the bowl. «What? No don’t be sorry, I wasn’t your fault at all», River replied to the girl. «I was in a hurry, and I really should have watched where I put my feet, It’s all on me», she added quickly, hoping this girl didn’t feel bad on River’s behalf. And mistakes happen all the time, she did not blame the girl for the mango incident.
River looked quickly over at Vince, as she said,
«You should put... ice on... Your hand...»
She gestured towards her hand.
River looked down at her hands, still nice and bruised from the fall. Her eyes furrowed slightly as she said, «Right, yeah I... should probably do something about that», she gave a weak chuckle as she turned her head up again. «It’s really not so bad though», she said reassuring. Her hands had been through rougher treatment than this in her earlier times of helping out on the farm. Lifting heavy haybales from thin ropes can really mess up your hands more than some people realize. Or falling five feet from the back of a horse is also a bit worse than the mango fall to the ground.

Kona relaxed a little bit at the red head's assurance. She was just glad the girl wasn’t hurt badly.

“I am glad it’s not too bad,” Kona said. “My name is Kona. Please let me know if I can get anything for you to help.” Her embarrassment was fading and was being replaced by gratefulness.

“Thank you both for being so kind.” Kona was not the outgoing type, so she was always joyful when others showed her kindness. The two girls appeared to both be in Ravenclaw, like her, but she definitely didn't recognize them from the dorms. I wonder which dorm they stay in? She set the bowl of mangoes back onto the Ravenclaw table, keeping one in her hand. Kona glanced around The Great Hall, it appears as though all the other students went back to their chattering and eating. Glad that's over. She hated being the center of attention, especially under just negative light. In truth, only the students in their area noticed all the commotion, it wasn't even visible to the other side. Kona sat back down on the bench of the table.

Taking care to cut and cube the mango carefully so she could eat it, she turned back to the other girls. “Do either of you like mangoes?” She said with a nervous chuckle.

[quote][font=times new roman]Vince looked away sheepishly. Of course it wasn't that bad, what was she thinking? River looked tough for her age, and her hands were a bit callous, like she was used to rough work. Vince wondered if River thought she was too nosey, or stuck up, thinking she knew everything. She had just advised her with something simple as some ice, she would've used the same thing if she'd been the other Ravenclaw's place.

Well, now that everything was somewhat put back to normal, Vince felt that she should probably go back to her table and finish eating, or studying, whichever came first. These girls looked like they'd be alright and all of this benevolence was beginning to get overwhelming to Vince, she was use to sticking to her own self, even if that meant pretending to be oblivious to any catcalls or mean words.

“ I..., ” she began, making a gesture back to their table, but then she just turned around and briskly headed back to her seat. She wondered if they'd throw the fruit away, or try to get another student to cast a spell to clean the objects. Either way, it probably wasn't safe to eat any of them, especially with the fact that was practically stepped on.

After sitting down, a three seats available around her, Vince finished her food and continued reading for Potions. She always thought she was fairly good at that class but Professor had given her an A! She felt so embarrassed, she had tried her best but it was said that she hadn't ‘looked over’ her answers before giving in her work. She felt furious, but she knew she'd do better next time. Still, just getting A for Acceptable felt so humiliating.

But Vince, known for her optimism at times, was grateful that she had at least gotten an O in charms! Practicing over night really had paid off! Grinning to herself, she didn't feel so upset while she studied her potion's book.

The girl had just introduced herself as Kona. What a nice name, River had never heard anyone with that name before. And for some reason, River had a thing for rare names.
«Nice to meet you Kona, I’m River»

She really appreciated the concerns, but never liked getting attention for being the clumsy human she’d alwas been.
“Thank you both for being so kind.”
«Oh, no problem, it was only some mangos», River answered, and smiled slightly.
River had experienced a few different scenarios, where help would have been nice, but it was never offered. So she’d help others whenever it didn’t negatively affect her. And in this case, it wasn’t a problem.
“Do either of you like mangoes?”
Kona asked, and chickled nervously. River looked up at her, «Uhm... not really, there’s just something about them that doesn’t work with me», she said, and looked over at the bowl of mangos that had just fallen to the floor.

«I...»
Vince gestured back to her seat, she probably had some things to get done.
«Oh, Yeah, of course. I should probably get some food too», River said, and smiled, as Vince turned headed on her way back to her table.
River turned back to Kona, «So... what are you planning to do with the mangos?», she asked curiously. River had never been too fond of mangos, she found them too slimy, and the texture just didn’t seem right.

River scanned the hall for some available seats, there were very few. Her gaze landed on a few ones, right by where Vince had sat down. Perhaps I could sit there? she thought to herself. «I hope they have black berries today» ,River looked hopefully over to the food on the tables. River really felt like having some fruit or berries today.
